PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, NFL, PLAYOFFS, BASEBALL

-The Phillies won a big game last night, perhaps their biggest victory so far this season, moving to within 1/2 game of the first place Braves.  It was huge in several ways: not only to creep closer to Atlanta in NL East, but also important because the Phils won't play the bravos again until late September.  It was important psychologically to beat the team that had won three straight series earlier this season. Now the Phillies know they can play with Atlanta.

- Atlanta was shut-out in their two losses in Philadelphia. Jake Arrieta again pitched well , with Siranthony Dominguez and Hector Neris finishing up the 4-0 win. Even though Neris got the save in the 9th, it was Dominguez who got the key outs in the 7th and 8th innings. It's obvious the kid is now the secret weapon in the bullpen, the hammer, the one to get the big outs at the most crucial times.

- The Braves travel to Boston this weekend to take on the powerful Red Sox, while the Phillies stay home to face the Blue Jays. Advantage Phillies. First place this weekend?

-A little over 27,000 at the ballpark last night. Better crowd. Weather is just getting nice. Kids are still in school. Fans are starting to believe in the team. So, 27,000 fans in the stands is a great start.

- The Dude, Lenny Dykstra, was arrested on gun charges and drugs. Again. Dykstra was always a little messed up and is still messed up. He has not been invited to come back for the Phillies'  25th anniversary of the great 1994 Phillies team. Nice celebration but Dutch Daulton died, and now Dykstra is in trouble, so two key figures of Macho Row won't be there.

- The Washington Capitols finally broke the ice and made it to the Stanley Cup finals, winning at Tampa Bay on Wednesday night. They will take on the underdog, expansion Vegas Golden Knights for the Cup. The Caps may be emotionally spent after a tough series against the Lightning, whereas Vegas has been resting since dispatching Winnipeg a few days ago. The Cinderella story continues as the Golden Knights will win the Cup in six games.

- Meanwhile, in the NBA, the Celtics won again at home, where they are undefeated in the playoffs, Cleveland win probably win Game 6 at home, which will set up a winner-take-all Game 7 back in Boston. As much as I hate to say it the Celts look like a team of destiny. Will LeBron single-handedly  push the Cavaliers to the finals?

- Golden State lost game 4 at home, as the Rockets tied their series at 2-2. Houston has home court advantage again, with 2 of the last 3 games in Houston. Still, I see the Warriors winning somehow and moving on.

- I really don't care about the NFL and the national Anthem thing. All the owners did with their recent vote to force players to stand for the anthem was bring the topic to light yet again. It had faded away somewhat as the football season played out. now, fans will be wondering if players/team will purposely violate the league rules. Will players stay in their locker room for the anthem and protest?

I watch football to forget about social issues for three hours. I wish everyone would get back to the game, and try to make the game better.

- Baseball: The Yankees and the Red Sox will be in a war all summer. Wouldn't surprise me if the Yanks, Bosox and Astros all win 100 games this season.  The Cubs have fallen 4 games in back of the surprising brewers in NL Central, with Pittsburgh and St. Louis also falling back. Will it be Milwaukee's year or will they fade like they did in 2017? Colorado has taken over the top spot in NL West form Arizona, but look out for the giants and Dodgers, who are hovering below the surface, only a few games back. I see the West as being tight all season, with any of the four teams capable of winning the division. With all of their injuries, give the Dodgers credit for creeping back near the top, but will those same injuries keep them form first place in the end.
