- Carson Wentz has a cracked vertebrae in his back. The Eagles should shut him down for the season and allow him to rest both his back and knee. Nick Foles will play on Sunday against the Rams. It will be big, not only for the Birds, who need to win to keep their faint playoff hopes alive, but for Foles too. He is about to enter free agency after the season and big money awaits.
With so many teams needing good quarterbacks, Foles should have no problem geting a full-time job. Imagine another magical run, like last year, when Foles took the team all the way to the Super Bowl?
Meanwhile, Wentz should be OK in the long run, but is he injury-prone? Looks like he won't finish the season-again. Should the Eagles re-sign Foles for the future as a back-up to Wentz? Would Foles be satisfied with a permanent back-up position with full-time starting jobs staring him in the face?
It all starts on Sunday night. If Foles can work a miracle, the remaining two games are winnable. Houston at the Linc is a challenge, with the Texans cruising into the AFC playoffs. The Redskins, even in Washington, can be had, especially since they have no QB.
Philly needs to finish with a better record than both Carolina and Minnesota. Both teams defeated the Eagles this year and own the tie-breakers. Running the table and finishing at 9-7 should get Philadelphia in.
- The Phillies return home from the Winter Meetings with Andrew McCutchon . Relievers Andrew Miller and Zach Britton may be on their radar as well, but nothing else will matter unless they get either Bryce Harper or Manny Machado. They are the difference makers. Anything less would be disappointing, especially since the owner bragged about "spending stupid money" in free agency this season.
Unless something unexpected happens, looks like Cesar Hernandez and Jorge Alfaro will return as second baseman and catcher, respectively. Hernandez is a free agent after the 2019 season. Coming off a broken foot, Hernandez is expected to have a better year as he plays in a contract year. Alfaro needs to improve behind the plate with passed balls and calling a game, plus he needs to cut down on his strike-outs offensively.
Just the fact that the Phillies were looking at other catching options ( Miami's J.T. Realmuto) tells the fans that the organization isn't crazy with Alfaro, even though he has huge potential.
- The Chargers dramatically beat the Chiefs at Arrowhead last night, 29-28, converting a two-point play with only 4 seconds remaining. L.A. went for the win instead of the tie, an all-or-nothing play to either win or lose, something the Eagles passed on last week vs Dallas.
Both Kansas City and Los Angeles are tied for the lead in AFC West at 11-3. The Chiefs go to Seattle next week, not easy, then finish at home against the lowly Raiders. The Chargers have the Ravens at home then finish the regular season at Denver. Both teams are in the playoffs. Which one gets the division title, has a bye in the first round and maybe even home field advantage?
