THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY- DECEMBER 17

1933 NFL Championship

On this date in 1933, the NFL held a championship game that pitted two division winners in a championship meeting to determine the world champions of pro football. The (10-2-1) Chicago Bears hosted the (11-3) New York Giants at Wrigley Field in Chicago in the NFL's inaugural championship game.

The game was witnessed by an estimated 26.000 fans who saw the home team pull one out late with a trick play. With less than two minutes remaining in the game, and the Giants leading 21-16, Bronko Nagurski threw 14 yards downfield to fellow Hall of Famer Bill Hewitt. Hewitt quickly lateraled the ball to Billy Karr who raced into the end zone and gave the bears the lead late.

Final score: Bears 23, Giants 21
