THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY- JANUARY 1

Big Easy Legends

40 years ago today Paul "Bear" Bryant's second-ranked Crimson Tide survived a late fumble to capture a national championship share for the fifth time in 17 years.

in a memorable coaching matchup, Joe Paterno's #1 Penn State Nittany Lions were stacked up at the goal line to preserve Alabama's 14-7 Sugar bowl victory.

On the same day, Joe Montana staged his greatest collegiate comeback, coming off the bench and leading Notre Dame to a 35-34 victory over the University of Houston with a touchdown pass to Kris Haines with no time left on the clock.
