- De Los Santos will pitch tonight in New York, making his major league debut. The 22-year-old will pitch in the Futures Game this Sunday in Washington. Can't wait to see him tonight!
- In Game 1 of doubleheader vs the Mets, Phillies were awful again in clutch and moving runners. Andrew Knapp fails late getting a sacrifice bunt down. The Phillies have been horrible at fundamentals since spring training- why improve now?
- So much for saving Zach Eflin for the Mets, with hopes to sweep the doubleheader and bury New York. Instead of pitching on Sunday- his regularly scheduled day to pitch against Pittsburgh, Eflin only went five innings last night.
- I like Dylan Cozens' potential but if he is sent back to Lehigh Valley or traded before the July 31st deadline then it's his own fault. He hasn't played on a regular basis but when he has played, with a chance to make an impression, he has failed. He is 0-7 pinch-hitting. He is a strikeout waiting to happen. Major league pitchers are setting him up with fastballs, only to close him out with slow breaking balls. Maybe he needs a fresh chance to blossom with another organization? I'm not giving up on him- and I hope the Phillies don't- but he just may be a great minor league player who hits tons of homers, only to be exposed on the major league level.
- Game 1 was lost because the Phillies had plenty of chances but couldn't move runners, choked in the clutch and struck-out way too much. Siranthony Dominguez pitched two innings in Game 1 and the team still didn't win. Will he be available tonight? He remains the most reliable bullpen guy and was snubbed form making the All-Star Game.
- Thank God for Aaron Nola! He pitched seven scoreless innings, striking out 10. His record is now 11-2. He pitches this weekend in Miami. If he pitches on Saturday Nola will have shot to pitch in the All-Star Game, If he goes on Sunday against the Marlins, by rule, he can't pitch in the Midsummer classic. He also knocked in the only 3 runs in the second game, ripping a three-run double down the right field line .
- Franco continues to play well, raising his batting average around .270. Looks like the club has given up on Franco in the ling-run. Since he is playing well now his trade value is rising, making the deal with San Diego, for All-Star closer Brad Hand, more realistic.
-With the 3-1 win in the nightcap of the doubleheader, the Phils are now solidly tied with Atlanta for 1st place in NL East. They won their 50th game of the year. Last summer the team didn't win their 50th game until August 31st.
- I'm sick of the Sixers. Let's be real, they never had areal shot at signing LeBron James, no matter what their clueless owner, Joshua Harris, says. The Philly writers are so weak. No one has called coach/GM Brett Brown on not getting the "star" he promised, saying "We are going star-hunting.' Unless the 76ers end up with Kawhi Leonard, the off-season has been, and will be, a failure.
I can't see how the Sixers will even win 52 game again. No Ilaysiva or Bennelli. No Bridges. No star.
- Malcolm Jenkins, Eagles- safety, claims on the last play of the Super Bowl, Tom Brady's Hail Mary pass into the end zone as the clock expired, that the Patriots almost scored a touchdown. Scary close. The Eagles were in the wrong defense. A successful Hail Mary and a two-point conversion put s the game into overtime where anything can happen.
- Yesterday I was in Bloomsburg, pond hunting. Beautiful country! Friendly people! Of course I wore Eagles' gear- an old-school, white Ron Jaworski jersey and a kelly green Birds' cap with the old-fashioned logo. As soon as I met the pond guy he noticed my jersey and asked where my Patriots jersey was. Then the hostess who met us at the door at Denny's informed that she is a Dallas fan. We were hungry so we stayed. She was good-natured, and I gave her the address of this blog. I told her that I've got tix to the Cowboys game this fall ( November 11) and to contact me when the Birds beat the "Boys.
My point is of all the Philly teams, the Eagles get the most reaction. Especially after winning the Super Bowl. With Phillies gear on, occasionally i'll get a comment, like "Go Phils". The Sixers get some reaction, especially with young millennial types. The Flyers get almost no response. But almost every-time i where Eagles' gear, I either get a "Go Birds!" or some mention of the Super Bowl. Or, as was the case on Monday in Bloomsburg, a Cowboy, Giant or Steeler fan will voice their disapproval. It's fun....
