PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, FLYERS

- Is it good that Phillies' owner John Middleton flew back to Clearwater last night without Bryce Harper on board or a deal in hand? What's taking so long? What does Harper want that the Phils aren't offering?

Maybe Middleton just went to Las Vegas on Friday to touch base with Harper and his wife, a get-to-know-you meeting. Still, I would've thought a deal was done, especially since Middleton went out to Vegas alone, checkbook in hand.

I expect Harper to announce a decision by Wednesday. Spring training camps are open and games are being played. Harper needs to get into a camp soon to get ready for the upcoming season.

Do the Phillies have any competition now for Harper? The Giants won't offer a long-term deal as Harper wants. The Padres already signed Manny Machado and wouldn't seem to afford Harper too. The Yankees and Dodgers are supposedly out of the running. The White Sox can't afford him. The Nationals reportedly have moved on from Harper, but they are still "leaving the door open a crack" and will get final refusal once Harper makes up his friggin' mind.

Will it all be worthwhile once Harper finally signs? I hope so. Seeing Harper bash homers at Citizens Bank Park and leading the Phils into the playoffs for the next ten years or so will make the fans forget how frustrating this entire process has been.

- Thrilling Flyers victory last night at the soggy Linc, Big game in standings, as Flyers move to within seven points of Pittsburgh. Great show put on by NHL and Keith Urban. Gritty was again the star. Despite the weather conditions it was a memorable night for Flyer fans.

The colorful uniforms were cool. The spectacle was awesome, with the fireworks and all the pageantry. Only the sometimes driving rain spoiled a fun Saturday night in South Philly.

With the trade deadline looming the question is: will Wayne Simmons be traded? Will the Flyers break up their core, looking at the future rather than focusing on this shaky season?
