PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- EAGLES, FLYERS, BASEBALL PLAYOFFS

- With running back Jay Ajayi going down with a torn ACL, the Eagles need another back (preferably younger and more explosive).Rumors are swirling as to which running back may be coming to Philadelphia. Is LeSean (Shady) McCoy heading back to the Linc? He is over 30 and seems to be on the downside of an excellent career. Plus his off-field problems continue to haunt him.

Even for a mid-level draft pick ( 5th rounder?) bringing back Shady may be a risk. I'm thinking they will try to survive with Smallwood and Sproles ( when he returns from injury).

Who knew that Ajayi would blow out his knee again? But I also think the Birds miss LaGarrette Blount, the bruising halfback who is doing well with the Lions.

I get it- after a Super Bowl season, you're gonna lose good players and even coaches. Add the salary cap and it's not the same championship team as last year.

I think what the Eagles really miss is an outside speedy receiver, someone to go deep and stretch the defense. Torrey Smith was that guy last season. mike Wallace was supposed to be the burner this year, with rookie Shelton Gibson learning from the bench.Another ex- Bird, Desean Jackson, who killed the Eagles down in Tampa Bay after the opener, would be a perfect fit.

Should the Eagles go all-in at this point to get back to the Super bowl? Yes! Wentz should be around for another 10-15 tears. But guys like Bennett, Peters, Long, Sproles areonly in Philly for a short time. The open window is closing.

- Quick turnaround for the team, playing Thursday night in New York, the first division game vs the Giants. Must-win for both teams. If the Eagles should happen to lose in New York,, the would fall to 2-4 and fans will start jumping off local bridges.

My Eagles- Giants pick will occur tomorrow.

Gritty sure didn't help the home opener as they lost to San Jose in epic fashion, 8-2. The most embarrassing home opener defeat in 50 years. As I've said before the Flyers aren't going anywhere until they get a true No. 1 goalie- and maybe a real coach as well.

The Red Sox closed out the Yanks, surprisingly taking both games in New York. They  owned the Bronx Bombers all year, this time with playoff revenge on their side.

Now comes a classic match-up of the team with the overall best record in baseball in 2018- Boston- taking on the defending world champion Houston Astros in seven games. The winner should also go on to capture the World Series, unless both pitching staffs take a beating.

Imagine the potential pairings now: a repeat of the 2017 World Series, with Houston playing Los Angeles; Boston and the red-hot Milwaukee  Brewers, winners of 11 in a row, would be intense.

The Dodgers have the experience and stars; the brewers are streaking and have the home field advantage. I like Milwaukee in 6 games.

I have to pick Boston to win in 6 as well over the Astros. Anything less than a World series would be disappointing for the Red Sox, despite their tremendous season. Houston is a near-perfect team, but Boston will somehow win.

No classic Yankee-Dodger Series again, but one will be coming in the years ahead, with all the money both franchises have and the deep farm systems.

Meanwhile, the Phillies lay low and owner John Middleton doesn't speak.
