- The Phillies begin their stretch run tonight with a weekend series vs the San Diego Padres. Arrieta, Valasquez and Pivetta pitch for Philly. I can only imagine the frenzy tonight if Manny Machado was a Phillie. He's not and life goes on. The team is still in first place, play the lowly Padres, then get ready to host Machado, Chase Utley and the dreaded Dodgers for three games next week.
Atlanta travels to Washington for three games this weekend. Either the Nationals get back into the race- they are 5 1/2 games behind- or the Braves bury them. The Braves stay on the road when they visit Miami, then go home next weekend for a big four-game series with the Dodgers.
Meanwhile, the Phils won't have to worry about facing elite closer Brad Hand this weekend, He was traded to Cleveland yesterday. There were rumors of Franco going to San Diego for Hand. Obviously the Padres liked the young stud catcher from the indians rather than Franco.
Still a lot of targets on the market for the next 11 days. The Phillies needs another bat, bullpen help and another starting pitcher would solidify the rotation.
- Please Gabe Kapler, if you are reading this, get Carlos Santana out of the clean-up spot. I want my No. 4 hitter to knock in runs, not walk. I need my clean-up hitter to have power and a better average than .209. Rhys Hoskins should be the clean-up hitter in the line-up.
- The Sixers are rumored to be interested in Cavaliers' forward Kyle Korver, a former 76er and one of the greatest 3-point shooters in the NBA. If they obtained Korver he would be paired with another elite 3-point shooter, the recently resigned J.J. Reddick. Spreading the floor when Embiid and Simmons are together on the floor with open up the inside.
- Tickets to Eagles practice sessions sold out in minutes. Tickets were free but you need a ticket to get into Lincoln Financial Field. Up tp 68,000 fans may be attending both open practices for the public.
Training camp opens next Wednesday. Hard to believe, since we are in the middle of summer, that after Wednesday it's football until early February. Humid and sultry now- icy and cold then. All eyes are on Opening Night, September 6 vs. the Falcons, when the birds play on Thursday Night Football- and the championship banner flies over the Linc.
