PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, EAGLES, SIXERS, FLYERS

- Bryce Harper, go to hell. A decision needs to be made. Reports are Harper is talking to San Francisco about a long-term contract. Phillies owner John Middleton spent last weekend in Las Vegas wooing Harper. The Dodgers sent their manager and front office executives to meet with Harper again on  Sunday. Now it's the Giants.

The Phillies have been played and their fans have been used and abused. yes, the Phils tried and seemingly offered a huge contract over $300 million. But they balked at a three-year opt-out that Harper and his agent, Scott Boras, seemingly have insisted on. Phillies management may have screwed up the deal, not closing when they had the chance and allowing other teams, like the Giants and Dodgers, get re involved. They will second-guess themselves by not being more aggressive with Manny Machado.  With both Moustakis and Arenado signing, third base is Maikel Franco's, win or lose.

Why would Harper want to play in San Francisco? Bad team, poor hitter-friendly park, not as much money. I can see glitzy Los Angeles, who at least have a championship-ready club. But the stinkin' Giants?

Harper never really wanted to play in Philly. Maybe he is afraid of the tough fans. Maybe he doesn't like analytic Gabe Kapler. Maybe he prefers to play on the West Coast near his Vegas home. He has visited Philadelphia enough with the Nationals to get an idea what the city is like.

There are no winners in the sad Harper saga. The Phillies are losers, failing to sign Harper or Machado despite having the most "stupid" money to spend. Harper comes off like a greedy diva. Boras is evil. Harper's wife, who reportedly fought with Harper to stay on the West Coast,  seems to be clueless and ditzy. The fans will be angry and frustrated and will boo the hell out of Harper when he visits in the summer.

Meanwhile, life goes on. What will the outfield look like? Herrera ( who is hurt), Quinn ( who is hurt), McCuthen, Williams, Altherr or Cozens? Will the front office turn it's attention to bolstering the pitching? Would Craig Kimbrel in the back end of a deep bullpen look good?

What do the Phillies do with all of that "stupid" money they didn't spend? I'm all in on landing the really big fish in two years. Mike Trout, please come home!

- Goodbye to St. Nick Foles. The Eagles will allow him to become a free agent on March 13. Thanks for everything, Nick! Good luck in..Jacksonville?

- The Sixers have never beaten Oklahoma City. They are 0-19 all time against the Thunder. They play in OKC tonight. What are the chances, without Joel Embiid, that the 76ers break that losing streak tonight?

- The Flyers play Columbus tonight, hoping to keep the momentum going , making a playoff push even if the odds are slim.

- March is a great time to be a sports fan. Spring training is well underway. The NFL free agent period is about to begin. Both the NBA and NHL are heading into the home stretch of their seasons. And college basketball March Madness will be in full swing soon. Who can ask for more?

IN MY LIFE- RAIN...A TRIBUTE TO THE BEATLES.. REVIEW

I saw" Rain ..A Tribute to The Beatles" again last night in Lancaster, Pa. It was the second time I've seen Rain, and it was another great show.

The beautiful American Music Theater was nearly full on a weeknight, the audience consisting of mostly middle-age to older fans, with a sprinkling of kids 18 and under in the crowd.

The great thing about The Beatles' music is that it is universal. It's generational. Anyone and everyone loves Beatles' music. That's the beauty of Rain. Not only do they look and sound like the Fab Four, they will always have interest and support for their shows, as long as people love The Beatles.

This tour features the very last album, Abbey Road, on it's 50th anniversary. It's not my favorite Beatle  album, but it is sentimental because it was their last musical effort together.

For starters, Rain came out as The Early Beatles, the mop-tops of 1963-64. Songs like "All My Loving," "Please Please Me," and "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" seemed fresh and were translated faithfully by Rain.

The light show and video were fun. The costumes were authentic. The musicians of Rain are fine musicians, as all of the music is live. Other than the four members they was a keyboardist on stage.

Back to the show: the Help! and Rubber Soul albums were briefly touched on. Some surprises were included along with the hits, songs like "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "You're Gonna Lose That Girl." A rollicking version of "Twist and Shout" had the crowd on it's feet, dancing and clapping along.

After about a 20-minute intermission ( in between segments, as Rain changed costumes, old-time, 60's TV commercials were played on the video screen, as well as news pieces of 60s  events such as Vietnam and Flower Power), Rain did a Later Beatles segment, focusing on Abbey Road.

The encore was an inspiring "Hey Jude", led by the Paul look-a-like ( who, by the way, plays bass left-handed, like McCartney, but plays the acoustic guitar right-handed).

The overall show lasted  a little over two hours. Seeing Rain again was fun, plus a great reminder how special The Beatles were, and still are. As Paul shouted near the end of the concert, "Long Live The Beatles!"

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES

- The Bryce Harper saga drags on. Spring training is a week old, the games have begun, yet Harper has yet to make a decision. Manny Machado signed with San Diego last week yet Harper remains at his home in Las Vegas.  There were reports that Harper and his evil agent, Scott Boras, wanted an opt-out in his contract after three years. They want an opt-out yet the Phillies would have no such opt-out. If Harper is playing well he could walk after the 2021 season, still only 29 years old, and seek an even larger payday with his dream team, the Dodgers.

If so, I would sign Harper, give him the opt-out and not worry. If Harper leaves, even if the Phillies are contenders by 2021 ( why would he leave if the Phils are contenders? Greed..so he can be a free agent again at age 29), the Phillies can sign Mike Trout in two years. Even if Harper walks, he still plays with Trout for a season.

Other than the opt-out issue, there are also reports that Harper's wife wants to stay on the West Coast. Apparently there is an internal conflict, as Boras wants Harper to take the most money (from the Phillies) while the wife wants Harper to sign with the Dodgers or Giants.

Harper needs to be a man and do whatever he feels is best. It needs to be soon. Harper needs, wherever he goes, to get into camp, get into shape if he isn't already, and get his timing down for the upcoming start of the 2019 baseball season.

- Roman Quinn is hurt again, with what has been described as a "mild oblique strain." When Quinn plays he is exciting, speedy, a good hitter and excellent defender. He would make a great lead-off hitter and a center fielder who covers tons of ground. But he seems to always be hurt. He is on the shelf again, hopefully not for long. If Harper is signed one or two outfielders have to go, either by demotion to the minor leagues or by trade. Despite his enormous potential, Quinn may be on the outside looking in, mainly because Quinn can't stay on the field.

OSCAR NIGHT- A REVIEW

My thoughts on Oscar night..

- The Oscars without a host was like a ship without a captain. The show didn't quite come in under three hours as hoped, but it moved along at a brisk pace.

- I was happy that Rami Malek won Best Actor  for playing Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. I was surprised that neither Glenn Close or Lady Gaga won for Best Actress. It was a night of "consolation" as Gaga got her Oscar, but not for acting. She won for Best Song "Shallow", which was co-written by Gaga. Spike Lee didn't win for best Director but he did get an Oscar for Best Adaptive Screenplay.  Then he reportedly bitched about "Green Book" winning for Best Film.

- I was also happy that Black Panther didn't win the big award for Best Picture.

- I was surprised that A Star Is Born was pretty much shut-out. In any other year, Bradley Cooper would've won Best Actor. Malek's portrayal of Mercury was so strong it wasn't going to happen with Cooper.

- My girlfriend loved the colorful, ever-changing Oscar stage and background. I felt it was annoying. Also annoying were the minor categories like Best Make-up were on the sir, but especially the winners who wouldn't leave the stage.

- I didn't miss the stupid bits done by hosts/comedians like Ellen Degeneris or Jimmy Kimmel.. I missed the opening monologue by a really funny comic like Steve Martin or Billy Crystal.

- I saw some of the Red Carpet and thought Amy Adams and Brie Larson were the hottest actresses.  I didn't see that many gowns that knocked me out.

- Already they are plugging the Martin Scorsase new film due for the fall, The Irishman, starring Robert DiNero, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci. It would be nice to see more old time movie stars back at the Oscars again. I missed guys like Nicholson, Hoffman and Hanks. I didn't miss Meryl Streep at all. Barbra Steisand started to lecture her political views, and Spike Lee bumbled through his notes as he attempted to criticize Trump.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, FLYERS, SIXERS

-Overnight it was reported that the Dodgers are back in the Bryce Harper mix, as Dodger manager Dave Roberts and other Los Angeles front office personnel were spotted in Las Vegas on Sunday. The Dodgers are reportedly trying to convince Harper to take a short-term, lucrative deal, as opposed to the 10-year deal offered by the Phillies.

If L.A. is back in it, they are in it for a reason. They have to be considered the favorite to land Harper. Bryce is a West Coast guy, The Dodgers, after being in the World Series the last two seasons, are closer to a championship. Los Angeles is a hell of a lot closer to his hometown Las Vegas than Philly.  Magic Johnson is trying to screw us again.

It would be a huge let-down if Harper goes elsewhere at this point. Especially after Phillies' owner John Middleton flew to Vegas to spend the weekend with Harper. When Middleton returned to Clearwater with Harper or a deal, you knew that was a bad sign.

Hopefully Harper will want the long-term, 10-year deal reportedly offered by the Phillies, as opposed to the shorter- term, lucrative deal being pitched by Los Angeles.  If Harper accepts the Dodger deal, after all the hype and stringing the Phils along for months, he will become public enemy no. 1 in Philly. He will be booed unmercifully in July when the Dodgers visit Citizens Bank Park for a four-game series.

I don't know if overpaying Harper would effect him now. If he is enamored with the Dodgers, is there anything the Phillies can do? No Harper would mean the club may turn its attention to free agent pitching. The Phillies are better with all of their off-season acquisitions. But losing Harper now would be a huge disappointment and make Philadelphia feel second-class once again.

After flying to Vegas over the weekend, and especially remarking about "spending stupid money" will Middleton up his offer even more? Will he face scorn if Harper does not sign with the Phillies?

- Still savoring the great Saturday night outdoor game between the Flyers and Penguins. The pomp and pageantry was awesome, from Gritty's entrance into Lincoln Financial Field to Keith Urban's performance between the first and second periods.

Philly has a way of doing special events the right way, from the NFL Draft a few years ago to Saturday night's hockey game.

- When Joel Embiid came up with a bum knee, the Sixers team suffered. They lost Saturday afternoon to Portland at home . Tonight they play in New Orleans vs the Pelicans. Each loss before the playoffs is a plus for me, as i have a bet that the 76ers will not win more than 53 wins during the regular season.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, FLYERS

- Is it good that Phillies' owner John Middleton flew back to Clearwater last night without Bryce Harper on board or a deal in hand? What's taking so long? What does Harper want that the Phils aren't offering?

Maybe Middleton just went to Las Vegas on Friday to touch base with Harper and his wife, a get-to-know-you meeting. Still, I would've thought a deal was done, especially since Middleton went out to Vegas alone, checkbook in hand.

I expect Harper to announce a decision by Wednesday. Spring training camps are open and games are being played. Harper needs to get into a camp soon to get ready for the upcoming season.

Do the Phillies have any competition now for Harper? The Giants won't offer a long-term deal as Harper wants. The Padres already signed Manny Machado and wouldn't seem to afford Harper too. The Yankees and Dodgers are supposedly out of the running. The White Sox can't afford him. The Nationals reportedly have moved on from Harper, but they are still "leaving the door open a crack" and will get final refusal once Harper makes up his friggin' mind.

Will it all be worthwhile once Harper finally signs? I hope so. Seeing Harper bash homers at Citizens Bank Park and leading the Phils into the playoffs for the next ten years or so will make the fans forget how frustrating this entire process has been.

- Thrilling Flyers victory last night at the soggy Linc, Big game in standings, as Flyers move to within seven points of Pittsburgh. Great show put on by NHL and Keith Urban. Gritty was again the star. Despite the weather conditions it was a memorable night for Flyer fans.

The colorful uniforms were cool. The spectacle was awesome, with the fireworks and all the pageantry. Only the sometimes driving rain spoiled a fun Saturday night in South Philly.

With the trade deadline looming the question is: will Wayne Simmons be traded? Will the Flyers break up their core, looking at the future rather than focusing on this shaky season?

OHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, FLYERS, SIXERS

- Phillies owner John Middleton is out in Las Vegas meeting with free agent Bryce Harper and his evil agent, Scott Boras. Middleton supposedly left GM Matt Klentak and Team President Andy MacPhail in Florida. Boras has been known to go mano-to-mano with owners before. Middleton took his private plane to Vegas, hopefully to bring Harper back to Clearwater on Monday.

It will probably take at least $330 million to sign Harper for 10 years. I agree that no one is worth that crazy money. If Harper gets $350 or more, what will Mike Trout be worth in two years? Sadly, that is what the market is. Some team, if not the Phils, will pay the money. Maybe the Phillies will get a good seven years out of Harper. Hopefully there is an opt-out clause later in the contract.

Yes, the fans will ultimately have to pay for his bloated contract. But do we want good players who will give us a better shot to win, or mediocre guys like in the past ( such as Jerome Williams and Peter Bourjous). I'm excited if the Phillies do ink Harper soon. Not only will it be cool to see Citizens Bank Park full again, it will be nice to have meaningful baseball games in September. Fans from other cities can't come into our stadium and take over. Phillies' fans travel well, and this season they will be out in droves all across baseball.

I hope they seal the deal within a few days. Meanwhile the team has started Grapefruit League play, beating the Rays on Friday afternoon, 3-2. The Phils take on the Pirates today in Clearwater.

- Brian Elliot will be in goal tonight for the Flyers at the Linc when they take on the Penguins outdoors. The forecast is for a rainy, windy evening, bad for the players and fans. I would've liked to see rookie Carter Hart play, but the organization announced this morning that hart is out about ten days with a "lower body injury."  Too bad it's not gonna snow, which would've looked better plus actually been much safer for the players.

- The Sixers play at home this afternoon, hosting the visiting Portland Trail Blazers, They will again be without injured center Joel Embiid.  Hopefully the 76ers can tread water until Embiid gets back in a week or two.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- SIXERS, EAGLES, PHILLIES

- Joel Embiid is out for at least a week with a sore left knee. Did he hurt it at the recent All-Star Game? Coach Brett Brown claims it is tendentious, and resting "aggravates" the condition. Guess what? Embiid gets to rest and will miss at least the next three games. That's good news for me, since I have a bet out there that the Sixers will not win more than 53 games this season.Losing the next three games without Embiid will help that cause and may refresh the center for the upcoming playoffs. Win-win situation.

- Interesting off-season for the Eagles. Not only is the Nick Foles situation still unfolding ( will they franchise him or not? Trade him or not? Let him walk as a free agent?), but now we have the news of two former Pittsburgh Steeler stars on the market- running back Lavion Bell and wide receiver Antonio Brown. I want both. But if I have to pick one I would take Bell. The Birds need to get real regarding a serious running back. Not only can Bell run the ball, he is one of the best pass catching backs in the league.

Of course, Brown would give the Eagles the downfield , speedy threat they have lacked. With the possibility of Nelson Agholor being dealt soon, the wide receiver position is open. Carson Wentz needs targets. Brown would fit the bill nicely, plus bring an attitude to the club. Both Bell and Brown are winners.

- The Bryce Harper watch continues. Now, with Manny Machado signed and sealed to San Diego, the Harper situation is getting ridiculous. Harper and his weaselly agent, Scott Boras, are coming off as greedy and selfish.  I want Harper and feel he would put the Phillies over the top. He would sell tickets, fill the ballpark and make the Phils instant contenders. I suppose the money will be forgotten in the excitement of his announcement that he will play for Philadelphia, but right now, as the team gets ready to open Grapefruit League play on Friday against Tampa Bay, Harper and Boras represent everything that is wrong in sports. Even $ 300 million isn't enough?

I just hope it ends soon. I'm tired of all the rumors. It was fun for a while, but now that Machado broke the ice with his big contract form the Padres, I just want Harper and the rest of the free agents out there on the market to sign so the 2019 season can begin.

Interesting take on Machado: he will play in San Diego three years at tops then get traded to a team like the Yankees. The Padres, despite having the best farm system in the majors, won't win in three years, will want to dump Machado's massive contract, and New York will be right there to pick it up. Machado will finally get to play for his childhood dream team and still be in his prime. San Diego will get a boatload of Yankee prospects in return and everyone will be happy.

- I really want Mike Trout and hopefully the Phillies will do everything in their power to sign him in two years, Harper or not. One would think trout would love to play in Philly. He is a local kid, and a major Philadelphia sports fan. But would the pressure be too much? Trout would be The face of the franchise. Does Trout even get out of Anaheim without an extension before 2020?

That's why I want the Phils to sign Harper now. He is a 26-year-old superstar just entering his prime. He is out there now whereas we are not sure that Trout will ever be a free agent. If he is, then the organization should still have the payroll flexibility to get Trout as well. Imagine the outfield with Harper and Trout together?  But until that ever becomes reality I say get Harper and wait on Trout. As if Trout needed even more incentive to come home to Philly.

The Yanks Are Coming

77 years ago, United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt gave a "green light" to Kenesaw Mountain Landis, assuring the commissioner of Major League Baseball that it would be best for the morale of Americans at home that the upcoming season's ball games be played despite the overseas battles of the second World War.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, EAGLES, FLYERS

- The Phillies lost their leverage in free agency yesterday when Manny Machado, the former Baltimore third baseman, signed a $300 million, 10-year deal with San Diego. Reportedly, Machado was the Phillies main target this off-season. The organization had one final chance to beat the Padres' offer but declined, preferring to walk away instead.

Now the pressure is on Phillies management to sign Bryce Harper or else face the wrath of their fan base. After months of building up hopes, they choke?

Obviously the Phillies misread the free agent market. They thought their offer to Machado was the highest. They probably thought they may get him for cheap, certainly not $300 million.  Now they need to over-spend to get Harper.

How often does a 26-year-old young superstar hit the open market? Plug Harper in right field for the next ten years. Watch him hit 50 homers a season in Citizens Bank Park. Enjoy numerous championship seasons in the meantime.

If they fail to sign Harper, do you really have faith that the Phillies will do everything in their power to sign the great Mike Trout in two years? it would seem a natural fit since Trout is a local kid, an Eagles season ticket holder, and lifelong Phillies fan.

But will the Phillies talk a good game then fail to deliver at crunch time? Will Trout still want to play locally, where the glory and pressure to perform will increase, or will he be satisfied to stay out of the limelight in Anaheim?

Let's not forget that now at least three teams- the Mets, Nationals and Padres- have spent more money than the rich Phillies this off-season. Owner John Middleton talked about "spending stupid money" yet he allows a second-rate organization like San Diego beat him to a young superstar?

This is all good news for Maikel Franco, who will now compete with Scott Kingery for the third base job. With the Machado and Mike Moustakis signings, Franco has yet another shot at winning over the hot corner. He's only 26, and with a solid year, could  become the future again.

Can't blame Machado for taking the big money. The Padres have one of the best farm systems in baseball yet they probably aren't ready to win yet. Still, the weather is perfect in San Diego. Other than the Dodgers, the National League West should be fairly competitive. Machado is now the man out there, really not in the spotlight of a major market such as New York or Los Angeles.  He has to be happy.

It will be interesting to see how Machado performs at spacious Petco Park in San Diego. Camden yards in Baltimore was a hitter's park. Will Machado continue his streak of hitting 30 or more home runs in four consecutive seasons?

The bottom line is that the Phils have painted themselves in a corner. They need to pony-up the cash now or else face a tremendous backlash from fans and media. We have been looking forward to this off-season for a long time. Management has been hoarded money for years. They have talked about kicking the can down the road, but this year- because of statements from ownership- was the time to stop the rebuild and win. Right now, with the additions of Realmuto, McCuthen, Robertson and Segura, the Phillies are good but are they good enough?

Passing on Manny Machado would make sense only if the Phillies do end up signing Bryce Harper when the dust settles.

- The Eagles hiked up tickets again for the third straight season. They are good, remain wildly popular and can do it. Tickets are outrageous anyway, so is it a surprise? Parking is the real issue ate Eagle games. Paying $50 for parking is ridiculous.

Great games on tap this fall, with clubs like the Patriots, Lions, Seahawks, Bears, Cowboys, Giants, Redskins and Jets visiting South Philly.

- The Flyers were out-classed at home last night, losing to Tampa Bay, 5-2. Rookie goalie Carter Hart was pulled in the first period after letting up three straight goals. Clearly the Lightening are perhaps the best team in the NHL.The Orange and Black had put themselves back in playoff contention. But last night showed just how far they have to go to be Stanley Cup winners.

The hockey trade deadline is next week. Will the Flyers deal guys like Wayne Simmonds ( who can be a free agent after the season?), with an eye on the future, or do they feel they have a legitimate shot this year?

IN THE NEWS- BULLYING DIFFERS BASED ON TYPE OF DISABILITY, STUDY FINDS

From Disability Scoop..

New research suggests that incidents of bullying and other harassment  targeting kids with disabilities vary depending on what sort of special needs a child has.

A study looking at the experiences of 791 young people ages 10 to 20 across the country found that those with learning disabilities were more likely to experience in-person harassment while those with physical disabilities were more often victimized online.

Youth with depression experienced both online and in-person harassment, the study found.

The findings published recently in the journal Children & Schools are based on data collected through a telephone survey known as the Technology Harassment Victimization study.

"The type of disability, diagnosis or special service among youths may be associated with unique vulnerabilities in terms of peer harassment experiences,' researchers from the University of New Hampshire wrote in their findings.

Those behind the study said that educators should factor the differences in how youth with disabilities experience harassment.

"We hope these findings help schools consider the context in which these events occur and possible ways to minimize risk to all youths, including those with disabilities or those receiving special services in schools,' the researchers wrote.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, FLYERS

It was a weekend of chaos on social media regarding Bryce Harper and the Phillies. "Things are heating up.." "Is today the day?" Just some of the rumors and headlines causing excitement and clicks. One item mentioned that the Phillies ordered all of their employees- from ticket sales to Public Relations- to work today (a scheduled day off for President's Day). Why?

Writers shot this notion down of Harper signing with the team today.Everyone wants to be someone, the one to break the news.

I'm sick and tired of all the speculation. Who do you believe? I'll see it when I believe it. I can only imagine the excitement when Harper does sign. Tickets will be sold, Harper jerseys will fly off the rack.

In a way, despite the frustration, all of this Harper/Machado talk does keep the Phillies alive, even as spring training  is just underway.  The first Grapefruit game is Friday against Tampa Bay. The initial game in Clearwater at Bright House Field is Saturday vs the Pirates.

- The Flyers stay red-hot, blowing a four-goal lead on Saturday afternoon but winning in overtime, then defeating the Red Wings again last night in Detroit, 3-1. The Orange and Black are still six points out of the final wild card slot. Rookie Carter Hart won the back-to-back games over Detroit.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- FLYERS, PHILLIES

- After coughing up a 5-1 lead in the 3rd period, the hot Flyers won 6-5 in overtime Saturday afternoon, defeating the Detroit Red Wings. A win is a win and the Flyers earned two more points toward their playoff chase. They remain six points in back of the final wild card spot.

It seems like the Orange and Black are going uphill in their comeback battle. As usual, the flyers get in a hole early then h\ave to fight like crazy at the end of the season. They have rookie goalie Carter Hart now, exuding confidence and stability between the pipes.

Speaking of goaltender, the Flyers made a deal late Friday night, sending goalie Anthony Stolarz to Edmonton for veteran net minder cam Talbot. Talbot will give the flyers security behind Hart. (It looks like fellow goalies Elliot and Nurwurth are history).

- Full-squad workouts begin today in Clearwater for the Phillies. Safe to say the roster that will go north for the team for Opening Day is not at spring training yet. Will Bryce Harper or Manny Machado come north? What about a starting pitcher or even another reliever? I don't think the club is done yet.

Everyone feels if either Harper or Machado is signed soon, the Phils would have a surplus of outfields and infielders and would need to make a deal. But why?

Let's say Harper signs, as hoped. The starting outfield would look like Harper in right, Herrera in center and McCuthen in left. Quinn, Williams and Altherr could be the extra outfielders, a nice blend of speed, power and defense. I think Quinn would play a lot, as would Williams, although Williams has shown he can hit off the bench.

If Machado signs he will play third base while Jean Segura plays shortstop. What happens to Scott Kingery and Mychal Franco?

Why not use Franco off the bench, spelling Rhys Hoskins at first base and Machado at third/ Franco and Altherr would provide right-handed power off the bench. Why not use Kingery as the super utility guy, playing just about all the infield positions? Kingery should finally take over second base, his natural position, next season when Cesar Hernandrz departs.

I'm sure the Phils will add utility players to round out the roster and will seek to trade a Franco or Altherr for pitching. If not the Phillies would have a hell of a bench with the guys they have now.

I still think the Indians would make an ideal trading partner before the spring is over. Cleveland has an abundance of starting pitching,  while the Phillies may have too many outfielders, which the Indians desperately need.

PHILLIES PHODDER

- It's ok for Phillies' GM Matt Klentak to gloat about having an "excellent" off-season so far. And he has- signing Andrew McCuthen and David Robertson, trading for J.T. Realmuto and Jean Segura, and now signing ace pitcher Aaron Nola to a team-friendly long-term contract.  As long as he doesn't forget that many Phillies fans will be extremely disappointed if he fails to land either Bryce Harper or Manny Machado soon.  They are the big prizes which will instantly make the Phils contenders, sell tons of tickets and give the fans the hope they have missed for so many down seasons.

Sounds like the ball may be in the Harper camp now. I'm sure the Phillies have made a competitive offer, maybe not their best offer yet. They aren't going to bid against themselves, and it sounds like no team is willing to give Harper what he is truly looking for.  As Klentak said yesterday "It takes two to tango..."

I'm sure the Phillies can and will up their offer to Harper, but only if they have to.

After Machado visited the Phillies last year the focus has not been on Manny. It's almost like he is the consolation prize. Machado would make the Phillies much better, improving both their offense and defense. But his impact on the team- both on and off the field- would not be as great as if they sign Harper, both on and off the field.  So Machado has become secondary in this whole process. I'm sure if Harper signs elsewhere the Phillies will turn their attention back to Machado before they are shut-out altogether.

Rumors and daily reports, from pretty reliable writers, have only clouded the issues. Who do you believe anymore? USA Today reporter Bob Nightengale, who for months as written that the Phillies are favorties to sign Harper, yet only recently claimed they would have to "grossly out-bid" San Francisco to land the outfielder.

Better just to wait and see. This can go on until St. Patrick's Day..March 17. Meanwhile other free agent signings and potential trades are being held up. For instance, if the Phillies sign Harper they will have too many outfielders and may want to make trades for pitching ( Cleveland needs outfield help and have an abundance of starting pitching).By the same token, if Machado comes to Philadelphia, what happens at third base? Do the Phillies keep Franco or deal him?

Can't force Harper or Machado to sign anywhere. Meanwhile they are holding baseball hostage. There needs to be a signing period, just like there is a trading period.

IN THE NEWS- BARBIE TO ROLL OUT DOLLS WITH DISABILITIES

From Disability Scoop..

Barvie dolls are available with various  skin tones, body types, eye colors and hair styles. Now,  for the first time, the toy store staple will feature dolls with disabilities.

Toymaker Mattel said it will introduce a Barbie doll that uses a wheelchair and another with a prosthetic leg.

'Fot 60 years, Barbie has been a reflection of culture and fashion and that is key to the brand's continued relevance," said Kim Culmone, Mattel's global head of design for Barbie. "This year our Barbie line will include dolls reflecting physical disabilities in order to better represent the people and the world kids see around Our commitment to diversity and inclusion  is a critical component of our design process and we are proud that today's kids will know a different image and experience of the brand."

The wheelchair was one of the most requested features from consumers, Mattel said.

The company worked with experts at UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital and elsewhere to design a wheelchair modeled after those used by individuals with permanent physical disabilities. What's more, 12-year-old Jordan Reeves who has a prosthetic arm helped designers understand why Barvie's prosthetic leg needed to be removable to make for a more realistic experience.

The new offerings are part of Barbie's Fashionistas line. The collection was expanded in 2016 to include dolls with four different body types- original, tall, curvy and petite- as well as seven skin tones, 22 eye colors and 24 hairstyles.

In addition to disabilities, Mattel said the latest incarnation of Fashionistas will include a new body type and braided hair texture.

The dolls with disabilities will be available this fall.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- SIXERS, PHILLIES

As expected, the Sixers rolled last night in New York City, beating the Knicks by 15 ( Philly was up by 26 points at one point). The 76ers ease into the All-Star break at 37-21, while the Knickerbockers lost their 18th game in a row.

The problem with the Sixers is that they can beat the teams they should beat, such as the hapless Knicks, but they continue to lose to really good teams, like the Celtics, Bucks and Raptors. Anything less than an appearance in the East Finals will be disappointing.

Someone...anyone..needs to teach Ben Simmons how to shoot free throws. he was 8-14 again last night, after going 2-7 on Monday night. Simmons is a point guard, who, in crunch time, should have the ball in his hands most of the time. But how can Simmons handle the ball  at the end of the game when he knows he is going to get fouled? Shouldn't Simmons be improving his free throw shootings by now? His is too critical of a position to ignore this key element to the game.

- The Phillies opened camp and a few story lines emerged almost immediately

^ During the initial press conference of the spring, Manager Gabe Kapler urged communication with his players- but apparently not with himself. He was asked about addressing the sexual assault case that has been haunting him for a few weeks. The case was back when Kapler was with the Dodgers and pertained to an alleged sexual assault cover-up.

By refusing to talk about it and moving on, the subject will be brought up again. The Philadelphia media won't let it die. One would think by now that Kapler would know the local media. That's why it was so surprising to hear Kapler's rigid stand. If Kapler had no part in the cover-up, why not say that and hope the incident goes away?

- The Phillies extended Aaron Nola, signing him to a four-year, $40.7  million contract, with a club option fifth year. Great deal for all- Nola, the Phils and the fans.

- Franco and Kingery looks like they will be battling for third base. Franco is trimmed down while Kingery is more bulked-up. Plans change if Manny Machado is signed and decides to play third.  or the club signs another free agent, like Mike Moustakis.

Full squad work-outs begin on Sunday but there as plenty regulars in camp now, working out.

- One unexpected  bit of news was that pitcher Jake Arrieta had knee surgery recently, nothing serious, basically cleaning out the knee. He is expected to be ready for Opening Day.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- SIXERS, PHILLIES, FLYERS

- Tough  home loss for Sixers last night against rival Boston. The Celtics, playing without Kyrie Irving, fought hard for a 111-108 victory. Reactions:

* Coach Brett Brown continues to get out-coached by Celtics' head coach Stevens.

* Joel Embiid continues to take way too many 3-pointers- eight last night. He can't handle beefy Boston center Al Hortford.

* Ben Simmons continues to kill the team n the foul-line, going 2-for-7. You mean to tell me there is no one around that can teach him to  improve his foul shooting/ For a point guard, that's crucial.

* What dope put two ex- Celtic players on the broadcast during TNT's stupid "Player's Only" telecast? They were cackling jackasses and  were rooting for Boston, especially late in the game.

* The Sixers still can't beat the other good teams in the East. They have lost to Milwaukee, Toronto and now Boston during this key stretch of pivotal games.

* Their bench is still not as good as last year, when they featured scorers Bellinelli and Iilyosova.

* I hate watching Jason Tatum play for Boston because he always reminds me of the loser bust Philly took instead of Tatum- Markelle Fultz.

The 76ers play hapless New York at the Garden tonight before heading into the All-Star Break. The Knicks have lost 17 straight games. Does Spike Lee even care or go to the Knick games anymore?

- Day One of Spring Training in Clearwater, Fla. for the Phillies. Pitchers and catchers report today. Single-game tickets are now on sale. Announcing the signing of Bryce Harper would top it off. Imagine ticket sales then!

* The usual bits from reporters are floating on social media. Franco looks trimmer and stronger..Kingery looks like he's been hitting the weight room..Herrera looks more in shape.

* New catcher J.T. Realmuto has been interviewed numerous times since the was introduced by the Phils Tuesday afternoon. He sounds like a passionate, smart, level-headed guy. In fact, he sounds more excited about the possibility of signing Harper than GM Klentak does. He should hit anywhere between second and fifth in the batting order. He just sounds like a leader. Good move by the Phils!

* With all the different opinions on Harper and Machado, I'm sick of it all, and now I'm determined to just chill until someone makes a move. Why stress it?

A San Francisco reporter was on WIP Sports Radio last evening. Surprisingly, he doesn't think the giants will get Harper ( they have been the recent favorite). Apparently, neither does many of the Bay Area fans. In reality, why would Harper want to play for the Giants? They are not offering a long-term contract, as Harper desires. They are not built to win a championship anytime soon.Their ballpark is beautiful but not as hitter-friendly as Citizens Bank Park.

The advantages are that San Francisco is much closer to Harper's home in Las Vegas. Plus SF is a nice city in itself.

With spring training now officially open, time for not only Haprer and Machado, but also the well over one hundred other free agents out there to find a home.Opening Day is not too far away.

- The Flyers bounced back with a big win Monday night, a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over Minnesota. After a brutal travel day, following a tough loss to rival Pittsburgh the night before, even without rookie goalie sensation Carter Hart between the pipes, the Orange and Black still came back twice against  the Wild.

The Flyers play a home-and-home series with the Detroit Red Wings this weekend.

LATE NEWS!!

The Phillies just extended Aaron Nola, giving him a new four-year contract, worth $45 million, plus an optional fifth year. Greta for  Nola. the Phillies and the fans!

Happy Birthday Bill!

"Commitment separates those who live their dreams from those who live their lives regretting the opportunities they have squandered."

- Bill Russell born on this date in 1934.

Bill Russell was the centerpiece of the Boston Celtics dynasty that won 11 NBA Championships during his 13-year career.

A five-time winner of the NBA Most Valuable Player Award and a 12-time All-Star, Russell also led the university of San Francisco to two consecutive NCAA championships ( 1955, 1956). and won a gold medal at the 1956 Summer Olympics as captain of the u.S. national basketball team.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- FLYERS, PHILLIES, SIXERS

- The Flyers lost a really big game to Pittsburgh last night at the Wells Fargo Center, 4-1. A bad call by the referee, an early whistle that nullified a goal which would've changed the game.

Goes to show there are bad officials in all sports.Fans just need  to vent but then let go. It's only a game.

Rookie goalie Carter Hart was just OK in goal.

What is it about the Penguins? Are they that good? Yes, when they face the Flyers at least. Plus they have Sidney Crosby, Give the devil his due, Crosby is a pain in the ass but he is a great player, a real difference maker.

Time to regroup tonight in Minnesota.

-  Bryce Harper news as of the last writing here:

* The latest odds are Harper to the San Francisco Giants and Manny Machado to the Yankees.  The Phillies have the money to sign one or both. After Owner John Middleton's "stupid money" comment both the Mets and Nationals have actually out-spent the Phils do far in free agency.

Whether you agree or not, they did have a shot to  sign pitchers J.A.Happ and Patrick Corbin. They choose to pass on both.

Does Harper really want to play in Philadelphia? Is Phillies management aggressive enough in pursuing Harper?  With two 26-year-old superstars, only now entering their prime, to choose from ( how often does that happen? Another reason to go hard after one or the other), did they not focus on one or the other enough?

How will Phillies brass spin it to the fans if they fail to land either? They will makes excuses like "We tried," or "We still had a  great off-season," or "They really didn't want to play in Philly." The bottom line will be the Phillies, despite having the most money and flexibility, blew it. They didn't get the job done.

They really have improved, with Realmuto, Robertson, Segura and McCuthen. Harper and Machado would be the cherry on top of the sundae, the superstar fans who come out to see, the player who can get the club over the playoff hump, the guy who may influence future free agents to come here.

Speaking of which, if the Phillies fail, to get Harper or Machado, will the fans have faith in management to do everything in their power to sign Mike Trout in two years?

Will the fans boo Harper in August when he comes to town with San Francisco if he snubs the Phils? Or is it the Phillies' fault, which in turn may be reflected in attendance at the ballpark this summer?

Harper/Machado hopefully will sign soon, as spring training starts tomorrow. This is getting old. With over 100 free agents still on the market, something needs to be done to break the logjam so other signings and trades can occur. The Phillies can help in this process by living up to their "spending stupid money" statement and making Harper or Machado an offer they can't refuse.

Mr. Middleton, step up to the plate and don't allow the Giants to steal Harper. Til then it's all talk, no action Phillies.

- Another big game for the 76ers tonight, as they host their rival Boston Celtics. Both are fighting over the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference, and home court advantage in the playoffs. The Sixers come in to the contest relatively healthy while the Celts will be playing without guard Kyrie Irving. They are 2-0 since making a flurry of deals last week just before the trade deadline.

The Sixers need to go at least 18-8 the rest of the way to finish with a better record than last season when they finished with 53 wins, winning their final 16 games in a row.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- SIXERS, PHILLIES, FLYERS

- Magical weekend for the Sixers, beating the Nuggets Friday night at home, then sending a statement to the world by crushing LeBron and the Lakers on Sunday afternoon. The Sixers swept L.A. this season.

The message was sent to the rest of the NBA that Philly will be a hand-full for the rest of the season. These new guys, like Tobias Harris, are gelling already. Embiid, Reddick, Simmons, Butler, McConnell...all playing great during this run. What's new about the current Sixer roster now is, if one guy is having a bad night there are plenty of other options to turn to for scoring.

With wins over tough Western Conference foes, we gotta look or at least think about how the Sixers would match-up in a potential Finals series. They have beaten the Warriors, Lakers and Nuggets recently. The feeling now is that the Sixers can not only hold their own in a seven-game series against anyone out west, they could win, especially if they have home court advantage.

Another big game this Tuesday night as the dreaded Boston Celtics  come to town. The Sixers and Celts are battling over the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference. Revenge is on the Philadelphia side. Another statement game on tap, this time a signal to the East what may be down the road when the playoffs start.

- Among the local celebrities at the game on Sunday afternoon: Carson Wentz with Eagle teammate Alshon Jeffery ( no, he didn't drop his soda); Mike Trout ( please walk across the street and visit Phillies management; the usual attendees such as M. Night Shyamala and Simmons' girlfriend, Kendell Jenner.

- I have an uneasy, queasy feeling when I hear that Ben Simmons contacted  Lakers President Magic Johnson and asked him to meet this summer to make Ben "a better big point-guard. No doubt that Magic could help in this regard, being one of the best big guards ever. But Magic is the enemy. Something suspicious about  an organization working with a potential free agent down the road, helping  a foe improve. Simmons already likes the Hollywood scene. Now he's gonna work with the charming, influential Johnson? Please Sixers, just say no!

- Great week for the Phillies, getting J.T. Realmuto. There's word from USA Today that the San Francisco Giants, after meeting recently with Harper in Las Vegas, say they are "confident"  of signing him ( that's what the Phillies' officials thought after meeting with Harper after the holidays). Rumor is the giants are about to offer Harper a shorter but lucrative contract.

Phillies, time to step-up and spend that "stupid money" you crowed about. Sign him now! q The Giants are not the Yankees, Dodgers or Red Sox. Don't let them out-bid you. They are the stinkin' giants! Get it done!!

Spring training starts this week. Sign Harper, address the starting pitching, and get ready to rock this season! Don't let the fans down- we want to win now!

- Big game tonight as the Flyers host the Penguins. Pittsburgh holds down the second wild card spot so the Orange and Black badly need to beat the Pens in their first visit to Philly this season. Rookie sensation goalie Carter Hart will be playing tonight.

IN MY LIFE- THE BEATLES ON THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW- 55TH ANNIVERSARY

-  February 9, 1964 was truly a night to remember. What happened 55 years ago changed the lives of many Americans even to this day. It was  The Beatles first formal introduction to America as they played the famous variety program, The Ed Sullivan Show.

It changed life as we known. Their performance was extraordinary. They started off with 'She Loves You" and never looked back.

Only three months removed from the tragic Kennedy assassination, we need something.anything..to smile again, to be happy about, to forget the sad reality of the world back then. The British pop group, who called themselves The Beatles, were like a breath of fresh air. It was a perfect storm of great music, performers you couldn't take your eyes away from, fun, excitement and joy. The Beatles were happiness in a world of sorrow.

wasn't a Beatle fan back then. Only seven, I knew of The Fab Four from their music. They were everywhere on the radio, especially their new no. 1 smash hit, "I Wanna Hold Your Hand." You could help but sing or hum it. The hook got ya. They sold millions of records. The group was there in your face, yet not there. We heard The Beatles, but, other than photos, we had not yet seen The Beatles- until February 9th. Then everything changed.

As the Beatles crossed the Atlantic, local radio stations announced their trek, kind like Santa Claus on Christmas Eve. "They're only an hour away! Brace Yourselves!" screamed the disk jockey. so there was a build-up all week to the ultimate climax on the Sullivan show. That's what it felt like.

Now we can truly  appreciate the hysteria of Beatlemania in New York at that time by watching DVDs like "The Beatles- The First U.S. Tour", which is an excellent insider look at  their arrival, their hectic stay, and departure from America that frozen February .One can also get the complete Sullivan show that evening or just The entire Beatles' performance that special evening. The DVDs are better than the numerous books out there on the subject. Seeing it and hearing it- the screaming fans, the wonderful music, soaking in the black and white excitement of the era, is so much better than just reading about it on a page.

So I remember watching The Beatles that night ( along with 72 million others) as a matter of curiosity. I did like their music but knew little about them. Soon, "A Hard Day's Night" would allow us to know The Beatles as individuals, not as a group of four, at least allow us  to think we knew the Beatles on a more personal nature. But watching the group, who seemed to be having so much fun that night, and inviting us to have fun along with them, I couldn't take my eyes off them. They were soon to be everything any guy wanted to be- their clothes, hair, personality, their money, their style. The females- girls and older women alike, wanted to date them, the guys wanted to be them.

After that night The Beatles changed American culture in Rock n' Roll  Elvis was making movies. Guys like Bobby Rydell and Frankie Avalon were popular but were not really Rock n' Roll. It took a British Invasion to remind Americans what Rock n' Roll was, where it came from to begin with, and what it still could be.

After that night, I became a certified Beatle fan. Everywhere you looked there were Beatle wigs, magazines, lunchboxes, you name it, even more so now. We wanted to know more and hear more. We couldn't get enough of The Beatles. They gave us hope and something to look forward to.The  Beatles has arrived and it was like Christmas morning once again.

February 9, 1964. That's  the night that changed my life forever. Suddenly, everyone could smile again.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- FLYERS, PHILLIES

- The Flyers remain red hot as they tronced the visiting Anaheim Ducks on Saturday afternoon, 6-2. Rookie Carter Hart continued his dominant play as the Orange and Black have won 9 of 10 games.

Monday night is a huge game for the Flyers. They face for the first time in Philadelphia their arch-rival, the Pittsburgh Penguins. Pittsburgh just happens to be the club six points ahead of Philly, holding down the second and last wild card slot. A Flyer win tomorrow night cuts the Pen lead to a mere four points. It's almost a must-win game at home.

- After their huge trade on Thursday for All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto, the Phillies have been quiet, hopefully working on more deals and trying to pound out contracts with Bryce Harper, Manny machado, or even both.

It's been a terrifc, eventful off-season for the Phils. They are much better and should project to be an 86 win team, a step up from thier 80-victory season in 2018. It is a successful winter even if they fail to land one of the top two free agents. Yes, I'll be disappointed if they come up empty. Harper or Machado may put the team over the playoff hump, making them a solid 90-win club.

It's cool that the Phillies are trying to win now.Instead of giving us mediocre players like Peter Borjous or Jerome Williams, we are now getitng quality in Realmuto and Andrew McCuthen. But Phillies owner John Middleton was the one who made the "stupid money" comment.I don't doubt he won't spend it, unlike the previous owners. But now that you've set yourself up, make it happen! Overwelm Harper and make him an offer he can't refuse.

I think most fans are feeling as I do. We are frustrated, not only at the Phillies' management. I believe they are earnest and are trying. Harper/Machado means more wins, which means more fans this summer, which also means more revenue. With playoffs even more revenue.  I'm angry at the Harper and Machado and their agents. They have let this drag on way too long. Now, many fans just don't care. Maybe the excitement will regenerate once one of them do sign with the Phillies, but now both are coming off as greedy, passionless, cold-blooded, spoiled brat prima donnas.

Rickey Ricardo was a guest overnight on the Steve Trevelise Show on WIP Sports Radio. He made the great point about, if Harper signs elsewhere, will he become public enemy no. 1 when he plays at Citizens Bank Park this season? Think of J.D. Drew coming back and all that hatred he spawned by refusing to sign with the club that drafted him in the first round.

Not many fans really want Machado, so if he goes some where else, so be it. but Harper will be lustily booed each time he plays here, no doubt about it. It's more fun to have a villain, anyway, especially if he resigns with rival Washington. Only thing is, Harper is really good, especially at CBP, and could  quiet those jeers very quickly.

Back to Realmuto: Ricardo made another excellent point when he said that Realmuto will have a huge impact on the Phils' pitching staff, especially with the younger starts like Eflin, Pivetta and Valasquez. He will block more balls in the dirt and will call a better game then Jorge Alfaro.

Out of the losing Miami atmosphere and away from the spacious stadium where the  Marlins call home, Realmuto can be even better, maybe a 30-homer, 40-doubles guy? He runs like a deer and is a natural leader on the field.  Another reason to get excited for Phillies baseball this summer.

- As spring training camps open this week, let's hope Harper and Machado sign..somewhat-- and break this ridiculous logjam. Their signing will open the door for all the other free agents out there waiting to sign, plus the many trades that need to be made by Opening Day.

Will Phillies Franco, Hernandez, Herrera, Williams or Quinn be dealt? Do the Phils sign a veteran starter? More bullpen help? More work needs to be done before they call "Play Ball" for real.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, SIXERS, FLYERS

- Two days out and I still love the J.T. Realmuto deal. Getting the best catcher in baseball in his prime can't be underestimated. The best description I heard of Realmuto is that "he is a right fielder playing catcher." He is one of the fastest players in baseball. Getting him out of Miami, off a bad team and away from a huge ballpark, may elevate Realmuto to superstar status.

Jorge Alfaro has all kinds of potential, raw power and a rocket arm. But he strikes out way too much
and is lazy on defense.  The 2019 Phillies should be vastly improved on defense. Let's face it- they can't get much worse. A solid defense will help the pitching staff With his numerous passed balls and wild pitches that weren't blocked, Alfaro  didn't help his staff much.

Sixto Sanchez is only 20 years old. When healthy his fastball reaches 100 MPH with pinpoint control. He could be a Pedro Martinez-type ace in a rotation.

Then again, Sanchez is coming off elbow problems, which affected his limited pitching in the minors last season. The Phillies also weren't too thrilled with Sanchez' conditioning.

The organization takes a huge risk by trading it's best pitching prospect.Sanchez could return to haunt the Phils for years to come, especially for a club in the Phillies' division.

Realmuto comes cheap with two more years of club control .He is an extra enticement for friend Bryce Harper to consider  Philadelphia.  Despite the long-term risks I believe the Realmuto signing has made the Phillies a much better team, now and for the near future.

Most of all, after years of waiting on failed prospects (Dom Brown) and below average players (Jerome Williams and Peter Borjous) it's nice to see the Phillies management going for it, instead of kicking the can down the road. Like the other three Philly teams they are going all-in to win now. It's a refreshing take on the Philadelphia sports scene.

The Phillies are giving us hope and a reason to attend or watch ballgames this summer. Nice to know September games may be meaningful this upcoming season.

I'm frustrated by the Harper/Machado waiting game like most fans. It would be nice to wash my hands of both prima donas, but realistically, getting one may put the team over the top in National League East and put more fans in the seats at Citizens Bank Park this season. The Phillies have an improved, solid club which should contend for the division. With Harper or Machado, they suddenly become World Series contenders.

- The Sixers face LeBron James and the Lakers on Sunday afternoon. they put their new pieces on display last night in a home victory over the tough Denver Nuggets. Like the Phils, the 76ers are in an "all-in" mode, trading  for forward Tobias Harris and dumping disgruntled guard Markelle Fultz.

The Flyers, playing the Anaheim Ducks ( who have lost six in a row) this afternoon at the Wells Fargo Center, brought up rookie goalie Carter Hart, after much reservation from former GM Ron Hexstall, and he has led the team to a long winning streak and back into playoff contention.

Thank the Eagles for this sudden spurt of enthusiasm and "go for it" mentality. The Birds signed guys like WR Alshon Jeffery and they promptly won a Super Bowl. Nice to know the rebuilds are over and, a year after the Eagles' Championship Parade, we may see another parade in the not-too-distant future.

Birthplace of Speed Anniversary

Daytona International Speedway is the annual host to the most prestigious event on the NASCAR Cup Championship series, the Daytona 500.

The Daytona 500 traditionally opens the NASCAR season, and the series returns to Daytona in early July.

In 1969 Bill France Jr. decided to build his oval-shaped super-speedway replacing the paved/beach track used on the circuit as late as 1958.

The Daytona infield still includes the 44-acre Lake Lloyd, which was formed when workers had to remove dirt to build up the 31-degree high turns.

The "Super Bowl of Racing" has become one of the biggest events on the sports calendar. Twenty years later the 1979 Daytona 500 became the first 5--=mile race in history to be telecast live in its entirety. Richard Petty extended his own record by winning a sixth Daytona 500 before CBS cameras.

IN THE NEWS- MLB ABANDONING 'DISABLED LIST'

One more item from Disability Scoop..

Major League Baseball is reportedly renaming its "disabled list" over concerns that the language gives the wrong impression of what it is to have a disability.

ESPN reports that the league will begin using the term "injured list" instead.

The change is intended to eliminate any suggestion that sidelined players have disabilities or that those with disabilities are somehow unable to play sports, according to ESPN.

"The principle concern is that using the term 'disabled' for players who are injured supports the misconception that people with disabilities are injured and therefore are not able to participate or compete in sports, " wrote Jeff Pfeifer, Major League Baseball's senior director of league economics and operations, in a 'Disabled List' to  be the 'Injured List' at both the major and minor league levels."

The report indicates that the rules for what's been known as the disabled list will remain the same.

ESPN said the change, which is effective immediately, came at the urging of disability advocacy groups.

Other professional sports leagues use various terms including "inactive," "injured" and "physically unable" to describe players who are hurt.

IN THE NEWS- CEREBRAL PALSY AT CENTER OF NETFLIX COMEDY

 Another article from Disability Scoop...

Netflix is picking up a comedy series about a man with cerebral palsy that has the backing of a 'Big Bang Theory" star.

The streaming service said this week that it ordered eight episodes of the new series "Special." The semi-autobiographical show stars Ryan O'Connell who is gay and has cerebral palsy.

"Special" is based on O'Connell's 2015 book "I'm Special: And Other lies We Tell Ourselves." It tells the story of "a gay man with mild cerebral palsy who decides to rewrite his identity as an accident victim and finally go after the life he wants," Netflix said.

Jim Parsons, best known as Sheldon Cooper on CBS's "The Big Bang Theory," is an executive producer of the show.

"Special" will premiere on Netflix on April 12.

IN THE NEWS- NEW EMOJI INCLUDE PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

From Disability Scoop..

A dozen icons depicting the experiences of people with disabilities are coming to smartphones and other devices later this year.

The Unicode Consortium- the organization that standardizes the emoji offered by Apple, Google and other device makers- released 59 new emoji this week. Among them are numerous images portraying various aspects of the disability experience.

The new disability-related icons were requested by Apple last year.

"The current selection of emoji provides a wide array of representations of people, activities and objects meaningful to the general public, but very few speak to the life experiences of those with disabilities," Apple said in its proposal. "This new set of emoji that we are proposing aims to provide a wider array of options to represent basic categories for people with disabilities."

The new offerings include icons showing people using manual and power wheelchairs, a service dog, a hearing aid and prosthetics, among other special needs. Some of the emoji have male and female versions and variants for skin tone.

Unicode said that the newest icons are likely to become available on mobile phones in September or October.

Apple worked with the American Council of the Blind, the Cerebral Palsy Foundation and the National Association of the Deaf to develop the disability-specific emoji. The company acknowledged that the additions do not reflect the whole range of experiences of those with disabilities, but said they offer "an initial starting point for greater representation for diversity within the emoji universe."

THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY-FEBRUARY 8

Timeline: With the first selection...

On February 8, 1936, the National Football League held the first-ever college player draft. The first selection was made by the Philadelphia Eagles, who chose University of Chicago halfback Jay Berwanger, winner of the first Heisman Trophy two months earlier.

Also, one year ago today..

The Eagles championship parade. A cold day, a memorable day, as millions of fans lined broad Street down to the Art Museum to celebrate the Eagles first-ever Super Bowl championship.

So many great speeches at the Art Museum, especially the Jason Kelcie speech. Dressed as a colorful Mummer, Kelce gave a passionate, honest and somewhat outrageous pep talk to all who gathered, a speech which will forever like in Philadelphia sports history.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, SIXERS, FLYERS, EAGLES

- What a special day in Philadelphia sports! The Sixers make another big move and the Phillies surprise with a trade that make them even better. Let's start with the Phillies..

The team acquired All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto form the Miami for catcher Jorge Alfaro and top pitching prospect Sixto Sanchez. Single-A lefty Will Stewart was also part of the day, plus the phillies send international money to the marlins as well.

At first I didn't want to give up a young guy like Sanchez. He's only 20 and throws 100 MPH. But how often does one get a chance to trade for the best catcher in baseball?

To me, a catcher is like a quarterback. He runs the on-field club. Realmuto is a fine defensive receiver and handles the pitching staff well. Getting away from a bad team like Miami and the biggest stadium in baseball can only help the 27-year-old Realmuto to bloom. Look what happened to Christian Yelich when he was traded to Milwaukee- he became the National League Most Valuable Player.

Realmuto is the fastest catcher in baseball, and overall, is one of the swiftest runners in the league. He's a terrific player and light years above the mediocre Alfaro.

The 25-year-old Alfaro has worlds of potential. He has raw power and a cannon arm. But he strikes out way too much. Defensively he is a liability, giving up ill-timed passed balls. He seemed often lazy behind the plate, unwilling to block balls in the dirt.

Sanchez is coming off an injury-filled year. He is a sore-armed pitcher. Plus the Phillies weren't pleased with his conditioning.

The organization has depth at starting pitching in the minors. Adonis Medina is also highly thought of, among others. True, someone needs to step up and take over the mantle of Best Pitching Prospect for Sixto.

Realmuto stretches the line-up. Instead of putting a weak-hitting catcher at the bottom of the line-up, Realmuto can hit near the top of the batting order. In a league where quality catchers are a premium, Realmuto is not only a big upgrade but clearly gives the Phils a nightly advantage with the catching position.

The extra bonus is that Bryce Harper loves Realmuto and has campaigned for the catcher to join Washington. With the chance to finally play with Realmuto, Harper can play with a good team with a chance for a championship.

The Phillies still have all of that "stupid money" owner John Middleton crowed about. Realmuto comes cheap for an All=Star catcher. The Phillies now need to sign him long-term.

Pitching can still be had, as the rotation can use another veteran starter and the bullpen still can  add depth. But the real missing piece of the puzzle is either Harper or Manny Machado (preferably Harper). Only then will the Phillies be considered favorites for the NL East title.

- The Sixers added to their team by subtraction, getting rid of former no.1 draft pick Markelle Fultz, dealing him to Orlando. It really didn't much matter what they got back in return ( although they surprisingly did get a No.1 pick back in return). Just getting Fultz' money off the books was a plus. The 76ers didn't need the drama of Fultz' supposed medical problems and whether he plays or not.

If the Sixers hadn't screwed up the draft pick to begin with, this entire Fultz charade would've never happened.

Philly is set-up for a deep run in the playoffs. It's now up to Coach Brett Brown to make it work.

- The Flyers' eight- game winning streak was snapped last night by the lowly L.A. Kings, 3-2 in a shoot-out. The Orange and Black fought hard to tie the game with only 17 seconds left in regulation. Goalie Anthony Stolarz was OK in goal, stopping 37 shots.

I hate the shoot-out. Compared to the exciting 3-on-3 overtime period, the shoot-out is anti-climatic.

The Flyers did pick up an all-important point in the playoff race.Rookie sensation Carter Hart plays goal on Saturday afternoon against Anaheim.

- Soon Eagles' QB Nick Foles will be gone. Everything will come to a head in early March. Will Foles walk as a free agent and end up with the giants? Will the Birds trade him and get a first or second round draft pick for Foles?

I get it that Carson Wentz is the younger. more talented QB. I worry that Wentz, until he wins a Super Bowl, will always be in Foles' shadow. Missed passes and the fickle Philly fans will wonder if St. Nick would've done better.

Of course, Wentz needs to stay healthy as well. Having Foles here as an emergency back-up. Now it will be Nate Sudfeld. Imagine the pressure on Wentz if Foles was still here. There will be pressure anyway, until Wentz succeeds in the playoffs, but you can't have Wentz looking over his shoulder .

Trading Wentz instead of Foles would bring back more value. Foles is only 30. he can play another 10 years. Foles has already done it, winning the Eagles a world championship. Wentz wants to do what Foles has already accomplished. Do you take the risk of saying goodbye to the sure thing in favor of hoping the potential guy stays healthy and performs?

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, SIXERS, EAGLES, FLYERS

- As we wait for Machado/Harper ( now known as Macharper) to make up their minds, there is a rumor that the Phillies are deeply involved in trade discussions with the Miami Marlins for All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto.

Realmuto is already a terrific player. Get him out of the spacious stadium where Miami plays and he may blossom like christian Yelich did once he got to Milwaukee. If a catcher is the quarterback in baseball, Realmuto is one of the best. He is only 27 and will be a free agent in two years.

Harper has mentioned wanting to play with Realmuto since they hit it off at the All-Star game.  Trading for Realmuto may bring an extra bonus- Harper.

One glitch is that Miami is demanding the Phillies best pitchimg prospect- Sixto Sanchez- as part of the return package. Sanchez is only 20-years-old. He throws 100 MPH, though he has been injured on and off.

I would hate to give up Sixto, especially to a team in the division. He could come back to haunt the Phils for years.

So, the organization has a big decision to make soon- even before Machado or Harper come to town

- Those proposed rule changes in baseball are still being discussed. The DH and the three-batter minimum may be adopted. I'm old-school and would rather they not mess with the Grand Old Game at all. The one proposal I hate is putting a runner on second base to start an extra inning. It's a gimmicky move and it cheapens the game. What you will get it teams sacrificing the runner to third, and a fly ball winning the game- all without a hit

- The Reading Fightin' Phils named Kirsten Karbach as their new play-by-play broadcaster. She worked for another Phillies minor  league club, Clearwater, as their play-by-play announcer for five years. She remains baseball's only female play-by-play broadcaster.

- Now that the Sixers have even more stars, it's up to Coach Brett Brown to make it work. It may take time for the chemistry to gel. by the playoffs, if the 76ers don't make a deep run, Brown needs to go.

- Looks like it may be against the rules for the Eagles try franchise Nick Foles with the intent to trade him. Surely they won't keep him as a back-up for $25 million. They may need to allow Foles to walk as a free agent and be happy with the compensatory 3rd round draft pick next year.

- The Flyers go for 9 in a row tonight when they host the L.A. Kings. Rookie sensation Carter Hart won't be in goal, as Anthony Stolarz gets the start. Last time he played Stolarz shut-out the Rangers in Madison Square garden.

PHILLIES PHODDER-BASEBALL RULE CHANGES?

Every year Major League Baseball and the Player's Union throw out rule change proposals. Some stick while most don't.

The following are  the current changes being proposed, some to take effect as early as this season, most likely in to be implemented in 2020: ( this from  ESPN.com)

- Three-batter minimum
I'm for this. Would speed up the game. Would do away with the one-batter left-handed reliever.

- Universal DH
I'm for it. It's stupid to be playing under different rules if you have Inter league play. Would bring more offensive but take away some late-inning strategy

-Single Trade Deadline-
I'm for it. Would encourage more trades before July 31 and hopefully more free agent signings in the off-season to make the first half of the season more relevant.

( By the way, as we see now, they should set a limit in the off-season for free agents to sign..maybe from December 1- February 1?)

- 20-Second Pitch Clock
They already have this and don't enforce it. Does it really speed up the game that much? ( like the Intentional Walk?)

- Expansion of Rosters to 26, with a 12 pitcher max
I'm for it. Would give managers more flexibility. What I especially like is the 12-pitcher max. Managers would need to use thier bullpens more wisely and not make so many pitching changes. Would increase offense by carrying more bench players.

-Draft Advantages for Winning Teams
I'm for it. Reward winning rather than losing.

-Lower the Pitching Mound
Not sure how i feel about this. Another way to increase offense. They did this in the 1960s when Koufax, Gibson would dominating. I like 1-0 games and well-pitched classics.

- Start Extra Innings with Runner on Second Base
I'm NOT for this at all. It cheapens the game. A gimmick. They are already doing this in the minor leagues. This proposal would be to try it in spring training games and in the All-Star Game. I hate this proposal. You play the entire game and then you don't earn a runner in  scoring position? In fact, there is talk of putting a runner on third base starting the  13th inning. Bad move all to save time.

Name the Diamondbacks' player who scored the winning run against the Yankees in Game 7 of the 2001 World Series

A. Luis Gonzalez
B. Jay Bell
C. Mark Grace
D. Tony Womack

Answer: B.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, with New York manager Joe Torre pulling the infield in with one out and the bases loaded, Gonzalez looped a single just beyond the infield and Bell scored from third to complete Arizona's two-run rally.  It was the Diamondback' first and only world championship ( to date). They had to rally from behind against new Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera, arguably the greatest closer of all time.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- SIXERS, EAGLES, FLYERS, PHILLIES

- Nice trade by the Sixers overnight, getting, among others, scorer Tobias Harris form the  Clippers. They gave up a lot, marginal players plus four draft picks. Plus Harris could walk as a free agent at the end of the season.

The Sixers better be sure they can sign Harris long-term. They needed to make this deal, now having four legit stars in their starting lineup. It may take time for Harris to learn how to play with Embiid, Simmons and Butler. The deal should pay-off for their playoff run.

Now, the team needs to deal Markelle Fultz ASAP.  Fultz is a distraction and is wasting time by not playing, a total bust. If they can get bench help for Fultz, I would do it.

There will probably be a follow-up trade by Thursday afternoon.

Kudos to the Sixer organization for putting pressure on themselves to win this year. They have gone all-in for this season and beyond ( if they sign Harris and Jimmy Butler, also a free agent). What a difference from a few seasons ago when the team tanked and only won 10 games.

- As expected, The Eagles picked up the $20 million option on QB Nick Foles, who in turn, voided the option for $2 million. Now, the Birds need to make a deal by March 5 or Foles will walk. The team would receive a compensatory draft pick next year, probably a third-rounder. A trade would hopefully bring back a first or second round pick.

Not that it was going to happen but it's pretty official now that Foles won't be back. The Eagles won't pay their back-up quarterback $ 25 million for one season. They would be taking a risk by franchising Foles. What if no other team would be willing to trade for him? Would the Birds be stuck with Foles? Not only would that screw-up the QB situation  but their salary cap situation would be devastated.

- The Flyers go for nine in a row tonight against the Los Angeles Kings in South Philly tonight. The magic of goalie Carter Hart grows with each game.

-As we still wait for Machado and Harper to make up their minds ( Phillies broadcaster Gregg Murphy feels the Phils will get at least one of them, by spring training), there is other news to ponder:

* Rumors of the Phillies' interest in Miami All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto has increased. The Marlins originally balked at the Philadelphia offer, but Miami is finding a surprising lack of interest in Realmuto. The Phillies could offer Jorge Alfaro, one of their stud minor league pitchers ( Sanchez or Medina), plus more to get it done.

I like Alfaro's tools, especially his rocket- arm, but if you have a chance to get a solid All-Star catcher like Realmuto, you do it. His offense would be even better out of the spacious Miami ballpark.

Realmuto will probably end up with the Reds or Dodgers, as rumored. And maybe this renewed spark in the Phillies  is all a  ploy by the Marlins to jack up their price. Still, having a solid catcher is something the Phils lacked last summer and would put the club even closer to contending, even without Machado or Harper yet.

* This story about Manager Gabe Kapler and an alleged sexual assault incident that happened when Kapler worked for the Dodgers has legs but should be blown-over by the time baseball starts. I don't think much will come of it.

* The candidates for this summer's Phillies Hall of Fame are out. Honestly, I'm really stretching to find anyone worthy. Scott Rolen, a solid third baseman, couldn't wait to get out of Philadelphia and return to the Midwest, where the pressure is less. Bobby Abreu, a good hitter who walked too much, never met an outfield wall he didn't like. Manny Trillo and Bake McBride, both key players in the 1980 championship season, are too old and not remembered by millennial voters. Pitching coach Rich Dubee?

My choice, if there was a write-in option ( there isn't) would be longtime Phillies P.A. announcer Dan Baker. He has been there for the team since 1972 and has been the P.A. announcer for so many huge games, witnessing so many great players on the Phillies and by the opposition over the years,

Both crazy Lenny Dykstra and Curt Schilling . bad guys, are more baseball worthy then others on the list.

Next year the Phillies' WOF will start to welcome the likes of Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins, so there won't be such a problem for several years, as the great 2208-2011 players are inducted.
