PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES,

- Hector Neris blew his second save in less than a week, and the Phillies lost a heart breaker to the hated Mets Friday night, 3-1. The Phils are now 22-16, still 1/2 game behind the braves, with New York and Washington creeping up on Philly and Atlanta. Against the National League East so far this early season, the Phillies are a woeful 7-14. They continue to struggle against the Mets, going 0-3 this year.

-I wrote it last Sunday, when Neris choked in Washington and the team suffered a frustrating loss to the Nationals. Neris blew it again last night, failing to protect a 1-0 lead in the 9th inning. Bad loss for the fans and players. Neris is a better 8th inning set-up guy than a closer. Why not let young Siranthony Dominguez close> Can he do any worse?

- True, the batters also failed in the clutch- again. Herrera, Hoskins and Santana all hit with the bases loaded and didn't come thru.Overall, the offense has been good but they let Mets starter Steven Matz off the hook all night.

- Shame that, for the second  consecutive start, Jake Arrieta pitched brilliantly and didn't get the victory. Wasted effort. If the bulllpen ( Neris) does its job, suddenly Arrieta is 5-1, along with Aaron Nola, and the Phillies carry momentum into first place. IfNneris does his job, the club has a 7-game winning streak. Instead, they need to beat Synderggard and drGrone ( weather permitting) to take the series. Psychologically, the Phillies need to start playing better against the Mets and Nats and not feel intimidated.

- Odubel Herrera crushed a 1st inning home run and now leads the National League in hitting with a lusty .360 average. He continues to play like an All-Star, reaching base in 40 consecutive games.
