- First place Philadelphia Phillies! The Phils overtook Atlanta last night by crushing the Pittsburgh Pirates, 17-5. Kingery had 4 hits, Hoskins collected 3 hits, and Herrera slammed a 399-foot home run in the rout. Pivetta only lasted less than 3 innings again, which must be a concern. The club moved to 11 games over .500 by winning their 4th straight game. The Braves lost in Milwaukee Friday night. They play two more against the brewers while the Philles close out the weekend vs Pittsburgh.
- Reports are that the Phillies are out of the Manny Machado sweepstakes- for now. The Orioles are asking too much in return. I agree with the Phillies here. Why give up prospects if you're not sure that Machado will sign long-term? They must sign him in the off-season, and I think, with all the Baltimore connections, he will ultimately ink a deal with Philadelphia. For the rest of the summer he will go to a contender- like the Dodgers or Diamondbacks- and try to get them over the playoff hump.
Instead, look for the Phillies to investigate Adrian Beltre at third base. Good veteran stopgap. I love the idea of getting Cole Hamels back and moving Vince Valasquez to the bullpen. Another left-handed reliever ( Jake Diekman?) and a right-fielder would be nice. Franco should be traded to San Diego for left-handed reliever Brad Hand.
- Will De Los Snatos, who will pitch in the Futures game in Washington during the All-Star weekend, get a much-deserved start tomorrow in Pittsburgh or during the doubleheader in New York on Monday? Valasquez may be back form the DL on Wednesday against the Mets.
