- Our Phillies are in sole possession of first place in national League East, after beating the Mets last night behind rookie Enyel De Los Santos. The 22-year-old impressed during his seven innings in the 7-3 victory. He was sent back to Lehigh Valley after the game. I want to see more of De Los Santos. He pitches in MLB's Futures Game this Sunday in Washington.
Nick Pivetta and Vince Valasquez are now on notice. Both need to pitch well or else De Los Santos will step in. He gives the team great insurance in case of injury too.
Pivetta shows great stuff, striking out 13 batters earlier this season. Valasquez should move into the bullpen and become another late option along with Siranthony Dominguez. Nice to know a quality young arm is only a phone call away.
- Mikail Franco continues to make a strong case for the Phillies not to give up on him so soon. In the No. 8 spot, Franco continues to hit, while making sparkling defensive plays at third base. If nothing else, his trade value should be higher now. The persistent rumors are Franco to the Padres for All-Star closer Brad Hand.
- Philadelphia is 51-39, a game ahead of Atlanta, still 5 1/2 games ahead of the Nationals. Tough game tonight against Jacob deGrome . They travel back to Baltimore for one game on Thursday night, then off to Miami for a weekend series against the marlins before the All-Star break.
- Ex-Eagle Lesean (Shady) McCoy's old girlfriend was beat-up in Georgia, and now allegations have been made against McCoy for this event, plus charges that he abused his son and killed his dog after a beating. If true, he deserves jail plus banishment form the NFL. Too bad he doesn't have corrupt ex- Philly DA Seth Williams, now in prison, to bail him out of trouble again. I hated Chip Kelly, but he did ship Shady's ass to Buffalo.
- Next week during the All-Star break, look for my team-by-team assessment of every team in major league baseball, plus grades on the Phillies' players so far.
- Don't forget to check my blog this fall with tons of Eagles and football discussions and things to ponder. I went 19-0 picking Birds' games last fall. We break down every NFL game, make our Best Bet pick of the week. Plus winter teams talk, Flyers and Sixers. Baseball playoff talk too. Please check back in the blog archives for Eagles coverage all thru their championship season.
