THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY- JANUARY 2

'Canes upset' Huskers

"We were trying to win the game, I don't think you go for a tie in that case. You try to win the game. We wanted an undefeated season and a clear-cut national championship."

- Tom Osborne

35 years ago today Nebraska coach Tom Osborne gambled the national championship, trying for an undefeated record. Miami would jump from #5 to #1 when the Cornhuskers' two point conversion attempt failed in the final seconds. Strong safety Ken Calhoun knocked Turner Gill's two-point PAT pass out of Jeff Smith's hands with 48 seconds left and the Hurricanes held on to a 31-30 Orange Bowl victory in the 50th edition of the classic.
