On this Day...
On February 14, 1911, a cork-centered ball was introduced, and the impact was immediate. While just eight players in the American League hit .300 or better in 1910, the number jumped to 27 in 1911. The league ERA leapt nearly a run per game, from a parsimonious 2.53 to 3.34.
