PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, SIXERS

- Embarrassing loss to the Nationals last night at Citizens Bank Park, a 17-7 drubbing. The brutal loss moved the Phillies back to 3 games behind Atlanta for 1st place, as Washington moved to only a game behind Philadelphia. The Nats raced out to an 11-0 lead early as they pounded starter Nick Pivetta for 4 runs in the 1st inning. The Fightins' tried to catch up with a late rally, coming as close as 12-7 before Hector Neris surrendered 5 runs in the top of the 9th to officially put the game out of reach. The teams play Game 3 of their weekend series tonight. Vince Valasquez toes the rubber Saturday night.

- Pivetta is so inconsistent. Strikes out 13 one game, has a brutal effort last night. He hasn't pitched well in a while. With rumors of Cole Hamels returning, and young kids like de Los Santos and Irvin  doing well at Lehigh Valley, plus hopefully the healthy return of Eichoff, Pivetta needs to turn it around quickly or else face another demotion to the Iron Pigs.Bad location with his fastball, and the nationals teed off on Pivetta's fastballs lat night.

- Rhys Hoskins remains red-hot, clubbing his 14th home run to deep center field. He is making a great case to be on his first All-Star team- as Odulbel Herrera slumps. Herrera is too streaky for my taste, and when his timing is off he is really off. Right now, the  batting order is messed-up. When Herrera is slumping as he is now, why is he hitting third/ Why is Carlos Santana batting clean-up  when he mostly walks? Why isn't Hoskins batting 4th?

- Neris needs to be released. Why should the fans  have to endure his lousy pitching? He had another terrible outing Friday night, giving up 5 runs ( including 3 homers) to Washington in one inning. If not released, send him back to Lehigh Valley and keep him there.

There is a supplement of starters at AAA but the best we can do regarding relievers is Neris? GM Klentak needs to get some bullpen help. Pat Neshek should be back soon, but he's not a closer, he's a set-up guy, and only goes an inning at a time. Having at least one more bullpen guy  to stretch the back-end of the 'pen would allow Manager Gabe Kapler to use Siranthony Dominguez as he should- strictly as a 9th inning closer.

- We are at the halfway mark of the season, and it's a delightful surprise to see the Phils overall play well. They are 3 games behind Atlanta and right there for the wild card. It's fun to see the ballpark  fill-up again. Sure, it's Fireworks Night tonight ( a sit was last night), but it brings back a lot of special memories to see the crowds, to scoreboard-watch, to have meaningful baseball again as the All-Star break draws near.

Around baseball, the Yankees and Red Sox play this weekend in New York as they continue to jostle for 1st place. Cleveland is pulling away, as expected, in AL Central. Out west, Houston is starting to take control while Seattle hangs around. Mike Trout and the Angels are fading, as it looks like Trout will go yet another year without making the playoffs, let alone the World Series. Milwaukee is hanging in there in NL Central, with the Cubs always lurking. And after briefly giving up 1st place, Arizona is back in the lead, with the always dangerous Dodgers and Giants looming. Surprisingly, Colorado, which made the wild card last season, is falling well back.

- Sunday starts free agency in the NBA. Teams can start talking to players but can't officially announce signings until Friday, July 6. The fate of Lebron James- and the Sixers- will be decided this week.

The trade rumors involving Kawhi Leonard should also come to a head. Chances are, wherever Leonard goes, James will go too.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES

- The Phillies won a big game last night, taking Game 1 of a 4-game  weekend series vs the Nationals at Citizens Bank Park. Aaron Nola won his 10th game. Siranthony Dominguez saved his 6th game of the season. The team is now sandwiched between the Braves and the Nationals, two games behind Atlanta for 1st place and two games ahead of Washington. Great chance for the Phils to bury the Nats  as the Braves start a brutal 10-game road trip tonight in St. Louis.

- Nola threw 114 pitches but will get an extra day off on Monday. He will pitch against the lowly Orioles on Tuesday night.

- Dominguez is great but if do-nothing GM Matt Klentak doesn't get bullpen help soon, Siranthony will be toast by the end of the summer. Inglesia ( Cincinnati), Hand ( San Diego) and Britton (Baltimore) are closers that should be available. Obviously, Kapler doesn't trust anyone else in that horrible bullpen. Tommy hunter got shelled Thursday night, failing to close a game in which he had a 3-run lead. He has been a free agent bust. Pat Neshek should help soon. But he is strictly a set-up guy, pitching the 7th and 8th innings. Anything to allow Dominguez only pitch one inning- the 9th inning- as a closer.

- Rhys Hoskins continues to be hot since returning from a fractured jaw. He hit his 13th home run of the season, Right now he is flourishing in the No. 2 hole, but I see him as a legitimate clean-up hitter in time. If he stays hot will he make his first All-Star team?

-An old adage in baseball is the team in first place at the All-Star break generally goes onto the World Series. With divisional play it's not as certain. But many years when the Phillies went on to win National League east- including 1976, 1993, 2008, 2009 and 201. the club was on top of the division come All-Star time. So, the next few weeks will be key, as well as what Klentak will do to improve the team going into the July trade deadline. Interestingly enough, the year the Phillies won their first world championship, 1980, the team was not in first place at the All-Star break. In fact, they weren't in first even on September 1st.

As the All-Star break draws near I'll have more information and statistics about being in first place at the break.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, SIXERS

My impressions of the game i attended last night between the Phillies and the Evil Empire, the New York Yankees..

- Sprinkles of rain before the game which stopped as game-time approached. Over 42, 000 attended, not a sell-out like the two previous nights, but still a good crowd.

Huge lines waiting to get into Citizens Bank Park at the left field gate . It was awesome sitting at field level, close to the -New York dugout. Everyone ( mostly Yankee fans) were hoping to rush into the park at 5:00 p.m. to witness batting practice, which has become a nightly ritual with sluggers Stanton and Judge around..   A few long smashes tonight but nothing extraordinary.  Young kids, mostly wearing dark blue, lined the fences and front rows, squealing at the Yanks to hit or toss them balls.

Surprisingly, most Yankees fans I talked to last night weren't the arrogant, pompous, snobby fat annoying jerks I heard they could be. Mets fans are worse. Mets fans are not only obnoxious and rude, dwelling in the low-class, but losers. The one thing i did find in common was a sense of entitlement."We are the great Yankees, We aren't supposed to lose, not to the lowly Phillies ) for the more important Red Sox series this weekend. We are great and your'e not!. Let's save some of our best players ( Sabathia and Judge are prime examples of guys who sat out last night) for the more important series against the Red Sox this weekend. We are the best and your'e not. We have 27 world championship and you don't."

So I was glad the Phils saved face and humbled the Yanks and their fans somewhat. They sat there with glum faces in the 9th inning, disbelieving they were actually going to lose. They bitched and grumbled all the way to the parking lot.

The game itself lacked action except for Rhys Hoskins' 3-run homer in the 2nd inning. That's all the Phillies needed as Zach Eflin threw seven strong scoreless innings and Siranthony Dominguez pitched two perfect innings to earn the save. The Yankees were shut-down but they also didn't seem very motivated. They took 2 of 3 and were now looking forward to getting back to the Bronx this weekend to face the hated Red Sox ( who leapfrogged into 1st place last night).

I overheard Yankee fans thinking they are going to get Cole Hamels this summer, and worse, Mike trout in 3 years. Say it ain't so! Could be be future Phillies instead?

A few New Yorkers wandered into the Majestic Clubhouse store, not buying any Phillies items, but looking. It's fun to browse, as I did at Camden Yards in May when the Phils played the Orioles.

Fun seeing the almost-full stadium. Memories of  the glory years 10 years ago. It can be that way again. Phillies personeel were talking about a possible sell-out Saturday night agains the division-rival Nationals.

Apparently Bryce Harper was at the game last night. Washington was off and flew up form Tampa. Harper was cited at the game. Maybe seeing such a big crowd at CBP ( half were New York fans) will interest Harper into what he may be able to do if he signed with Philly atfer the season.

I saw both Eagles GM Howie Rossman and Howard Eskin on the field before the game, getting autographs from Yankee  slugger Aaron Judge. In fact Judge spent a good 15-20 minutes signing for kids along the left field line, where mostly Yankee fans hung out.

Ez-Phillie Jayson Werth retired yesterday. He was a solid player. he played 4 years for the Phils, and all 4 years the club won the national League East. He took the money and ran to Washington, but was not able to bring them the promised glory of a championship. He had power, could run and possessed a tremendous arm, Plus Werth always hustled. The Phils were never the same after he signed with the Nationals.

Speaking of Hamels, dealing Jake Arrieta to Texas for Hamels wouldn't be a bad deal. The Rangers would never do it, as they are in last place in AL West and will be looking to dump salary soon. Arrieta has been disappointing so far. Hamels loves Philly, and even though he is older, still has good stuff. He's also the lefty the rotation needs. Hamels would also be a veteran leader and mentor to the young hurlers on the staff. Something worth thinking about...

With the victory Philadelphia moves to 2 1/2 games behind Atlanta, a full game ahead of Washington. They play 4 at home vs the Nats starting tonight. While the Phillies have an easier schedule ahead, with the likes of the Orioles, reds, Pirates and Marlins coming up in July, the Braves go on a 10-game road trip, a brutal one at that, playing the Cardinals, Yankees and Brewers on the road. A great chance to make up ground before the July trade deadline.

 - LeBron James must tell the Cavaliers by tomorrow if he will return to Cleveland or officially become a free agent on July 1.   The Sixers continue to talk about getting Leonard from San Antonio. The Bridges draft night trade makes little sense with Leonard as the end result.  James may follow suit, but Leonard needs to come first. So, by this time next week we should know if the 76ers will be a better team this season and if they are serious contenders for a championship.

IN THE NEWS- NEW YORK WOMAN IS NATION'S FIRST LOBBYIST WITH DOWN SYNDROME

Another excellent article from Disability Scoop..

As the first registered Capitol Hill lobbyist with Down syndrome, Kayla McKeon speaks with powerful credibility when working to change laws that limit career opportunities for people with disabilities.

"I like being able to share my story and my experience to members of the Senate and congressmen and women," McKeon said. "I like telling them about my abilities and how they can help us and pass these laws. It's hard for them to say no to a self-advocate."

McKeon, 30, who works for the National Down Syndrome Society, has already helped achieve passage of the ABLE to Work Act, which allows employees with disabilities to save more money without losing their Medicaid or Social Security benefits. She's now working to eliminate subminimum wage, which pays workers with disabilities as little as pennies per hour.

"Down syndrome doesn't hold us back, it's old, antiquated laws that do," McKeon said. "We also want the same pay and benefits as everyone else because we are like everyone ."

In October, McKeon began working part-time at the nonprofit, where 25 percent of employees have Down syndrome. She lives with her parents in Syracuse, N.Y. and flies to Washington or New York City several times a month.

She has met with elected officials ranging from U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., to Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill. The hardest part of her job is getting on the calendars of busy lawmakers who may need to reschedule if they are called to the floor, McKeon said.

"I am nonpartisan and bipartisan," McKeon said.

Sara Hart Weir, president and CEO of the National Down Syndrome Society, said McKeon's position was created as part of a strategic process to hire more people with Down syndrome. Weir said McKeon has a passion for advocacy and exemplifies achievement.

"She is fun, spunky and loves life," Weir said. "She's quick for a jaunt across the street to Starbucks with you, a trip to the shopping mall, happy hour or just hanging out with her colleagues and friends."

McKeon's work has been noticed by others advocating on behalf of people with disabilities. Stuart Spielman, senior policy adviser and counsel for Autism Speaks, said McKeon is positive and well prepared as she weaves together policy with personal experience.

"It has been wonderful getting to work with Kayla," Spielman said. "She is an asset to NDSS and a great advocate for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities on Capitol Hill. We are lucky to have the opportunity to work alongside her/"

McKeon's mother, Patti McKeon, said her daughter is well suited to he rrole because of her social graces and ability to talk to anyone without feeling nervous.

"She's gained a lot of independence doing this," Patti McKeon said. "She travels on her own. Her father and I are just so proud of her. I see the people she talks to and I'm, like, wow."

McKeon, who also attends community college, said people with disabilities should not have their dreams squashed.

"We can do anything that we set our minds to," she said. "We go to college, we drive a car, we can pursue relationships. We can work. Let us be who we are."

DAILY PHILLIES TRIVIA

Who is the last Phillies outfielder to lead the league in assists?

Pat Burrell ( 18 assists in 2001).

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES

-The Yankees are totally dominating the Phillies during this series. Even the New York fans are louder. The Phillies need to win tonight to save face. The Phils are better this season, but stacked up against a really good club like the Yanks, we are second-rate.  The Phillies will use the excuse that they are improved and they have "young players.' But the Yankees are young too. They simply have better young players.

- I know Hernandez' error was a killer last night, can we still trade Arrieta to Texas for Cole Hamels? I was all for the Arrieta signing but now it looks like a mistake. He's certainly not worth the $30 million he is making this season.Even if he was being paid $3 million this year, he has still been mediocre at best.

- Kapler is delusional if he thinks the Phillies' talent is equal to the Yankees. I'm all for being positive and encouraging your players. It's another thing to keep it real and be honest.

- Granted the team is improved but Klentak still needs to take blame for the many holes on the current roster. His free agent signings, trades, drafting and the way he has constructed his line-up ( guys playing out of position) are sorely lacking. Scared and incompetent.

- Severino was overwhelming last night, averaging 98 mph on his fastball even late in the game. Scary to think he is only 23-years-old.

- I'll be at the game tonight and would bet on the Phillies is sports betting available in Pennsylvania.I think they have too much pride to get swept at home, plus New York is starting a so-so hurler tonight. Zach Eflin goes tonight for the Phils. He tries for his fifth straight victory.

- Batting practice was awesome last night for the Bronx Bombers. Judge apparently crushed a ball onto Ashburn Alley, while Stanton drilled a ball out of left field , past the scoreboard and onto Ashburn Alley. I'm looking forward to batting practice tonight almost as much as sitting field level for the game. Hopefully it doesn't rain!

- Yankees fans have taken over Citizens Bank Park this week. In reality, it's the Phillies' fans fault. Phillies season ticket holders sold their seats for profit, which is fine, only other Phillies' fans aren't buying the tickets- New Yorkers are. It's nice to see a jam-packed ballpark ( like the old days), but hard to see half of the stadium wearing black instead of red.

IN THE NEWS- FDA APPROVES MARIJUANA-BASED DRUG TO TREAT SEVERE EPILEPSY

From Disability Scoop..

The Food and Drug Administration is approving a marijuana-based medication to treat two rare seizure conditions associated with developmental issues.

The government agency gave the green light this week to an oral solution called Epidiolex to treat Lennox-Gastaut and Dravet syndrome in those ages 2 and up.

The drug contains cannagidiol, or CBD, a substance derived from marijuana, but causes no intoxication, euphoria or "high," the FDA said. This is the first time the agency has approved a medication with an active ingredient that comes from marijuana.

Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome are both rare conditions that develop in childhood involving frequent seizures. The FDA said Epidiolex was tested in three clinical trials involving  516 people with the syndromes and was found to be effective at reducing the frequency of seizures better than a placebo when taken in conjunction with other medications.

"This approval serves as a reminder that advancing sound development programs that properly evaluate active ingredients contained in marijuana can lead to important medical therapies," said FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb.

Dravet syndrome typically becomes apparent the first year of life and is marked by frequent seizures as well as weak language and motor skills, hyperactivity and social difficulties.

Meanwhile, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome often emerges between ages 3 and 5.  Those with the condition have frequent seizures and nearly all develop learning issues and intellectual disability.

"The difficult-to-control seizures that patients with Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome experience have a profound impact on these patients' quality of life," said Billy Dunn, director of the Division of Neurology Products in the FDA's  Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. "In addition to another important treatment option for Lennox-Gastaut patients, this first-ever approval of a drug specifically for Dravet patients will provide a significant and needed improvement in the therapeutic approach to caring for people with this condition."

For years, families of children with severe seizure issues have been turning to marijuana-based substances to find relief from debilitating episodes, often skirting the law to obtain what they said was their only effective treatment option. More recently, some families have moved to states that have legalized marijuana in order to gain regular access.

The FDA took pains to specify that clearing Epidiolex for use is not an approval of marijuana or any of its components.

The agency will continue to support research on potential medical uses of the drug, but is "prepared to take action when we see the illegal marketing of CBD- containing products with serious, unproven medical claims," Gottlieb said.

College World Series History

"I guess playing in the first two College World Series games also stands out as being special. We had a wonderful coach in Ethan Allen and some terrific pitching in Frank Quinn and Walt Gratham. I can't say I contributed much on offense, but it was a heck of a ride nonetheless."

- George H. Bush (Yale 1B)

On this date in 1948, USC beats Yale 9-2 to win the best of three College World Series 2 games to 1.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, SIXERS, EAGLES

- The Phillies were out-classed last nigh tin their loss to the Yankees. Simply put, the Yankee stars showed up and the Phillies' stars didn't.  The park was sold-out for the first time in a long time. Did the team shrink in the spotlight of playing the Evil Empire or are the Yanks- the best team in baseball- just too good?

- Speaking of which, Citizens Bank Park was filled with New Yorkers. Phillies management had to be please to have over 44,000 people in-house. Sure, it would be nice if most of those fans were wearing red, like the old days. That will return someday. For now, half of the stadium was wearing blue for the Yanks. That's just the way it is. The Phillies need to save face by winning the next two nights. Payback for 1950, Payback for 2008. The Pihllies need to  stop being second-rate to the vaunted Yankees.

- Meanwhile, Rhys Hoskins delayed in running out a dropped third strike and heard about it from fans behind the Phils dugout.  He started jawing with one fan, which he later admitted was a mistake. Hoskins is a class act. He lost focus and was frustrated by striking out with runners on base. Hoskins doesn't want to become a target of our fanbase. He did admit his mistake and hopefully everyone will move on.

- Vince Valasquez pitched another good game, only to come up on the short end of the tally. Pitching Adam Morgan in a key situation in the 8th inning was a mistake. I don't trust Morgan ( as well as most of those relief pitchers in the lousy bullpen). Once again GM Klentak needs to make a move to help the bullpen, sooner rather than later.

- My question was answered this morning in the daily email Extra Innings. Are the Franco to San Diego trade rumors true?  turns out the Padres are interested in Franco. Would they trade closer Brad Hand in return? Trading Franco would leave a void at third base. Would the Phillies deal for future hall of Famer Adrian Beltre to fill in for a few months?  Could Klentak pull off multiple deals at the same time?

- The Phillies have been winning series lately by taking the first game. Losing last night hurts, as now the Phillies need to win tonight and tomorrow to win this series. Arrieta vs Severino is a great match-up tonight. Zach Eflin, who has won four games in a row, starts Wednesday night in the finale.

- Ben Simmons was named Rookie of the Year last night. He deserves it. Once he learns how to shoot he will be a perennial All-Star. Carson Wentz was named the No. 3 player in the NFL  by the NFL Network.

- I'll be at the Phillies-Yankees game Wednesday night. Follow me on Twitter @ WheelinGreg for updates. I'll be sitting  alongside the New York dugout on the third base side. I may be the only fan wearing red on that side of the field, especially if the Yankee fans dominant as they did last night.

DAILY PHILLIES TRIVIA

Which Phillies pitcher had the most games in a single season for the Phillies?

Answer: Kent Tekulve ( 90 games in 1987).

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES

- Although the Phillies won the series in Washington over the weekend, and picked up a game on both the Nationals and Braves, they blew a chance to distance themselves from the Nats. A 6-2 lead evaporated  after starter Nick Pivetta   left the game. The bullpen coughed up six runs in three innings. The bullpen continues to be a weak spot. GM Matt Klentak needs to make some moves an bolster the 'pen soon.

- Strong rumors persist that the Padres are interested in Maikel Franco. Good! Drive him to San Diego to be with former Phillies' hitting coach Matt Stairs. Bullpen help in return ( specifically closer Brad Hand)would be welcome. Deal for Adrian Beltre of Texas to fill third base for the res tof the year.Grab  Cole Hamels, who has been pitching better lately, to give the team an inexperienced lefty starter for this year and beyond. Hamels would also be another valuable mentor for the young pitchers.

- Frustrating losses this year, like last night, but think of it- at least we are talking Phillies baseball, unlike past summers. They are in the Wild Card hunt, and still only 2 games in the loss column behind  NL East division-leading Atlanta. We wanted a competitive team, some hope, something to root for- and we have it. The players are young and emerging. There's a lot to look forward to.  They are usually entertaining and fun to watch. Who can ask for more?

- Some are questioning Gabe Kapler's move in the 8th inning of intentionally walking rookie Juan Soto and pitching to veteran and three-time All-Star Daniel Murphy with the bases loaded. Murphy got a single off Siranthony Dominguez and give Washington the lead. Who would you rather pitch to in a big spot- the 19-year-old, red-hot rookie or an establish hitter who is just coming off an injury? It turned out to be a mistake. Would Soto have been able to handle the pressure? Would Murphy catch up to a Siranthony 100 m.p.h. fastball?

As it turned out, the key single wasn't off a blazing fastball but on a slider ( which Dominguez actually considers his best pitch). I can't really blame Kapler too much for the decision. I can't blame him for the state of the awful bullpen either. He is working with what Klentak has given him.

- Sell-out tonight at the ballpark? The Yankees are in town. It should be a beautiful summer night. Kids are out of school. Phillies are playing well. no excuses not to have a big crowd. I'm sure herds of New York fans will venture down the turnpike. but will there be more red than black in the stands for the next three nights? Perfect weather for the Yankee series. The Phillies go for five straight series wins before the Nationals come to town for the upcoming weekend.

- The team was much more aggressive on the base paths last night, which is good. Go for the big inning but don't shy away from the steal a,d making things happen. Stay aggressive and take the game to the opponent! Their aggressiveness probably cost them a run during the game when Kingery single, was caught stealing, then Knapp doubled in the gap. Make it to second or don't try to steal and Kingery makes it home easily. But again I like the aggressiveness, so hopefully Kapler doesn't stop playing  small ball.

The Stimpmeter

The Stimpmeter was designed in 1935 by golfer Edward S. Stimpson, Sr. (1904-1985). A Massachusetts state amateur champion and former Harvard golf team captain, Stimpson was a spectator at the 1935 U.S. Open at Oakmont, where the winning score was 299 (+11).

After witnessing a putt by the great Gene Sarazen roll off the green,  Stimpson was intrigued about the speed of the greens and was sure they were unreasonably fast, but wondered how he could prove it. He soon developed a device made of wood, now known as the Stimpmeter, which is an angled track that releases a ball at a known velocity so that the distance it rolls on a green's surface can be measured.

PHILLIES PHODDER

- Perhaps the biggest game of the Phillies season is on tap tonight. Win and they sweep the powerful Nationals in Washington and have a 4-game winning streak going into the Yankees series.Win and they are 2 1/2 games ahead of the Nats instead of a mere 1/2 game. Win and it gives Washington something to think about and puts the pressure on them going into next weekend's big 4-game series against Washington at Citizens Bank Park.  Win, and if the braves lose to the Orioles again this afternoon, pull to only 1/2 game out of the lead in National League East.

- The team has a different hero each game. Franco gets 4 hits on Saturday in the 5-3 win. Dominguez closes the 9th as he should with a pair of strikeouts in the 1-2-3 inning. Santana hits another home run. Even though Herrera did not homer for the first time in six games, the offense still added on and kept ahead of the Nats.

- With the victory, the Phillies move to 41-33, which happens to be the exact score- 41-33- of the Eagles' Super Bowl win. An omen?

-The Phils have been fortunate not to face either Scherzer or Stroudsberg this weekend. Next week will be a different story. This weekend is breeding more confidence in the Fightins. If they have a good series vs New York going into the crucial Washington set, the club should be cruising. Coming out of this tough stretch in June, to face am easier schedule in July ( Orioles, Reds, Pirates and Marlins are just a few of the team they will battle in July) should also breed confidence and tell GM Klentak that he needs to be a buyer, not a seller at the trade deadline.

- First round draft pick, third baseman Alec Bohm, is on fire in the Florida rookie league. It will be interesting to see how quickly he moves thru the farm system, on his way to Philadelphia.

- You know the Phillies are relevant again, for the first time in a long time, when they are on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball. With a nationwide audience it would be great if young players such as Herrera, Hoskins and Kingery especially to have big games. For Odubel, a good game tonight in front of a large viewership may help him get some votes in the upcoming All-Star Game.

- The evil empire, the new York Yankees, invade the ballpark Monday-Wednesday. Their arrogant fans will try and take over, as always. The Yanks haven't visited Philly in 9 years. It will be payback time for the 1950 and 2009 World Series. Since New York currently has the best record in baseball, a series sweep or win would go a long way in showing the Phils that they can play with anyone. Don't be intimidated by the  Bronx Bombers and their antics and history and 27 World Championships. Just do what you are always do. Play sound defense, get clutch hits, have quality pitching and play relaxed. They are only the Yankees.

CONCERT REVIEW- HAPPY TOGETHER TOUR

- Lots of fun memories last night at the American Music Theater in Lancaster  seeing the Happy Together Tour- six bands from the 60s.

The Lancaster theater is beautiful and extremely accessible. The show was sold-out. Age group was mostly older adults, 60 and higher. Did see a few kids there, probably parents or grandparents trying to teach the youngsters what "good music" is all about ( unlike the horrible rap of today).

The first band to appear was the Cowsills. I expected the least from the  Cowsills, but they were energetic and fun. Best song of their five-song set was the finale, "Hair."  Still have great harmonies.  Hard to believe they were only kids when they became famous ( the model for The Partridge Family). Susan Cowsill still is cute, with her bellbottom jeans. The two remaining guys have gray hair  (or no hair at all). Other then the "knee replacements" they seem fairly healthy- unlike others on the bill.

Second up was Mark Lindsey from the band Paul Revere and the Raiders. Again more energy. Out of his five songs I knew four. Surprised to find out that "Indian Reservation" was Columbia Records highest-selling single until Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean." "Kicks" was the best song, as Lindsey donned his old light blue  colonial jacket ( maybe the original?).

Closing the first act was The Association. Only three members of the group survive. Their harmonies were OK for guys in their 70s. Their songs are timeless love songs, such as "Windy.". "Cherish", and "Never My Love." They were funny and down-to earth , mentioning that it's a "humbling experience" to bring in their merchandise- cds, pictures, books- to sell in the lobby, but even more humbling to drag it back into the trucks afterwards.

A brief 20 minute intermission followed- for both the acts and the audience, as the music was coming fast and furious.

Act II began with the silky-smooth voice of Gary Puckett ( minus The Union Gap). Well, used to be silky-smooth. Puckett's voice isn't what it used to be as he strained to hit notes. But like everyone in the show, he's earnest, friendly, humble and tries hard to please. His mellow songs are impressive when listed- "Lady Willpower", " Woman, Woman." "Young Girl", among others.

One touching moment was when Puckett recognized a fan sitting on the side of the first row, a girl in a wheelchair. He stepped off the stage after the first song, went over to the girl, said a few words and hugged her, then returned to the stage- all without missing a beat. After his set was over, Puckett was seen again giving her one last hug before departing off-stage. Classy move! First time I've ever seen an entertainer not just acknowledge a fan, but actually leave the stage for a moment to said hello in a very personal, special way.

Chuck Negron from Three Dog Night rocked. He looked in good shape, one of the few  still with dark hair. Looking closer, Negron had an oxygen tube running form his nose down his back and off-stage. A product of a really rough lifestyle- sex, drugs and rock n' roll- plus who knows what else?In fact, Negron commented "If I had known I was gonna live so long i would've taken care of myself better."

His was an energetic set, featuring "Eli's Coming", " Mama Told Me Not To Come", "One ( is the Loneliest Number)" and the rip-roaring closer "Joy To The World." Negron tried some humor and small talk in-between each song, probably to give himself a break, and he finally ventured away from the mic stand during the final tune.

Last but not least were The Turtles. Only there was a lone Turtle. Mark did not make the tour, battling hear problems and back issues. Flo was there, but his voice is pretty well shot and he appears white and pasty from a fight against cancer ( which he claims he has won). Filling in was the youthful-looking, fun Ron Dante, lead singer of the cartoon band The Archies and successful producer of early Barry Manilow albums.

Great songs like "She'd Rather be With Me", "You Showed Me", "It Ain't me Babe"< "Elenore" and the classic "Happy Together " followed.  Dante sang his hear tout and the vocals closely resembled those on record.

The grand finale was a brief snippet of songs from each artist, as everyone joined The Turtles on stage.  Magical moment, seeing all that talent and sharing all those memories together at the same time.

Videos accompanied each artist on large screens and the back-up band was great, seasoned session musicians.

All in all, it was a really fun 3 hours of nostalgia and great music, the likes we will never hear again. One wonders how long the happy Together tour will go now, with the Turtles' health poor. Hopefully someone will pick up the ball and continue the special show. On the whole, acts from the 60s can't go on forever, so cherish the concept as long as you can- the original artists singing their original classic songs every summer.

DAILY PHIULLIES TRIVIA

On September 4, 199, what team set a record by hitting 9 home runs against the Phillies?

Answer: Cincinnati Reds

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, FLYERS, SIXERS

- Big win for the Phillies last night, who jumped ahead of Washington in NL East for second place. The 12-2 thrashing put the Phils record at 40-33, only 2 1/2 game behind Atlanta ( who lost in 15 innings Friday night to lowly Baltimore). With a win today ( behind Aaron Nola) the team will take 4 straight series.

- Odubel Herrera continues to be scorching-hot, getting 4 hits and clubbing a home run in five consecutive games. His average is back over .300 and the All-Star Game is again in sight. I've ripped Herrera before for not hustling but give the devil his due now. He is hustling, playing well defensively, and offensively  he is the hottest player in baseball.

- There are rumors that Texas' Adrian Beltre is headed to the Phillies. Beltre has 3,00 hits and can still hit. He would be a rent-a-player at third base, at least until the team makes a pitch for free agent Manny Machado after the season. Beltre would give you experience and a professional bat in the middle of the batting order.

- Today is the 47th anniversary of Rick Wise' no-hitter against Cincinnati. Wise hit two home runs as well. He retired Pete Rose on the final out, a liner to third baseman John Vuchovich. Wise was traded after the season  to St. Louis for Steve Carlton.

- This is a key stretch for the Phillies, playing the Nationals 7 game sin 10 days, with a three-game set against the powerful Yankees in between. Survive these key games and the team sets itself up for an easier schedule in July, and the chance to be buyers before the trade deadline. The Phils catch a break by not seeing either Scherzer or Stroudsberg this weekend.

- The first round of the NHL Draft occurred last night, and the Flyers grabbed a young forward and center. The final seven rounds play out today.

- Aftermath of NBA draft night: Still shocked the Sixers drafted Bridges, only to trade him to Phoenix. The end result of all this wheeling-dealing better be Kawhi Leonard. Bridges is better than Smith. The unprotected 2021 draft pick is still in 8th grade. Reddick needs to be resigned. The team right now doesn't have enough shooters.Free agency starts a week from tomorrow.

#37, My Hero

35 years ago this weekend, the sports world mourned the death of Kansas City Chiefs running back Joe Delaney, who lost his life when he attempted to save three young boys who were drowning in a pond at Chennault Park in Monroe, Louisiana. The former All-American at Northwestern State was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1997.

DAILY PHILLIES TRIVIA

Greg Gross is the all-time leader in pinch-hits for the Phillies ( 117 pinch-hits) Who is second on the list?

Answer: Tony Taylor ( 54 pinch-hits)

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- SIXERS, PHILLIES, FLYERS

- Shame for Makil Bridges. Drafted by the Sixers, the Great Valley product elated he will be staying home to play pro basketball, his mother, who works in the Human Resources office at the Sixers, weeping- and in an instant he is traded to Phoenix. Shouldn't someone had stopped his press conference? The Sixers organization had to know another deal was going down. Why allow Brifges pour his hear tout about how grateful and blessed he was to stay in Philly, all the while he was actually headed to Phoenix.

Bridges seemed to be the perfect fit for this 76er squad. Plays tough defense, can shoot, a local kid who is thrilled with staying with the local team. When Kevin Knox was taken by the Knicks at No. 9, just ahead of Philadelphia, it seemed all but certain that Bridges would fall into our laps. It was fate, destiny, it was meant to be.

Just like that, Bridges was sent to the Suns, who picked at No. 16 Zhaire Smith, a guard, and a No. 1 draft pick ) via Miami) in 2021. Yes, three years from now.

Isn't Bridges a better player than Smith? The 2021 pick is unprotected but who knows where it was fall. The best scenario is that Brett Brown, who made the final decision on the trade, since the  Sixers are lacking a general manager, trades his new-found assets, plus maybe Markelle Fultz, for San Antonio's Kawi Leonard.  Otherwise, to me, the deal is a bust.

There was a Bridges draft night viewing party in Exton, Pa.  for fans of Bridges who followed him at Great Valley and Villanova. Imagine the jubilation when he was selected and the unbelievable despair when it was announced he really wasn't a Sixer.

At 26 the team took another guard named Landry Shamut. The big story was the Bridges drama. Bridges should have a real chip on his shoulder when the Suns come to town. The perfect selection doesn't make any sense unless there is another shoe about to drop.  Brown will soon look like a genius or a dope.

With the draft over, it's time now to focus on free agency. If July turns out to be as surprising as June, it will be an interesting summer.

- The Phillies were off last night. Washington won, so they moved to 1/2 game ahead of the Phils for second place in NL East. The team sent down pitcher Jake Thompson, again proving how ridiculous their bullpen strategy is. Thompson won and saved games  this week. yet he is being sent back to Lehigh Valley, the same guy Kapler trusted late in games?

So far, this confusion, for the most part, is working. Sooner or later Kapler will get burned badly from not having a true closer and set-guy with defined roles.

- The club starts a weekend series with the Nationals in D.C. tonight. Luckily, the Phillies will avoid Max Scherzer, who pitched yesterday vs the Orioles.Eflin, Nola and Pivetta pitch this weekend in Washington.

- The Flyers' schedule was released yesterday. They start on the road again, playing the Western Conference champion Vegas Golden Knights and Colorado Avalance.. In fact, they face Vegas two times in the early-going, including a Saturday afternoon tilt in October.

I'm eyeing Saturday afternoon, November 17 vs Tampa Bay  as my annual Flyers game. Maybe the Sixers will play at night, as they did last year, and we can make it a doubleheader?

The Brown Bomber

"Tonight I not only fight the battle of my life to revenge the lone blot on my record, but I fight for America against the challenge of a foreign invader, Max Schmeling. This isn't just one man against another or Joe Louis boxing Max Schmeling; it is good old U.S.A. versus Germany."

- Joe Louis

Eighty years ago tonight, Champion Joe Louis knocked out challenger Max Schmeling in 124 seconds. Louis avenged a 1936 defeat to Schmeling, the only bout he lost between 1934 and 1949.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES

- The Phillies won their third straight series, taking 2 of 3 from St. Louis. Each game was back and forth, tight-fisted affairs. A wild card preview? With the 4-3 victory on Wednesday afternoon, the Phillies are tied for second place with Washington, 3 1/2 games behind division-leading Atlanta.  The Phils battle the Nationals this weekend in D. C.

The Phillies have won 39 games. They didn't win their 39th game until July 31 last season.

- Odubel Herrera is red-hot, homering in four straight games and five out of six. Herrera is again playing like an All-Star. both offensively and defensively. Not too late for Herrera to make the team as a write-in or extra. Aaron Nola should be the other Phillie All-Star.

Herrera is the first Phillie center fielder to hit home runs in four consecutive games.

- Gabe Kapler may be just plain lucky. He used Adam Morgan as a closer on Wednesday against the Redbirds. Despite the fans' and media criticism about how he has used his bullpen, Kapler is doing it his way and succeeding. He has no real designated closer, or set-up guy for that matter.

- Siranthony Dominguez is human. He gave up a 9th inning home run to Cardinal Matt Carpenter on Tuesday night to lose the game. I would still want Dominguez to be the one inning, 9th inning closer if Kapler designates one. Both Kapler and Klentak feel it's OK to use Dominguez early in the game to thwart a potential rally then as a closer. Pat Neshek should be back soon, giving Kapler another bullpen option.

Trading for an established closer is also possible. The Nats recently obtained closer Kelvin Herrera from Kansas City.If the price is right why shouldn't Klentak investigate a Zach Britton form the Orioles, and use Siranthony is the 8th inning?

- With J.P. Crawford out 4-6 weeks with a fractured hand, Mitch Walding was recalled from Lehigh Valley. So far, Walding has seven major league at-bats. He has struck out all seven times. Isn't he nearing a record?

IN THE NEWS-DOWN SYNDROME REALITY SHOW RETURNS WITH WEDDING ON TAP

From Disability Scoop..

A wedding is on the horizon when a reality television show following the lives of adults with Down syndrome comes back later this summer.

A&E Network said this week that the documentary series "Born This Way" will debut its fourth season Aug. 15.

The eight-episode run will lead up to the wedding of Cristina and Angel, following the couple as they work through disagreements  over their big day and exploring their parents' concerns for the future.

In addition to the impending nuptials, the upcoming season will see individuals with Down syndrome pursuing driver's licenses, independent living and entrepreneurship while other romances blossom as well, the network said.

The show, which is produced by the people behind reality television stalwarts like "The Real World" and "Keeping up with the Kardashians," won an Emmy in 2016 for Outstanding unstructured Reality Series and received the 2018 Critics' choice Award for Best Unstructured Reality Series.

Two episodes of "Born this Way"will air back-to-back on four consecutive Wednesdays starting at 8 p.m. ET.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES

It was my first time at the ballpark last night, Game 1 of six this summer. Exciting, interesting, frustrating game. If you are reading this, you must be a sports fan, so you know the details of the Phillies' first walk-off win of 2018, a 6-5 victory in 10 innings. The following are my thoughts on the game and my first trip this season to Citizens Bank Park.

- Great that the Phillies pulled out the win. Shame for Nick Pivetta, who pitched brilliantly ( 7.2/3 innings, 2 runs, 13 strikeouts) that he got a no-decision.  I saw Pivetta pitch in Baltimore in may, when he struck out 11 Orioles, so I've seen two Pivetta masterpieces so far.

- If you pitch Siranthony Dominguez more than just one inning, as a closer, you may not be able to use him the next game. Hence last night. If Dominguez is used the correct way over the weekend in Milwaukee, he closes last night vs. St Louis and possibly the drama doesn't occur in the 9th and 10th innings.

So, if you are not going to use Dominguez as a closer, get one. The Nationals got a closer yesterday from the Royals.  Why can't Matt Klentak call Baltimore for Britton or Cincinnati for Inglesia ? I can't take Adam Morgan or Jake Thompson trying to save games anymore.

- Again, too many strikeouts, on both sides. 27 total. Stupid. Close to a 4 hour game, even with 10 innings.

- 22,000 at the ballpark on Monday night on a hot, steamy night. Kids are now out of school. Should there be more? It was Game of Thrones Night. The Phillies threw a Beach bash before the game near Bull's Bar-B-Que. The announcers attended and several players' wives and kids.

- I like the improvements at the ballpark. The Kid's Fun Zone, including "The Yard" a replica whiffle ball field resembling Citizens Bank Park, is well done. The concourse seems wider and less cluttered. There are numerous charging stations for cell phones. The sound system is clearer. The field looks great. I'm wondering what improvements are coming up next season?

- The Phillies' poor defense reared it's ugly head again in the 9th inning, as catcher Andrew Knapp failed to block a third strike, third out in the dirt, keeping the inning alive for a St. Louis comeback. Phillies catchers are the worst defensively in baseball.

- There was a loud and vocal bunch of Redbird fans sitting behind the St. Louis dugout. Midwesterners are nice and tame, not rude and obnoxious like met fans. Still, visiting teams' fans try to take over the park, and sometimes are louder than the few Phillies' fans left at the end of games. I'll be at the Yankee game next Wednesday and I'm sure a flock of New Yorkers will make the trek down the turnpike. Then again, I can't talk. Phillies' fans took over Camden Yards in Baltimore in May, so I can finally relate.

- With the win, the Phillies are now 38-32, tied for second place with slumping Washington. It was the third straight win for Philadelphia, who are now 3 1/2 games behind idle Atlanta. The Braves play two in Toronto before facing last place Baltimore and Cincinnati at home.Atlanta goes to St. Louis and New York to take on the Yankees after that.   Meanwhile, the Nationals played the lowly Rays before  hosting the Phillies this weekend.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, SIXERS, BASEBALL

Manager Gabe Kapler must be a lucky guy. Doe he play the lottery or go to the casinos? If not, he should. He was really lucky this weekend in Milwaukee. Kapler made several questionable calls  that somehow, someway turned out OK as the Phillies won of 2 of 3 games over the brewers, who have the best record in the National League.

On Saturday, Kapler took a  dominant Zach Eflin out of the game in the 6th inning of a close game. He pitched reliable reliever Sirantohny Dominguez as a set-up guy, not as a closer, in each game. He boxed himself in on Sunday, and was forced to sue Jake Thompson, just recalled from Lehigh Valley, to get the final out vs the always- dangerous Christian Yelich ( Yelich crushed the first pitch from Thompson to dead center field, where Odubel Herrera made a nice catch to save the game).

With a five-run lead in the 9th inning on Sunday, Kapler stuck with the shaky Hector Neris, who promptly gave up four runs before being lifted for Thompson. Neris is a waste who should be released ( Dylan Cozens should be an extra bat/outfielder off the bench, not a  ridiculous 13th pitcher off the staff like Neris).

What's so hard about pitching Dominguez one inning, not two? In the 9th inning, not the 7th inning? And, as a closer, not as a set-up guy? If/when Pat Neshek comes off the DL and finally pitches a game, he should be the set-up man and Dominguez the closer. Stop playing Russian Roulette with the bullpen! I've seen enough of losers like Neris, Morgan, Ramos, Rios and Garcia. They couldn't do it before. Why does Kapler feel they can suddenly close now?

Despite all of this confusion, the Phillies are in third place, only a 1/2 game behind Washington ( who they play seven time sin the next two weeks), and still 4 games behind division-leading Atlanta, 5 games above .500.

All of this analytical  nonsense is coming from the front office, specifically GM Matt Klentak, who is directing Kapler's unorthodox moves. The next few weeks will tell if the team will be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline in late July. Buyers could nab a Cole Hamels and a lefty reliever. Sellers would be embarrassing  and mean the end for Santana, Franco and maybe even Hernandez.Sellers would also mean Klentak should be fired at the end of the season.

Hopefully Hoskins and Herrera are slowly coming out of their hitting funks. Franco is in desperation mode to save his Phillies career at third base, especially with potential free agent Manny Machado looming. With the hotter weather on tap, will the bats get hotter too?

Defensively the Phils are still poor, and will remain poor until players stop playing out of position in the field. Look forward to more lapses on defense, as in order to get guys into their natural positions ( Kingery to second base, Hoskins to first base, etc...) trades need to be made, and they will take time.

The pitching will be boosted by reinforcements such as Hamels and Neshek, so I think the pitching will continue to be strong. As long as you've got good pitching, the club should be in it til September.

- I'll be at Citizens Bank Park tonight as the Phils open a three-game series against the always-tough St. Louis Cardinals. Nick Pivetta goes for the Fightins. I saw Pivetta pitch brilliantly in Baltimore over a month ago. It's my first time at the ballpark this season so I'll be anxious to see all the new changes. It will be a hot and steamy night, maybe good for the bats?

- Iv'e got a bad feeling that the Sixers will get shut-out this summer in the free agency market. Will LeBron go to LA, along with George and Leonard? Will the Sixers, who are still searching for a permanent general manager, have to resort to Plan B-type players? They have been planning for this summer  along time. Anything less than a true game-changing player to supplement their young core will be disappointing.

- Glen & Ray on WIP Sports Radio brought up an interesting topic this weekend: why is attendance down 6% so far this baseball season? I have my own theories:

* Slow pace. Games take 3-4 hours to finish anymore. Millennials don't want to spend all that time watching boring baseball. Not in this day and age where everything needs to be fast, quick,  and easy. Don't think!  Back in the day old-school baseball fans cherished a 1-0 pitcher's duel, rehashing the nooks and crannies of every game, even after the game was over. Not anymore. Baseball could be a pretty dry sport, especially compared to the non-stop action of basketball or hockey. The many instant replays and stops in the game don't make it any easier to watch.

* Expense. Only so many dollars to spend on entertainment. Whereas before it was cheap to see a ballgame- a few bucks for a ticket, concessions and parking were reasonable, now it costs a few hundred dollars to see a game in person, especially if you have a family. Movies, amusement parks, vacation- all vie for the summer dollars. Baseball just isn't high on the list of priorities anymore.

* Convenience. It's much easier to turn a ballgame on at home taking advantage of your wide-screen TV, then battle the weather, traffic, parking and all that goes into actually being at the stadium for several hours. Before it was a treat to see a major league baseball game, something to look forward to each summer, outside on a bright, sunny day or a crisp, cool spring or fall evening. Now, so-called fans crash at home then go to bed.

* Other sports. As mentioned, other sports offer more action and more bang for your buck. Pro Football offers tail-gating and partying, fantasy football and betting on games. It's once-a-week and it's an event, rather than an everyday thing like baseball.

* Too noisy. It's true. Going to a game is noisy. They drown you out with music and noise, even during play ( as in basketball). The scoreboards tell you when to cheer. The  other fans around you may be noisy, or rude, or obnoxious fans of the visiting team.  Too much glitz sometimes at sporting events.

* No superstars. Mike Trout, one of the best baseball in any generation, is a draw, but I see their point with this one. There is no Sandy Koufax or Willie Mays.

- It's Monday, so it's time to look at the  standings...

- The Yankees and Red Sox are in a virtual tie in American League East. Nice to have the old rivalry back. They should both win 100 games.

- The world champion Astros are a game and a half ahead of surprising Seattle in AL West. The Angels have faded, and the Rangers and A's are non-factors.

- Meanwhile, the Indians are ahead in AL Central. Surprising Detroit lurks only a few games behind, with Minnesota not far off the pace.  I can only imagine the American League playoffs this fall, with Houston, Boston, new York and Cleveland battling it out.

- Milwaukee and the Cubs keep going back and forth in National League Central. Ever- dangerous St. Louis looms only 4 games off the pace. Don't count out Pittsburgh either.Like last year, this race should go down to the wire as well.

- No surprise that Arizona leads NL West, after briefly relinquishing the lead to Colorado. The Dodgers, favorites to win the west and return to the World Series, are a mere 1 1/2 games behind, after falling as much as 9 1/2 behind earlier in the spring. San Francisco isn't far off. The Rockies have faded after their initial surge.

- The National League may not have the power teams like the American League has, but the nL playoffs should be interesting, especially if a young team like the braves is involved. Somehow, Washington is going to be involved. This may be Bryce Harper's last season with the nationals, and he will want to have a big post-season before he hits the free agent market.

IN MY LIFE- FATHER'S DAY, ELMWOOD ZOO, MY DAD

- Nice Father's Day today. My dogs, Bud-Bud and Katie ( and my special girlfriend, Holly) gave me a fantastic, memorable gift- a wishing well I saw recently in Amish Country near Lancaster, Pa.  It's well-made and cute, black and white like my house, ans will sit proudly and forever on my front lawn! ( Anyone is free to stop by, make a wish and drop a coin in the bucket!).

- Went to Elmwood Zoo in Norristown this afternoon. Haven't been there since i was a kid. Small zoo but nice. Tucked away in Norristown, lots of shady trees, welcome on a hot afternoon like today. Got in free for Father's Day. Love the small animals- the prairie dogs, goats and such. Giraffes, zebras and monkeys were cool. Didn't care for the alligator, who was sunnying himself in the heat.  Mot a big reptile guy.

Elmwood Zoo is a small place great for kids. Very kid-friendly, with jungle gyms, trains and a carousel, plus kid food everywhere ( lots of chicken fingers). It's also a nice way to kill a few hours on a date. Mostly saw millennial with children.

- For a late lunch/early dinner we hit Maggiano's Little Italy in King of Prussia, one of our favorite places to eat. As always, the food was excellent- Fettachini Alfredo ( light) and Baked Ziti to go.As expected, it was packed for Father's Day, and noisy. Kudos to the waiters and staff, who are always friendly, despite always being frantically busy and having to deal with sometimes challenging and rude patrons.

- Happy Father's Day to my dad, who died in 1977. I think of him fondly, especially today. June was always a special month for dad- his birthday and Father's Day only weeks apart. As I have stated in previous memories, dad was a World War II vet, earning the Purple Heart. He was in the battle of the Bulge.

Dad worked a long time at the old B.F. Goodrich plant in Oaks, Pa, as a machinist. He often worked overtime to make ends meets. He loved the Phillies, bowling and his family. He was a shy, friendly guy. I inherited his dimples, left-handedness and hay fever from him.

Miss you dad!

- Temps nearing 100 F. tomorrow with high humidity. Only 6 months til winter! That's ok. I'd rather it be hot and sticky then bitterly cold and snowy. Can always chill-out with  ice-cold drinks and air conditioning.  Tough to get around in a blizzard, with power outtages.

Summer officially begins this Thursday morning at 6:07 am. ( the longest day of the year).

DAILY PHILLIES TRIVIA

What Phillies pitcher threw the most shutouts on Opening Day ( 3) ?

Answer: Chris Short ( 1965, 1968, 1970)

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, EAGLES

- The Phillies won on Saturday afternoon, despite themselves. They beat Milwaukee, 4-1.  They left 15 runners on base. That's the story of the season so far- no clutch hits, too many strikeouts ( 13 on Saturday). Still, the Phils won and will go for the series win today behind the 8-2 Aaron Nola.

- Manager Gabe Kapler made a controversial move late in the game which ultimately paid-off. Kapler took starting pitcher Zach Eflin out of the game in the 6th inning, after he dominated the Brewers over 5 innings. He only gave up 3 hits, 1 run, struck out 7 and threw a mere 73 pitches. Kapler pinch-hit Franco for Eflin ( Franco was intentionally walked). The Phillies squeezed out a pair of runs in the inning. Obviously Kapler is aware the club has trouble scoring runs. But  removing Eflin from a game in which he was in control, in favor of a shaky at best bullpen, was a risky move. Kapler would've been second-guessed to death if the move failed.

The bullpen ended up throwing 4 innings of scoreless ball. Another questionable move was only pitching Siranthony Dominguez one inning * the 8th( and allowing the struggling Hector Neris close. True, Neris had a 3-run lead, but we have seen Neris blow 3-run leads before. Neris has been pitching better recently, and he had a 1-2-3 9th inning against Milwaukee.

Kapler is different, that's for sure. Whether its instincts, a gut feeling or analytics, he gonna do what he wants, to hell with the fans and media.

- Rhys Hoskins had three hits, his average climbing to .249. He blasted the longest home run of his young career, a 431-foot shot to deep left field. His injury may have been a blessing in disguise, as Hoskins has been hot since his return.

- On the other hand, Odubel Herrera is ice cold. After getting two hits Friday night, Herrera slumped to 0-5 yesterday, including 3 strike outs. His average is down to .283 after leading the league at .363 only a month ago.

- With the win, the Phillies remain 4 games behind Atlanta in NL East. They are 1 1/2 games behind Washington for second place. They play seven games against the nationals before the end of the month.  After the getaway game in Milwaukee this afternoon, the team comes home to face St. Louis. I'll be at the game Monday night vs the always-tough Cardinals.

- Nice to see the New York Mets struggling so mightily. The Mets are 10 1/2 games out of first, 9 games under .500 The same Mets squad that many so-called baseball pundits predicted would win it all- NL East and World Series. Couldn't happen to a better team or obnoxious fans.

- Kudos to Eagles' owner Jeff Lurie for doing the championship rings and ceremony the right way. Lurie gave rings to everyone who works full-time for the Birds. The rings are gaudy, glitzy, blingy and beautiful. The ring ceremony/party was the official last event of the championship season. Now the focus turns to training camp in late July and the defense of their world championship. The Eagles will be the hunted now, but the team can still claim the role of underdog, as most experts are not picking the Birds to repeat ( some are not even taking the Eagles to win the NFC east again).

It's true- no NFC East team has won back-to-back division titles since the Eagles did it in 2004. Even mediocre teams will be gunning for Philly now. The Eagles must be at their best each and every game this fall.It will be interesting to to see if the club remains hungry or they have a natural let-down. With Carson Wentz at the helm, I doubt if the squad will be complacent.

PHILLIES PHODDER- KLENTAK

Hi Angelo,

A special edition of Phillies Phodder, mostly because I can't take it anymore...

As the Phillies sink into the summer and fall out of contention, I'm calling l for Phillies' GM  Matt Klenak's firing.

Exactly what has he done? He has made only one significant trade- Ken Giles to Houston for Vince Valasquez and other losers ( too soon to say if this is a bust). Otherwise, what has he done?

He sucks at talent evaluation ( remember Michael Saunders- the guy "who can carry a team for a month?"). His drafting sucks ( No. 1 overall Mickey Moniak hasn't even sniffed Reading, while both Washington and Atlanta have 20-year-old kids playing well in the majors). His free agent signings suck ( despite what Joe Giglio says, signing Santana was a huge mistake. He's not that good, plus he forced Hoskins to play left field).

Under Klentak, no wonder the Phillies' defense is the worst in baseball. Too many guys playing unfamiliar positions. Kingery should be at 2B. Hoskins at 1B.. Crawford at SS  ( remember Freddie Galvis and his excellent defense?).  Think of it- it would almost be like asking Flethcher Cox to  play safety or Claude Giroux to play goalie. It's STUPID!!!

Under Klentak, the offense sucks. Kapler ( whom Klentak hired) manages like he is in the American League. No bunts, steals, or  hit-and-runs.   They currently do not have a .300 hitter on the team. Will anyone hit 20 or more home runs, which should be a given in Citizens Bank Park?

Other than Siranthony, I don't trust anyone in the bullpen. Neris, Ramos, Morgan, Garcia- you can have them. Will Neshek pitch this summer?

I get it, . The team isn't ready yet for the playoffs. Machado and Harper await after the season. ( Will Klentak get one or the other, none or both? ) But why sign an Arrieta ( which I was for, to bring hope to the fans, and stability to the rotation)  if you didn't plan on contending this year?

Klentak is the problem here. I'm glad you see it. Too bad other media members- or John Middleton- can't see it.  If the Phillies become sellers instead of buyers in July ( which would be embarrassing ), hopefully Santana gets traded, Hoskins goes back to first, Hernandez gets dealt, Kingery plays second, and both Klentak and Kapler get fired after the season.

KLENTAK MUST GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES

- Ugly.

That sums up the night for the Phillies, losing 13-2 in Milwaukee last night. The Phillies, already the worst defensive team in baseball, committed another 4 errors against the Brewers. One of the reasons why the team is so poor on defense is because most of the fielders are playing out of their normal positions. Kingery should be at second base, not shortstop. Hoskins should be playing first base, not left field. Crawford should be at shortstop, not at third base. Funny, in the 7th inning on Friday night, that was the defensive scheme ( along with Franco at third base).

- Jorge Alfaro has a terrific arm, but he is a terrible defensive catcher. Is he destined, in the long run, to play first base or the outfield?

- Jake Arrieta had another poor outing, dropping to 5-5. I called for his signing, and I'm still happy  he is on the staff, but he has been disappointing and not worth the $30 million he is being paid this season. Along with Nola, he gives the team a chance to win.

- On the other hand, the Carlos Santana signing was  a huge mistake from the start. I didn't understand it then, as Rhys Hoskins is the first baseman of the future. Why force Hoskins to left field, where he is below- average defensively?  Santana walks too much, his average is low and even defensively he has been disappointing.  If the organization sells instead of buys in July, could they trade Santana and put Hoskins back on first?

- I want Manny Machado in the off-season, either at third or short. I also want Bryce Harper in the outfield, and the Phillies will be able to afford both. Williams, Herrera and Altherr are proving they are not worthy to play for a championship-contending club.

- Other than Siranthony Dominguez, you can have the rest of the inconsistent bullpen. Pat Neshek should help whenever he does return. But I don't trust Morgan, Ramos, Garcia, Neris or the rest of those bums.  GM Klentek will need to again rebuild the bullpen after the season.

- Even with the loss, the team stays 4 games behind Atlanta, and 2 1/2 games in back of Washington ( they both lost on Friday night).Again, the next few weeks will tell a lot about this current team. After the brewers, they face the cardinals, Nationals, Yankees and Nationals again before the end of June. July brings an easier schedule, with the Padres, Reds, Mets , Orioles and Marlins on tap. Hopefully  management doesn't buy into the Fool's Gold  of an easier schedule and sees the team for what it is- for better or for worse.

IN THE NEWS- NATION SPENDING MORE ON COMMUNITY LIVING

This article is from Disability Scoop..

Government spending on home and community-based services has risen dramatically, with a new report finding that growth doubled year-over-year as funding for institutions declined.

Some $167 billion in federal and state Medicaid funds went toward long-term services and supports across the country during the 2016 fiscal year, up from $159 billion the year prior.

Of that, 57 percent was devoted to community-based services, according to a new report produced for the Centers for medicare and Medicaid Services.

Significantly, dollars for community-based services rose 10 percent from 2015 to 2016, twice the average rate of growth seen in the program between 2011 and 2015. And, community living accounted for the majority of spending in 29 states and Washington, D.C., up from 28 states the year prior.

Funding for institutions fell 2 percent during the same time period, the report found.

The trend toward community-based services appears to be largely due to shifting expectations for people with developmental disabilities, with 78 percent of spending on this population going to community-based settings.

Meanwhile, most funds for services aimed at people with mental health and substance use disorders as well as older adults and those with physical disabilities went to institutional settings.

However, even among services for people with developmental disabilities, the report found significant variation by state.

Michigan and Oregon allocated all of their money for this population to community-based options. Every other state sent at least half of their funds to the community except for Mississippi where just 23 percent of dollars for those with developmental disabilities  went to such programs.

"A majority of medicaid ( home and community-based services) beneficiaries with developmental disabilities receiver services in the home of a family member, however, showing the growing importance of informal supports for this population," the report notes.

DAILY PHILLIES TRIVIA

Odulbel Herrera was selected  by the Phillies in the Rule 5 draft on 12/14/15. What team was Herrera on when the Phillies took him?

Answer: Texas Rangers

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, EAGLES

- Kudos to the Phillies, who bounced back and took 2 of 3 from Colorado. The usually inconsistent Vince Valasquez took a no-hitter into the 7th inning. He pitched like he did several years ago when Valasquez struck-out 16 Padres.

- Rhys Hoskins is getting hot, hitting a homer and collecting 3 hits against the Rockies yesterday afternoon. Odubel Herrera got a pair of hits, Nick Williams smashed a home run and J.P. Crawford had a couple hits. More importantly, the team hit with runners in scoring position and moved runners along. Along with the big inning, Kapler needs to  play small ball as well. Bunts, steals, hit-and-runs, all can help manufacture runs, especially when the offense is slumping.

- No need for Siranthony on Thursday afternoon. He will be available this weekend. The Phillies start a series with Milwaukee tonight. Arrieta, Eflin and Nola are scheduled to start this weekend.

- Excitement into the 7th inning as Valasquez took a no-hitter  late into the game. His pitch count was over 100. It would've been interesting to see if Kapler would've allowed Valasquez to return in the 8th if the no-hitter was still in tact.I know the fans would've killed Kapler if he walked out of the dugout and removed Valasquez from the game while he was still throwing a no-hitter.

Valasquez has the stuff to pitch a no-no down the road. So does Nola, who also took a no-hitter into the 7th inning this season.  There's nothing like it, the anticipation and excitement.

- The Eagles wrapped up mini-camp and got their championship rings on Thursday. The glitzier, the blingier, the better describes the ring.  Along with the memories, the ring can never be taken away.

- The team rests now for a good 6 weeks before training camp begins. Carson Wentz continues to look great. I twill be very interesting as September approaches whether it will be Wentz or Foles on opening night against the Falcons.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, BIG AL

_ The Phillies had no pulse last night in their loss to Colorado. What a dreadful, boring game to watch, let alone be there! This team puts me to sleep anymore. No moving runners- when they do get on base. No bunts, no steals, no hit-and-run. Stale. Lifeless. Unemotional. Robot-like.  Not entertaining at all.

They are now 4 games behind Atlanta. They don't play the braves until late September. The Phils are inching closer to being out of the NL East race. Will they be buyers or sellers in July if they continue to play this poorly?

Soon they will be irrelevant again. Soon it will be all-Eagles all the time. Soon we won't care.

-Was this supposed to be another rebuilding year/ Yes, until next off-season when the free agent crop of star players like Machado and Harper are available. Then again, why spend big money on free agents such as Santana and Arrieta if you don't hope to contend this season? Phillies management is again trying to play it both ways- rebuild while contending. I'm not sure this current brain-trust is savvy enough to pull it off> The duo of McPhail and Klentek have not impressed me at all. What has Klentek done since he was hired/ Other than trading away closer Ken Giles to Houston for practically nothing.

The team wraps up it's home stand with an afternoon game vs. the Rockies. The inconsistent Vince Valasquez is on the mound. A weekend series awaits in Milwaukee against the NL Central division leading Brewers. Then it's back home against the Cardinals, Yankees and Nationals. Brutal!

If the Phillies can stay afloat, their schedule does turn easier in July. But will it matter?

- If Nick Pivetta, now 4-6, keeps having bad games, does that mean de Los Santos or Irwin get a shot ? Both are pitching well at Lehigh Valley. Pivetta is improved from last year, and has good stuff and enormous potential, but is Pivetta merely an average pitcher?  Same with Valasquez. Who's to say these guys have locks on rotation spots if they continue to flounder?

Look at Jerad Eichoff, currently on the DL. Great stuff. A workhorse. Yet even before he got hurt I  never thought that Eichoff was anything special. That's my point. Now is the time for someone to step up and prove they are major league quality now and for the future. Yet no one is stepping up.  Are these young hurlers overrated? Poor talent evaluation? Bad coaching? Or are they just not good enough?

That's why I don't worry about trading young arms for proven talent. The young arms may not pan out of may get hurt. That's why the word "potential" is used. They haven't done it yet.

-  Odunel Herrera should be back in the line-up today after resting against a lefty last night. Tyson-stinkin' Anderson looked like Sandy Koufax in the punchless Phillies batting order.  Herrera has lost 80 points off his average in a month. He was leading the National league in hitting with a .361 average. We knew that couldn't last. Now he's down to .283,s till respectable but way down. I would be surprise if Herrera makes the All-Star team. He seems clueless and disinterested at the plate.

Even with all the problems scoring runs, and the defensive lapses, and the shaky bullpen ( other than Dominguez), the Phils still can take the series form Colorado with a win today. Somehow, I don't have much faith that they will.

- Big Al Meltzer, iconic sports guy in Philadelphia for many years, died last night at the age of 89.
I fondly remember Big Al from his Big 5 days. He would call the games on Channel 17, the Saturday night doubleheaders, when Big 5 basketball really meant something.

Big Al was in the same class with other famous Philly personalities, like Jim O'Brien, Sally Starr, Chief Halftown and Capt. Noah.

He was the voice during all the St. Joseph's- Villanova Holy Wars when I was growing up as a kid. He called the great Penn and LaSalle teams of the early 70s. Big Al was the announcer when superstar legends of college basketball like Calvin Murphy invaded the Palestra .He was there during some of the happiest times of my childhood.

I met Big Al once. it was a pleasant accident. We were walking back to the car after seeing an afternoon taping of the old Mike Douglas show. It was 7/7/77, truly a lucky day. I had met Jphn Ritter earlier after the show. So who doesn't come strolling down Market Street but Big Al, suit jacket thrown over his shoulder. He was heading to the nearby KYW-TV studios to do his nightly sportscast.

I remember called out "Big Al!" and he approached with a big grin, shaking hands. I knew he was busy so I didn't ask for an autograph. It was just a pleasure to meet him.

They don't make sports guys like that anymore. He was all-Philly, even though he once announced Buffalo Bills football games ( his partner was none other than O.J. Simpson). He didn't have a glitzy schick, like a lot of millennial so-called sports experts have now ( think  the awful Marc Farzetta). Big Al was meat-and-potatoes, no frills sports guy.  There will never be another Big Al.

IN THE NEWS- BLOOD TEST MAY SERVE AS EARLY PREDICTOR FOR CEREBRAL PALSY

 From Disability Scoop..

New research suggests that a blood test could one day help doctors flag children with cerebral palsy far earlier, allowing young kids with the condition to get a head start on intervention.

In a new study, researchers identified differences in a panel of microRNAs- molecules instrumental in the developmental process- in premature babies whir later developed abnormal muscle tone, a symptom associated with cerebral palsy.

"If our promising results are confirmed in larger, multicenter studies, screening preemies for microRNA biomarkers shortly after birth could allow intervention before cerebral palsy manifests, which is typically at 18 months to 2 years of age," said Maria Dizon, a neonatologist at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago and a senior author of the study published in the journal Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation International.

Though babies who are born premature or at low birth weight are considered to be at higher risk for cerebral palsy, researchers say the disability remains difficult to spot right away.

For the study, researchers assessed blood samples from 31 babies born premature and followed the children for 18 months. They found that kids with abnormal muscle tone had a considerable number of changes in their microRNA.

"The next step will be to validate in larger studies that our top 10 microRNAs from the abnormal tone group can reliably predict abnormal tone and cerebral palsy. We would then have conclusive evidence that these microRNAs can serve as early biomarkers for cerebral palsy in preemies," Dizon said.

If validated, she indicated that the findings could be significant for children with cerebral palsy.

"With earlier diagnosis and therapy, the chances of achieving better motor function are much greater since the central nervous system is most plastic in infants," Dizon said.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, EAGLES

- Gabe Kapler nearly blew another game last night, misusing his bullpen in the 9th inning. He started Garcia in the inning. Garcia is not a closer, as he has proven in the past. He was trying to hold a manageable 5-1 lead. Instead, Garcia got zero outs while giving up 4 hits and 3 runs. Siranthony Dominguez got the call and saved the 5-4 victory.

Why not close with Dominguez? One inning ( the 9th) as the closer? Why is Kapler  fooling around with the bullpen? Name Dominguez  the closer. Make Pat Neshek the set-up guy when he returns. If you must mix-and-match, do it in the 7th and 8th innings, not in the 9th.

- Scott Kingery is looking better as he launched a 3-run homer against the Rockies. I don't worry about Kingery. He may be more comfortable at second base, his natural position, but he has more than held his own at shortstop and is hitting better.

 - Odubel Herrera needs to sit on the bench for a game or two and clear his head. His average is down to .283, after hitting ,361 only a month ago. He looks disinterested and clueless. So why not play Altherr in center field and allow Herrera time to get it back together. If he is in tonight's line-up, Kapler should move him out of the  key 3-spot.

- Atlanta won last night to remain in 1st place, but the Phils did gain a game on Washington. The Phillies are 3 games back of the Braves.

- Aaron Nola won again, going 8-2 on the year. He should be the Phillies'  lone representative on the All-Star team this summer. Hernandez and Herrera have fallen off and won't make it. no one else deserves the honor. Not only will Nola  make the team, he may even start the game. The last Phillie pitcher to start the All-Star Game was Roy Halladay in 2011.

- The Eagles continue mini-camp before breaking until late July and training camp. After the players get their championship rings this week, it will be time to turn the page on the glorious Super Bowl-winning season and focus on repeating in 2018. Wentz continues to look good. Darrin Sproles is back, and should be even more of a weapon in the kick return game. LaGarrette Blount and Trey Burton are gone, but Sproles, Mike Wallace and Dallas Goedert, the tight end from South Dakota who was the Birds' first selection in the NFL draft this spring, give the team plenty of weapons on offense.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, BASEBALL

 - The Phillies were off last night. They are 3 games behind both Atlanta and Washington in national League East. They remain 3 games over .500. Colorado invades Citizens Bank Park tonight for the start of a 3-game series. Washington faces a tough task as they play against the Yankees in new York, while the braves host the struggling Mets.

- Aaron Nola goes tonight for Philadelphia, with hopes of getting the Rockies series off to a good start. After Colorado the Phils travel to Milwaukee this weekend to take on the brewers again, then it's back home for games against St. Louis and Washington.

- I'm still lacking faith in these Phillies, especially the manager, after witnessing how is is using the bullpen, specifically Siranthony Dominguez. The next month or so will be key in determining if the team will be buyers or sellers before the July trade deadline. Sellers would mean a step backward in a year that starting promising. Sellers would also mean both Klentek and Kapler should get fired after the season.

- Quick assessment of the Baseball races...

* The Yankees and Red Sox are in a virtual tie in AL East. Is till expect both to win 100 games and battle it out all summer.

* Seattle continues to surprise in AL West, holding off Houston, as the Angels fade.

* A tight division race in NL Central, as Milwaukee held the lead for a while. Now the Cubs have nosed ahead. Be leery of St. Louis, which is only a few games behind. The Cards also seem to contend.

* Arizona has taken control of NL West again, after surrendering the lead to Colorado. Both the Dodgers and Giants got to within 1 1/2 games of first place before falling back this week.

* Cleveland has started to pull away in American League Central, as expected. In the long run, no one in that division will be able to stay with the Indians.

* Imagine the AL playoffs right now, with powerhouse teams like the Astros, Bosox, Yanks and Indians. Toss in the  surprise Mariners and one other wild card team and you've got a helluva post-season in the fall.I still think the Indians will come out of it as the AL team in the World Series, facing the Nationals.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES

- The Phils salvaged a game in their weekend series with Milwaukee, beating the Brewers 4-3 on Sunday afternoon. The team finally played a little small ball, which paid dividends. In the 5th inning alone, when Philadelphia scored three runs, there was a bunt, a stolen base, a sacrifice fly and walk. When your'e not clutch with runners on base, as the Phillies have been all season, manufacturing runs is important. The team did it successfully on Sunday- will it continue?

- Even though things worked out yesterday I still think Siranthony Dominguez should be the closer, pitch one inning, which would be the 9th inning. I get it that Kapler is using Dominguez- his most reliable reliever- in key situations, a she did against Milwaukee. Dominguez pitched the 7th and 8th innings Who closes in the 9th? On Sunday it was Luis Garcia, who got the first two outs before almost choking and allowing the next two runners on base. Second and third, two outs, with Christian Yelch up.

Kapler brought in Tommy Hunter, who got Yalch to ground out to end the game. It worked, plus Kapler didn't walk the always-dangerous Yelch to get to Agholor, who had struck out four times before the 9th. I just think if Kapler continues on this slippery slope he will get burned sooner or later. Right now, the Phillies don't have a closer or a set-up guy. Hopefully when Pat Neshek returns he will be the set-up guy, and Dominguez will emerge as the closer.

- Zach Eflin again pitched well, striking out a career-tying 9 in six innings. He continues to hold onto one of the rotation spots, as both Valasquez and Pivetta struggle.

- It's really simple why the Phillies' defense is the worst in baseball. Too many guys out of position, expected to play new positions on a major league level. It's all analytics. Hoskins should be at first; Kingery at second; and Crawford at short. The catchers have been surprisingly bad. including six catcher's interference calls.  This won't change until the do-nothing general manager makes some trades and gets guys back in their normal, more comfortable spots.

- It looks like, at least for now, Franco is benched and no longer in the future plans. He is only 25, yet Franco has had numerous chances to be the everyday third baseman. For the most part he has failed, and maybe a change of scenery is needed. If the Phillies sign Manny Machado after the season, he will probably play third. They drafted Alec Bohm, a third baseman from Wichita State, as their long-term future. So it looks like Franco is trade bait, either in July or during the off-season.

The club gained a game on both Atlanta and Washington, who lost on Sunday. The Phils are 3 games back as they begin a 3-game series  with Colorado.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, TRIPLE CROWN

- The Phillies get destroyed again by the brewers. I'm tired of  Manager Gabe Kapler  and his unemotional, robot-like  demeanor that everything is peaches and cream and will be fine. Get real! I would love to see him get mad and keep it real.  Yes, every baseball team goes thru rough spots. but do you really think this team will get any better this summer?

This team plays terrible defense. Think of the great Phillies teams in the past. The World Champion Phillies of 1980s had Manny Trillo, Larry Bowa , Mike Schmidt and Garry Maddox- all Gold Glove caliber-like players.2008 players Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino played superb defense. The current club will never contend until the defense gets better.

The season started out frustrating, then turned fun, now is confusing, boring and again frustrating. As stated previously, they strikeout too much. They don't play small ball- no bunting, no steals, no moving base runners. They have no acknowledged closer or set-up guy. They have too many players playing out of position, which has effected their defense ( the worst in baseball) and their offense.

It's more frustrating than last year. This season there was hope of meaningful game sin September, whereas in 2017 the rebuilding process was still on. Management had to think they would contend this summer by signing Arrieta and Santana.

Speaking of Santana, He has been a bust. He walks too much and doesn't drive in big runs, especially when hitting in the middle of the order. I thought he was a Gold Glove first baseman>? Instead, he has been shaky and tentative at best in the field. Plus he has forced Rhys Hoskins into left field. He has been disappointing and he wasn't needed.

With Franco sitting against a left-handed pitcher, looks like the Phillies are giving up on him, finally. That's a shame, seeing he is still only 25-years-old. But Franco has had chances to seize third base for good and he has failed, inconsistent in the field, flailing at the plate. He still has enormous potential but for whatever reason, it has not translated to the field.

If the Phillies turn out to be seller sin July, both Kapler and Klentek need to go. Santana, Franco, Hernandez need to be traded. Young players need to play in their more comfortable positions. Returning to fundamentals should be a key. Analytics may always be in play now in this modern age, but analytics should not be the major factor in building a team and managing a ballgame.

With Herrera dipping below .300, the Phils have no ,300 hitters on their team. They have a general manager who is afraid to make bold moves to improve the club, both now and in the long-term. Klentek's talent evaluation is flawed  ( see Mickey Moniak and Michael Saunders). They have lost 10 of 13 games since they spent one brief day in 1st place. And now, their top pitching prospect ( and the 23rd prospect in all of baseball), Sixto Sanchez, is on the DL with right elbow inflammation. Serious, concerning but the Phillies are cautiously optimistic, with Sanchez resting for several weeks.

What else can go wrong?

After the finale with the Brewers this afternoon, the Phils continue their home stand with a three-game set with Colorado before playing in Milwaukee next weekend.Don't forget, before June ends, the Phillies will also play the Cardinals, Nationals and Yankees, so things don't get easier.

- It was thrilling to see Justify win the Triple Crown yesterday. Horse racing fan or not, it's something special to witness a Triple Crown winner, Justify being only the 13th horse in history to win the rare honor. I do remember Secretariat and Seattle Slew while growing up, then the long drought in-between winners, before American Pharaoh broke the ice in 2015. I also thought of great horses I never saw but heard about, like citation, War Admiral, even Man O' War and Seabiscuit.
