- The Flyers lost a really big game to Pittsburgh last night at the Wells Fargo Center, 4-1. A bad call by the referee, an early whistle that nullified a goal which would've changed the game.
Goes to show there are bad officials in all sports.Fans just need to vent but then let go. It's only a game.
Rookie goalie Carter Hart was just OK in goal.
What is it about the Penguins? Are they that good? Yes, when they face the Flyers at least. Plus they have Sidney Crosby, Give the devil his due, Crosby is a pain in the ass but he is a great player, a real difference maker.
Time to regroup tonight in Minnesota.
- Bryce Harper news as of the last writing here:
* The latest odds are Harper to the San Francisco Giants and Manny Machado to the Yankees. The Phillies have the money to sign one or both. After Owner John Middleton's "stupid money" comment both the Mets and Nationals have actually out-spent the Phils do far in free agency.
Whether you agree or not, they did have a shot to sign pitchers J.A.Happ and Patrick Corbin. They choose to pass on both.
Does Harper really want to play in Philadelphia? Is Phillies management aggressive enough in pursuing Harper? With two 26-year-old superstars, only now entering their prime, to choose from ( how often does that happen? Another reason to go hard after one or the other), did they not focus on one or the other enough?
How will Phillies brass spin it to the fans if they fail to land either? They will makes excuses like "We tried," or "We still had a great off-season," or "They really didn't want to play in Philly." The bottom line will be the Phillies, despite having the most money and flexibility, blew it. They didn't get the job done.
They really have improved, with Realmuto, Robertson, Segura and McCuthen. Harper and Machado would be the cherry on top of the sundae, the superstar fans who come out to see, the player who can get the club over the playoff hump, the guy who may influence future free agents to come here.
Speaking of which, if the Phillies fail, to get Harper or Machado, will the fans have faith in management to do everything in their power to sign Mike Trout in two years?
Will the fans boo Harper in August when he comes to town with San Francisco if he snubs the Phils? Or is it the Phillies' fault, which in turn may be reflected in attendance at the ballpark this summer?
Harper/Machado hopefully will sign soon, as spring training starts tomorrow. This is getting old. With over 100 free agents still on the market, something needs to be done to break the logjam so other signings and trades can occur. The Phillies can help in this process by living up to their "spending stupid money" statement and making Harper or Machado an offer they can't refuse.
Mr. Middleton, step up to the plate and don't allow the Giants to steal Harper. Til then it's all talk, no action Phillies.
- Another big game for the 76ers tonight, as they host their rival Boston Celtics. Both are fighting over the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference, and home court advantage in the playoffs. The Sixers come in to the contest relatively healthy while the Celts will be playing without guard Kyrie Irving. They are 2-0 since making a flurry of deals last week just before the trade deadline.
The Sixers need to go at least 18-8 the rest of the way to finish with a better record than last season when they finished with 53 wins, winning their final 16 games in a row.
