- As we wait for Machado/Harper ( now known as Macharper) to make up their minds, there is a rumor that the Phillies are deeply involved in trade discussions with the Miami Marlins for All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto.
Realmuto is already a terrific player. Get him out of the spacious stadium where Miami plays and he may blossom like christian Yelich did once he got to Milwaukee. If a catcher is the quarterback in baseball, Realmuto is one of the best. He is only 27 and will be a free agent in two years.
Harper has mentioned wanting to play with Realmuto since they hit it off at the All-Star game. Trading for Realmuto may bring an extra bonus- Harper.
One glitch is that Miami is demanding the Phillies best pitchimg prospect- Sixto Sanchez- as part of the return package. Sanchez is only 20-years-old. He throws 100 MPH, though he has been injured on and off.
I would hate to give up Sixto, especially to a team in the division. He could come back to haunt the Phils for years.
So, the organization has a big decision to make soon- even before Machado or Harper come to town
- Those proposed rule changes in baseball are still being discussed. The DH and the three-batter minimum may be adopted. I'm old-school and would rather they not mess with the Grand Old Game at all. The one proposal I hate is putting a runner on second base to start an extra inning. It's a gimmicky move and it cheapens the game. What you will get it teams sacrificing the runner to third, and a fly ball winning the game- all without a hit
- The Reading Fightin' Phils named Kirsten Karbach as their new play-by-play broadcaster. She worked for another Phillies minor league club, Clearwater, as their play-by-play announcer for five years. She remains baseball's only female play-by-play broadcaster.
- Now that the Sixers have even more stars, it's up to Coach Brett Brown to make it work. It may take time for the chemistry to gel. by the playoffs, if the 76ers don't make a deep run, Brown needs to go.
- Looks like it may be against the rules for the Eagles try franchise Nick Foles with the intent to trade him. Surely they won't keep him as a back-up for $25 million. They may need to allow Foles to walk as a free agent and be happy with the compensatory 3rd round draft pick next year.
- The Flyers go for 9 in a row tonight when they host the L.A. Kings. Rookie sensation Carter Hart won't be in goal, as Anthony Stolarz gets the start. Last time he played Stolarz shut-out the Rangers in Madison Square garden.
