MOVIE REVIEW- A DOG'S WAY HOME

** ( out of four stars)

I love dog movies because I love dogs. So I looked forward to the latest canine film to come out, "A Dog's Way Home", which I saw last night in King of Prussia. Me, my girlfriend, and two other people at a 7:00 showing on a Friday night.

The film is from the same people who made "A Dog's Purpose." the sentimental tear-jerker out a few years ago about a mutt who dies- again and again- and returns to life as other dogs.  I really liked that movie, knowing i was being manipulated the whole time, but the movie had heart, with a certain supernatural theme to it.

This new dog movie is sweet and decent for kids ( despite a few harrowing episodes) but it didn't make me cry like "A Dog's Purpose"( yes, I admit it) nor did it touch my heart in the same way.

The movie is about Bella, a putbull living in Denver, Colorado, who finds a home, then gets lost, and for most of the second half of the flick, tries to find her way home. In the process of doing so, Bella meets up with a cougar, a fox, wolves, buffalo, plus gets chained to a homeless dead guy.. There's a side-story about "dog discrimination", as pitbulls seem to get a bum deal in Colorado. All this packed into less than two hours.

The animal scenes are cute and playful. The running commentary by Bella is stupid. the human actors are pretty stupid too, although it was nice to see the beautiful Ashley Judd headlining.

The cougar turned out to be fake, computer-generated. Otherwise, most of the footage seemed "real."

True, you should be a dog-lover to like this movie. At times i thought i was watching the Hallmark Channel. Predictable with a certain charm, i suppose.

They played  the trailer for the upcoming sequel to "A Dog's Purpose" coming out in May I think the title is "A Dog's Journey Home." So you've got "A Dog's Purpose," "A Dog's Way Home," and soon "A Dog's Journey Home." A nice formula but a bit confusing, even for us dog lovers.
