- Was the game fixed last night? How else can one explain the shocking 13-10 Dallas win over the 10-1 Saints? The victory was a surprise, as New Orleans has been crushing it's opponents this season. The Saints played like a road team on a short week. Dallas has been playing well ( thanks to the Eagles, who could've buried their season several weeks ago.
But more alarming was the 23 total points scored all night. Heck, New Orleans itself averages 38 points a game. Was the Dallas defense that good? It's true that Las Vegas has been taking a beating on over/under bets involving the Saints.
Also true is the fact that the NFL and the TV networks love when the Cowboys are good and make the playoffs. They help ratings, no matter how bad or disgusting they are.
It was a prime-time game, a game Dallas needed more than New Orleans. So a Cowboy win, despite thee fact they were 7 1/2 point home underdogs, isn't all that surprising. I'm not surprised that Dallas was up for the game; I was surprised how flat the Saints were, especially for a big game.
I get it- they don't play as well on the road. And Saints' head coach Sean Peyton coached a terrible game, using up all of his challenges in the first half.
In the end, it makes the road for the Eagles tougher to win the NFC East. Not only must the birds win the next two weeks, plus the season finale in Washington, they may need to at least split between the Rams and Texans. If Philly beats Washington this Monday night, then parleys that win in Dallas on Sunday Night, they will tie Dallas for the division lead. Looking at the schedule, the Eagles have the tougher home stretch...
@ Los Angeles Rams
Houston
@ Washington
Dallas' remaining schedule after the Eagles next week..
@ Indianapolis
Tampa Bay
@ New York Giants
Even if the Cowboys do win the East and make the playoffs, I can't see them going beyond a home game. Could we really imagine Dallas winning in LA or New Orleans?
It looked like evil Jerry Jones ( he sure did celebrate last night..) may have made the right move by getting wide receiver Amari Cooper from Oakland for the 1st round draft pick. Cooper has given Dallas a reliable, speedy receiver. He is young (24) and has opened up Elliot and the running game .
The Cowboys gave up a 1st round pick next spring for Cooper. If they do make the playoffs that pick will be in the mid-high 20s.
The Eagles are to blame for all of this. Dallas resurrected their season by outplaying the Birds on Sunday Night Football about a month ago. They had a chance to drive the stake in the heart of the 'Boys. Instead they let them off the hook and now, suddenly, Dallas gets all the calls and has life off the respirator.
In the end hopefully justice will prevail.
-The baseball Winter Meetings start on December 9. Rumors are intense as to possible trades. The Braves and Mets are already improved. The Phillies remain silent. GM Klentak needs to do something.
Word is that the Phils are more interested in Manny Machado than Bryce Harper. Personally, I want Harper. He would give them a nice righty-lefty combo in the middle of the line-up along with Rhys Hoskins. Machado has already announced that he isn't the "Johnny Hustle-type" of player. Harper is sometimes a slacker too, but at least Harper isn't dumb enough to flaunt it.
If the Phillies sign Machado, he needs to play third base, where he has a Gold Glove. If Cesar Hernandez isn't traded ( his worth is diminished in baseball), than Hernandez would continue to play second base and Scott Kingery would play shortstop (along with J.P. Crawford). You're giving Machado around $300 million yet Machado is going to dictate to the team about where he is to play?
Meanwhile, lefty Patrick Corbin makes the rounds from the Phillies to the Yankees. Lefty reliever Andrew Miller is also on the free agent radar. The team needs .300 hitters, so guys like A. J. Pollack make sense.
Atlanta signed Donaldson and McCann. The Mets are ready to obtain Cano and Diaz.Klentak needs to step up soon.

College Football traditions
Traveler and USC
Traveler is the pure white horse that appears at all USC home games at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Jockeyed by the Trojan warrior mascot, when USC scores, Traveler and his rider gallop up and down the sideline while the USC Marching Band plays "Conquest."
Traveler was named after the horse of Civil War Confederate general Robert E. Lee. Earlier attempts at a mascot for USC included a series of dogs named "George Tirebiter." USC settled on Traveler after the horse's ride at the 1961 Rose Bowl Parade. Unlike Georgia's famous Ugas, which have all been English bulldogs from the same bloodline, the Travelers haven't been of the same breed.

EAGLES- REDSKINS- MY PICK
Monday Night Football at Lincoln Financial Field... a mild December night..two division rivals playing for first place. Frenzied fans, three weeks before Christmas Eve. That will be the scene soon as the Eagles play Washington.
If Dallas loses tonight vs New Orleans, Monday's game will be for first place in NFC East. The defending Super Bowl champs face the 6-5 Redskins. The Eagles need to win their three remaining division games. Playing the Rams in Los Angeles will be tough. So will playing hot Houston at the Linc.
The Birds don't deserve to make the playoffs if they can't beat QB Colt McCoy in a prime-time game. Then again, they lost a key Sunday Night game recently to Dallas, taking the Cowboys off life-support.
As always, turnovers will be key, as will penalties. QB Carson Wentz needs to step up again. Running the ball will be big, as we saw last week vs the Giants. Using Adams, Clement and Smallwood will control the ball and the clock. Hopefully a few of the injured, especially in the secondary, will return.
Getting off to a fast start would be a welcome change for the Eagles. Even last week they were down 19-3 at one point to New York. Starting out 14-0 over Washington would force McCoy to throw the ball. The Philly defensive line could t-off on McCoy. Force turnovers. Maybe the reason why the Eagles are down in turnover sthis season is because they are always behind and seemingly never put pressure on the opposition.
If ever the Eagles needed a big win to ride the momentum into Dallas next Sunday night, it's this game. A blow-out would send a message to Dallas and the rest of the NFC that the champs intend to at least go down fighting.

NFL PREVIEW- WEEK 13
The weekend ahead in the NFL..
Saints at Cowboys-
Tonight on Thursday Night Football. The 10-1 Saints hit the road after a short week- never a good thing. 6-5 Dallas is playing better, and a win tonight boasts their chances of winning the NFC East before they face the Eagles next week. New Orleans is hot, so I like them to win, if not blow-out the cowboys.
Ravens at Falcons-
Enough Atlanta. Every time they have a must-win game, especially at home, they blow it. Baltimore has an outside shot at AFC North and a wild card spot if they finish strong.
Broncos at Bengals-
Coach Marvin Lewis is a goner after the season. Both teams are no factors in their division.
Rams at Lions-
The Rams still hope to get the overall No. 1 seed in the upcoming playoffs. Detroit is wildly inconsistent and is playing out the string again. The Rams are favored by 10 points on the road and I wouldn't be surprised to see them cover.
Cardinals at Packers-
Two more teams playing out the season. The desert Cards playing outdoors in cold Green Bay. I think the Pack take out their frustrations and crush Arizona,
Bills at Dolphins-
Another meaningless game as we inch towards the end of the season.
Bears at Giants-
After New York collapsed last week in Philly, they are done for the season. Even at home, I see the Bears, who are striving for the NFC North title, beating the G-men convincingly.
Panthers at Buccaneers-
The game is at Tampa Bay but Carolina needs the game to hang with New Orleans.
Colts at Jaguars-
Surprising Colts at the disappointing Jags, with Jacksonville QB Blake Bortles on the bench. Indy has a chance at a wild card spot so they should win.
Browns at Texans-
Much-improved Brownies goes to red-hot Houston, winners of 8 games in a row. The Texans keep the pedal to the metal and win again.
Jets at Titans-
Tennessee needs the game more, at home and should crush the Jets.
Chiefs at Raiders-
This used to be a classic rivalry. Now, Oakland is home as a 16-point underdog. The Chiefs continue to roll.
Vikings at Patriots-
Great game. Both teams need it. New England has their division wrapped up, again, but need to keep winning to get a playoff bye.
49ers at Seahawks-
Seattle at home, surging for a wild card berth. No-brainer victory for Seahawks.
Chargers at Steelers-
I like Pittsburgh at home, even if the weather should be mild Sunday night. The Chargers are for real and should make the playoffs, win or lose this week.
Last week I went 1-1 against the spread in the NFL. For the season I am 15-10. This week I'm taking..
- Bears - 4 1/2
- Texans - 5 1/2

IN THE NEWS- UBER PROMISES MORE TIMELY ACCESSIBLE RIDES
This article is from MassLive.com
A new business model by ride-hailing company Uber means quicker pickup times for passengers in wheelchairs in several U.S. cities.
Uber's Chief Executive Officer Dara Khosrowshahi announced this month that customers in the Greater Boston area can now access wheelchair-accessible vehicles through Uber with an average pickup wait time of 15 minutes or less.
The announcement comes months after Ube partnered with MV Transportation., a Texas-based company and one of the largest privately-owned passenger transportation firms in the country. The partnership gave Uber access to MV's fleets of drivers and wheelchair-accessible vehicles.
Uber has historically relied on its driver workforce to supply their own cars, which have meant there are few cars that can accommodate wheelchairs.
"There simply aren't enough people who personally own WAV's who also choose to drive with Uber," Khosrowshahi said in a statement. He added that in many cities, paratranssit options require booking far in advance and long wait times as passengers are picked up and dropped off in various locations.
Uber hopes to change that model by allowing those in wheelchairs to get around as quickly as all passengers. The company says it is investing millions in these services because accessible transportation is a priority.
"We'll likely invest tens of millions of dollars into this partnership in the first year," said Uber spokeswoman Alix Anfang.
The improved service by Uber is available in Greater Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Chicago and Toronto.
The company hopes to implement improve wheelchair access in San Francisco and Los Angeles this year. The eight cities combined make up for half of all Uber trips in North America according to Khosrowshahi.

IN THE NEWS- SANTA READY TO GO SENSORY-FRIENDLY
This timely article is offered by Disability Scoop..
Just in time for the holidays, a series of special events across the country will offer calmer environments for children with disabilities to enjoy some one-on-one time with Santa Claus.
Over 400 malls and other shopping destinations from Maryland to Hawaii will host sensory-friendly experiences with Santa, most of which will be held Dec. 2 or Dec. 9.
The events advertised under a variety of names including 'Santa Cares," "Caring Santa" and "Sensitive Santa," will be held during off-hours to avoid crowds and allow for adjustments to the malls' lighting and sounds.
Participating Santas have been trained to take cues from parents and caregivers in order to meet each child's individual needs, organizers say. Some are even knowledgeable in American Sign Language.
"Most of all, Santa remains flexible, kneeling next to a wheelchair, standing behind his chair to capture the photo or simply allowing extra time for each visitor to experience a time-honored holiday tradition," said Ruth Rosenquist of Cherry Hill Programs, which is organizing the events along with Autism Speaks.
Unlike most Santa experiences, families are asked to reserve a time slot in advance for the special sensory-friendly events. Then, each child will be called up individually in order to avoid waiting in line. Quiet activities will be available to entertain kids while they wait.
The events are open to anyone with special needs and families can sign up online to participate.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- FLYERS, PHILLIES,SIXERS, EAGLES
- The Flyers fired General Manager Ron Hextall yesterday. About time. He was too slow in building the team and bringing up the young kids. Most of all, and ironically, he failed to bring in a proven, No. 1 goaltender.
With Hextall out the door it looks like coach Dave Hakstol is out too soon. Hextall made the mistake of hiring the inexperienced Hakstol. For some reason Hexstall insisted on hiring guys who coached his son.
It will be interesting to see how the squad plays tonight, at home against Ottawa. Rookie goalie Carter Hart needs to come up. An article published yesterday read how Hart was frustrated when he didn't make the Flyers out of training camp. Rather than going with marginal, mediocre, older goalies, why not ride your talented kid and allow him to grow alongside your other blossoming stars?
Right now the team is 10-11 and struggling. Kudos to Flyers' President Paul Holgren for pulling the plug on Hexstall. It's not too late to turn the season around. In the long-run it will be interesting to see what happens after a new GM is hired.
- Rumors of a big Phillies trade with Arizona surfaced yesterday. All-Star 1st basesman Paul Goldschmidt is on the trading block. Phils management apparently approach the Diamondbacks recently, with a proposed deal being worked out. This was the reported deal: Phillies get: Goldschmidt and pitcher Zach Grinke ( who has $105 million for 3 more years on the books). Dbacks get: outfielder Odubel Herrera, pitchers Zach Eflin, Vince Valasquez and Adonis Medina. When the Phillies insisted the Snakes take Carlos Santana as well, they backed off.
Phillies management seem to be acknowledging that they made a huge mistake by signing the inconsistent Santana. He's an older player without a position and is limited where he can play. He strikes out too much, walks a lot, and his average is generally poor. He hits an occasional home run and is below average in the field.
Maybe the Phils can still make the deal at the upcoming Winter Meetings, but without Santana. Better to seek an American League team , where Santana can possibly be a designated hitter.
Other hot rumors: The SF Giants are talking about trading ace lefty Madison Bumgarner. Apparently the Phils have already talked to San Francisco about Bumgarner. Along with Aaron Nola he would give the team a potent 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation.
Also, rumors persist that the team wants a lefty reliever to go along with Adam Morgan. Andrew Miller, former Yankee and Indian, is on the short-list.
Seems like the organization is going all-in on proven stars and ready to deal prospects. High-prospect stud Sixto Sanchez may be the only real untouchable on the farm.
I love Paul Goldschmidt- but he plays first base. Rhys Hoskins would have to stay in left field, where he has shown he sucks. Plus the Phillies may only have Goldschmidt for this season. I would rather have Goldie at first for one season than Santana at first for two more seasons.
Phillies' GM Matt Klentak could be the next GM to go if he doesn't improve the team this off-season. The Sixers' Elton Brand is safe; so is the Eagles' Howie Rossman, despite this subpar season. The process of elimination leaves Klentak as the odd executive out.
- The Sixers watch as head-case Markelle Fultz gets his so-called injured shoulder examined in New York tomorrow. The Sixers are actively shopping Fultz, but who will take him, and what would be the return/ The best the team can hope for is a solid veteran ( like a Kyle Korver) who would help this year. They won't get a first rounder for Fultz and a second rounder is useless.
- The Eagles are 6 1/2 point favorites this Monday night against Washington. A win ( along with a Cowboy loss on Thursday night to New Orleans) gives theBirds a tie in NFC East. That would set up another huge division match-up the following Sunday night in Dallas.
Will the Birds continue to run the ball effectively vs the Redskins as they did vs the giants? Running the ball controls the clock, gives the injured defense a rest and protects Carson Wentz from sacks. Running the ball would also open up more deep throws down the field. Use Josh Adams and Corey Clemente and run the ball down Washington's throat.
- Houston won it's 8th game in a row last night. The Texans come to Philly in Week 16 to play the Eagles. The weather and the need to win should benefit the Eagles.

NFL REVIEW- WEEK 12
Aside from the three Thanksgiving games already discussed, here is a break-down of Sunday's games..
Bills over Jaguars-
Is Jacksonville the biggest disappointment of the season? Who cares who they play next week.
Browns over Bengals-
Cleveland wins two in a row and breaks their 25-game losing streak on the road. They were only one road loss away from tying the Lioms' record of 26 in a row away from home as losers. Meanwhile, after a fats start, Cincinnati has predictably crashed back down to Earth. If Coach Marvin Lewis isn't either fired or resigns after the season, something is wrong. The Browns go for three in a row next weekend at red-hot Houston, while the Bengals stay home to host Denver.
Patriots over Jets-
New York is pathetic while New England tries to stay within distance of getting a playoff bye. Overall, looks like Kansas City will earn home field advantage in the post-season, which may cost Tom Brady yet another Super Bowl.
Buccaneers over 49ers-
Two more bad teams,Tampa Bay played Winston at QB. Both are playing out the string.
Seahawks over Panthers-
In a wildly entertaining game, Seattle stays alive, at least for a playoff berth. They won't catch the rams for the division, thus they will have to play a first round game. Carolina still has two games left with the Saints or else they will be a dangerous wold card club in the playoffs. The Panthers lost their first home game all season.
Ravens over Raiders-
No surprise, as Oakland sucks and they had to fly across the country. Baltimore has a glimmer of hope, as they venture to disappointing Atlanta next week.
Chargers over Cardinals-
After starting slow, the Chargers, behind QB Philip Rivers ( who went an incredible 28-29 passing), demolished Arizona and kept their wild card hopes strong. LA crosses the country and plays a huge game in Pittsburgh next weekend.
Broncos over Steelers-
Pittsburgh is fortunate that they aren't being pressed too hard in AFC North. Baltimore still has an outside shot. But if the Steelers continue to lose, there goes their playoff bye and home field advantage.
Colts over Dolphins-
Indy continues to roll and has it's eyes set on a wild card berth. Indianapolis hits the road the next two weeks for games against the Jags and Texans.
Vikings over Packers-
Minnesota took care of business at home while Rodgers and the Pack should be done. The Vikes go to New England next week.
In my NFL picks, I stand 15-9 against the spread for the season.

THIS DAY IN SPROTS HISTORY- NOVEMBER 26
College Football Traditions=
The University of Michigan Wolverines' helmet
The unique maize and blue design of Michigam's football helmet has nothimg to do with wolverines. The horned stripes were conceived by newly hired Head Coach Fritz Crisler in 1938 upon his arrival from Princeton. Crisler thought the unusual pattern would help his passers spot receivers downfield.
EAGLES-GIANTS WRAP-UP
Sizing up the big eagles 25-22 win over New York..
- The Eagles own the Giants. They have now won 5 in a row over New York, 17 of the last 21 games, and have tied the overall series at 86-86.
- Did the Giants tank in the 2nd half to get a higher draft pick? After torching the Birds early, why didn't Barkley get the ball more often in the 2nd half? Beckham Jr. became invisible as well. Yes, the Eagles' defense stepped up and gave some sacks on Eli manning, or at least made him move out of the pocket. but why did New York Coach Pat Schurmer change his game-plan when it was working?
- Penalties had a big part of yesterday's game. A holding penalty on Jason Kelsey cost the Eagles a 52-yard touchdown run by Josh Adams, who is looking more like a future feature back. Lack of a penalty call also cost the G-men late, when it looked like Beckham Jr. was held at the goal line during a late Giant drive.
Turnovers were also key, and unlike most of the season, the Eagles came out on top. Malcolm Jenkins' key interception late kept the Giants from trying a field goal.
- The Giants are a really bad team. They should've blown Philly out in the first half. They were up 19-3 at one point. If it wasn't for New York shooting itself in the foot time and time again, the G-men looked like they could move the ball a twill against a young and porous Eagle D.
New York drops to 3-8. They do need a young quarterback, but the Giants need so much more. Contending is still years away for Big Blue.
- It became clear that the Eagles need a speedy receiver, a LeSean Jackson-type who can take the top off the defense. Teams like the Giants are keeping eight men in the box and daring Philadelphia to throw bombs. Going deep would open up the running game and opening the middle for Ertz and the slot receivers.
- When Coach Doug Pederson went to the no-huddle offense it seemed to jump-start the team. Going no-huddle should be done more often, in my opinion, if only to give defenses a different look.
- Even though the giants were at the one-yard line, why did New York go for two points after their initial touchdown? It seemed to kill their momentum.
- Kudos to Jake Elliot for making the last-second game -winning field goal. If he had missed it we would've been talking about Elliot even more. He quietly booted the field goal right down the middle, giving the birds a must-win. He slayed the Giants again, after stunning them last season on a last-second 61-yarder.
- Since it wasn't a big game Fox had it's lower-tier announcers doing the game. Chris Spielman, former linebacker, mediocre broadcaster, kept saying the Eagles were 4-7, when in reality their record was 4-6. Simple but important facts.
So, what does it all mean? The Eagles go 5-6, a game behind Dallas and Washington in NFC East. Dallas plays red-hot New Orleans on Thursday Night Football, while Philly hosts the Redskins next Monday Night. A victory over the Skins would make the birds 6-6, tied with their two division rivals. A trip to Dallas awaits the week after, then a stop in Los Angeles to play the Rams.
Maybe the Eagles will not win the division and won't make the playoffs. If they do get in they get a home game but probably won't go far.Give the Birds credit for not giving up. They should have more pride, as defending Super bowl champs, then to surrender their crown without a fight. Once in, anything can happen.

EAGLES VS GIANTS- THE PICK
I've been going back and forth with this game all week. I called my friend, Steve Trevelise, overnight Friday/Saturday on WIP Sports Radio, sure it may take another "Miracle at the Meadowlands" type of event for the Eagles to win. Now I'm not so sure.
The Birds' secondary will be starting three players who were on the streets a few weeks ago. If the Eagles don't get pressure on New York QB Eli Manning, forcing him out of the pocket and throw on the run, he will pick them apart. The secondary isn't good enough to cover WR Odell Beckham, Jr. The Giants' offensive line is poor, but Fletcher Cox and company need a big day.
Philadelphia's offense has also struggled. They lack a consistent running game, plus they don't have a speedy wide receiver who will stretch the field and open up the middle and running game.
The Eagles'special teams have been non-existant. They continue to get little from their kick-off and punt return games.
A loss would drop the defending Super bowl champs to 4-7, bad enough for last place in NFC East. A win makes the Birds 5-6, setting up a Monday Night Football clash with 6-5 Washington next week. A win at the Linc would then prepare the team for a Sunday Night revenge game in Dallas. So, despite their many failures the Eagles still have a legitimate shot to get into the play-offs.
Something screwy always happens in Eagles-Giants' games. And they usually are close games, generally decided by a field goal. Even though the Eagles are home and desperate, I can't see them running away with this one.
New York can control the ball with RB Barkley. Manning can check-down and throw short passes to his wide-outs, as I'm sure Defensive Coordinator Schwartz will play soft ( as usual) on defense.
Turnovers usually decide a football game. The Eagles have not produced enough turnovers all season. Today they must get Manning to turn the ball over several times.Penalties also can decide a close game. The Eagles must play smart and not give the Giants any easy scores.
The weather is supposed to be dry and mild. Philly has lost it's last three home games, unheard of.If the Eagles have any pride at all as defending champs, they will step up against a lowly Giants team take control early, and erase the bad taste from last weeks' embarrassing loss to New Orleans.
So, I'm saying the season doesn't end today. There is a glimmer of hope. Make it Eagles 23 Giants 17

Ever wonder what to say or do when visiting an older loved one, either in a nursing home setting, assistive living, or even at home or in your neighborhood? Worry about running out of things to say? Intimidated by dementia? Frustrated because he/she can't recall past visits? I can show you how to ease your fears and make your visits more meaningful!
The presentation includes:
- Viewing of award-winning film, "Peege"
- Discussion and Questions
- My `0 tips for terrific visits
- Brochures and information.
RSVP: Online on the Adult Events Calendar at www.phoenixvillelibrary.org or by calling 610-933-3013 X 132.
As a social worker for over 30 years working in nursing homes, to a family member visiting loved ones over the years, to receiving visits myself, I can relate to potential loneliness and how important visits from family and friends really are to the health and well-being of someone who is ill or confined.
This topic has been important to me for many years, as my residents would often wonder why they did not receive more visits, or families would also come to me, seeking advice how to make their visits more meaningful, fun and memorable. So, I devised this presentation with the goal of helping more families/friends connect, bond and feel at ease during these special moments.
Thank you. I look forward to seeing you there on December 10th!

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- SIXERS, FLYERS, EAGLES
- The Sixers suffered an embarrassing loss at home on Black Friday night, defeated by the worst team in the NBA, the Cleveland Cavaliers, 121-112. Prior to last night the 76ers had not lost a game at the Wells Fargo Center this season. The Cavs had not won a game on the road. Easy game, eh?Philadelphia was an 11 1/2 point favorite.
Philly came out flat and, despite a comeback attempt late, faded to the lowly Cavs. Ben Simmons, legit or not, told the media the excuse was "too much food over Thanksgiving."
As I have said many times, the Sixers won't go anywhere without a new coach. I'm glad I took the team to win under 54 games this year. They are too inconsistent, injury-prone and still not ready for prime time.
- Meanwhile the Flyers played a complete game Friday afternoon during their annual Black Friday game, defeating the New York Rangers 4-0. Can they continue the momentum tonight on the road in Toronto?
- Finally, the Eagles are preparing for their key division battle Sunday afternoon vs the Giants. A loss and they drop to 4-7. The secondary is featuring three guys who were on the street several weeks ago. The offense is still a problem. Guys are hurt. Coaches are over their head. They are a mess.
I'll have my prediction on Eagles-Giants tomorrow morning.

THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY- NOVEMBER 24/25
"Football was Mr. Kennedy's game"
On November 24, 1963, two days after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, and with the nation still in mourning, NBA, NHL, and AFL games all were canceled. But the NFL's Pete Rozelle and the league played a complete schedule. Rozelle would late call it his worst decision as NFL commissioner.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- NFL FOOTBALL, SIXERS, FLYERS,NFL PREVIEW
- On Thanksgiving Day pro football, the Bears pulled out a 4th quarter victory over the host Lions. Chicago solidifies their lead in NFC North. They will make the playoffs. The Bears' defense will be reckoned with in the post-season, even against potent offenses like the Rams and Saints.
I always hate Dallas to win, but they may have helped Philadelphia yesterday by beating Washington.. If the Eagles beat the Giants on Sunday at the Linc, they sudden;y move to 5-6. next week Dallas plays 10-1 New Orleans while the Birds take on the Redskins in Monday Night Football. All three NFC East teams could be 6-6 after next week.
The Saints keep rolling along, defeating disappointing Atlanta on Thanksgiving night.
- The Sixers- without troubled rookie Markelle Fultz- play the worse team in the NBA tonight in South Philly. The Cleveland Cavaliers stumble into town to cap off a Black Friday doubleheader at the Wells Fargo Center.
- Meanwhile the Flyers play their annual Black Friday afternoon game against the New York Rangers, After losing 5-2 in Buffalo on Wednesday the Orange and Black need to turnaround things fast.
- With 3 less games on the docket, here is a preview of the rest of the NFL card..
Giants at Eagles-
See post after this one for my Eagles- Giants pick.
Jaguars at Bills-
Meaningless game in chilly upstate New York. Will QB Matt Barkley again play well for the bills?
Browns at Bengals-
Cleveland has improved somewhat this season but remain in the cellar of AFC North. Cincinnati, after starting off fast, has disappointed. Coach Marvin Lewis needs to be fired.
Patriots at Jets-
New England can't let up if they want home field advantage in the playoffs. The Jets are playing for pride.
49ers at Buccaneers-
San Francisco is in the hunt for the 1st overall draft pick next spring. Tampa Bay, also after a quick start, are playing out the string with a quarterback controversy.
Seahawks at Panthers-
Bot clubs need a win to stay within shouting distance of the 10-1 division leaders. Seahawks cross the country, don't do well with time change. like Carolina here.
Raiders at Ravens-
Likewise, Raiders cross America, only to get lynched by Ravens. I like Baltimore to explode with big win.
Cardinals at Chargers-
LA hit bump in the road last week, need a win to stay in playoff chase. Cards are playing it out with 2-8 record.
Steelers at Broncos-
Pittsburgh survived against Jacksonville. Cold game in Denver. Upset by Broncos?
Dolphins at Colts-
Indianapolis sits at 5-5, two games behind Houston in AFC South. They need a win more than Miami.
Packers at Vikings-
Minnesota at home need a win to hang with surprising Chicago. Can Aaron Rodgers pull an upset?
Titans at Texans-
Hot Houston tries to keep their two game lead by playing division-rival Tennessee, The Titans have beaten some really good teams this season yet remain at .500.
My NFL picks this week. I am 14-8 against the spread this season..
- Panthers - 3 1/2
- Colts - 7 1/2

"Harvard Wins, 29-29!"
On this day in 1968, undefeated Yale was comfortably ahead of unbeaten Harvard, 29-13, with 42 seconds left, when the Harvard Crimson scored two touchdowns and made two 2-point conversions as time ran out in the greatest finale of the long-storied rivalry.
Both teams shared the Ivy League title. The headline in the Harvard student newspaper the next day read "Harvard Wins, 29-29"

IN MY LIFE- THANKSGIVING MEMORIES
Happy Thanksgiving!
Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. Why? It's family oriented. It's not about gifts or candy or even sending greeting cards. It's very basic and meaningful: giving thanks to God for your blessings. Thanking and appreciating your loved ones, family and friends. Spending time together . How often do we even eat meals together anymore? On Thanksgiving we all sit down together in one place at one time, like we used to do.
Start with dinner. Does anything smell better than a turkey roasting on Thanksgiving Eve on on Thanksgiving morning? I'll take dark meat!
I love stuffing and cranberry sauce, but pass on mashed potatoes and candied yams/sweet potatoes. Warm baked apples, green and black olives, white corn, soft dinner rolls- all make excellent side dishes to the turkey.
What's the feeling on other entrees other than turkey on Turkey Day? To each his own. Lasagna or some other Italian food is popular. What about chicken or capon? Generally ham or roast beef is saved until Christmas, when turkey leftovers are either gone or tiresome.
What is your feeling about leftovers? You can do a lot with turkey. My favorite turkey leftover is a plain turkey sandwich. Give me a few slices of bird, lettuce ( not romaine), a slab of mayo, salt on a roll or between two pieces of bread, and I'm good to go.
Movies- there's really only one movie you can talk about regarding Thanksgiving- "Trains, Planes and Automobiles". the classic film starring Steve Martin and John Candy. It's a tradition to watch it around thanksgiving. Just as "A Christmas Story" is playing every year in a marathon, so should TP&A around Turkey Day.
Honorable mention is "Miracle On 34th Street." It's really a Christmas movie, but it starts on Thanksgiving Day morning during New York's annual Macy's Parade. I love the movie, especially Edmund Gwynn's portrayal of Santa Claus and the strikingly beautiful Maureen O'Hara.
Speaking of Thanksgiving Day parades, I'm not one to watch them, either in person or on TV. Kudos to the hearty souls who do go, especially this year with wind chills in the teens, despite the sunny skies. The balloons are always the best. I do love the pre-Christmas feel of the parades.Gets you in the mood!
Black Friday is always a special day but I never go shopping on Black Friday. true, you can get a lot of good deals, but with Cyber Monday now, and the weekend before Christmas, deal, steals and bargains can be had. Too much congestion and traffic on Black Friday, in and out of the malls. Still, I do love the malls after Thanksgiving, seeing all the decorations, the lights, the music, everything pointing toward the holidays. There's a certain hustle and bustle which adds excitement to life.
Songs- not many Thanksgiving -related tunes. I suppose "We Gather Together" is the one we associate most with Thanksgiving, but what about "Bless This House".
Our family tradition was always to go to church on Thanksgiving morning, then attend the local high school football game at 10 am.Phoenixville vs Great Valley was always the Turkey Day match-up. Now it's Phoenixville vs Spring-Ford. The come home for the big dinner around noon. Football would be on, the traditional early game hosted by Detroit. Dallas plays later and now there's a third game on at night.
Today's games are:
Bears at Lions- 12:30
Redskins at Cowboys 4:30
Falcons at Saints 8:30
Mom would always love making a turkey and all the fixings. When she got sick we ordered the turkey out so she wouldn't have to prepare. When the day was over I asked her how it went. She replied 'OK, but I didn't do anything"
"But that was the point," I said.
Next Thanksgiving we got a turkey but Mom set the table and mashed the potatoes. I learned she needed to do something. She didn't want to totally lose her independence. Not making dinner at thanksgiving was a sign of her slowing down. She had her pride and the family needed to see that and respect it. So, if simply allowing her to set the table was important to her, by all means.
It was a great lesson for everyone

Happy Thanksgiving!

NFL PREVIEW- WEEK 12-THANKSGIVING
Three games are on tap in the NFL this Thanksgiving. Here is a preview..
- Bears at Lions-
Detroit's annual Turkey Day early game. The Lions usually play well on Thanksgiving. This year they play the surprising, first-place bears, who are 7-3 and lead the NFC North. Detroit is 3 games behind Chicago, so this is obviously a must-win game Problem is the Lions have been so unpredictable. The Bears need to win to stay ahead of Minnesota. These two teams played only 2 weeks ago with Chicago winning at Soldier Field.
- Redskins at Cowboys-
Who do the Eagles root for- first place Washington or a surging Dallas team? Neither. To me, I'd would always want to see Dallas lose. If it happens, the Cowboys would slide to 5-6 with the Saints next week. If Washington wins the Eagles can always take care of them next week at home , then at Washington in the final regular season game. Either way, the Birds next to win their next three games- which happens to be division games- against New York, the Redskins and the cowboys. If all works out, Philly can be 6-6 and tied for first place in two weeks.
As for this game, Dallas beat the Skins earlier in the year. Dallas, like Detroit, usually wins on Thanksgiving. There's a lot more at stake this season in this bitter rivalry. One key will be how Colt McCoy or the newly-signed mark Sanchez perform at QB after Alex Smith broke his leg last week. Smith is out for the year, so if the 6-3 Redskins expect to keep pace towards the playoffs, they will have to do so with second-rate quarterbacks.
The Cowboys were almost dead, if not for the birds' lapse. So I think Washington gets revenge tomorrow.
Falcons at Saints-
The Thanksgiving night game. New Orleans is 9-1 and streaking toward the Super Bowl. Atlanta has one last shot to stay afloat,a t least for a wild card berth. I expect Coach Mike Smith to be fired after the season. The Falcons have too much talent to be lingering as a 4-6 team. How many times can the Saints keep blowing out teams and scoring 50 points or more? I see the Saints winning tomorrow night in another shoot-out.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- SIXERS, EAGLES, PHILLIES
- The Sixers have won their first 9 games at home this season. They go for No. 10 tonight vs. New Orleans. Regardless, they have other issues right now. First overall draft pick, Markelle Fultz, who looks more and more like a huge bust, suddenly left the team, his agent saying he is getting his troubled right shoulder examined again on Monday.
Either its his shoulder or mental issues, Fultz is also an immature guy, pouting and taking to social media after T. J. McConnell came in to play point guard during the Sixers' win over Phoenix on Monday night. The team just couldn't lose to the lowly Suns at home, so feelings be damned, they sat Fultz while McConnell helped pull the team out of its early funk.
Is all this drama really worth it? Let's face facts- ex- General manager Bryan Colangelo made a huge mistake in drafting Eultz ( and not drafting emerging star Jayson Tatum, who is with Boston). Colangelo is gone, Fultz should be gone too. Admit the error, cut your losses and move on.
Maybe Fultz will hook up with another team and be a player in the NBA. It ain't happening in Philadelphia, where the pressure and scrutiny is enormous.
The 76ers need to focus on Jimmy Butler, trying to convince him to sign long-term after the season. They don't need the soap opera that is Fultz.
- Offensive Coordinator Mike Groh made a stupid comment about wide receiver Golden Tate, saying it's been a "challenge" to integrate Tate into the offense. It's Groh's job to make use of Tate while he is with the Eagles. Tate has been more or less invisible in his first two game with Philly. If there's ever a time to use him it's this week against the Giants in a do-or-die game.
It's becoming more apparent that the Eagles miss assistant coaches Frank Reich and John DiFillipo. They were the creative forces in the dynamic offense of last year's championship season. Head Coach Doug Pederson seems like he was less involved than what we thought.
If Groh can't do the job, clean house. That includes Defensive Coordinator Jim Schwartz. Start bringing in younger players and rework the coaching staff and come back hungry in 2019.
I haven't given up hope for this season, but even if the birds do win the NFC East title, are they really going anywhere, with the likes of the Rams and Saints around?
- All quiet on the Phillies front. Look for trades and free agent signings after December 1st, when the Winter Meetings begin.
Manny Machado is trying to walk back his lack of hustle remarks. He has to. Those stupid comments must be hurting his value on the free agent market. He's a hell of a player and would fill needs for the Phils at either third base or shortstop. But who needs the drama? If Machado fails to hustle and play hard, what will Phillie fans do? Boo a guy you've signed for 8 years at $40 million a year?
I would rather see the team sign Bryce Harper. They still have 3 spots open on their 40-man roster. This is before trades. I'll be happy with Harper, another starting pitcher ( Corbin?) and bullpen help. They can fill in the rest with deals. Franco, Santana, Herrera and Hernandez can all go.
I got my six-game pack yesterday from the Phils. My game sin 2019 include:
May 16 vs Brewers
An afternoon game in the spring against Christian Yelch and a good, young squad.
May 30 vs Cardinals-
Another afternoon game. St. Louis is always a challenge. The Phillies should still be good in the spring.
July 13 vs Nationals-
Hopefully Harper-less Washington should still be a contender in NL East. This may be Photo Night as well.
July 27 vs Braves-
NL East champs invade the Bank in mid-summer. Every game against the braves should be big next season.
August 15 vs Cubs-
Will Cole Hamels pitch this game? Should be a fun game vs contending Chicago.
September 14 vs Red Sox-
Always big games when Boston comes to town. This time it's the World Champion Red Sox in September.
Interesting as well, the Phillies are setting aside three nights for special retirement ceremonies for Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley and Ryan Howard. The Phillies' organization always does these ceremonies and presentations well. They haven't named their Wall of Fame inductee yet.Of course, they are hoping for sell-outs those 3 special games.
With an improved team and ceremonies to look forward to, the summer holds promise for Phillies fans.

NFL REVIEW- WEEK 11
A review of the past weekend in the NFL..
Seahawks over Packers-
Seattle kept it's faint playoff hopes alive while Green Bay is probably finished for the year. They won't win NFC North. They are not better than the Bears or Vikings. Will Coach McCarthy go after the season? The Seahawks travel to Carolina this week while the Pack stay on the road for a key game in Minnesota.
Saints over Eagles-
New Orleans getting 48 points wasn't as much of a surprise as the Eagles only getting 7 points. The Saints have the worst secondary in the league Philly has a must-win game at home this Sunday against their rival Giants. Can't remember the last time New York was favored in Philadelphia, even though the Birds have a slightly better record. New Orleans continues their march to the playoffs with a home game against desperate Atlanta.
Cowboys over Falcons-
Hard to believe that Dallas may win the NFC East and make the playoffs after being on life-support a few weeks ago. The Eagles gave them life and the Cowboys are at 5-5 now. They play their annual Thanksgiving Day game at home vs the Redskins. Win and the Boys share first place with Washington. meanwhile, Atlanta has a must-win game this week at New Orleans.
Lions over Panthers-
Detroit stayed alive with an upset win at home vs Carolina. The Panthers are trying to stay with red-hot New Orleans but may end up getting a wild card spot instead. Detroit plays their annual Thanksgiving Day game, this time vs Chicago, while the Panthers return home to face Seattle.
Colts over Titans-
Tennessee's up-and down season continues with a loss in Indianapolis. Andrew Luck has resurrected his career under new head coach Frank Reich. The Colts try to keep the momentum rolling this week at home vs Miami, while the Titans stay on the road with an away game vs streaking Houston.
Giants over Buccaneers-
New York won a shoot-out last week, winning their third game of the season. The 3-7 G-men play in Philly this Sunday, while Tampa Bay start a three-game home stand vs San Francisco.
Texans over Redskins-
Houston, after losing its first three games, has now won six in a row. They start a three-game home stand, starting with Tennessee this week. Washington plays at Dallas on turkey Day in a huge NFC East contest.
Steelers over Jaguars-
Pittsburgh was on the ropes in Jacksonville before they pulled out the win. The Jags, after reaching the AFC Championship Game last season, have been a major disappointment. Pittsburgh goes to cold Denver this week, while Jacksonville travels to equally chilly Buffalo.
Ravens over Bengals-
Baltimore stays alive in AFC North, while the Bengals continue to slip. Cincinnati ain't going anywhere until they fire their head coach, Marvin Lewis. The Ravens stay home this week to face Oakland while Cincy plays at home against inter-state rival Cleveland.
Cardinals over raiders-
Both teams suck and are looking at 2019 and the draft, so does it matter? Oakland flies cross-county to Baltimore as Arizona plays at the Chargers.
Broncos over Chargers-
Denver pulled the one-point upset in LA, slightly derailing the chargers' hopes for an AFC West title. Denver hosts the Steelers this week while LA hosts Arizona.
Bears over Vikings-
The Bears are for real. The Vikings have so much potential but can't seem to win the big one. Chicago plays Detroit on Thanksgiving while Minnesota plays welcome to Green Bay.
Rams over Chiefs-
The highest scoring game in the history of Monday Night Football, LA outlasted KC, 54-51. Could be a Super Bowl LIII preview? This week both the Chiefs and Rams have well-deserved byes. Are Mahomes and Goff better quarterbacks now than Carson Wentz. Right now, yes. In the long run, we will see. Glad Mahomes and Goff aren't in the NFC East.
In my NFL picks last week I went 1-0 with a tie. For the season I am 14-8 against the spread...

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- SIXERS, NFL FOOTBALL, EAGLES, BASEBALL HOT STOVE
- The Sixers are the only undefeated team at home this season in the NBA, going 9-0 with a victory over the Phoenix Suns Monday night. Joel Embiid had another huge game, scoring 33 points and gathering 18 rebounds. He continues to play like an MVP.
For the first time this season the 76ers have won 3 in a row. New guard Jimmy Butler is quickly becoming a part of the squad, both on offense and defense. Saric and Covenington, the players traded to the Timberwolves for Butler, were nice role players. But they aren't in Butler's class. The Sixers got a star for a pair of good players.
- Watching the Rams 54-51 win over the Chiefs, I'm reminded how far the Eagles are from these two elite teams. If the birds somehow win the NFC East and get into the playoffs, do you really think they would go far? In the long run, better to go 8-8 or less, get an easier schedule next year, plus get higher draft picks in which to rebuild this team.
I can easily see a LA-KC rematch in Super Bowl VIII. New Orleans, New England and Pitssburgh will have a say in who plays in February. The playoffs promise to be exciting and high-scoring, with or without the Eagles.
- The Yankees broke the ice yesterday by obtaining pitcher James Paxton from Seattle for a pair of prospects. Free agents are holding tight until the upcoming Winter Meetings.Who will blink first, Machado or Harper? Where will Patrick Corbin land? Whatever happens, the Phillies should be in the middle of the action.
- Nice meeting former Phillies scout Hank King last night at my Hot Stove discussion group. Interesting stories from a real baseball guy. They don't make them like Hank anymore. It's good to know he hates analytics as well.

IN MY LIFE- CONCERT REVIEW- TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA
*** ( out of four stars)
I didn't see the Eagles game Sunday afternoon, which is a good thing. I was having fun in Wilkes-Barre at the Trans-Siberia Orchestra concert.
I never saw TSO before, but knew of them from their techno- Christmas music and their elaborate light show.
Mohegan Sun Arena is a nice place, small, like the Spectrum was and intimate. Half of the venue was used, and even then not all seats were filled. Still, for a Sunday matinee show, it was lively, especially with families and kids.
The theme was "Ghosts of Christmas Eve" and the first hour -plus of the show was a truly visual and audio spectacular. TSO are excellent musicians, mostly guitar-orientated, electronic music. Blended with familiar Christmas carols and songs ( like "What Child Is This?"), and original TSO Christmas tunes, the story played out, even with an impressive, Morgan Freeman-like narrator.
Fire is used extensively thru-out the show, with laser beams and lights all across the arena in multiple colors. Musicians and singers hover over the crowd on movable platforms. Sometimes one wonders if they are really playing live or is some of the show pre-recorded? Regardless, the lights are perfectly in sync with the music.
It's obvious that TSO spares no expense in their tours. Yet they always donate $1 per ticket sold to a local charity. They also do two shows at a time ( as they did in Wilkes-Barre) which makes for a long day for the performers.
There is a TSO-East and West, so two different bands can hit as many cities as possible during the holiday season. In fact, as TSO-East played in Wilkes-Barre, TSO-West did a concert in Colorado Springs.
The second half of the show was a "greatest hits" theme, again with elaborate lasers and lights. All in all, the entire show ran a little under three hours...with another show to go 90 minutes later. I liked the first half better. Plus some of the music in the second half- teaming with the shooting wisps of fire, made me feel like it was some sort of crazy devil- worshipping.
Trans-Siberian Orchestra will be playing two more shows in the area near Christmas, doing the Wells Fargo Center, Philadelphia, Pa, on Friday, December 21st. Definitely worth checking out to get into the Christmas spirit!

CHIRPING BIRDS- EAGLES VS SAINTS REVIEW
- The Eagles were destroyed yesterday in New Orleans, 48-7. Not unexpected, as Philly is in chaos and the Saints are the hottest team in football. Historically, it was the worse loss ever by a defending Super Bowl champ.
- Hard to believe this team won a Super Bowl last season but that's the point: this is not the same team as last year. Injuries, lack of depth, and lack of motivation are killing this club.
The friggin' Dallas Cowboys are most likely to take the NFC East and make the playoffs. There's a reason why no team has won the NFC East in consecutive season since 2003. The Cowboys have a relatively easy schedule ( whereas the Eagles have the toughest schedule in the league). Since they acquired wide receiver Amari Cooper, their offense has clicked. Zeke Elliot now has room to run, since opposing secondaries cannot stack eight players in the box. Plus Washington lost its QB, Alex Smith, to a gruesome broken leg.
With the Birds slipping, Dallas has a shot. Hate to see owner Jerry Jones gloating as their season was saved last week at the Linc when they upset the Eagles.
Dallas hosts the Redskins on Thanksgiving in a huge division game. Who to root for? It's always good to have Dallas lose, but Washington is on top of the division.
- With Smith out for the season, Colt McCoy is the only experienced QB on the Redskin offense. would the Eagles entertain trading Nick Foles to Washington? That would mean conceding the division, but the Birds would get a pretty high draft pick in exchange. Isn't that why we kept Foles? Not only as insurance for Carson Wentz, but also to flip him to another team last in the season?
Doesn't GM Howie Rossman at least have to make an investigation call? They probably regret not dealing Foles this off-season ( reportedly the Eagles had deal to send Foles elsewhere for a No.1 draft pick last spring.I'm sure Washington will be searching and making calls too. They are in 1st place- why give up on the year just because your No. 1 quarterback is out?
- I knew the whipping was coming in New Orleans , but still shocking to see. It's one thing to lose big; it's another thing to give up and be humiliated. In fact, the Saints never really took their foot off the gas. They wanted to score 50 points again. They wanted to badly beat the defending world champions, especially since they mouthed-off that New Orleans couldv'e beaten the Birds kast year too. We will never know, as the Saints lost to the Vikings on a fluke play late.
They poured it on the Eagles, going for a fourth down play late, QB Drew Brees picking on the depleted secondary, plus kicking a meaningless field goal late. What goes around comes around, and hopefully the Eagles remember.
As I have said all along, one of the keys to the season is motivation. The Eagles don;t seem to have the hunger it takes to win, the same hunger they had last season. No wonder it's tough to win consecutive Super Bowls.
- If there is a bright spot, missing the playoffs wouldn't be a bad thing. Missing the post-season may humble the entire organization, after 11 months of celebrating, writing books and appearing on talk shoe. No longer will there by a bull's-eye on their backs. They would get an easier schedule, playing other weak conference teams. Missing the playoffs would also mean overall higher draft picks next spring ( the Eagles have a ton of picks).
It's pretty obvious the team needs an overhaul and an injection of youth. Old guys like Wallace, Ngata and Sproles either went down to injury or didn't play well. Peters may be done. Unlike last season, with Chris Long, these veteran pick-ups just didn't work out.
It will be up to Rossman and assistant Joe Douglas to selct and sign the best players coming out of college and free agency to keep the Eagles a float in the coming years. They have their franchise quarterback. Now they need to rebuild both lines, get Wentz more weapons on offense and devise new strategories going into 2019.
- Why was Wentz still in the game late during a 41 point deficet? Was Coach Pederson sending a message?
Speaking of Pederson, he bristles at questions about losing fellow coaches Reuch and DiPhillipo to other squads. That's part of success in football. You win and assistants suddenly get recognized and get head jobs elsewhere. It's Rossman and Pederson's job to try and replace those departed. Obviously these newcomers, such as Defensive Coordinator Jim Schwartz, isn't good enough. Defensively,. the club isn't forcing turnovers. They are not stopping third or fourth down tries. They give up too many soft yards, too many first downs, they don't get off the field timely to give the sleeping offense a fair shot, and they seem disinterested. Plus you have guys who shouldn't even be on an NFL team playing the secondary.
- WR Golden Tate has not made much of a difference in the offense. They gave up a 3rd round pick for Tate. Hopefully we see more of Tate before the season ends. Otherwise it may be a very short tenure in Philly.
- The Eagles have to be second-guessing themselves for not dealing Nick Foles last off-season after his amazing playoff run last season. I suppose they didn't have enough trust in Nate Sudfeld in case Wentz did get hurt.
The Saints have to be the heavy favorite to be the NFC represenattive in Super Bowl LIII. They already beat the Rams, and with home field advantage thru-out the playoffs, the road to the Super bowl will go thru New Orleans this year. Who is going to bea tthem?
- So, what now? The Eagles come home, where they have lost three straight games, to play the suddenly-surging New York Giants ( who are only a game behind Philadelphia in NFC East. When was the last time a Giants team was favored in Philly.A Giants team with a record worse than the Eagles. Yet they are still favored. That line tells you a lot about where the current Eagles are.
Three consecutive division games await- Giants this Sunday, Redskins on Monday Night Football in two weeks, and then a trip to Dallas. Even at 4-6 , it's sick to say but the Birds still have a shot, if they can win the rest of their division games. Lose to the lowly New Yorkers and you can stick a fork in 'em. 8-8 may win the sad NFC East. The Eagles need to go 4-2 over the last six games to just break even on the season.
If the team showed some fight, some life I would buy into it, but this team is different, with numerous holes to fill. Some players may have already packed it in for 2018. Sunday's game vs the G-men will say a lot about what this team is made of.

THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY- NOVEMBER 19
Meadowlands Miracle
On this day in 1978, quarterback Joe Pisarcik and the Giants needed only to run the clock out by putting a knee to the ground to secure a 17-12 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles with 20 seconds left. Instead the Giants tried a handoff that was that was fumbled on the exchange and Eagle Herman Edwards scooped up the ball and galloped 26 yards for a touchdown in the most embarrasing loss in Giants' history.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- SIXERS, FLYERS, EAGLES, PHILLIES,COLLEGE BBALL
- The Sixers won in charlotte last night, but the real story was newly-acquired guard Jimmy buter, who made a ley block near the end of the game and shot a game-winning buzzer-beating three-pointer. Butler has already made a difference. Covington and Saric, two players traded for Butler, were nice role guys but Butler is a star. He can effect a game both offensively and defensively. The Sixers should be fun to watch this season and beyond.
- The Flyers almost completed one of the greatest comebacks in NHL history. Down by 4 goals in the final 3rd period, the Orange and black scored 4 goals in less than 6 minutes, sending the game into overtime. Sadly, Tampa Bay scored in OT, picking up the victory. The Flyers earn a hard-fought point, but a win may have turned their season around. Still, it was an exciting, tense game, and the Flyers did go toe-to-toe with one of the best hocley clubs in the league.
- It's game day and the Eagles ar ein New Orleans to take on the hot 8-1 Saints. The Birds are 7 1/2 point underdogs and are racked with injuries. They are on the road, at one of the toughest places to play in the NFL, their depleted secondary ready to be carved-up by Drew Brees, one of the greatest QBs of all-time.
And even though I pick the Saints to win, 33-24, I wouldn't be shocked to see an upset. Philly has a lot of pride. They are still Super bowl champs. They know a victory can get them back into the NFC playoff race. Causing turnovers and controling the ball will be key to an Eagles victory.
- I was at an event in Downingtown with ex- Phillies relief pitcher Brad Lidge, and former WIP Sports Radio host Anthony Gargano. Lidge flew in from his home in Denver to give a little talk and answer questions. Gargano boldly announced that "the Harper thing will happen" meaning that free agent outfielder Bryce Harper will eventually sign with the Phillies.
- Reigning NCAA champion Villanova lost their second game of the young college basketball season to...Furman. Furman? Looks like the Wildcats aren't anywhere near what they were. Their Big Five streak may be in dire jeopardy this season. My St. Joe Hawks, now 3-1 in the season, may bring back the Holy War drama to the rivalry. Charlie Brown looks like an all-City player, and Taylor Funk appears to be a star in the making as well. They play on December 8th.

IN MY LIFE- BIRTHDAY MEMORIES
Yesterday, November 16, was my birthday. 62. I was born on a Friday and yesterday was a Friday. It was the first time I remember snow on the ground on my birthday. Funny, I recall birthday when it was really cold- like yesterday- yet others that were mild, bordering on Indian Summer. Always about a week before Thanksgiving, the weather can be unpredictable around my birthday.
Maybe my favorite birthday was in 2003 when I turned 47. I attended my first Eagles game on my birthday. November 16, 2003, and the birds were playing the hated New York Giants at home. A perfect storm. Plus it was close to 70 degrees that afternoon, a really nice late Autumn afternoon. The Eagles won, 28-10. First time ever attending an Eagles game, first time at new Lincoln Financial Field.
My Mom always allowed us to pick anything we wanted for dinner on our birthdays. I always had spaghetti, the long kind, with meatballs or chicken and salad. My favorite meal.I can't think of a birthday when I didn't have spaghetti, as a kid and beyond.
I was named for the saints on the Catholic calender. That was Mom's idea.Only one problem: November 16 was St. Gertrude's feast day. Since i turned out to be a guy, she took the saint on November 17- St. Gregory the Great. Hence my name. One day later and I may have been a Gertrude.
To me, birthday songs have always been pretty limited to the standard "Happy Birthday To You." I was surprised when my personal assistant played a birthday play list on request. Here are my favorite birthday songs:
1. Birthday- The Beatles
2. Happy Birthday To Ya- Stevie Wonder
3. Birthday- Katie Perry
4. Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen- Neil Sedaka
6. Happy, Happy Birthday Baby- Ronnie Milsap.
Like a good Christmas song a songwriter could be set for life writing a really good birthday song, which may be playing daily, as well as annually, to celebrate.
My birthday when I turned 60 two years ago was special, as my girlfriend Holly pulled a surprise party ( I never had one before). We had 19 guests- a nice mix of family and friends- sharing a great birthday dinner at La Traviota restaurant in Phoenixville. Really hard to keep it a surprise and it almost worked until a family member accidentally spilled the beans the day before. Still, I acted surprised, as a party is as much for the people who attend and who worked hard to plan and set up the event as it is for the honoree.
My Mom always had my birthdays special. Even in a nursing home at the end she never forgot my birthday. Even though she is gone I think of her lovingly with every birthday that passes, and for birthdays to come.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- SIXERS, EAGLES, PHILLIES
- The Sixers are now 8-0 at home, the only undefeated team at home in the NBA. They have won 18 straight home games going back to last season. jimmy butler scored 28 points in his home debut.
The 76ers stand at 10-7 on the early season. They play in Charlotte tonight.
- The Eagles prepare for their Sunday afternoon game in New Orleans. They remain 7 1/2 point underdogs. They relished in that role last year. Hard to remember the last time they were underdogs so bad as 7 1/2 points. The Eagles can win. They are Super bowl champs. They can pull the upset just as well as the cowboys did last Sunday night in Philly.
The only problem is the Birds' secondary sucks. Saints' QB Drew Brees has thrown only one interception this season. He should carve up the Eagles.
The only way the Eagles can win is to have a consistent pass rush on Brees. The offense needs to control the clock. Brees can't hurt you if he doesn't have the ball. Forcing turnovers, something Philadelphia has failed to do this year, will be key.
As world champions the Eagles must have some pride. True, this sin't the same team. They miss players like beau Allen, LaGarrette Blount and Patrick Robinson, guys who knew their roles and played well. For whatever reason, salary cap reasons, injuries, etc.. the team parted ways with players they now miss.
With a victory the Eagles would jump back to .500 at 5-5, and set them up for two straight division home games vs the Giants and Redskins.
- Phillies owner John Middletion recently commended that the organization will spend big in free agency, to the point where it may "be stupid." As long as the Phils sign Bryce Harper and another lesser free agent- maybe lefty Patrick Corbin-I'll be happy. They do need to save a few bucks in case Mike Trout becomes available via trade next off-season.
Trading a Franco and/or Santana would improve the club. Solidifying the poor defense is key. Adding bullpen depth is needed.
The Phillies recently let go of their pitching coach promoted Chris Young , assisted pitching coach, to head pitching coach. Turns out he is big into analytics. Obviously he is a Matt Klentak- guy. The organization is slowly inching closer to full-blown analytics . Hopefully common sense also prevails next summer.

THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY- NOVEMBER 17/18
The Heidi Game
On November 17, 1968, the Heidi game was played between the Oakland Raiders and the New York Jets. With New York ahead 32-29 with 1:05 to play in the 4th quarter, NBC-TV broke off from the game to broadcast the movie Heidi. Oakland would score twice in the final 42 seconds to win 43-32 as fans and viewers were outraged by missing the conclusion.

NFL PREVIEW- WEEK 11
Previewing the upcoming NFL weekend..
Packers at Seahawks-
Tonight's match-up on Thursday Night football.. Both are hanging by a slim thread for playoff contention. Seattle is tough at home and should win. Nice QB battle between Rodgers and Wilson.
Eagles at Saints-
See my preview elsewhere in blog. An upset even the Birds at 5-5 for the year and gives them hope. A loss drops them to 4-6. New Orleans can go 9-1 as the Saints vie for a bye and home field advantage in the playoffs.
Cowboys at Falcons-
Dallas stays on the road, hoping to avoid a letdown after their upset in Philadelphia. The Falcons are the most puzzling team in the league. They badly need a home victory to stay in contention in NFC South.
Panthers at Lions-
Carolina has a 10 day rest after a Thursday night loss in Pittsburgh. Detroit plays at home before playing on Thanksgiving Day.
Titans at Colts-
Tennessee is thinking playoffs after their big win over New England last week. Indy has played better and QB Andrew Luck is second in the league in TD passes.
Buccaneers at Giants-
New York is coming off a win in San Francisco while Tampa is in flux, especially over their QB situation.
Texans at Redskins-
Houston has won six in a row, while the Skins are on top of NFC East by two games. I like the Redskins plus 3 points at home.
Steelers at Jaguars-
Jacksonville has been a huge disappointment this season, while Pittsburgh looks to further take control of their grip on AFC North.
Bengals at Ravens-
One of these teams will barely be alive in their division. Both are disappointing after fast starts. Baltimore should win at home.
Raiders at Cardinals-
Meaningless game out west. Oakland, with another loss, can solidify their hold on the overall No. 1 pick in the spring draft.
Broncos at Chargers-
Up-and-coming Chargers take on division rival Denver in LA. The Chargers should continue their march to the playoffs.
Vikings at Bears-
We knew Minnesota should be competing in NFC North, but who knew Da Bears would look so good as well? Sunday Night Football at chilly Soldier Field should be fun.
Chiefs at Rams-
The game was moved back to LA after the field in Mexico City was deemed unacceptable for football. Classic Monday night duel of Goff vs Mahomes. I like the visiting chiefs covering 3 1/2 points.
My NFL Picks this week ( Last week, 0-2; Season 13-8)
- Redskins plus 3
- Chiefs plus 3 1/2 points

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- SIXERS, FLYERS, EAGLES
- As predicted, it may take a little bit before newly acquired Sixer guard Jimmy Butler gets acclimated with the team. Butler scored 14 point sin his 76er debut last night in Orlando, but only took two shots in the 4th quarter, and scoring zero points down the stretch. Philly blew a 16-point lead ( no surprise) and the Magic came back to win.
What's wrong with Ben Simmons? He hasn't played well for a few weeks. now, is he pouting as a result of the Butler deal? Without role players on the team like last season, when the team had guys like IILesova and Bellinelli. Will the three elite guys- Embiid, Simmons and Butler- be able to co-exist?
These up-and-down Sixers are fine with me. As long as they start to jell come playoff time. I bet the Sixers to win less than 53 1/2 games this season. They need a 16-game winning streak at the end of the year to reach 53 wins last season. A few extra losses along the way, but still reaching the post-season, is perfect.
- The flyers play a weak New Jersey Devils team tonight. Despite a loss to Florida on Tuesday the Orange and Black have played decent hockey lately. Let's hope it continues tonight and on Saturday afternoon at homeagainst the Lightning.
- New Eagle Golden Tate and new Sixer Jimmy Butler are a lot alike. Both were under-used in their debut games with both clubs. Hopefully we see more of Tate this weekend at New Orleans. Unless they sigh Tate to a long-term contract they only have him for eight games Was giving up a 3rd round draft pick worth it? Give the Eagles credit for being aggressive and trying to repeat.Plus they can get that pick back as a compensatory selection if Tate does walk.

CHIRPING BIRDS- EAGLES VS SAINTS- THE PICK
Who would've ever though the Eagles would lose to Dallas last Sunday night? Philly had everything in its favor: home field advantage ( they had lost their previous two home games); rest after a bye week, whereas the cowboys were playing off a short week, having playing on Monday night; a must-win for both teams, a game that would keep the Birds close to Washington in NFC East, a game which would all but bury Dallas in the standings. The Eagles just got new wide receiver golden Tate, which added to their offensive arsenal, whereas the Cowboys were struggling to score points and find weapons.
One of the reasons for the disappointing Dallas victory was turnovers. In nine games the Eagles' defense has only forced six turnovers. The offense also got off to another slow start. Despite the frenzied crowd the defense seemed deaf to the fan's cheers ( and boos) and couldn't stop Dallas on three key drives in the second half.
So the Eagles dropped to 4-5, two games behind the Redskins. Forget a wild card spot, especially after such a frustrating loss, the only way to reach the playoffs and defend your Super Bowl title is via the division. Even with the Dallas defeat Philadelphia still can win the division . But it becomes must harder now, where every game is like a playoff game.
Playing New Orleans in the Superdome is never easy. The red-hot Saints would love nothing more than to knock off the Super Bowl champs. They are 8-1 and not only focusing on winning NFC South, but also gearing for a playoff bye and home field advantage. Drew Brees, already the all-time leading quarterback in passing yards, is having an MVP-type season with only one interception. With all of the injuries in the Eagle secondary, it could get ugly on Sunday.
Within a week the Birds go from 7 1/2 point favorites over Dallas to 7 point underdogs vs New Orleans. Philly has had trouble scoring points, especially early in games, but I can see this game being a shoot-out. The Eagles certainly have the weapons to stay with the Saints. Can the defense stop Brees and company?
If the Cowboys could come into Lincoln Financial Field last week, overwhelming underdogs, hang in there early and pull off the upset when the Eagles' defense couldn't stop the surging Cowboys, why can't the defending champs do the same thing? Why can't we send a message to the league that we aren't dead yet?
The Birds could get massacred in New Orleans, but I'm thinking they keep it close somehow. Make it Saints 33 Eagles 24

IN THE NEWS- CHEERLEADERS WITH DISABILITIES ENJOY RECOGNITION, CAMARADERIE
The following is from The Columbus Dispatch...
Under the Friday night lights of the football stadium t Independence High School, Lauren Flynn rallied her pep squad.
Just minutes into the game against the Marion-Franklin Red Devils, the Independence 76ers had marched into the opposing team's territory, and the crowd needed a little coaxing to come alive.
"All right, ya'll, let's hear an I-H-S!" Flynn shouted at the group of six cheerleaders assembled on the track near the50yard line.
After Flynn led a count-off of "5,6,7,8," the students-pompoms in hand- chanted "I-H-S! Hey, we're the best!"
Decked out in 76ers colors and sporting other signs of their school loyalty, the Sparklers- cheerleaders with physical and mental disabilities, including some who use wheelchairs and walkers- perform during the first quarter of every home football game for Independence, a Columbus high school.
Never failing to exude school spirit, the Sparklers- overseen by Flynn and Sam Wyatt, another Independence special education teacher- are a fan favorite.
"They always just get a huge ovation from the crowd, and it seems like everyone is watching them," said Nicole Chavers, a special education teacher at the high school and founder of the squad. "They love every single minute of it."
Chavers formed the Sparklers in 2012 after watching a segment on NBC Nightly News about the Sparkle Effect, a national organization with the mission of involving students with developmental disabilities in sports and other school activities.
"I thought it was wonderful," she said.
The Sparklers originated with five members in the fall of 2013. The current squad has seven members- senior Rebecca Breedlove, 18; senior Dalaney Banks, 18; junior Diamond Jackson, 17; junior Tamara Perry, 19; sophomore Niani Moon, 15; freshman Priscilla Jenkins, 15; and senior De'Ontay Sanders, 20- whose disabilities range from orthopedic impairments to cerebral palsy.
Although the Sparklers aren't accredited through the national organization- some of the guidelines, such as a requirement that activities be offered throughout the academic year, aren't feasible for the school- its mission mirrors that of the Sparkle Effect. It is also the only such group within Columbus City Schools, district spokeswoman Jacqueline Bryant said.
"These types of team efforts are examples of how we meet our students' needs and interests while advancing our commitment to provide engaging and rewarding opportunities for all students,' Bryant said in an email.
Chavers coached the group until two years ago, when she stepped down to spend more time with her family.
Flynn and Wyatt said the visibility of the Sparklers boosts members' sense of belonging and their self-esteem.
"They love the recognition,' Wyatt said. "They feel a part of the team. They feel they're just as much a part of the school as everyone else."
Added Flynn: "It's great for them to have something that's theirs only. They have a lot of ownership of that."
The Sparklers perform at pep rallies and football games, often joined for some chants by the varsity cheerleading squad- the Liberty Belles.
The coaches are exploring the possibility of introducing the Sparklers to other sports, including basketball.
The group's members say they enjoy the camaraderie and the adrenaline rush of being in front of the crowd during games.
"I like to cheer with my friends, my beautiful friends," Jackson said. "It's fun."
Jenkins said she enjoys pumping up the crowd.
"I get them very excited," said Jenkins, who is often joined at games by her 4-year-old sister.
At the most recent home game- a 14-12 loss for the 76ers- Jenkins wore a hand-sewn uniform made by her mom, who stood by the fence near the Sparklers with other parents eager to support the cheerleaders.
"I'm happy seeing her thriving,' Jenkins' mother said. 'It gives them an opportunity to do something they love to do that is sometimes unobtainable."

IN THE NEWS- FBI RECORDS SPIKE IN DISABILITY-RELATED HATE CRIMES
This disturbing story from Disability Scoop..
As hate crimes across the U.S. surge, new data indicates that incidents targeting people with disabilities are up sharply too.
There were 128 hate crime offenses reported during 2017 stemming from bias against those with disabilities, according to the FBI. That's up from 76 the previous year.
The numbers released this week come from the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Program, which tallies data submitted by law enforcement agencies across the country on incidents motivated by disability as well as race, ethnicity, ancestry, religion, sexual orientation, gender and gender identity.
Overall, federal officials said there were 7,175 hate crime incidents in 2017, up some 17 percent from 6, 121 the year before.
The report indicates that 1.6 percent of all incidents in 2017 targeted people with disabilities. Those with mental disabilities were affected by 93 of the offenses and 35 targeted people with physical issues.
The uptick in hate crimes prompted by disability bias follows two years of declines in that category.
The FBI noted that the increase in hate crimes coincided with a large jump in the number of law enforcement agencies contributing data to the report. More than 16,000 agencies submitted data for 2017, nearly 900 more than the year prior.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- SIXERS, FLYERS, EAGLES
- Jimmy Butler was introduced to the city yesterday afternoon. Butler is the three-time All-Star guard acquired by the Sixers from the Timberwolves recently. Butler not only brings a terrific long-range shooter, relentless defender and overall leader, Butler isn't afraid to speak his mind and say something to his teammates.
Hopefully he puts the bug in the ear of Ben Simmons and Markelle Fultz to shoot more and play harder. His press conference was refreshingly honest. He wants to win, plays hard and wants those around him to play hard too.
The Jimmy Butler era begins tonight in Orlando. Butler's first home game is Friday against the Jazz.
- The Flyers lost at home last night, defeated by Florida 2-1. Florida won their fifth game in a row. The Flyers continue their home stand with an afternoon contest on Saturday vs Tampa Bay.
- Eagles Defensive Coordinator Jim Schwartz spoke on Tuesday and it was the same old excuses and frustration. Yes, the Birds have multiple injuries and their lack of depth is apparent. But they miss a boatload of tackles and seem unmotivated at times.
The Eagles have the toughest schedule to end the season in the NFL. An upset in New Orleans would change everything, bringing their record back to .500 at 5-5, and set them up for a pair of division. games at home ( Giants and Redskins). Lose and it's 4-6 and on life support.
Philly is a 7 1/2 point underdog. I can't remember the last time the Eagles were that big of an underdog. Still, with the Saints at home and playing so well, their eye on a playoff bye and home field advantage, I can't see the Birds winning on Sunday.

"Stoneface"
On this day in 1993, Head Coach Don Shula of the Miami Dolphins won his 325th NFL game, surpassing George Halas of the Chicago Bears as the winningest coach in professional football history, as Miami defeated the Philadelphia Eagles at Veterans Stadium (Miami 19, Philadelphia 14). It was Shula's 31st season as a coach. He retired with 347 victories in 1995.

NFL REVIEW- WEEK 10
A look back- and ahead- at the NFL..
Steelers over Panthers-
The Steels are back and in control of AFC North again, after a shaky start. Carolina is still a playoff team, chasing hot New Orleans. Pittsburgh travels to Jacksonville this weekend, while the Panthers stay on the road with a trip to Detroit.
Bears over Lions-
Chicago looks for real as they destroyed inconsistent Detroit. The Lions host Carolina this week while the Bears host Minnesota in a huge divisional game.
Cowboys over Eagles-
See my review on Monday. The Birds slip to 4-5 with a date in New Orleans this Sunday afternoon. If Dallas could upset the Eagles, with everything in Philadelphia's favor, why can't the Eagles do the same thing against the Saints? Dallas goes to Atlanta to play the desperate Falcons.
Saints over Bengals-
Once again the Bengals had a chance to show they are a legit playoff team and they failed, getting crushed by the Saints. Cincinnati won't go anywhere with Marvin Lewis as coach. New Orleans , after beating the Rams, is shooting for the top seed in the NFC.
Browns over Falcons-
Cleveland is improved and finally won a home game. Atlanta remains up and down. They need to beat the Cowboys this week to even have a wild card shot. Cleveland is on their bye.
Titans over Patriots-
Tennessee has beaten good teams so far this season as they try to stay with sizzling Houston in AFC South. New England will win AFC East again, but will they earn the coveted home field advantage? Without it they will struggle to make it back to the Super bowl again.Tennessee goes to Indianapolis this week while New England has their bye.
Colts over Jaguars-
Neither Indy or Jacksonville are going anywhere. The Jags are the bigger disappointment after making it to the AFC Championship Game The Colts ply their second of three consecutive home games this week against the Titans, while the Jags host Pittsburgh.
Chiefs over Cardinals-
No surprise as Kansas City continues to cruise. KC plays the LA Rams on Monday Night Football in Mexico City in a battle of one-loss teams ( Super Bowl preview?). Arizona has a chance for a win this week as they play awful Oakland in the desert.
Bills over Jets-
No shock that Buffalo beat the Jets but it was a surprise how the bills demolished New York with Matt Barkley as quarterback. Todd Bowles, Jets head coach, needs to be fired. Buffalo and New York both have byes this week.
Redskins over Buccaneers-
Washington goes 6-3 and remains on top of NFC East while Tampa Bay plays out the string. The Skins host Houston while the Bucs hit the road against the Giants.
Chargers over Raiders-
Oakland continues a terrible year under coach Gruden while the chargers hang with the Chiefs in AFC West. The Raiders play at Arizona this week while LA hosts Denver.
Packers over Dolphins-
Green Bay won't win their division but they hope for a wild card spot, while Miami, after a promising start, fail. The Pack hit the road for two games in a make-or-break stretch. Aaron Rodgers takes on Seattle. Miami is on a bye.
Rams over Seahawks-
Seattle gave it a great shot in LA but the Rams were too much as they cruise through NFC West. This week LA plays Kansas City on Monday Night Football in Mexico City. Seattle welcomes Green Bay on Sunday.
Giants over 49ers-
Eli Manning tosses three touchdown passes as the giants won their second game of the season. San Francisco is now 2-8. New York hosts Tampa Bay while SF takes a bye.
I lost both of my picks last week, dropping to 13-8 against the spread.

ODD Couple 1973: King and Riggs
When Oscar loses everything, including Felix and their apartment betting with tennis legend Bobby Riggs, Felix has a plan to win it all back.
Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King appeared together on an episode of The Odd Couple ( titled "The Pig Who Came to Dinner") spoofing their rivalry less than two months after their Astrodome :Battle of the Sexes" tennis match. Riggs played himself- a male chauvinist hustler- and Billie Jean King, to the surprise of Felix and Oscar, would show up as his ping-pong opponent.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- SIXERS, PHILLIES, EAGLES
- The Sixers traded for All-Star guard Jimmy butler over the weekend. He makes his Sixer debut tomorrow night at home. Butler will bring intensity, shooting and defense to 76ers team that sorely needed all of the above.
Joel Embiid is having an All-Pro, MVP type of season so far. True, the club will miss Robery Covenington's 3-pointers and sticky defense. They will also miss Dario Saric's hustle nad work ethic. But they had to make this movie in order to go deeper int the playoffs. Thus the real value of the deal won't be known until the spring.
Most of all, the organization got a really good player and didn't have to surrender with a No. 1 draft pick.
Markelle Fultz is again having problems shooting, even free throws. He is only 54% from the foul line which is a disgrace for anyone, let alone a guard. His poor shooting is going to keep him out of close games at the end. For the overall top pick of a draft that is unacceptable.
Pretty soon the Sixers will need to come to grips that Fultz was a huge mistake being drafted as the no. pick overall. That blunder will always haunt the Sixers as long as Jayson Tatum continues to play great for the Celtics. You have to play Fultz, a she can't ride the bench. That does no good for anybody. Playing and shopping Fultz at the same time is better than not seeing him at all. He doesn't even look like a good role player or scorer coming off the bench.
- Phillies manager Gabe Kapler lost his home in the midst of all the terrible California wildfires recently. Luckily he and his family are safe.
Rumors persist that the team is "shopping like hell" Mr. Base on Balls, Carlos Santana. Hopefully they find a sucker to take his big contract ( even though the Phils will probably eat much of his deal just to get rid of him). It was a glaring mistake to sign him in the first place. Santana can't play first base- Hoskins needs to move back to first. Santana can't play third base ( a goal is to improve the defense). . He walks too much and strikes out a ton.
Shipping Santana out of town would be a good first step before spring training starts. Franco, Herrera and Hernandez can follow Santana out the door.
- I still can't believe the Eagles lost on Sunday night to a really mediocre Dallas team. With their secondary problems and injuries, facing a red-hot Dree Brees and New Orleans Saints team on Sunday, it could get ugly. the Birds are 7 1/2 point underdogs, but why do I get the feeling it should be more?

Alsn Alda portrays journalist George Plimpton and Vince Lombardi plays himself in a loose adaption of the curious writer's foray into the legendary coach's world of professional football.
The film offers the over-matched layman's tragicomic perspective from inside the huddle of the 1968 Detroit Lions, but doesn't quite cover the spread and match Plimpton's poignant self-deprecating "confessions of a last string quarterback."
That same year Plimpton published The Bogey Man, an account of his three-month stint on the PGA Tour.
