- Big win for the Phillies last night, who jumped ahead of Washington in NL East for second place. The 12-2 thrashing put the Phils record at 40-33, only 2 1/2 game behind Atlanta ( who lost in 15 innings Friday night to lowly Baltimore).With a win today ( behind Aaron Nola) the team will take 4 straight series.
- Odubel Herrera continues to be scorching-hot, getting 4 hits and clubbing a home run in five consecutive games. His average is back over .300 and the All-Star Game is again in sight. I've ripped Herrera before for not hustling but give the devil his due now. He is hustling, playing well defensively, and offensively he is the hottest player in baseball.
- There are rumors that Texas' Adrian Beltre is headed to the Phillies. Beltre has 3,00 hits and can still hit. He would be a rent-a-player at third base, at least until the team makes a pitch for free agent Manny Machado after the season. Beltre would give you experience and a professional bat in the middle of the batting order.
- Today is the 47th anniversary of Rick Wise' no-hitter against Cincinnati. Wise hit two home runs as well. He retired Pete Rose on the final out, a liner to third baseman John Vuchovich. Wise was traded after the season to St. Louis for Steve Carlton.
- This is a key stretch for the Phillies, playing the Nationals 7 game sin 10 days, with a three-game set against the powerful Yankees in between. Survive these key games and the team sets itself up for an easier schedule in July, and the chance to be buyers before the trade deadline.The Phils catch a break by not seeing either Scherzer or Stroudsberg this weekend.
- The first round of the NHL Draft occurred last night, and the Flyers grabbed a young forward and center. The final seven rounds play out today.
- Aftermath of NBA draft night: Still shocked the Sixers drafted Bridges, only to trade him to Phoenix. The end result of all this wheeling-dealing better be Kawhi Leonard. Bridges is better than Smith. The unprotected 2021 draft pick is still in 8th grade. Reddick needs to be resigned. The team right now doesn't have enough shooters.Free agency starts a week from tomorrow.
