- Jacob deGrome or not, the Phillies offense continued to struggle last nigh tin their disappointing 3-0 10-inning loss to the Mets. It would've been nice to take 3 of 4 from the struggling New Yorkers, especially after the way the Mets have manhandled the Phils the past few seasons. Poor fundamentals hurt again, as failure to move runners cost the team. Plus, when you need to use a journeyman like Leiter Jr. at the end of games, it shows you still need back-of-the bullpen help.
- Do-nothing Phillies GM Klentak seems scared to make a move. Who says you gotta wait until July 31 to make a deal? It would be nice to come out of Baltimore tonight with both Manny Machado and Zach Britton . It won't happen. Something needs to be done to improve the club. Who knows if the team will be in first place this time next summer? And where is team President Andy MacPhail??
- I don't worry about Machado joining the Yankees, Brewers or Dodgers, then signing a long-term contract to stay with them. I believe Machado will file for free agency, no matter what. He would be a fool not to. He has played all this time and has earned that right. Is till say the Phils have the money and the position ( shortstop) to get Machado in the off-season, no matter where he goes for the rest of the summer.
- Walks aside, Santana is killing the offense with his puny .214 average. He should not be hititng clean-up- Hoskins should hit 4th everyday. Sadly, Kingery is killing them too. Too many strikeouts and not enough clutch hits.
- With the loss, the Phillies drop back to a tie with the braves for 1st place in NL East. The Phils need to win at least 3 of their next 4 games going into the All;Star break agains tthe lowly Orioles and Marlins. Their first series after the break is a home weekend with the last-place Padres, so again, a chance to make up ground on Atlanta, who play the tough Diamondbacks this weekend at home.
- Birthdays today for both Bill Cosby and Shady McCoy, Both soon-to-be jailbirds? Bad guys, for sure. If found guilty of abusing his ex-girlfriend, kids and dog, I wouldn't be surprised if we've seen the last of McCoy on the football field.
- My mom's family was from Czechoslovakia, so I guess I'll be rooting for Croatia on Sunday in the World Cup final. I've been to France and they generally dislike most Americans . They do have great pastries, though... Maybe if the USA was involved I would've gotten into the World Cup more. Maybe in 2026 when the tournament comes to North America ( including maybe Philadelphia?).
