PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, ESPYS

- So, Manny Machado was finally traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers. I'll see him- along with Chase Utley ( his final game in Philadelphia) next Wednesday when the Dodgers come to town. Will I boo Machado or cheer him? Neither. I won't cheer for a guy on the opposing team. Utley played for the Phillies and helped bring them a world championship in 2008. He will get standing ovations all 3 games he plays at Citizens Bank Park next week. I won't boo Machado either. Why piss him off/ It wasn't his fault he was dealt to LA> We want to woo him not boo him. Now, after the season if he doesn't sign with the Phils I'll boo the hell out of him next time he comes into town in 2019.

- Meanwhile, the Phils and  do-nothing GM Klentak sit. The fans should be angry that the organization isn't committed enough to win. If the organization doesn't care, why should the fans? Machado foes to LA and immediately is in a pennant race. The Dodgers have a two-moth advantage to negotiate with Manny to sign long-term. They have the money to throw at him, along with the perks of Southern California weather, movie stars and the Dodger mystique.

Klentak needs to do something before the July 31st trade deadline. They need a bat ( Moustakis?), bullpen help ( Hand or Britton?) and another starter ( Hamels or Happ).  Let's not forget all of Klentak's blunders signing free agents ( Michael Saunders) and making trades. Worst of all, under Klentak's watch, the organization signed stiff Mickey Moniak, who is a total bust. They selected him at No. 1. Think of it- they had their choice of any college or high school player in the country and they took a weak, undersized high school outfielder with no power.   Not only is Moniak not on the horizon to help the Phillies, but he wasn't a trade chip to get a guy like Machado.

MacPhail has weaseled back into his burrow, not to be seen until after the season. Middleton, who is all talk and no action so far, hasn't been heard from. The fans are left disappointed and  frustrated. It's been a fun summer of hope, with the team somehow in first place at the break. We asked for meaningful baseball and we have it. There is hope.  But with the team succeeding we want more,. The rest of the summer could've been a race to the playoffs. Sell-outs every night. No more opposing teams coming into our park and taking over.

The front office has two chances to make amends. They need to make significant improvements to the team by July 31, and they need to make a big splash in free agency after the season.

- The pitching rotation for the weekend Padres series is Arrieta, Valasquez and Pivetta. Nola will pitch in the Dodger series. Hopefully Eflin's blister on his pitching hand is better. Or will de Los Santos make another start?

- The ESPYS were on TV last night but I could care less. First it's a bogus awards show, only to promote an over-bloated sports network. The award is meaningless, as proven last night when "The Philly Special" the famous play which will always be remembered from the Eagles' victorious Super Bowl over New England, was ignored as "Play of the Year.  Plus I have boycotted the ESPYS since they named Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner "Most Courageous" athlete several years ago.  Embarrassing!
