PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- SIXERS, EAGLES, NFL NEWS

* The Sixers destroyed the Pistons last night at the Wells Fargo Center. The 6'ers have won three games against Detroit so far this season. The team flies to London, England this week, playing the Celtics on Thursday night, 3:00 our time.

* The Eagles have home field advantage, and hopefully the fans come out next Saturday night in a frenzied mood. They also have the weather advantage, as their competitors in the NFC playoffs- expect for Carolina- all play in domes or warm weather. So, the cold the better for the Birds.

Only, the forecast is for weather possibly in the balmy 50s next weekend. It's the start of a January thaw, which will feel great after our recent icy spell.

The 50s will be great for the fans attending the game, but for the players, who may love not playing in bone-chilling weather, it is actually not an advantage to have such  mild conditions.

Right now, the forecast is for "dreary" weather. Does that mean a cold rain?

* Jon Gruden  signed with the Oakland Raiders as their new head coach, inking a $100 million- ten-year contract. Gruden will be fun to watch again on the sidelines. Oakland isn't that far away form contention. Will be interesting to see if he lasts the entire life of the contract. That's too much for any coach- $10 million a year- but more power to Gruden.

* Also, there is turmoil in New England over the recent  disagreement between Tom Brady, the coach and owner. Good for the Patriots. They have home field advantage again in the AFC playoffs. Perfect formula for New England to ge tot the Super Bowl in snowy, cold Foxboro.  But maybe the Steelers or even the Jaguars will have a shot against the Pats in the upcoming weeks with not the total focus on football. Plus, there may be a January thaw in New England as well, which may negate the home field advantage.

* Tonight starts the wild-card weekend in the NFL. Tennessee at Kansas City and Atlanta at Los Angeles

. I like the Chiefs big-time. The Rams have a good team, but they are young and inexperienced. The Falcons don't score touchdowns, and may not be able to hang with the explosive Rams, but I see the defending NFC champs possibly upsetting LA. Matt Ryan knows how to win. Atlanta is going from a dome to a warm-weather game. And the playoff spotlight may be too big for the Rams.

* I'm off to watch the Flyers take on the St. Louis Blues this afternoon. One time we flock into a chilly hockey arena to get warm.
