Veteran Hobey Baker
The Hobey Baker Award is given annually to collegiate hockey's Player of the Year. Baker is considered to be the first great American-born hockey player. He was one of the first pilots sent overseas when the United States entered World War I.
A European-combat war hero, Baker tragically lost his life at age 26 in Toal, France, on this date 100 years ago when a plane he was testing after the war crashed due to mechanical problems hours before he was to return to America.
