It was as if the Phillies forfeited Sunday's game in Pittsburgh. They started the average Drew Anderson, and it seemed almost a foregone conclusion that their six game winning streak would be snapped. They lost, 4-1, but remain tied for first place in NL East with losing Atlanta.
- De Los Santos will make his major league debut on Tuesday against the Mets in New York. Valasquez returns on Wednesday. The dynamic duo of Eflin and Nola pitch the doubleheader tonight.
-Maybe Manny Machado won't come to Philly this summer. Looks like he will go to the Dodgers or Brewers. but I fully expect the Phils to sign Machado in the off-season. More realistically, I see the Phillies getting Brad Hand, the All-Star closer from San Diego, or the super utility guy form Kansas City, Whit Merrifield. Cole Hamels seems less do-able now, but another starting pitcher wouldn't hurt ( J. A. Happ?). What about a consistent right fielder with pop?
Whatever, GM Klentak needs to do something to improve the club. Think about it: The offensive isn't clutch and strikes out way too much; the defense is shaky, as well as the bullpen.Yet the team is tied for first place! With a little help from the front office, the club can go from a squad that is giving us entertaining, meaningful baseball to a surprising, legitimate contender for the playoffs.
- Andrew Knapp batted lead-off on Sunday, the first time a Phillie catcher has ever hit lead-off..ever. If Hernandez wasn't going to play, why not hit Kingery in the 1-spot? Kapler tried to get too cute with Knapp, who predictably didn't produce as the lead-off guy.
