PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, SIXERS

- On the day beloved Phillies chairman David Montgomery passed away after a five-year battle with cancer, the Phillies won yesterday afternoon, blanking the Cardinals 5-0. It was a rare series win in St. Louis, as the Phils won the final two games.

Jared Eichoff pitched eight brilliant innings, surrendering only three hits. He was in complete control, and only a high pitch count stopped Eichoff from pitching a complete game. Siranthony Dominguez pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

Cesar Hernandez, seemingly out of his recent funk, had two more hits, including his third home run of the season. With Scott Kingery on the verge of returning from the injured List, Hernandez has picked it up and hit out of the lead-off spot, as Andrew McCuthon rested. It will be interesting to see if Hernandez continues to hit lead-off or goes back to his spot lower in the batting order.

The team is now 3 1/2 games in first place in NL East, as the braves, Mets and Nationals all struggle on the road. The Phillies can pad their lead by winning in Kansas City this weekend against the AL Central last place Royals.

The schedule gets tougher next week as the Brewers come to Philadelphia for four games, followed by the Rockies for three.

The Phillies are off today. Jake Arrieta starts in KC on Friday night.

- It do-or-die tonight in South Philly for the Sixers, who face elimination  in their second round playoff series with Toronto. Will Joel Embiid be healthy and play well? Will Ben Simmons come alive? Is this coach Brett Brown's swan song if the 76ers lose tonight?

This one game will have so much to do with the future of this franchise. Winning sends the series back to Canada tied 3-3. What happens over the weekend will be any one's guess but tonight is a must-win first. A loss might mean a major shake-up with the coach, Simmons and others on the squad.
