THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY- JUNE 4

The Triple Crown

By winning the Belmont Stakes of 1919, Sir Barton became the first winner of thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown. However, the noble title had not yet been associated with the accomplishment.

The term was made popular by Daily Racing Form reporter Charles Hatton when Gallant Foz matched Sir Barton's feat of sweeping the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes. and the Belmont Stakes in 1930.

In 1935, Gallant Fox would become the only Triple Crown winner to sire a Triple Crown winner with Omaha.
