PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- SIXERS, PHILLIES

As expected, the Sixers rolled last night in New York City, beating the Knicks by 15 ( Philly was up by 26 points at one point). The 76ers ease into the All-Star break at 37-21, while the Knickerbockers lost their 18th game in a row.

The problem with the Sixers is that they can beat the teams they should beat, such as the hapless Knicks, but they continue to lose to really good teams, like the Celtics, Bucks and Raptors. Anything less than an appearance in the East Finals will be disappointing.

Someone...anyone..needs to teach Ben Simmons how to shoot free throws. he was 8-14 again last night, after going 2-7 on Monday night. Simmons is a point guard, who, in crunch time, should have the ball in his hands most of the time. But how can Simmons handle the ball  at the end of the game when he knows he is going to get fouled? Shouldn't Simmons be improving his free throw shootings by now? His is too critical of a position to ignore this key element to the game.

- The Phillies opened camp and a few story lines emerged almost immediately

^ During the initial press conference of the spring, Manager Gabe Kapler urged communication with his players- but apparently not with himself. He was asked about addressing the sexual assault case that has been haunting him for a few weeks. The case was back when Kapler was with the Dodgers and pertained to an alleged sexual assault cover-up.

By refusing to talk about it and moving on, the subject will be brought up again. The Philadelphia media won't let it die. One would think by now that Kapler would know the local media. That's why it was so surprising to hear Kapler's rigid stand. If Kapler had no part in the cover-up, why not say that and hope the incident goes away?

- The Phillies extended Aaron Nola, signing him to a four-year, $40.7  million contract, with a club option fifth year. Great deal for all- Nola, the Phils and the fans.

- Franco and Kingery looks like they will be battling for third base. Franco is trimmed down while Kingery is more bulked-up. Plans change if Manny Machado is signed and decides to play third.  or the club signs another free agent, like Mike Moustakis.

Full squad work-outs begin on Sunday but there as plenty regulars in camp now, working out.

- One unexpected  bit of news was that pitcher Jake Arrieta had knee surgery recently, nothing serious, basically cleaning out the knee. He is expected to be ready for Opening Day.
