Unbelievable! The Eagles, left for dead only a few weeks before, with a 5% chance of making the playoffs at one point, beat the odds again and made the post-season yesterday, as they shut-out Washington 24-0, along with a Chicago victory over Minnesota. Philly follows the trend of 60% of Super Bowl champs making the playoffs the following season.
The Birds are the No. 6 seed in the NFC, but in many ways, are in a catbird seat, maybe even more so than rival Dallas, who won the NFC East. Why?
The Eagles travel to Soldier Field in Chicago to take on a tough Bears squad, unexpected winner of NFC North. But the bears are young and inexperienced, and, in several instances, parallel last seasons' Los Angeles Rams. Both were young and talented teams, the Rams much more explosive. Both had first-year coaches and second year quarterbacks. Both surprisingly ran through their division.
The Rams lost at home in the first round to a much more experienced Atlanta Falcons team, a team that was in the Super Bowl the year before.
Meanwhile, Dallas plays at home on Saturday night, but must face a hot Seattle Seahawks team and QB Russell Wilson. The Cowboys do not have a first-round pick in next year's draft, having traded the selection to Oakland for wide receiver Amari Cooper. Dallas must play a first-place schedule in 2019 as well, which includes games against the Saints, Bears and Rams.
Philadelphia has a first-round pick ( somewhere in the 20's) and will get an easier second-place schedule ( with games against the Falcons, Vikings and Seahawks).
So, the Eagles have their cake and eat it too. They make the playoffs and get to defend their championship on the field, plus they are set-up better in 2019 than Dallas.
- Kudos to the bears and Head Coach Mike Nagy for playing hard all game against the Vikings. Nagy didn't pull his starters after all, even when the Rams started overwhelming the 49ers. The Bears may regret not laying down vs. Minnesota and playing them for a third time next week in the playoffs. But give the bears credit for winning and for wanting to beat the world champs next Sunday instead of a struggling Minnesota squad.
- Speaking of Minnesota, the losers choked again, especially QB Kirk Cousins, who can't seem to beat good teams, even when he was with the Redskins. Is he a $84 million bust? Instead of keeping Case Keenum, who led the Vikes to the NFC Championship game last season, they signed Cousins instead.
Minnesota, feared for their ferocious defense last season, simply could not get it together this year, even with rookie running back Delvin Cook back from a devastating knee injury. Sad and cold Viking fans must endure yet another long, brutal winter, knowing they are stuck in NFL mediocrity. Maybe that's the payback for defacing our beloved Rocky statue during the playoffs last year.
- The Eagles have been forcing more turnovers lately, and they did so right off the bat in the Redskin game. After getting down, and what little fans they had in their own stadium ( which was literally taken over by green-clad Eagle fans all afternoon), turning against them, Washington crumbled and never really were a challenge.
So, the Birds end up 4-2 in NFC East. Getting swept by Dallas cost the Birds another NFC East crown. Even more than their collapse against Carolina or their lackadaisical play versus Tampa Bay and Tennessee. Luckily they make the playoffs without beating Dallas. The Eagles can only play the Cowboys in the NFC Championship Game. With double-revenge the birds would love to punch their ticket to Super bowl LIII with a big win in Big D.
- So, the debate continues- Nick Foles or Carson Wentz? Foles had another brilliant game on Sunday, at one point completing 25 consecutive passes ( tying the record), going 29-33 overall. Wentz awaits in the wings. He probably can play with the fracture in his back, but won't play as long as Foles is on a roll. Foles, himself, is nursing sore ribs. He was due for more tests this morning to determine the severity of his chest injuries. It did sound, despite the soreness, that Foles intended to play "at least one last time" next week in Chicago.
Win or lose it will be an interesting discussion over the off=season. The Eagles' organization will need to make a decision soon- Foles or Wentz?
- Do you allow Foles to become a free agent, despite all of his heroics, and go with Wentz, who has shown flashes of brilliance but seems to always get hurt? Or do you pick up the costly option on St. Nick- $ 20 million, make him the starter, and decide after the 2019 season what the future holds? Or do you extend Wentz to a long-term deal now, saying farewell to Foles, and putting your faith in Nick?
Foles is 29, Wentz is 25. Foles can play another 10 years, like Tom Brady. Wentz can be the franchise QB for another 10-15 years. Wentz, if traded, could also bring back solid players and numerous first round draft picks. one rumored deal is Wentz to the Giants for super rookie running back Barkley and a first-round pick.
Interesting comparison: Wentz and former Flyers' star Eric Lindros. Great potential, glimpse pf greatness but injury-prone. Both franchise players but short of fulfilling their potential?
I would keep Foles. I love Wentz, and the Eagles went through hell getting him. But Foles is already doing what Wentz hopes to do someday.
Keeping Foles for $20 million in 2019 means that he would have to be the starter. What happens to Wentz' emotional status if he is suddenly told to stand on the sidelines holding a clipboard? If Foles has a bad 2019, do you switch back to Wentz?
Many questions on the horizon but for now it's the playoffs and a chance to write another magical, unpredictable story.
- The return of Darren Sproles has helped to energize the offense. So has the re-emergence of WR Nelson Agholor. If the birds don't sign DeSean Jackson over the off-season, Agholor should be the future speedy receiver on the outside. And how about the steady Alshon Jeffery? The tall wide out goes home to Chicago this weekend for the first time since he left. I'm sure Jeffery is hoping of a big night at Soldier Field. Plus the defense has come up big, especially the defensive line, constantly putting pressure on opposing quarterbacks and giving the patchwork secondary a chance to cover their receivers much better.
The shut-out was the first whitewash of a Redskin team in Washington by an Eagle defense since 1980.
- More bad calls by referees, as with the Agholor touchdown catch that was originally ruled as not a catch. It's a shame because every great play is connected with hints of anxiety- is there a flag on the play? Will the play stand? The woeful officiating leads to a lee enjoyable game.
- Several coaches were fired early this morning around the NFL. There are head coaching vacancies in places like Cincinnati, Cleveland, Miami and Denver. Nice to know the Eagles aren't in that rebuilding process anymore.
- So what does it all mean? The Eagles play on Sunday at 4:40 pm. against the upstart bears. Looks like Foles will play. How will the inexperienced yet talented Chicago team react to the prime-time pressure?
On Saturday, the Colts play in Houston ( the winner takes on Kansas City next weekend) while the Seahawks go to Dallas in the nightcap, the winner facing the Rams next week.
On Sunday it's Baltimore hosting the chargers, the winner playing at New England next week, while the Eagles face the bears later on Sunday evening, the winner traveling to New Orleans next week.
My predictions will come later in the week. Surprisingly, the Eagles are the biggest underdog so far, a 5 1/2 point dog to the Bears. The underdog role is welcome to the Birds, who can relish the role yet another week.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- END OF YEAR REVIEW
My look at the end of the year at all four Philadelphia sports teams- where they were and where they are going..
Eagles-
After a thrilling Super Bowl victory on February 4, there was a fantastic, memorable parade and an off-season full of basking in the glory. For both the fans and players, as well as the entire Eagles organization, it was a dream come true.
The season got off to a rocky start, as QB Carson Wentz wasn't ready for the opener. Nick Foles filled in again, and he split the first two games. Seemed like the Birds were slow, suffering a Super Bowl hangover, maybe suffering form too many book tours, TV appearances and rubber chicken on the banquet circuit.
Injuries played a key note in the season. The Birds went from world champs to struggling to make the playoffs. 69% of Super Bowl winners make the post-season the following year, so Philly would be bucking a trend ( and not in a good way).
All in all, I wouldn't trade this calender year of Eagles football for anything. And if they fail to reach the playoffs this Sunday they will have an easier schedule in 2019 and should pick around 18 in the spring draft.
The Wentz/Foles situation will be interesting to see how it is resolved. My guess is that Foles simply becomes a free agent after the season ends, and he signs with a team that needs a quarterback, such as the Jaguars or Giants.
The Eagles need to start rebuilding their squad, yet leaving the window open for more playoffs appearances. Guys like Jason Peters and Darren Sproles may be done, whereas players like Jordan Hicks may move on. GM Howie Rossman has a boatload of draft picks to play with next spring, so expect lots of activity.
Phillies-
The Phillies spent much of the summer of 2018 in first place. Still, Citizens Bank Park was empty many games. Up until their epic collapse in August the team gave its fans interesting baseball ( if not boring, too analytical ball), led by first-year skipper Gabe Kapler.
Aaron Nola had a great year, nominated for the Cy Young Award. Rhys Hoskins hit over 30 homers. Honestly, that was about it regarding highlights, and it was a wonder the team was at or near first place for much of the summer.
GM Matt Klentak failed to add a significant player at the July trade deadline, as Manny Machado went to the Dodgers and helped them get to another World Series.
So far this off-season the Phillies have improved the team, with the additions of Jean Segura and Andrew McCutchen, but so far are still lacking that big-name guy to put the team over the top, namely a Machado or Harper.
The rest of the NL East has improved, so the Phils may end up in 3rd again unless they make a move by spring training. They haven't done anything significant enough to put more fans in the seats this spring and summer. Mike Trout reminds two years away from potential free agency.
Sixers-
The 76ers lost in the playoffs last spring to their old rival, the Celtics, but little or no help was given the team over the summer to improve the club. They failed to sign big free agents James and Leonard, and they let go of key bench players like Iilysova and Bellinelli. They drafted Markelle Fultz with the first pick in the NBA draft, which now seems like a huge mistake.
GM Brian Colangelo was let go, while Head Coach Brett Brown assumed more responsibilities until the organization finally hired Elton Brand as the new General Manager.
They have started the season as a solid but not great squad. They still pale in comparison to East rivals Boston and Toronto. They will make the playoffs and make win a round or two, but will they win the NBA Championship? Doubtful, even as Joel Embiid is emerging as a superstar.
Flyers-
Last spring the Flyers were thumped in embarrassing fashion by arch-rival Pittsburgh. They kept both GM Hexstall and Coach Hakstol while not gettinga true No. 1 goalie. They continued to promote their prospects painfully slow.
Not long ago Hexstall was fired and Hakstol went after him as the Orange and Black once again try to establish themselves. They finally brought up prized prospect goaltender Carter Hart, who has looked promising in his first few games. They are playing better but will it be good enough to overcome a slow start?
Making the playoffs is a coin toss this year. The veterans like Verachek, Geroiux and Simmons need to step up, while the kids need to mature fast in order for the post-season to be a realistic goal this season.
All in all it was a positive year in Philadelphia sports. Most of all the fans have hope for each franchise and young stars in Wentz, Nola/Hoskins, Embiid and Hart.
Will we see another championship parade in 2019? Probably not. The Eagles are fighting just to make the playoffs and there's no telling what will happen by next fall; The Phillies are very slowly inching to contending-status, and if they do sign Machado or Harper, they suddenly get closer to a title; The Sixers need a bench to seriously contend; and the Flyers still seem light years away from a Stanley Cup.
2019 should be another exciting year in Philly sports.

NFL PREVIEW- WEEK 17
Previewing the key games in Week 17 of the NFL season..
Eagles at Redskins-
We know how big of a game this is for the Eagles. The Bears need to defeat the Vikings in order for Philly to sneak into the playoffs. Although a tough game in Washington, I do think the Eagles win and keep an eye on the scoreboard. Getting ahead of the Skins, when they really have nothing to play for, is key.
Bears at Vikings-
Chicago is the better team. Minnesota needs the game more. Chances are they meet for a third time next week at Soldier Field. I gotta think the Vikes pull this out at home .So, the Birds miss the playoffs after winning a Super Bowl, going out on a bittersweet note.
Colts at Titans-
Sunday Night football for the AFC South crown. Tennessee at home looks like a winner.
***************************************************************************
Tampa Bay wide receiver DeSean Jackson wants out of Florida and has stated he would like to rejoin the Eagles next season. Mike Wallace won't be back, after an injury-filled season. Nelson Agholor should be the deep threat. But I would welcome Jackson back. H eis still fast, a home-run hitter on offense to compliment Ertz, Jeffery and the other possession-type receivers.

Yankee Stadium Tribute
The New York Giants called Yankee Stadium home from 1956 through 1973 and, on December 28, 1959, played in what is widely recognized as "the greatest game ever played." With the NFL championship at stake, a crowd of 64,185 watched the Baltimore Colts tie the game 17-17 with seven seconds left. Eight minutes into professional footballs first-ever "sudden-death" overtime, the Colts' Alan Ameche went in off right tackle from the one-yard line, ending a classic game that would help establish the NFL.

EAGLES-REDSKINS PREVIEW
One would expect the Eagles to thrash the Redskins on Sunday afternoon. Philly needs the victory to have a shot at the playoffs ( along with a Minnesota loss to Chicago). Nick Foles is playing great, on another magical run. Washington, although playing at home are on their third string quarterback, after Alex Smith was injured and Mark Sanchez failed.
After emotional wins over the Rams and Texans, the Birds cannot letdown against the Skins. It would be horrible if they slipped against Washington while the Vikings lost.
So, the Eagles can't worry about what is happening in Minnesota ( the Vikes and Bears also play at 4:25 on Sunday). They need to take care of business in the nation's Capitol, namely limiting turnovers and penalties, getting off to a fast start and controlling the ball. They can't worry about the foles-Wentz debate while the season is still alive. They can't worry about injuries or what 2019 holds They can't even worry about who they might play in the playoffs. They need to focus on the here and now, the division game vs Washington.
To me, getting off to a quick start and making the redskins play from behind is key. I can imagine there will be tons of Eagle fans in D.C. Burying the Skins early may drive the Washington fans away, or better yet, to turn on their own team in frustration and disappointment.
Washington can run the ball with Adrian Peterson leading the way. otherwise they don't score many points. If Foles can lead the offense to another 30-point plus game Philadelphia should win.
Hopefully Chicago does what it says it will do and play their starters. Unless the Rams are up big against San Francisco, the Bears intend to keep the pedal to the medal. Would Chicago rather face the Vikings in the playoffs, even if it would be three times in a season? Losing to Minnesota on Sunday would mean a return match-up next weekend in Chicago. If the bears do beat the Niners( and the Eagles win) the bears play the defending Super Bowl champs at Soldier Field.
I don't think any team wants to face an experienced post-season team like the Eagles, and especially with a hot Foles. The Bears are good but inexperienced, so maybe in the back of their minds they would rather take on the vikings in the first round, which means not giving it all this Sunday in Minnesota.
That's what happens when a club doesn't take care of business early in the season. The Eagles blew winnable games to Carolina, Tampa Bay and Tennessee. Plus they were swept by rival Dallas, which killed their chances of winning the NFC East.
I think the Eagles do their part and win on Sunday., keeping an eye on the scoreboard and hoping for the best.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- EAGLES, PHILLIES, SIXERS
- The Eagles started practicing today for their must-win finale in Washington on Sunday. The Bears must beat the vikings as well. Will the Bears play their starters? For Chicago, they are pretty much stuck in the 3rd seed of the NFC playoffs, unless the Rams lose to the 49ers. Only then can Chicago jump to the 2nd seed and claim a first-round bye.
Bears coach Nagy stated that he will play his starters all through the game, unless the Rams are up at halftime by a significant amount of points". Only then will Nagy res this starters.
So, not only do the Eagles need to win on Sunday, they need San Francisco to play hard in Los Angeles, giving the bears extra motivation to win in Minnesota.
If all falls into place the Birds will sneak into the playoffs as the 6th seed, facing the bears at Soldier Field in the opening round. If not, at least Philly can end the season on a positive note heading into the off-season. They get an easier schedule next year, and probably the No. 17 or 18 pick in the first round in next spring's draft.
All of the key games will be happening at the same time, so late Sunday afternoon into the evening should be interesting and exciting, if not frustrating and nerve-wracking.
- Nothing from the Phillies over Christmas. Manny Machado should be making a decision soon. Will the Phils get a belated Christmas present from Santa or a lump of coal?
Looks like Bryce Harper will be heading west to the Dodgers. If Machado ends up with the Yankees, despite all of their spending money, the Phillies will come up short when it comes to big-name free agents.
So far, it's been a productive post-season, with the additions of Segura and McCuthen, and the departure of Santana and Crawford. More work needs to be done, like a left-handed reliever ( Britton), a lefty starter ( Minor?) and more (Moustakis? Realmuto? ). Franco should be traded; maybe Herrera and Williams as well.
It will be an interesting New Year for the Phillies as we head into spring training in a short six weeks or so.
- The Sixers lost another big game to a top Eastern Conference foe when the Celtics defeated them in overtime on Christmas Day. Once again the bench was non-productive and Coach Brett Brown seems to choke at crunch-time.
Unless the Sixers bolster their bench and ultimately find a new coach they will be good but not great, and won't get out of the East.
Bears coach Nagy stated that he will play his starters all through the game, unless the Rams are up at halftime by a significant amount of points". Only then will Nagy res this starters.

Jack Johnson
On this day in 1908, Jack Johnson became the first African-American to win boxing's world heavyweight championship belt. 30-year-old Johnson defeated 27-year-old Canadian champion Tommy Burns by TKO in the 14th round before a record crowd in Sydney, Australia.

NFL WEEK 16 REVIEW
A review and a look ahead at the NFL following Week 16..
- Titans over Redskins-
Tennessee still has a division and playoff shot as they host Indianapolis next week. Washington plays the Eagles at home with nothing to play for.
Ravens over Chargers-
Baltimore takes over the lead on AFC North. They have Cleveland at home next week to seal a playoff spot. The chargers are still tied with Kansas City for 1st in AFC West. They play at Denver next week while the chiefs host the lowly Raiders. Advantage KC.
Cowboys over Buccaneers-
Dallas wins the NFC East, continuing the streak of no division team winning the East two consecutive years since 2004. Looks like the Cowboys will host the Seahawks in the playoffs.
Vikings over Lions-
Minnesota needs to defeat Chicago at home to make the playoffs and shut-out the Eagles.
Colts over Giants-
Indy came back to beat the Giants, staying in the AFC playoff hunt.
Patriots over Bills-
New England holds serve but needs help to get a bye and home field advantage in the playoffs.
Rams over Cardinals-
As expected the Rams destroyed Arizona. They need to beat San Francisco at home to hang onto a 1st round bye.
Bears over 49ers-
Chicago came back and beat feisty San Francisco. They have the 3rd seed in the NFC playoffs but can move up to No. 2 and a bye if they bear Minnesota and the Rams lose.
Saints over Steelers-
The road to the Super Bowl this year will go through New Orleans while Pittsburgh followed up their victory over New England with a loss to the Saints. The Steelers need to beat the Bengals on Sunday and have the Ravens lose to the Browns.
Seahawks over Chiefs-
Seattle is in the playoffs as a wild card, most likely going to Dallas. KC plays Oakland to wrap up AFC West and home field advantage.
I went 1-1 against the spread this week, going to 20-15 on the year.

EAGLES-TEXANS WRAP-UP
A wrap-up of the incredible Eagles-Texans game yesterday at Lincoln Financial Field..
- Saint Nick Foles delivered again. Especially the final game-winning drive. Foles led the Birds to a field goal, starting at their own 11-yard line. Foles almost suffered a knockout blow from Clowney, who buried his helmet into Nick's chest. For a moment he was flat on his back. Suddenly, like he was resurrected from the dead, Foles arose and ran to the sidelines only for the required play, then came back on the field to a thunderous ovation from 65,000 relieved fans.
Foles threw for a record 471 yards and 4 touchdowns. He stayed calm and cool and led the Eagles to victory. Sunday's incredible win was yet another chapter in the legend of Nick Foles. He already has a statue at the Linc. What more can be done if he takes the Eagles to glory once again?
He has to play next week against Washington. What happens after the season will come later. Will the Eagles find a way to keep both Wentz and Foles? Will Foles walk for really big money and a starting job elsewhere?Would the unthinkable happen and Carson Wentz is the odd man out?
- Lane Johnxon and the entire offensive line played well. Johnson was up against J.J. Watt. For the most part Johnson held the All-Pro pretty much in check. The line gave Foles a chance to throw the ball deep. Vaithi screwed up a few times, his hands full with Clowney. But all in all, the O-line held up for Foles.
- Nelson Agholor proved once again that he can be the speedy receiver the Eagles have needed to take the top off defenses. If the Birds re-sign Golden Tate, why not play Tate in the slot next season, and play Agholor on the outside?
- Zach Ertz broke the record for catches in a season by tight ends, once held by Cowboy Jason Whitten. Ertz has been incredible all year and remains the sure-thing in the offense when a big first down is needed.
- Up to this season, 69% of the time the reigning Super Bowl champion makes the playoffs the following year. Hopefully the Eagles continue this trend. At least getting back into the playoffs would show the doubters that last year was not just a fluke. For that to happen Philly needs to beat the Redskins and need help in Minnesota, needing the bears to beat the host Vikings. Both games have been flexed to 4:25 next Sunday.
- Jackass Michael Strahan picked the Texans to win before the game. He is everywhere on TV. Why? He sucks. The Fox pre-game show, once revered and current, is now out-dated and a bore. Old guys like Bradshaw, Long and Jphnson are no longer trusted or reliable. Strahan, plus losers ;like Rob Riggle ( not as funny Frank Caliendo) just adds to the medocrity.
- Win or not I'm still not happy with defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz and his bend-but-don't -break defense. Again his defense allowed a team to overcome a large deficit in the 4th quarter and took the lead. Foles and Elliot bailed him out.
- Jake Elliot- love to hate him? He always seems to miss an extra point each game. He did again on Sunday. But he may have saved his career with his game-winning kick with three seconds left.Elliot has made a few big kicks for the birds in the last few years, but I would still bring in some competition at training camp next year.
- Who is Boston Scott? He was returning kickoffs late in the game, Unwisely, he took the last kickoff out of the end zone and only brought it back to the 11-yard line where Foles began his now-legendary final drive.
- What a difference Darren Sproles makes! The Eagles really have missed him. He's take speedy change of pace running back they need, able to burst thru a hole or catch a soft pass in the flap, out-running a linebacker. Plus he is ever-dangerous as a punt returner. The return game on both punts and kickoffs needs to be address this off-season.
- Mike Trout was in attendance, as usual, and got the ball after Sproles' TD catch and spring in the first half.Anything to butter him up and convince him even more that he needs to play for the Phillies down the road.
- Penalties were a key part of the game. Too many flags on tickky-tsck plays, yet the refs didn't make calls on pretty obvious plays, including the two-point conversion try when Foles was roughly thrown to the ground by his face-mask.
Something needs to be done with the officials. The game isn't as enjoyable when after every play you gotta look around for penalty flags.
- Why did Doug Pederson go for two points when the score was 13-9 in the first half? He didn't make it, whereas he did convert on several 4th down tries during the game. Isn't the logic that you don't chase points so early in the game? With Elliot missing his extra point attempt, and the failed two point try, it left the Eagles one point short and needing that last-second field goal to win.
- Turnovers again were huge, especially Joss Adams' fumble in the 4th quarter when the Eagles were trying to put the game away.
- Houston's DeAndre Hopkins showed that he is one of the elite wide receivers in the NFL. He is big and has speed and makes incredible, circus catches. Meanwhile the texans' other receiver, Demetrius Thomas, was carted off the field with an Achilles injury.
- So, what does it all mean? It would be a shame if the Eagles don't make the playoffs now that they are playing so well. Philly put themselves in this position, needing another team to win in the Bears. It won't matter unless the Eagles go to Washington and take care of business.
It was a great game yesterday and now the Eagles are 8-7. Losing to average teams like Carolina, Tampa Bay and Tennessee comes back to haunt the Birds. Dallas wins the NFC East with their win, keeping the tradition since 2004 that no team has won back-to-back division titles ( Philadelphia did it that year).
If Arizona surprises the Rams next week the bears still have a shot to grab a playoff bye if they beat the Vikes. Minnesota should win, playing at home and having more incentive to win.
If the year ends next week it's been an interesting, yet disappointing season. The Eagles would pick around No. 18 in the dr4aft next spring. They would get an easier scheduled for 2019. And if the Eagles beat the Skins they would go out on a positive note. Foles sets himself up for a big contract after still not losing in the playoffs the last two seasons.
However if the Eagles go sneak into the playoffs who wants to face the magical Foles and his Eagles? Philly would go in as an experienced, destined team. Yes, as reigning champs the bulls-eye would be on their backs as opposing teams would want to be the ones who finally slay Foles. Plus we wouldn't have a first-round bye or home field advantage. We would probably play the Bears in Chicago, a young team with a great defense but inexperienced.
We will cross that bridge when we come to it. Til then it's enjoying Christmas week with still a chance. Merry Christmas everyone!
I went 1-1 with my NFL picks, reaching 20-15 on the season.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- WEEKLY WRAP-UP
- The Eagles play yet another must-win game today at home vs Houston. I can only imagine the reception QB Nick Foles will get from the frenzied fans when he is introduced. Will he conjure up more magic today, starting at 1:00?
Most local experts are picking the Birds to win ( including yours truly, 23-20 Eagles). All are forgetting that this Texan team is good, 10-4 and possibly in line for a first-round playoff bye. They have weapons on both offense and defense, with DeAndre Hopkins at receiver, and J.J. Watt at defensive tackle.
Philly needs the game more. Plus playing at the Linc will help. Houston is a dome team playing in the chilly afternoon. All adds up to advantage Eagles.
Of course, turnovers and penalties will be key. Kicker Jake Elliot needs to be good, as a tight game is expected. The Birds' defense needs to contain Houston quarterback Watson and not let him run wild. The Eagles always seem to have problems with mobile QBs.
With Washington losing on Saturday ( they fall to 7-8) it's another good sign for Philadelphia. Minnesota must lose either today at Detroit or next week at home against the Bears. Beating the Texans this afternoon is key, as the Eagles play in Washington next week to close out the regular season. Beating the Redskins is certainly do-able.
Baltimore beat the Chargers last night in a key AFC battle. The Ravens are in line to win AFC North now. Pittsburgh can lose today in New Orleans. Baltimore plays at home next week against the Browns. The Steelers finish at home with the Bengals.Meanwhile, Los Angeles hopes that Kansas City loses at Seattle this weekend.
- Carter Hart is human. The Flyers' rookie goaltender won his first two games as a pro this week until he lost, 4-3 to Columbus yesterday afternoon. Still, Hart gives flyers' fans some hope for a bright future.
- In the second half of a doubleheader on Saturday at the Wells Fargo Center the Sixers defeated a depleted Toronto Raptors squad. Kawhi Leonard sat out for "rest." That was an odd decision against a division rival. The 76ers move to 22-12, the NO. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference.
- The Phillies played host to free agent visitor Manny Machado on Thursday. They had a four hour meeting with Machado ( after they finally let him in the door after a brief but awkward delay.Machado is back in Miami to weigh his decision, which hopefully will be announced around the new year.
Meanwhile, with the Dodgers big trade with the Reds, sending outfielders Puig and Kemp to Cincinnati for Homer Bailey and prospects, they are clearing the decks for free agent Bryce Harper. If Machado goes to the Yankees ( his favorite boyhood team) it will be a disappointing blow to Phillies management and the fans. But the Phils can over-spend on Machado, offering him more money and more years ( 10 years as opposed to New York's reported offer of 8 years).
Otherwise, a lefty reliever ( Zach Britton) and another starter ( Mike minor) are needed. If Machado is not signed or won't play third base, Franco should be traded and perhaps Mike Mousakis should be signed for a year. There's more work to do, as the rest of the National League East has improved.

THIS DAY IN SPORTS GISTORY- DECEMBER 22
The Immaculate Reception
On December 23, 1972, in an AFC playoff game between the Steelers and Raiders, Franco Harris hauled in a desperation pass from quarterback Terry Bradshaw after the ball deflected off the body of Raider safety Jack Tatum. Harris galloped 42 yards for the winning touchdown and the most famous reception in NFL history.
Instant replay would help the referees' decision made on the field and the 60 yard touchdown would count.
Final score: Steelers 13, Raiders 7.

NFL PREVIEW-WEEK 16
Only two more weeks in the NFL regular season before the playoffs begin. Here are the key games..
Redskins at Titans-
Tennessee should win at home as they try to hang with Houston. Washington, at 7-7 still has wild card hopes.
Ravens at Chargers-
Los Angeles needs to win to stay tied with Kansas City, while Baltimore still has division and wild cards hopes. I like the Chargers at home.
Buccaneers at Cowboys-
Will Dallas choke? They need this game or else they will need to beat the Giants on the road next week.
Vikings at Lions-
Eagle fans hope the Lions play spoilers against their hated rival in Detroit. Minnesota, with a win, would need to also defeat the Bears next week at home to assure a playoff spot.
Giants at Colts-
Indianapolis has faint playoff hopes. Indy has come on this season and need this game badly against an inconsistent Giant team.
Bills at Patriots-
Except New England, losers of their last two games ( rare in December) to take it out at home on Buffalo. I like the Pats - 13 points.
Bears at 49ers-
Chicago needs to keep winning to get a bye in the upcoming NFC playoffs.
Steelers at Saints-
Pittsburgh, after finally defeating new England last week, can't suffer a let-down in new Orleans. The Saints need to stay with the Rams for the overall top seed in the NFC.
Chiefs at Seahawks-
Surprising loss by Seattle to the 49ers last week. Eagle fans root for Andy Reid and his Chiefs this week in Seattle. If Philly sneaks into the playoffs and can jump Seattle for the no. 5 seed, they would probably play Dallas in the post-season rather than Los Angeles or Chicago.
I went 2-0 against the spread last week in the NFL. I move to 19-12 for the season. This week I'm taking..
Patriots - 13
Seahawks - 2 1/2
Redskins at Titans-

Veteran Hobey Baker
The Hobey Baker Award is given annually to collegiate hockey's Player of the Year. Baker is considered to be the first great American-born hockey player. He was one of the first pilots sent overseas when the United States entered World War I.
A European-combat war hero, Baker tragically lost his life at age 26 in Toal, France, on this date 100 years ago when a plane he was testing after the war crashed due to mechanical problems hours before he was to return to America.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, EAGLES, FLYERS
- Manny Machado visited the Phillies yesterday for four hours. Meetings, tour of Citizens Bank Park, lunch, then dinner later at an undisclosed restaurant ( Pat's Steaks?).
The four hour meeting was much longer than the 90 minute session with the Yankees on Wednesday. Rumor has it that New York may go eight years for Machado, who has stated that he always wanted to be a Yank, but that the Phillies are prepared to offer Machado a ten-year contract and blow others away money-wise.
So, will Manny go with his heart or with the money?
Manny enjoyed the Baltimore connections of Phillies management, since bot Andy MacPhail and Matt Klentak both worked for the Orioles.
I would still like to have Bryce Harper, who would give the line-up a much-needed power bat, but I'll take Machado because he is a major upgrade on both offense and defense. If Machado signs with Philadelphia will he play third base?
Not getting one of the two big superstars would be disappointing after owner John Middleton spoke of "spending stupid money" this off-season. I like what they have done so far with McCutchen and Segura. Getting a quality catcher like Realmuto, and bullpen help such as Britotn ( Andrew Miller is reportedly close to signing with St. Louis), and maybe a lefty starter ( the Phils and Mets are interested in Texas pitcher Mike Minor) is big, but without a Machado and/or Harper to get them over the hump in NL East, anything less is a huge let-down.
Reports are that Machado, who returned home to Miami to make a decision, will make up his mind around New Year's.
Was the construction worker who approached Machado yesterday an actor hired by the Phillies to recapture Jim Thome being greeted by blue-collar workers at Citizens Bank Park while he was being wooed in free agency? After listening to him on the WIP Morning Show this morning he sounds like a "real fan." But it seemed to coincidental and staged.
*****************************************************************
- Phil Martelli brought up an interesting point also on the Morning Show- if Foles again takes the Eagles to the playoffs, would you think about trading Carson Wentz straight-up to the Giants for Saquon Barkley?
I wouldn't as I think it's much tougher to find a quality quarterback than a terrific running back, but it is interesting to ponder. The Eagles would sign the 29-year-old Foles to a long-term deal. Plus how often do the Birds and Giants make trades, let alone a huge one like that?
The Eagles are favored by 2 1/2 points on Sunday. The weather is supported to be cold but clear. I can only imagine the fans going nuts in the 1:00 game, the sound deafening as Nick Foles is introduced. The defense must get after Houston QB Watson, containing him if he leaves the pocket. On offense they must limit turnovers and neutralize J.J. Watt, while Foles carves up the Texan defense, again controlling the ball and spreading his passes around.
I still say Eagles 23 Texans 20

20-year-old rookie Carter Hart went 2-0 last night against Nashville. He gives the Flyers hope, a young goaltender for the next 10-15 years.

EAGLES- TEXANS PREVIEW
Every game now is a must-win for the Eagles. They come home this Sunday for a 1:00 game vs the hot Houston Texans. The Texans are 0-4 all-time vs Philadelphia. The Eagles need to win to stay alive for a wild card spot. Houston is jockeying for playoff position.
Houston is 10-4. They don't need the game as badly as the Birds. The Texans don't play as well outdoors in the cold.
Nick Foles will start at QB for Philly. Imagine the reception he will get on Sunday from the fans! Even if they make the playoffs chances are Sunday's game will be the last home game Foles will play at the Linc.
Again the key will be limiting turnover and penalties; keeping J.J. Watt at bay; and stopping the Texans' wide receivers.
Injured Eagles Jerrnigan and Hicks may be back. Carson Wentz will sit out again, with Nate Sudfeld assuming back-up quarterback duties behind Foles.
The Birds always seem to have problems with mobile quarterbacks. Houston's Watson is fleet and mobile and could give the Birds' defense problems out of the pocket.
Even if the Eagles win they have to hope for a Minnesota loss this week against Detroit or next week vs Chicago. Still, winning this game comes first. A long shot is for the division, but that would take the Eagles winning out and the Cowboys losing their final two games.
In a close game, I like the Eagles to survive one more week, winning 23-20.
It's nice to have a meaningful game in Week 16. remembering last year, when the Birds had clinched NFC East and were trying to hold down the No. 1 seed, and also recalling how this season seemed lost, it's nice to look forward to Sunday, still having a shot at the post-season.
Can St. Nick deliver another Christmas miracle?

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- EAGLES, FLYERS, SIXERS
Thinking about the Eagles' big win over the Rams, and what lies ahead...
- Nick Foles threw the ball downfield more than Carson Wentz last Sunday. He also spread the ball around more, including to Alshon Jefferies, who caught eight passes. Was this a coaching decision? Did the Rams play eight men in the box and dare Foles to throw long? Or did Wentz have those same downfield plays and just didn't attempt them?
The offense also ran the ball more, which opened up the long ball. Running the ball with Adams, Smallwood and Sproles kept the L.A. defense honest. Running the ball controlled the clock and kept the powerful Rams offense off the field.
- Notice that Foles wasn't sacked? Aaron Donald may be a MVP candidate but he was kept a tbay by the Eagles' offensive line. Foles also made quick decisions and got rid of the ball in a hurry. Wentz has a tendency to hold onto the ball too long. Sacks happen when that happens.
- The Eagles are 4-0 all-time vs the Texans. Last time they played, in 2014, Foles was also the quarterback. He broke a rib that day, didn't play again for Philadelphia that season, and was later traded to St. Louis.
- If he plays, wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins will be someone to keep an eye on. The Houston receiver is one of the best. Whatever the Birds did on Sunday to stop the Rams' deep passing game they will need to do this week against the Texans. Keeping J.J. Watt away from Foles will also help.
- Of course, the Vikings need to lose one of their last two games for the Phillies to get into the playoffs. But keep your eye on Seattle. If Philly finishes ahead of the Seahawks and grab the No. 5 seed, they would likely play the Cowboys instead of the Rams or Bears. The Birds know Dallas better, plus it's really hard to beat a team three times in a season, the task the Cowboys would have.
*******************************************************************
The Flyers won last night, 3-2, over the Red Wings. It was rookie goalie Carter Hart's first game, and he stopped 20 of 22 Detroit shots. He gives the fans hope and a look at the future.

Andrew McCutchen was introduced by the Phillies yesterday. He is a solid, professional guy, still good on offense and flexible on defense.
I like what the Phils have done this off-season so far, but honestly, I would be disappointed if the organization doesn't get Machado or Harper. To me, Philadelphia is still behind in NL East. Getting lefties Andrew Miller and/or Zach Britton will help but a game-changer would be a Machado or Harper in the line-up.

NFL WRAP-UP WEEK 15
Review of the weekend that was in pro football..
Chargers over Chiefs-
Big comeback win at Arrowhead for Los Angeles, who should cruise into the playoffs red-hot. The Chargers have Baltimore at home and Denver on the road to close the season, while Kansas City goes to Seattle and plays host to Oakland. Advantage Chiefs.
Texans over Jets-
Houston plays in Philadelphia this Sunday. They try to get a first-round bye in the post-season.
Browns over Broncos-
Hard to believe how improved Cleveland is. Lots of hope for the future.
Falcons over Cardinals-
Too little too late for the disappointing Falcons.
Bills- Lions-
Detroit had a slim playoff chance before this loss. The Eagles hope they play well at home this week against Minnesota.
Bears over Packers-
Bears clinched NFC North, going form last to first, snapping a long losing streak to Green Bay at Soldier Field. The Pack suffer a disappointing season and should finish below .500.
Bengals over Raiders-
Despite the win Cincinnati coach Marvin Lewis deserves to get fired.
Colts over Cowboys-
Dallas gets shut-out for first time since 2002. They need to beat either Tampa Bay at home or the giants on the road to clinch NFC East. Meanwhile Indy hosts the Giants this week and plays at Tennessee for the division to end the season.
Vikings over Dolphins-
Miami, after a miracle win over new England a week ago, blow it by getting routed by Minnesota. The Vikes play at Detroit, hanging on by a half-game to the final wild card spot.
Titans over Giants-
Giants officially eliminated while Tennessee stays alive in playoff hunt.
Redskins over Jaguars-
Washington moves to 7-7, tied with the Eagles in NFC East. They play at Tennessee this week before hosting the Eagles.
Ravens over Buccaneers-
Baltimore stays alive for the playoffs, facing a tough task by playing the Chargers in L.A. this weekend.
49ers over Seahawks-
A surprise. Seattle still in good shape for a wild card but this loss makes it tougher. Seattle welcomes the Chiefs this weekend.
Steelersover Patriots-
Pittsburgh finally gets its revenge while New England may not get a playoff bye for the first time since 2009. When they don't get a bye ( and home field advantage) they don't go to the Super Bowl. The Steelers play at New Orleans before hosting Cincinnati, while New England finishes at home vs the Bills and Jets.
Saints over Panthers-
Carolina loses it's 5th game in a row, while New Orleans tries to grab the 1 seed in the NFC playoffs.
I won both of my NFL games this week, with the Steelers (plus 2) and Panthers ( plus 6). Against the spread I'm 19-12 for the season.

NFL Playoff 1932
On this date in 1932, the Chicago Bears defeated the visiting Portsmouth (Ohio) Spartans, 9-0, to decide the NFL's regular season champion. The game was played one year before the first league championship game. It was contested on an 80-yard dirt field inside Chicago Stadium because Wrigley Field was filled with snow. Bronko Nagurski threw a 1-yard pass to Red Grange for the lone touchdown.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- EAGLES, PHILLIES, FLYERS, SIXERS
- With the Eagles upset victory over the rams on Sunday night, the debate rages- Foles or Wentz? For this week it will be Foles.
I agree. Play the hot hand. Let Foles play out the season. It's unlikely but not impossible that St. Nick takes Philly back to the post-season and beyond. He did it once when no one thought he could. The team is obviously behind him. Winning is the bottom line.
In the long run it's Wentz. The Eagles will have to decide when or if they give Wentz the long-term contract. Before they surrender big money the organization needs to know that Wentz is healthy.
Even though Foles took the Birds to the Super Bowl and won it, and now he is on the cusp of the playoffs again, you can't count on Foles being the answer long-term, winning or not. Foles is 29, Wentz is 25. Wentz is more talented while Foles is more accurate. The Eagles coaching staff tailor the offense to Foles' skills. I doubt it would happen that the Eagles sign Foles to a contract as a back-up. First, the salary cap won't allow it. Second, with Foles ready to enter free agency and a starting job waiting ( Foles shining again only enhances his worth to other teams.
Some guys are good at certain roles. As a starter Foles may not be as good. Maybe he is cut out to be an emergency, relief pitcher-type.
So why won't the Eagles place Wentz on the IR list ? They could make life easier on themselves by doing so. But I think they want other teams to guess who is the starting quarterback from week-to-week. Plus if Foles should get hurt they would want a Wentz to go in rather than a Nate Sudfeld.
The debate will continue as long as the Eagles keep winning with Foles. That's a good thing. It's up to the Philly organization to sort out the details.
By the way the Eagles got more help last night when Carolina lost, dropping their record to 6-8. The Eagles must win their final two games and hope the Vikings lose to either the Lions or Bears in the last two weeks of the regular season.
**************************************************************************
- Manny Machado visits the Phillies on Thursday. That's if he doesn't get a contract from the Yankees on Wednesday when he visits them. Would the Phils allow him to leave town empty-handed?
Andy MacPhail is setting the tone fore fans that "it would still be a successful off-season even if we don't get a big name free agent." Wrong! I like what the Phillies have done so far but there is more work to do. Despite the improvement the team is still behind the also improved braves, Nationals and Mets in National League East.
After the organization ( John Middleton) proclaimed they will "spend stupid money"seems like GM Klentak and MacPhail are pumping the brakes, kicking the can down the road again, looking to future free agency.
Segura, McCutchen, and perhaps Miller and Britton would make the Phillies better, Add the subtraction of Herrera, Franco and maybe Williams. Better, but playoff contender?
Think about it: the team was in first place for a while during the summer, yet fans refused to go to Citizen's Bank Park. Why? Boring baseball and no superstar. The organization doesn't get it. Give Machado or preferably Harper the money.
Machado does scare me a little, admitting he doesn't always hustle. Plus he demands that he plays shortstop and not third base, his more natural and Gold Glove position.Harper would give the Phils left-handed power and a feisty attitude. Machado fills a position of need, both on offense and defense.
Without Machado or Harper i would consider the off-season a disappointment.
********************************************************************
The Flyers finally fired coach Dave Hakstol. About time. The team looked dead in the water on their recent road trip. Firing the coach- and finally promoting prized-prospect goalie Carter Hart will give the long-suffering fans some hope that better times are ahead.
******************************************************************
The Sixers looked lackluster in their loss at San Antonio last evening. The team isn't going anywhere without more bench depth and outside shooting. Getting a new coach after the season wouldn't hurt either. Meanwhile I get one game closer to winning my wager of the 76ers not winning over 53 1/2 games this regular season.

THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY- DECEMBER 17
1933 NFL Championship
On this date in 1933, the NFL held a championship game that pitted two division winners in a championship meeting to determine the world champions of pro football. The (10-2-1) Chicago Bears hosted the (11-3) New York Giants at Wrigley Field in Chicago in the NFL's inaugural championship game.
The game was witnessed by an estimated 26.000 fans who saw the home team pull one out late with a trick play. With less than two minutes remaining in the game, and the Giants leading 21-16, Bronko Nagurski threw 14 yards downfield to fellow Hall of Famer Bill Hewitt. Hewitt quickly lateraled the ball to Billy Karr who raced into the end zone and gave the bears the lead late.
Final score: Bears 23, Giants 21

EAGLES-RAMS WRAP-UP
A review of the Eagles' magical upset of the Rams..
- Nick Foles is already a legend in Philadelphia. He is cementing his icon status by doing it again, staying cool, confident and leading the Eagles to improbable victories. I think he should play the season out, even if Wentz is healthy enough to play. Taking Foles out, and Wentz failing would cause fans to ask "what if?"
After the season Eagles management will need to make a decision- let Foles go or keep him? Sign Wentz to a long-term contract?
-The Texans have a few key players injured and may not play next Sunday against the Birds at the Linc. Plus Houston isn't used to cold weather ( would be nice to have a little snow..). Finally, the birds need the game more.
- Rookie cornerback Maddox solidified the secondary. defense Coordinator Schwartz blitzed more, to great success. Ram QB Goff had happy feet and, when pressured, missed easy throws. The offensive line gave up zero sacks. Head Coach Pederson spread the ball around and had a good night play-calling. All in all, a great team win.
- Jake Elliot again missed a key field goal, but that attempt probably never should've been tried. Why not punt the ball on 4th down and a little more than a minute left in the game? L.A. had no time-outs and needed to drive the length of the field to score a touchdown to tie. Instead, Elliot missed a 53-yard try and the Rams got the ball near mid-field.
- The Ram loss gives New Orleans even more incentive to get the 1st seed and home field advantage in the post-season. The Saints play Carolina tonight and again in two weeks. The Panthers need to lose to boost the Eagles' playoff chances.
- Running the ball helped to open up the Eagle offense. So did spreading the ball around. Always nice to know Zach Ertz is there if needed, but seems like Wentz depended on Ertz too much with his check-down short passes.
- Tons of Philly fans in Los Angeles last night.Even when they are down Eagle fans travel well.
- Nice seeing the Cowboys lose and get shut-out at Indianapolis. Can they choke? Dallas has Tampa Bay at home on Sunday and then go to New York to close out the regular season. Again, if only the Birds could've split with Dallas the NFC East would look very different this morning.
- So what does it all mean? The Rams should still win 13 games by beating the 49ers and Cardinals to close the season. Philly needs to beat the Texans and redskins to have a shot. Carolina should lose at least one game to the Saints. Minnesota goes to Detroit then hosts the NFC North champion Bears. Chicago may still need that Viking game for seeding purposes.
Most of all the Eagles showed pride and, if they go down, will go down swinging and defending their Super Bowl title, not just meekly handing over the crown in defeat.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- EAGLES, PHILLIES NFL FOOTBALL
- Carson Wentz has a cracked vertebrae in his back. The Eagles should shut him down for the season and allow him to rest both his back and knee. Nick Foles will play on Sunday against the Rams. It will be big, not only for the Birds, who need to win to keep their faint playoff hopes alive, but for Foles too. He is about to enter free agency after the season and big money awaits.
With so many teams needing good quarterbacks, Foles should have no problem geting a full-time job. Imagine another magical run, like last year, when Foles took the team all the way to the Super Bowl?
Meanwhile, Wentz should be OK in the long run, but is he injury-prone? Looks like he won't finish the season-again. Should the Eagles re-sign Foles for the future as a back-up to Wentz? Would Foles be satisfied with a permanent back-up position with full-time starting jobs staring him in the face?
It all starts on Sunday night. If Foles can work a miracle, the remaining two games are winnable. Houston at the Linc is a challenge, with the Texans cruising into the AFC playoffs. The Redskins, even in Washington, can be had, especially since they have no QB.
Philly needs to finish with a better record than both Carolina and Minnesota. Both teams defeated the Eagles this year and own the tie-breakers. Running the table and finishing at 9-7 should get Philadelphia in.
- The Phillies return home from the Winter Meetings with Andrew McCutchon . Relievers Andrew Miller and Zach Britton may be on their radar as well, but nothing else will matter unless they get either Bryce Harper or Manny Machado. They are the difference makers. Anything less would be disappointing, especially since the owner bragged about "spending stupid money" in free agency this season.
Unless something unexpected happens, looks like Cesar Hernandez and Jorge Alfaro will return as second baseman and catcher, respectively. Hernandez is a free agent after the 2019 season. Coming off a broken foot, Hernandez is expected to have a better year as he plays in a contract year. Alfaro needs to improve behind the plate with passed balls and calling a game, plus he needs to cut down on his strike-outs offensively.
Just the fact that the Phillies were looking at other catching options ( Miami's J.T. Realmuto) tells the fans that the organization isn't crazy with Alfaro, even though he has huge potential.
- The Chargers dramatically beat the Chiefs at Arrowhead last night, 29-28, converting a two-point play with only 4 seconds remaining. L.A. went for the win instead of the tie, an all-or-nothing play to either win or lose, something the Eagles passed on last week vs Dallas.
Both Kansas City and Los Angeles are tied for the lead in AFC West at 11-3. The Chiefs go to Seattle next week, not easy, then finish at home against the lowly Raiders. The Chargers have the Ravens at home then finish the regular season at Denver. Both teams are in the playoffs. Which one gets the division title, has a bye in the first round and maybe even home field advantage?

NFL PREVIEW- WEEK 15
A look at Week 15 of the NFL season..
- Chargers at Chiefs-
Tonight's game is a battle for 1st place in AFC West. Chiefs are tough at Arrowhead but don't overlooked L.A., who won on the road at Pittsburgh two weeks ago.
Texans at Jets-
Meaningful game for Houston; meaningless game for New York.
Browns at Broncos-
Browns won five games so far this season. Can they win out and finish 8-8?
lay
Cardinals at Falcons-
Atlanta is one of the biggest disappointments of the year.
Lions at Bills-
Who cares? Lions played in Arizona last week, and won. They fly across the country and play in chilly Buffalo this weekend.
Packers at Bears-
Big division game for Chicago as Green Bay plays out string.
Raiders at Bengals-
Oakland surprised the Steelers last week.
Cowboys at Colts-
Eagle fans rooting for Coach Frank Reich and Indy.
Dolphins at Vikings-
After miracle win over New England last week Miami invades Minnesota, who need to win to stay in playoff chase.
Titans at Giants-
Can Giants win their last 3 games and finish 8-8? Only loss to Eagles has prevented New York form thinking wild card.
Redskins at Jaguars-
No QB for Washington, despite playing bad Jacksonville squad.
Buccaneers at Ravens-
Baltimore has hopes of catching Steelers or sneaking into wild card.
Seahawks at 49ers-
Seattle tries to keep momentum going toward wild card berth.
Patriots at Steelers-
Big game for seeding in playoffs. Pittsburgh has revenge on it's mind from last season
Saints at Panthers-
Must-win for declining Carolina.First match-up within three weeks.
Eagles at Rams-
Philly coming off emotional loss in Dallas, without QB Wentz, must cross country to face angry L.A. team.
I went 1-1 against the spread last week in the NFL. I'm 17-12 for the season. Here are my two picks for this week-
- Panthers plus 6
- Steelers plus 2

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- EAGLES, PHILLIES, FLYERS, SIXERS
- Suddenly Carson Wentz has a back injury that will keep him out of Sunday night's game with the Rams in Los Angeles. Nick Foles will start. Wentz may be sidelined for the rest of the year. I'm sure the outcome of Sunday's crucial game will help to determine if Wentz could or should return for two meaningless football games.
Head coach Doug Pederson says the injury was not game-related. So how and when did it happen? Which leads to more questions: is Wentz injury-prone? Will he get a new contract when the time comes? Will the Eagles re-sign Nick Foles as insurance? Are the Eagles tanking/ Was Wentz benched, giving Foles a chance to work similar magic to last years' championship season? If Foles wins the last three regular season games and takes the Birds to the playoffs will there be a quarterback controversy?
I think Wentz does have a bad back- he was on the injury list in October with back issues-and now the Eagles don't want to risk their franchise QB for further injury since the season is just about done anyway. Let Wemtz rest his back and knee and come back next year, while hoping Foles can work his magic again.
The Rams game is probably out of reach. Coming off such an emotional loss in Dallas, then having to fly across the country and face an angry Rams team in L.A. ( the Rams lost on Sunday night in Chicago), is not good for Philly. The opening line was Rams favored by 9 points. That went up to 11 points once Wentz went down and Foles became the starter.
Foles will handle the offense well, especially the read-option. He now has Golden Tate as another short-yardage weapon who can be utilized in the slot. But can Foles put up enough points to stay with L.A.? Can the weary defense, on the field way too long against the Cowboys, slow down the vaunted Rams attack?
The Eagles need to run the ball and control the ball in order to keep the Ram offense off the field. Los Angeles hasn't played well in about a month. Is that because they ran away with the NFC West and are coasting towards the playoffs, maybe not as motivated? Or are the Rams in a funk? Certainly they need to keep playing hard to secure home field advantage over New Orleans in the post-season.
Plus L.A. has revenge on their minds, as Minnesota extracted revenge earlier in the season, for last season's loss out west. Whereas the Eagles are more to lose here. A loss knocks them out of whatever slim hopes they have to sneak into the playoffs. Win and the Birds come back to Philadelphia next week against Houston with hope alive.
I think the rams stomp on the Eagles similar to what the Saints did back in November. Rams 38 Eagles 17
- Bob Brookover, local writer has a column in the paper this morning, saying the Phillies may get shut-out altogether in the Harper/Machado sweepstakes, with Harper going to the glitzy Dodgers ( Magic Johnson screws us again) and Machado signing with his favorite boyhood team, the Yankees. The Phils may have a ton of "stupid" money to toss around, but if guys really don't want to play in Philly...
So far the Phillies off-season activity has been wonderful. Getting Jean Segura to play shortstop and now signing Andrew McCutchen for the outfield has upgraded the team, both on offense and defense. But losing out on Haprer and Machado, when the Phillies have the money and promised to be aggressive in getting at least one of them, would be hugely disappointing.
The Phils can still do a lot. Getting both lefties, Andrew Miller and Zach Britton for the bullpen would be big. Getting another starter, since it looks like Jay Happ will join the Yankees, would be a plus as well. Adding by subtracting a Herrera, Franco or Williams would help. Curious that in the Phillies 2019 calendar, neither Herrera, Franco, Williams or Hernandez are featured ( although Phillies' management have indicated they are keeping Cesar, thinking he will rebound off a broken foot in a free agent year).
But..in all honesty..if Harper and/or Machado go elsewhere, I will think that GM Matt Klentak once again failed to get the really big prize, and he had to settled for sloppy seconds, like usual.
- Loserville. Again last night. The Flyers blew a two-goal lead with a little over a minute to go in regulation time, as they lost to Calgary on overtime, 6-5. I'm glad the new general manger is on this road trip. Maybe he will finally get rid of the coach and start to rebuild this inconsistent, frustrating hockey team.
Same with the Sixers. They lose only their second home game of the year to lowly New Jersey ( their other home loss came to awful Cleveland). Even with Jimmy Butler out the 76'ers need to take care of business at home against an inferior club.
It does help me, however, as I bet on the Sixers not winning 54 games or more this season.

'The youngest member of my family, Joseph, is very ill, he has leukemia. If I can dedicate this trophy to him tonight and give him a couple of days of happiness, this is worth everything. I think a lot of people think that I go through a lot on Saturdays and during the week as most athletes do, and you get your bumps and bruises and it is a terrific battle out there on the field. Only for me it is only on Saturdays and it is only in the fall. For Joseph it is all year round and it is a battle that is unending with him and he puts up with much more than I'll ever put up with and I think that this trophy is more his, than mine because he has been a great inspiration to me."

IN THE NEWS- MICROSOFT SPOTLIGHTS ADAPTIVE DEVICE IN HOLIDAY TV COMMERCIAL
Microsoft is touting one of its latest adaptive offerings with a national television advertisement featuring a boy with a disability and his friends.
The one-minute spot dubbed "Reindeer Games' shows kids running through a snow-filled neighborhood racing to see their friend Owen, 9, defeat a video game using Microsoft's Xbox Adaptive Controller.
Owen has Escobar Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that leaves him with some physical challenges that make using a typical game controller difficult, according to his family.
Microsoft introduced the Xbox Adaptive Controller earlier this year. The $99.99 device is designed to enable gamers with disabilities to play with whatever abilities they have through their hands, feet, mouth, head or otherwise.
"What I like about the adaptive controller is no matter how your body is or how fast you are, you can play,' Owen said.
Microsoft indicated that it worked with its internal accessibility team and an Americans with Disabilities Act expert to ensure an authentic portrayal in the commercial featuring Owen and his real-life best friend Gunnar.
The advertisement will air on broadcast TV until Christmas Day, Microsoft said.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, BIG 5 BASKETBALL
- The Phillies made the first big splash of the baseball Winter Meetings by signing Andrew McCutchen to a 3-year, $50 million deal. McCuthen, the 2-13 National League MVP and five-time All-Star, spent nine years with the Pirates where he achieved superstar status. He played last season for the Giants and Yankees.
McCutchen, 32, isn't what he used to be. He doesn't run as fast and he won't hit .320 again ( he hot .255 in 2018). But he is still a smart, solid player. Offensively, he can hit between 20-25 home runs, doesn't strike out much, walked 95 times last season, and is a famed gap hitter. Defensively, he may not be able to play center field any longer but he plays a solid corner outfield spot.
Add to the fact that McCutchen is a veteran leader in the clubhouse.
I don't mind the $50 for a player maybe over his prime. It's not my money and the Phillies have tons of it. Sometimes you do have to overpay a little to get a quality player. He is an upgrade and makes the team better.
McCutchen has hit lead-off in the past, but will probably bat fifth or sixth in the Phillies line-up. He is a professional hitter, something the Phillies have needed for a long time.
Meanwhile, the club was in serious trade talks with Miami for catcher J.T. Realmuto, but have hit a snag. Despite rumored offers of prized-pitching prospect Sixto Sanchez, who was once deemed an untouchable, plus a young outfield ( Nick Williams?) The Marlins turned down the offer and will continue to try and deal the young catcher, even after Opening Day.
I do think the Phils need to upgrade their catching situation. I like Jorge Alfaro, but he strikes out way too much and one can't ignore the many passed balls last season. He does have tremendous raw power and possess a rocket arm behind the plate.
The team is getting closer to signing veteran hurler J. A. Happ to a contract. Happ is a lefty the rotation sorely needs, and, even at age 35, is a solid performer. The Phils need a left-hander in the rotation to combat division lefty stars Soto, Freeman, and maybe Harper again.
Lefty bullpen help may be on the way as well, as the Phillies are very interested in Zach Britton.
Sine McCutchen signed, is the door to Machado and/or Harper closing? No, most experts agree. There is still an open outfield slot in the line-up, especially if Williams or Odubel Herrerra are dealt. Third base remains wide open as well, just waiting for Machado to fill with his Gold Glove. I think Machado fills more of a need but Harper is the glitzier signing, selling more tickets and hitting more home runs.
As long as the Phils get one of them Ill be happy. I would rather have Harper, especially since Machado publicly remarked that he isn't always an all-out hustler.
Late note: It appears as though Happ will sing with the Yanks. That's OK> Does that start the Phillies being more aggressive in trade talks involving a Madison Bumgarner or Robbie Ray?
- As I predicted, Villanova finally lost a City series game, losing to Penn last night at the Palestra. The Cats had won an amazing 25 straight Big Five games in a row, a record perhaps never to be broken. Penn had not defeated Villanova since 2002. In a so-called "down" year, the Wildcats fall to 8-3 while the Quakers are 9-2. If Villanova was the No. 17 team in the country before the loss, where does that put Penn?
With the re-emergence of Penn, could Philly see as many as 3 or 4 of its college basketball teams in the March Madness tournament next spring?

NFL Tuesday Trivia
Name the first player in NFL history to top 1,000 yards in both rushing and receiving in the same season.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- EAGLES, PHILLIES
- Hard to believe the Eagles are still alive for the playoffs. They are on life-support, but faint hope still lingers. With Minnesota's loss to Seattle last night, the Vikings drop to 6-6-1. Carolina is 6-7, like Philly. Problem is tie-breakers. Since the birds lost to both the Vikings and Panthers, they both own tie-breakers. The Seahawks look like they win win the first wild card spot. The Eagles are contending for the last spot, but they need to win their final three games. With the Rams, Texans and Redskins remaining, it's an even more daunting long shot.
In reality the Eagles are cooked. Plus they don't deserve the post-season. They failed to beat Dallas at home on Sunday Night Football. They choked against Carolina, coughing up a 17-point fourth quarter lead at the Linc. They lost to now mediocre teams in Tampa Bay, Minnesota and Tennessee.
Philadelphia isn't the same team that won the Super Bowl last season. Different players, different coaches, less motivation. Harder schedule, the bulls-eye on their backs. Too many celebrations and books written and guest appearances on TV shows. But the bottom line is that the Eagles simply weren't good enough this season.
I actually hope they don't make the playoffs. They will only get knocked out as they would play all of their post-season game son the road. Lose and they get a higher draft pick ( probably around No 14-16 in the first round), an easier schedule in 2019, and hopefully more incentive to find the hunger which made the team great last year.
Doug Pederson isn't the same coach this year. In 2018 he would've gone for the two-point conversion at the end of the Cowboy game. The Birds are 5-for-5 in two-pointer conversions this season. They were at the Dallas one-yard line after a cowboy penalty. Pederson knew he had a tired defense. Yet he elected to play it safe and kick the extra point to tie the game.
At the time I agreed with that decision. Hindsight is always 20/20. If the Eagles failed to convert Dallas could've ran out the clock since Philly only had one timeout left. But why think negative? If you do convert Dallas could still win the game with a field goal. But converting the two-point play not only gives you the lead, it assures that you won't go into overtime with a tired defense.
The more I think of it, the more I feel that Pederson should've tried to win the game right there.
Either way, you've got a defense that has spent an incredible time on the field. Dallas had twice the amount of possession time. They dominated, with the help of a few terrible calls by the refs, yet the Eagles had the opportunity to go ahead for the first time. Would the Cowboys choke once behind? We never got that chance to find out.
Pederson wrote a book during the off-season called Fearless. Maybe now it would be titled Bogus?
- The Phillies are in Las Vegas at the Winter meetings. Rumors persist they are still more interested in Manny Machado rather than Bryce Harper. Why?
Harper sells you more tickets. Now that Rhys Hoskins has moved back to first base where he belongs since the Carlos Santana trade, an outfield position is open, perfect for Harper, who would be a perfect righty-lefty compliment in the line-up with Hoskins.
Machado already announced that he doesn't always play hard or hustle. Yet you're going to give him big money for a long time? He's also a diva about where he plays, as he insists on playing shortstop even though he is a brilliant third baseman. The Phillies need help at third. They filled their shortstop hole by acquiring Jean Segura recently.
Phillies management will be meeting with the agents for both Machado and Harper this week. They are "trying to move the needle" and "won't be held hostage by two players". Sounds like the Phils want to get something done soon, whereas the free agents and their agents wouldn't mind dragging negotiations out longer to bolster the asking price.
The fans appreciate that stance. Plus the Phillies are trying to sell tickets before Christmas. I'm sure they would like to make a big move now.
They are also linked to lefty J.A. Happ. Happ is a solid pitcher but he is 35. Do you really want to commit big money and a few years to a 35-year old pitcher?
There's also interest in lefty relievers Andrew Miller or Zach Britton. I feel the Phillies should address catcher and Miami's excellent backstop, J.T. Realmito is apparently on the trading block. A combination of Odubel Herrera and Jorge Alfaro may get it done.
Also reported is that the Phillies may end up keeping second baseman Cesar Hernandez. It would be nice to finally slide Scott Kingery into second, his natural, Gold Glove-winning position, but it seems that no one wants Hernandez after a down year. The Phils believe that Hernandez, finally healed from a broken foot, will rebound, especially in a contract year ( Hernandez will be a free agent after the 2019 season(.
Kingery would be a super-utility guy this season if Hernandez stays. An infield of Hoskins- Hernandez-Segura- Machado would be great both offensively and defensively.
It can't be a good week for players on the bubble like Herrera, Hernandez and Franco, all of whom could be changing uniforms or could be in Clearwater come February.

NFL REVIEW- WEEK 14
A quick review and look ahead at the NFL thru week 14...
Titans over Jaguars-
Who cares? Jacksonville has been one of the biggest disappointments this season.Tennessee, with the faintest of playoff hopes alive at 7-6, plays at the Giants next week.
Lions over Cardinals-
How bad is Arizona? They drop to 3-10 and are in the hunt for the overall No. 1 pick in next spring's draft. Detroit is 5-8 and are what they are- average.
Jets over Bills-
Another meaningless game between two annually losing franchises. When will Jets fire their coach?
Browns over Panthers-
Carolina is 1-6 on the road this season, their sole win against the Eagles at the Linc. They have lost five in a row and are choking, unlikely to make the playoffs after a nice start. The Browns are so much better, winners of five games having winning zero games last year. Carolina has a must-win game at home vs New Orleans next week.
Packers over Falcons-
Green Bay had to win at home against the struggling Falcons, the Pack with an interim coach. Atlanta has only four win with all that talent? Green Bay goes to Chicago next week. Win at Soldier Field and they have the Jets and Lions on tap to end the regular season.
Chargers over Bengals-
The streaking Chargers are right behind Kansas City in AFC West- the same Chiefs team they happen to play this Thursday night at Arrowhead Stadium. Is Cincinnati coach Marvin Lewis gone yet?
Raiders over Steelers-
How can Pittsburgh lose in Oakland? They don't deserve to be in the playoffs yet will probably make it since Baltimore can't step up. Oakland is 3-10 and vying for the no. 1 pick in the spring. The Steelers return home to face angry New England.
Chiefs over Ravens-
Give Baltimore credit for taking Kansas City to overtime at Arrowhead. KC has the inside track for home field advantage in the AFC playoffs. The Ravens still hope to catch the erratic Steelers or grab a wild card spot. KC hosts the chargers on Thursday while Baltimore hosts Tampa Bay.
Dolphins over Patriots-
Crazy finish to an unbelievable Dolphin win. Miami has life at 7-6 while the Pats drop to 9-5 and may have cost themselves home field advantage in the post-season. New England goes to Pittsburgh while the Dolphins face the Vikings in Minnesota.
Saints over Buccaneers-
After an early scare the Saints beat the Bucs, grabbing the top seed in the NFC playoffs with the Ram loss. New Orleans travels to Carolina next week.
Giants over Redskins-
New York is now 5-8 and very easily could've been 6-7 if they had held on against the Eagles.Fool's gold or does New York have something to build on next season? Without a real quarterback Washington is cooked, even at 6-7.
Colts over Texans-
Still work to do for Indy but they won a big road game at hot Houston The colts host the cowboys next week while the Texans try to get back on track as they take on the Jets in New York.. Houston still should win at least 11 games. Will that get them a bye in the playoffs?
49ers over Broncos-
San Francisco surprises with a home victory as they go 3-10 on the year. Denver is dead, even for a wild card berth.
Big game tonight- Minnesota at Seattle, a preview of two wild card teams battling for the playoffs?
In my NFL picks against the spread I went 1-1. On the season I'm still ahead, 17-12.

EAGLES- COWBOYS REVIEW
My thoughts on the devastating Eagles loss in Dallas on Sunday..
-Disgraceful call on the opening kick-off. The fumble that really was a fumble, but a football that no one claimed? Grugier-Hill had the ball, one of many Birds around the fumble. No Cowboys were around the loose football. If the Eagles didn't recover the fumble who did?
That was a key call as it set the tone for the rest of the game. If the call is made correctly Philly gets the ball on the Dallas 18-yard line. We won't know if the offense would've taken the ball in for a shocking touchdown to start the game, but even a field goal puts the Birds in the lead and sets Dallas on its heels.
What's worse, the New York replay guys didn't get it right either. So were they in on the fix as well or are they equally inept?
Needless to say the refs had an awful afternoon, on both sides, but it seemed like the really key calls, the game-scoring plays, went the Cowboys' way. Did Jerry Jones pay off the officials and fix the game? Even if he didn't, were the refs intimidated by Jerry's World? Or was it the NFL wanting America's Team back in the playoffs?
- Listening to Cowboy fans now until next year will be brutal. Even if Dallas chokes in the upcoming playoffs, they will be NFC East champs and will have swept the Eagles. The old America's Team chants will resurface. Obnoxious Dallas fans, crawling out of the woodwork after being silent for so long, are boosting, even though Philadelphia won the Super Bowl last year.
Unless the Eagles somehow sneak into the post-season and face Dallas in a wild card game, there will be no redemption until next season. September seems so far away.
- Carson Wentz came up small. He played better in the 2nd half but in a game when he needed to come up big he didn't. He missed easy throws all afternoon. He looked indecisive at times. Is the knee still bothering him, physically or psychologically?
Bottom line is..this was Wentz' Super bowl a huge game which would've vaulted the Eagles into 1st place in the division and given them a real shot to defend their title in the playoffs. Instead, Wentz looked frustrated and flustered. engineering a comeback late.but clearly frustrated when he never got on the field in overtime.
- The Eagles' tackling continued to be brutal. What happens in practice? In training camp?
- The secondary was brutal again. Dallas picked on Sidney Jones mercilessly. Hopefully he is still injured. I would hate to think he is that bad, considering his highly thought of status when the Eagles picked him in the second round a few years ago. Amari Cooper went by him like Jones was standing still. The secondary is clearly an issue and needs to be addressed by GM Rossman in the draft, in free agency and via trades.
- Speaking of Cooper, the Dallas organization was criticized for giving up a first round pick for the fleet wide receiver. But Cooper changed their season, giving Dallas the deep threat it lacked. The first round pick may have been too expensive but it looks like the pick will be in the high 20s. Cooper, still young at age 24, is worth the investment, especially since he immediately paid dividends.
Meanwhile the Eagles get WR Golden Tate for a third round selection and they are still trying to figure out how to use him. While former assistant coaches Frank Reich and John DiFillipo flourish e;elsewhere, Mike Groh and the other assistants stumble along with Doug Pederson in the Birds' offense.
- Is it any surprise that Philly's defense continues to get gashed by the Dallas running game? I've always hated the "wide-nine" scheme. They don't get the intense pass rush it is intended to get. Plus it allows teams to exploit the middle of the defense.
- Despite the refs' ineptitude, Dallas dominated in all ways. They had 13 possessions, far too much. They doubled the time of possession. The Eagles stunk on third down, both on offense and defense. In the biggest game of the season the Birds blew it. They played hard, as compared to looking non-chalont for parts of the season. The dreadful looses to Carolina, Tennessee and Tampa Bay came back to haunt them in the end.
- Why not try the hurry-up offense when Wentz & co. looked so lethargic in the first half? Too many 3-and-outs. Defense was on the field too long and ran out of gas at the end. Aside form the late deep pass to Agholor ( who made a great catch- the Eagles need to make him the speedy, outside deep threat next season)there was little down the field action. Everything was underneath to the tight ends or running backs, marginal 5-15 yard throws. Safe tosses for Wentz and even with those Wentz missed some easy tosses.
Using Agholor better or finding a fast burner to take the top off opposing defenses should be a priority in 2019.
- Hindsight is 20/20. When Pederson elected to kick the extra point at the end of regulation instead of trying for a two-point conversion to go ahead, I agreed. If you miss the conversion, Dallas runs the clock out, since the birds only had one timeout left.
The concerning thing is that the conversion turned out to be only a one-yard try instead of two yards, due to a Dallas penalty. Pederson of last year would've gone for the victory. Did he turtle-up in the clutch?
- Special teams made a difference. Eagles kicker Elliot missed a crucial extra point in the first half, which haunted the team form then on. Meanwhile Dallas made a hectic, end of the half 63-yard field goal, a franchise record. The bend but don't break philosophy of defensive coordinator Schwartz , playing too soft in the secondary, allows teams to move the ball. Sometimes field goals can be just as big as touchdowns, depending on the situation.
The miss was Elliot's first of the season, and although Elliot has converted clutch kicks since last year, he has botched easier tries. The missed extra point was a killer.
- Ex-Governor Ed Randell went off on Post -Game Live, using profanity that was not bleeped. He cares and he has passion, so I don't fault him. It's a shame how they have put Rendell off to the side in the studio. I agree, he thinks he knows more football than he does, but to have the panel in one location, and lonely Rendell by himself, is a shame.
I still enjoy Ray Didinger and Seth Joyner on the post-game show, and look forward to their commentary and assessments.
- -It's stupid but I would've call heads on the overtime coin toss. Lane Johnson called tails for the Eagles. The Cowboys won the toss, took the ball, scored a touchdown and the Eagles never saw the ball. The game was lost in many other ways but losing the coin toss didn't help. The defense was dog-tired and was forced to go back on field at the end, after Dallas ran an incredible 93 plays all day.
- I can't blame Rasul Douglas for going for the ball at the end. It was bad luck that he tipped it and the ball bounced right to Cooper, who strolled into the end zone. Overtime was strange because it is only 10 minutes long now and the Cowboys had the ball for the first eight minutes. Even if they kicked a field goal, the birds would've gotten the ball back to either tie or go ahead with one last drive, but if the clock ran out they would not have gotten that shot. If Dallas got a first down near the goal line at the end, the Cowboys could've bled the clock and booted a game-winning field goal . So Douglas' effort was smart, even if he did allow Cooper behind him for the touchdown.
- Why did the Eagles defer to begin the game? Last week they got the ball first and scored a touchdown against the Redskins. But, after winning the toss in Dallas, why not take the ball and ram it down Dallas' throats?
Luckily, there weren't too many shot of evil Jerry Jones celebrating in his box. The Dallas owner has his yes-men around him, all smiles, and I felt like throwing-up. Whether he fixed the game or not, whether he intimidated the refs or the league or not, I don't need to see Jones and his cronies yukking it up.
Also, when push comes to shove, no matter how good he is at analyzing the game. former Cowboy quarterback Troy Aikman is still a Cowboy at heart, disagreeing on several calls which went against Dallas, and not vocal enough when Philadelphia was screwed. I like Aikman as a color guy, far more than fellow ex-Cowboy broadcasters Romo and Witten, but hate him when he is doing a Dallas game.
Unfortunately, with the Cowboy resurrection we will see even more of America's Team next season in prime-time as the networks milk their resurgence.
- Finally, it was an embarrassment for the Eagles to celebrate after their first touchdown. Humiliating. A disgrace. The Eagles were still losing at the point. It showed how the team and organization celebrated too much all year, were fat and sassy and full of themselves. Dallas players went over and tried to break up the celebration in the back of the end zone, rightfully so. All of it was planned and it seemed contrived and phony. I was ashamed to be an Eagle fan when it happened. Wentz should've taken control, Pederson should've screamed at the players coming off the field. and owner Jeff Lurie should be pissed and embarrassed.
- So what does it all mean? Dallas goes to 8-5 and will win the East. No team has won the East in consecutive years since the 2004 Eagles. If form holds true, Dallas won't win it next year. The Eagles dropped to 6-7, two games behind Dallas and lose the tie-breaker by getting swept by the Cowboys. Philly has faint hope of getting a wild card berth. They would need to run the table by winning their final three games and going 9-7. That won't happen as the Eagles play the Rams next week in LA, face a 9-4 Houston team at the Linc before Christmas, then finish at Washington.
I hate the fact that the Eagles may not get a chance to defend their title in the post-season but it's their own fault. A month ago they had the chance to beat Dallas at home on Sunday Night Football and they choked. They played hard in Dallas but too many times this season they looked unmotivated, fat and sassy and didn't play hard enough.
So in 2019 they get a higher draft pick, easier schedule and maybe come back more motivated. They have a a boatload of picks next spring. Not as much fun as winning a Super Bowl, having a parade and basking in the glow for ten months, but it is what it is.
-Disgraceful call on the opening kick-off. The fumble that really was a fumble, but a football that no one claimed? Grugier-Hill had the ball, one of many Birds around the fumble. No Cowboys were around the loose football. If the Eagles didn't recover the fumble who did?
