PHILLY SPORTS CORNER-PHILLIES, NFL NEWS

- The Phillies took care of business Thursday night in Baltimore, winning their make-up game with the Orioles, 5-4. Nick Pivetta pitched 6 2/3 innings of solid baseball. Tommy Hunter again had a shaky outing, while the duo of Ramos and Dominguez finished off the lowly O's.

With the win, the Phils again take over 1st place in NL East, moving 1/2 game ahead of the idle Braves. Washington beat the Mets ( who are now tied for last with Miami), staying 5 1/2 games behind Philadelphia. The Phillies play a 3-game weekend series with the marlins in Miami before heading to the All-Star break.

- The team was again shaky defensively, plus they couldn't tack on runs to put the game away. The Fightins' are 12 games over .500 and in 1st place, despite a bad defense, an inconsistent bullpen and  often not clutch hitting, somehow, someway the team is on top in mid-July? How are they doing it? Starting pitching and positive vibes from the new manager. Nola is awesome. Kapler has the guys believing in themselves. He is an excellent communicator, and despite his early problems in April, he is making solid, baseball-logic decisions, blending with a touch of analytics as well.

- Ex- New York Giants head coach Ben McAdoo had some interesting, if not stupid, comments to the New York Post recently. He said the Eagles may have trouble adjusting to success, hinting the birds may crumble this upcoming season. McAdoo should know. After a rookie season of 11-5 with the G-men, he failed miserably the following year, even benching icon Eli Manning for the nobody named Geno Smith, eventually losing his job. McAdoo is a sore loser.

- Terrill Owens will not show up for his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio in a few weeks. We all know that T.O. was a helluva player. We also know he has always been a weirdo as well, doing and saying controversial things thru out a his career and even now. Why he won't so, no one really knows. He fought hard to get into the Hall, and now that he is finally in, he is acting like a spoiled child by holding a grudge. He is selfish not to allow his family and friends to enjoy the experience.

Even worse, the NFL has decided to not even mention his name during the ceremonies. That's a petty attitude by Pro Football, who should be the bigger entity in this mess. Acknowledge T.O. and all the great things he did on the field, and move on. Don't just ignore his accomplishments, despite the fact he is a jackass. Don't vote him in to begin with if you're going to feel that way.

- Still no word if/when LeSean McCoy will be arrested for any involvement in his ex-girlfriend getting beat up this week in Shady's Georgia home. McCoy denies any involvement. To me, it looks like he sent someone down to Georgia to try and evict his ex-girlfriend from his place, demanding jewelry back, and when she wouldn't return the bling, somebody did a number on her face. Add to that allegations that McCoy also abuse his children and even his dog.

Former Philadelphia DA Seth Williams, currently in prison, isn't around now to get Shady out of trouble. But somehow I have this feeling he is going to weasel out of it. There is no direct proof he was there or that he ordered the beating. If he is involved I'm sure the NFL would suspend his ass, or even ban him from the league, once and for all. If he is cleared can he return to the Buffalo Bills and all is forgiven?

- I think Rhys Hoskins has a good chance to win MLB's Home Run derby on Monday night in Washington. He has a slight uppercut swing to begin with. Of the 7 other competitors, Freddie Freeman is actually the oldest participant. Bryce Harper leads the National league in home runs but is having a bad season overall. No Judge or Stanton competing this time around, which sort of dilutes the Derby. I would bet on Hoskins winning. He did win a Home Run Derby in the minors, participating in the Double AA All-Star festivities, along with teammates Dylan Cozens and Jorge Alfaro.
