PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES

The Phillies were sleepwalking thru their lackluster 2-0 loss to Miami Saturday afternoon. Aaron Nola gave up two first inning runs, which ended up being the only runs scored in the entire game. Once again the team couldn't hit, and failed to come up clutch in key situations.

Even with the loss, the Phillies remain 1  1/2 games ahead of Atlanta and 6 1/2 games in front of Washington, who both lost.Whatever happens today, the Phils will go to the All-Star break in 1st place in NL East. A remarkable thing, considering their lack of offense, their shaky defense and their inconsistent bullpen. Tell me the Phillies would be in the lead in their division in mid-July  and I would've taken that offer long ago in spring training.

- Zach Eflin is scratched today with a blister on his pitching hand. Enyel de Los Santos gets another start, this time vs the Marlins. With another impressive outing one would have to say that de Los Santos would get a shot at a regular spot in the rotation soon, taking the place of either Pivetta or Valasquez.

- The rumors of Manny Machado coming to the Phillies soon are heating up. Reliever Zach Britton would be part of the deal. Names mentioned to possibly be traded on the Phillies side include major league players Altherr and Franco, with minor league prospects Kilom and  Suarez, among others, in the trade. I would be OK with that, as key prospects Sanchez, Medina, Heasley de Los Santos and Dominguez stay with Philly.

I doubt that Machado would agree to sign a long-term contract. But he would instantly upgrade the Phillies' current line-up, gives them a better chance to reach the post-season, and, even as a rental, may like Philadelphia enough to ultimately sign for the future. A trade going down this week would be ideal, as the team starts the second half of the season at home on Friday vs San Diego.
