Riggs all over court
It was in 1973 that 55-year-old Bobby Riggs first challenged woman's tennis champion Margaret Court on Mother's Day ( May 13, 1973). Stating that woman tennis players are "overrated and overpaid," Riggs then went on to embarrass the world's number one woman player, 6-2, 6-1.
Billie Jean King, who earlier in the year declined Rigg's offer, agreed to play after witnessing the "Mother's Day Massacre," and in front of the largest crowd in tennis history, King dominated Riggs 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 in the famous "battle of the sexes" at the Houston Astrodome later in that year.
