- The Phillies missed out on lefty All-Star Patrick Corbin, who surprisingly signed with the Nationals yesterday. Corbin visited Citizens Bank Park last week. If not the Phillies I thought Corbin would sign with the Yankees, since he grew up a Yankee fan. Washington now has a formidable top 3 starting rotation in Scherzer, Strasberg and Corbin. The Phillies need to look elsewhere for help.
Lefty and ex-Phillie J. A. Happ makes sense. Trading for Giants starter Madison Baumgarner would be great and an upgrade in the rotation. Whatever, with the Corbin move the Phila need to address the starters, as Nola and Arrieta alone won't cut it.
Rumors are that Bryce Harper may return to Washington. Such a move would make the NL East one of the best divisions in baseball. The young Braves won the division this summer, but the under-achieving Nationals may actually be the 2019 favorite.
The Phils now have an opening in their outfield with Rhys Hoskins returning to first base. Harper would look great in the line-up as a lefty-righty combo with Hoskins. Plus it would hurt Washington if the Phillies signed him.
Manny Machado would be a huge upgrade, both on offense and defense. Machado playing third base with his pal, Jean Segura playing shortstop would immediately make the Phillies contenders, not only in National league east, but for the pennant.
The Winter Meetings in Las Vegas start on Sunday. More Phillies' moves await. More work needs to be done, especially with rival New York, Atlanta and now Washington all improving. it's an exciting time, with the Phillies willing to spend money, make deals and wanting to win.
