On January 17, 1988, Denver bronco defensive back Jeremiah Castille striped and recovered Earnest Byner's fumble at the three-yard line, ending Cleveland's game-tying drive and Super Bowl chances. Byner rushed for 67 yards on 15 carries and caught seven passes for 120 yards, adding two touchdowns in the contest.
