THIS DAY IN PHILLY SPORTS HISTORY- MAY 16

A Preakness Tradition

As soon the Preakness winner has been declared official, a painter climbs a ladder to the top of a replica of the old Clubhouse cupola. He then paints the colors of the winning owners' silks on the jockey and horse which are part of the weathervane on top.

This tradition started in 1909 after the original weathervane was struck by lightning and destroyed. It was replaced and coated with the winning colors of 1909 winner, Effendi.
