The Academy Award nominations for 2019 were announced yesterday. Here are some of my random thoughts..
- I only saw two of the films for Best Picture- A Star Is Born and Boehemian Rhapsody. Both were really good but worthy of an Oscar> Of the two, A Star Is Born was better. I love Queen's music, but as a film, BR wasn't Best Picture material. Malak's portrayal of Freddie Mercury earned him a Best Actor nod.
- Black Panther and Black Klansman got nominations. Both are good movies but I know there was a lot of pressure, even going back to last spring when Black Panther was in theaters, for both to at least get a nomination.
- Hard to believe that Director Spike Lee never got an nomination until this year for Black Klansman. Many forget that he was snubbed for Do The Right Thing.
- Everyone thinks the Best Actress award will come down to Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born) and Mellissa McCarthy, but I like Glenn Close. She finally deserves an Oscar, after so many great roles, including turns in Fatal Attraction and The Natural.
- Is it finally time for Bradley Cooper to win an Oscar as Best Actor? He is nominated for A Star Is Born? I'm also glad that veteran Sam Elliot also get recognition as Best Supporting Actor.
- The Oscars still have no host. Reports are that they will go host less, with Actors taking up the slack with introductions. I think most people are used to a host,s o this ceremony may feel a little weird and disjointed. I guess Billy Crystal wasn't available?
-Sure bets: A Star Is Born ("Shallow") for Best Original Song and Best Animated Film (The Incredibles 2).
- Elton John will probably host his annual Oscar party, taking a break from his farewell world tour, and also line himself up for a future Oscar attention, as "Rocket Man", the Elton John film bio, comes out this summer.
- Amy Adams is cute, the only reason I'm glad she is nominated for a Best Supporting Actress award.
- Finally, there is already bitching that no Asian actors or female directors were nominated. Maybe they just weren't good enough?
