IN MY LIFE- RAIN...A TRIBUTE TO THE BEATLES.. REVIEW
I saw" Rain ..A Tribute to The Beatles" again last night in Lancaster, Pa. It was the second time I've seen Rain, and it was another great show.
The beautiful American Music Theater was nearly full on a weeknight, the audience consisting of mostly middle-age to older fans, with a sprinkling of kids 18 and under in the crowd.
The great thing about The Beatles' music is that it is universal. It's generational. Anyone and everyone loves Beatles' music. That's the beauty of Rain. Not only do they look and sound like the Fab Four, they will always have interest and support for their shows, as long as people love The Beatles.
This tour features the very last album, Abbey Road, on it's 50th anniversary. It's not my favorite Beatle album, but it is sentimental because it was their last musical effort together.
For starters, Rain came out as The Early Beatles, the mop-tops of 1963-64. Songs like "All My Loving," "Please Please Me," and "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" seemed fresh and were translated faithfully by Rain.
The light show and video were fun. The costumes were authentic. The musicians of Rain are fine musicians, as all of the music is live. Other than the four members they was a keyboardist on stage.
Back to the show: the Help! and Rubber Soul albums were briefly touched on. Some surprises were included along with the hits, songs like "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "You're Gonna Lose That Girl." A rollicking version of "Twist and Shout" had the crowd on it's feet, dancing and clapping along.
After about a 20-minute intermission ( in between segments, as Rain changed costumes, old-time, 60's TV commercials were played on the video screen, as well as news pieces of 60s events such as Vietnam and Flower Power), Rain did a Later Beatles segment, focusing on Abbey Road.
The encore was an inspiring "Hey Jude", led by the Paul look-a-like ( who, by the way, plays bass left-handed, like McCartney, but plays the acoustic guitar right-handed).
The overall show lasted a little over two hours. Seeing Rain again was fun, plus a great reminder how special The Beatles were, and still are. As Paul shouted near the end of the concert, "Long Live The Beatles!"
