Summing up the awful weekend in San Francisco. The Phillies get swept by the Giants ( after sweeping SF in early May in Philadelphia), only scoring one lone run all weekend, that being a home run by pitcher Jake Arrieta. The real offense was shut-out for all three games.
- The Phillies don't play small ball- no bunts, no steals, no moving runners, they don't hit in the clutch. Kapler manages like he is in the American League, going for the 3-run homer.
-Carlos Santana- big contract, no hustle.Failing to run yesterday on a bloop hit cost the team a run in the first inning. No excuses.
- I'm tired of Altherr. He is hitting below .200 against right-handed pitchers. So why are all the hitters bad at the same time/ Who is the batting coach? These guys are getting worse, not better.
- Were this crop of players, great in the minors, overrated? Is it poor coaching ? All of this platooning and shifting hurting the consistency of the players? I get it that this team is probably a year away but why are the Braces winning with young talent and the Phils are scuffling/
- What is Klentek doing? What will he do? What has he done?
- Reports out of Baltimore indicate the Phillies, Braves and Indians have expressed interest in Manny Machado. What would it take to get him? The team needs real professional bats in the line-up. Trade for Machado and try to sign him long-term/?
- Meanwhile, reliever Hector Neris, once the closer, continues to be scary. He needs to be released or sent to Lehigh Valley once the injured Pat Neshek is ready to rejoin the club.
- I don't blame Arrieta for being frustrated and angry. He almost needs to be perfect with this pathetic offense. I like his honesty, even though he threw Kapler and Kingery under the bus. Who is accountable? At least someone is telling the truth.
- Why didn't Dylan Cozens play against the right-hander? Play him- can he do any worse?
- Look at the sad averages. The Phillies laid down like dogs this weekend in San Francisco. I'm tired of Kapler's lame excuses. Bench Santana for not hustling. Send a message to the team. Stop with all the shifting nonsense and analytics.
- On to Wrigley Field and Chicago, where the Cubs are playing better ball. Then it's back home for division-leading Milwaukee and Colorado. The Yankees, Cardinals and Nationals also await later this month. It's a brutal stretch, one which will test the Phils and decide if they are contenders or pretenders, and if they will be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline in July.
- Tonight the Phillies pick No. 3 overall in the Major League Baseball draft. One can never have enough pitching, but the farm system seems loaded with arms. so will they go for a power bat?
- I can't believe Bryan Colangelo is still with the Sixers. What's taking so long? The organization is the laughingstock of sports. The NBA draft and free agency are looming. Whether he had the Twitter burner accounts, or it was his wife or son, Colangelo has to go. He can't be trusted.
- Golden State is up 2-0 in their series with Cleveland in the NBA Finals. Good news for the 76ers. I'm sure LeBron will want off the Cavaliers team after this. That's if the Sixers can straighten out their GM situation.
