- Was the game fixed last night? How else can one explain the shocking 13-10 Dallas win over the 10-1 Saints? The victory was a surprise, as New Orleans has been crushing it's opponents this season. The Saints played like a road team on a short week. Dallas has been playing well ( thanks to the Eagles, who could've buried their season several weeks ago.
But more alarming was the 23 total points scored all night. Heck, New Orleans itself averages 38 points a game. Was the Dallas defense that good? It's true that Las Vegas has been taking a beating on over/under bets involving the Saints.
Also true is the fact that the NFL and the TV networks love when the Cowboys are good and make the playoffs. They help ratings, no matter how bad or disgusting they are.
It was a prime-time game, a game Dallas needed more than New Orleans. So a Cowboy win, despite thee fact they were 7 1/2 point home underdogs, isn't all that surprising. I'm not surprised that Dallas was up for the game; I was surprised how flat the Saints were, especially for a big game.
I get it- they don't play as well on the road. And Saints' head coach Sean Peyton coached a terrible game, using up all of his challenges in the first half.
In the end, it makes the road for the Eagles tougher to win the NFC East. Not only must the birds win the next two weeks, plus the season finale in Washington, they may need to at least split between the Rams and Texans. If Philly beats Washington this Monday night, then parleys that win in Dallas on Sunday Night, they will tie Dallas for the division lead. Looking at the schedule, the Eagles have the tougher home stretch...
@ Los Angeles Rams
Houston
@ Washington
Dallas' remaining schedule after the Eagles next week..
@ Indianapolis
Tampa Bay
@ New York Giants
Even if the Cowboys do win the East and make the playoffs, I can't see them going beyond a home game. Could we really imagine Dallas winning in LA or New Orleans?
It looked like evil Jerry Jones ( he sure did celebrate last night..) may have made the right move by getting wide receiver Amari Cooper from Oakland for the 1st round draft pick. Cooper has given Dallas a reliable, speedy receiver. He is young (24) and has opened up Elliot and the running game .
The Cowboys gave up a 1st round pick next spring for Cooper. If they do make the playoffs that pick will be in the mid-high 20s.
The Eagles are to blame for all of this. Dallas resurrected their season by outplaying the Birds on Sunday Night Football about a month ago. They had a chance to drive the stake in the heart of the 'Boys. Instead they let them off the hook and now, suddenly, Dallas gets all the calls and has life off the respirator.
In the end hopefully justice will prevail.
-The baseball Winter Meetings start on December 9. Rumors are intense as to possible trades. The Braves and Mets are already improved. The Phillies remain silent. GM Klentak needs to do something.
Word is that the Phils are more interested in Manny Machado than Bryce Harper. Personally, I want Harper. He would give them a nice righty-lefty combo in the middle of the line-up along with Rhys Hoskins. Machado has already announced that he isn't the "Johnny Hustle-type" of player. Harper is sometimes a slacker too, but at least Harper isn't dumb enough to flaunt it.
If the Phillies sign Machado, he needs to play third base, where he has a Gold Glove. If Cesar Hernandez isn't traded ( his worth is diminished in baseball), than Hernandez would continue to play second base and Scott Kingery would play shortstop (along with J.P. Crawford). You're giving Machado around $300 million yet Machado is going to dictate to the team about where he is to play?
Meanwhile, lefty Patrick Corbin makes the rounds from the Phillies to the Yankees. Lefty reliever Andrew Miller is also on the free agent radar. The team needs .300 hitters, so guys like A. J. Pollack make sense.
Atlanta signed Donaldson and McCann. The Mets are ready to obtain Cano and Diaz.Klentak needs to step up soon.
