PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, SIXERS

- The Phils lost in LA last night, 8-2 but that wasn't the big story. A CAT-scan revealed that Rhys Hoskins has a fractured jaw from the foul ball he took off his face on Monday night. Hoskins returned to Philadelphia where further evaluation is pending. He will go on the DL for sure. Surgery may be needed to fix the jaw. We should know today.

Meanwhile, looks like outfielder Dylan Cozens will be called up from Lehigh Valley to fill in. This is Cozens' big shot. He was the other Bash Brother to Hoskins in the minors. He strikes out too much but in the world of analytics, that doesn't matter. He does bring raw power to an offensively-challenged club. He can run and has a rocket arm. Hopefully he sticks and becomes the everyday right fielder, leaving the team with a nice problem to solve when Hoskins returns.

- Aaron Nola faces Clayton Kershaw tonight in a classic pitchers' duel. Chance for the Phillies to split the series/Kershaw, coming off the DL, may only go 5 or 6 innings. Nola comes off a game where he had a no-hitter into the 7th inning. Big game to win tonight, going into San Francisco.

- The Phils are now 1 1/2 games behind the streaking Washington Nationals, who took over first place. The good thing is that the Phillies have 16 games left with the Nats, including all three series at Citizens Bank Park.  Neris blowing that last game on Sunday, May 6  was key. I siad back then, building up as much of a lead on Washington as you can before they get hot.

- Even if it turns out that Bryan Colangelo's wife was behind the fake Twitter accounts, he is still guilty. He leaked confidential medical information, and 3 of the accounts were deleted or made private when the Sixers found out. I wouldn't trust him now, not that I did before. But what if Colangelo and his wife were in it together? What if she used her phone number in case they were caught?

- Either way, this mess needs to be cleared up quickly, as the draft is upcoming and free agency starts on July 1st. Would Brett Brown fill in until the Sixers hire a new GM?

What is the name of the ballpark where the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs play?

Answer: Coca-Cola Park.

"Fo, Fo, Fo"

- Moses Malone

On this day in 1983, "Fo, Fo, Fo" was declared by Future Hall of Fame center Moses Malone, predicting that the 1983 Philadelphia 76ers, who had dominated the regular season with a 65-17 record, would sweep their three rounds in the 1983 NBA Playoffs.

The Milwaukee Bucks would ruin Malone's prediction by winning Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals, 100-94.

Philadelphia was almost perfect, sweeping the Knicks, beating the Bucks in five games, and then sweeping the Lakers in the NBA Finals. Their 12-1 record and .923 winning percentage stood as the best in playoff history at the time until the Lakers went 15-1 (.938) in 2001.

DAILY PHILLIES TRIVIA

Mike Schmidt played his entire career with the Phillies ( 18 years). Who was second at 11 years?

Answer: Larry Christensen

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, SIXERS

- Kudos to the Phillies  for nicely rebounding from a devastating loss to Los Angeles. Great having ace pitchers like Arrieta and Nola  to stop losing streaks. Zach Efflin goes tonight, with a classic pitchers duel, Nola vs. Kershaw on Thursday. Good chance to at least split the series.

- Nick Williams has been the best pinch-hitter in baseball, smacking 3 homers. But he deserves to play everyday. He was an RBI machine last season. This year he has been platooning in the outfield. Somehow he needs a more regular role. Williams crushed another homer in LA last night.

- Arrieta pitched 7 scoreless innings, coming up big when needed. Hector Neris gave up the only run in a shaky 8th inning. The only guy I trust in that bullpen now is Siranthony Dominguez. When Pat Neshek returns ( hopefully soon), either Neris or Garcia need to go.

- Crazy stuff with this Brian Colangelo and fake Twitter accounts. Why would the guy risk his job and career? Why is anyone on Twitter? Ego. Delusional thinking  that his opinions are important enough to read and follow? Other than his meaningless opinions, the most serious allocations are leaking confidential medical information. It will be interesting to see what, if anything, the Sixers will do about this. It needs to happen quickly, as the draft comes up in several weeks, with free agency starting on July 1st.

Chances are Colangelo really did have five fake accounts. He admitted to one, and, when the organization found out about the rogue accounts, three were immediately switched to private accounts.

It's one thing if Colangelo was open about make comments and debating with fans and was honest about it. It's another when he says one thing publicly to the media and another when he secretly expresses his honest feelings on social media.

I expect him to get fired. Will Sam Hinkie return? I'm sure the Trust the Process idiots will be clambering for Hinkie and saying "I told you so!"

I don't feel sorry for Colangelo. He didn't have to be a spineless coward, hiding behind five fake Twitter accounts, criticizing his own players, leaking confidential medical information and arguing with fans.He was weasel-like, sneaky and weird.

PS. Howie Rossman is so much ahead of the other clueless GM's in the city. Klentek, Hexstall and Colangelo are all losers.

- Meanwhile coach Brett Brown was given a  three-year contract extension. Brown was badly out-coached during the Boston series. He lost as he was told to lose for many seasons. He has been a good solider and now has a shot for greatness.

MOVIE REVIEW- SOLO

*** out of four

I'm not a big Star Wars fan, but I have enjoyed the last three Star Wars films that have been released, including the newest one, Solo. I saw it over the Memorial Day weekend at King of Prussia on a Sunday morning. The theater was about halfway full, mostly consisting of teen to middle aged fans.

Interesting to note that Solo, which depicts the early Hans Solo character, played by Harrison Ford in the future, has "bombed"  so far at the box office. It's has made money and will be the No. 1 movie for the important holiday weekend, but it has underachieved so far. In the wonderful world of Disney and Star Wars, underachieving isn't good, especially with so many future projects tied up in the franchise.

There are plenty of reasons making their way around the Internet why the movie isn't as wildly popular as other Star wars flicks. First, there in no Force to be found. It's a side-story about Solo, Chewbacca and a few other familiar characters and how they came to be. So, after over 40 years of getting acquainted with certain characters and the carefully structured plot and time-frame of events in the galaxy, there is no epic movie to dwell on and enjoy.

The problem with a prequel is that if you don't see any character in future ( or, in this case, past) Star Wars movies, chances are they will die in this one. We know Han Solo won't die in this one, because he lives to grow and become Harrison Ford down the road. In that way, some of the drama and fun are gone. We know everything will turn out OK.

Another reason is that the last movie in the franchise just came out not long ago. Call it Star Wars fatigue. Usually there is a good year, sometimes longer, between movies. There are nine more planned in the years to come, with the next one scheduled for release in December 2019.

The franchise has never done particularly well overseas, so it's no great surprise why it didn't do well internationally over the weekend. Here in America, despite the warning signals from fans wow weren't so enthusiastic, the lukewarm reception is more of a surprise.

Personally, I enjoyed the film. Action-packed from the get-go, I think I only fell sleep once, which is good for me at the movies. The battles and chases tend to be overly-long and tedious.

It was fun seeing old pros like Woody Harrelson get into the story. As a non-fan, maybe the impact of finally finding out how Solo obtained the Millennium Falcon doesn't hit home as hard, but Solo is a good popcorn, mindless adventure.

Other than three guys wearing hats like Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) there were no goofy costumes in the audience. Maybe that's hat true fans miss in this one. The campiness, the anticipation of camping out for tickets or to be the first one in the theater. Doesn't seem to be the fun associated with other Star Wars events.

Funny, I may have liked Solo better than a real Star Wars fanatic. I took it as a summer action movie  no expectations no deep meaning, whereas a geek may criticize or stay away  from Solo, not wanting to be disappointed.

Solo will hang around theaters a while, at For a c least until mid-June when the next Jurassic Park film comes out. Escaping form reality for a few hours isn't the worst thing. Solo is a good time,e specially for the casual fan.

DAILY PHILLIES TRIVIA

Which  Phillies championship team was in first place on June 1st- the 1980 team or the 2008 team?

Answer- 2008

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, PLAYOFFS

- It was a brutal loss in Los Angeles last night. The Phils blew a 4-0 lead in Dodger Stadium, aka the House of Horrors, which included an ugly 8th inning of miscues, sloppy defense and mental lapses.  Awful way to start a big 10-game road trip. With the loss the team dropped to third place, 1 1/2 game out of first ( it seemed so long ago since the weekend, when the Phillies were briefly in first place for less than a full day)., and now 1/2 behind the surging Washington Nationals.

- Rhys Hoskins was still bating in the 2-holes, still continuing to struggle, and unbelievably hit a foul ball off his face late in the game. Hopefully he snaps out of his slump soon, but for now, he is killing the team. It's starting to creep into his defense as well, as he is noticeably frustrated. How will he handle this adversity?

Turns out Hoskins badly cut his lower lip and should be OK. Maybe the injury is a blessing in disguise and gives him a  much-needed day or two off to clear his head. Has the organization ruined Hoskins by moving him to left field? Now they continue to play him, despite the drastic slump. They keep him in the pressure-packed 2-slot instead of hitting him in the less-stressful 5 or 6 slot.

- Last night was the worst ending to a game since last season in Dodger Stadium when Hector Neris surrendered three consecutive home runs and blow a 9th inning, 3-run lead. That devastating defeat sent the club into a death spiral for the entire season. Will the team bounce back tonight, show some heart with grit and fight or will they turtle-up and play dead, intimidated by the mighty Dodgers?

- Total choke-job by the Phillies in their 5-4 implosion. Defense and fundamentals have been poor all season. Worse yet, Washington won, and Atlanta and the Mets split a doubleheader. Phillies deserved to lose. Offense sucked. They shut down after building an early 4-0 lead. They couldn't add on and it cost them. Defense sucked, but that's nothing new. Manager Gabe Kapler mismanaged the bullpen. Sirahtony Dominguez got 4 key outs in the 6th and 7th innings but could've used him in the 8th. Hasn't he shown enough to be the closer?

-Franco- who had a terrible game and left numerous guys on base all night- misplayed a ball to start the 8th which opened the flood gates. I didn't have a good feeling after that. Hernandez lost a pop-up in the twilight sky. That kept the Dodger rally alive. A play that simply cannot happen. Unacceptable. Hernandez hits a three-run homer in the second inning then plays shotty second base later. Too inconsistent are these Phils.

- Garcia and Morgan gave up the game in the 8th. Dominguez was used. Hunter is a waste. Kapler was saving Ramos and Neris for the 9th. This vaunted bullpen sucked, with no help form the poor defense.

- Vince Valasquez had a no-hitter going into the 6th inning. For some reason he strayed away from his fastball and gave up two runs before being pulled. No surprise he couldn't last. No matter what, Valasquez is what he is- a 5 or 6 inning pitcher who suddenly hit a brick wall beyond that limit.

- Fans wanna believe in the Phillies. You watch them, wear the gear, attend the games. They make it hard to love them when they throw a game away like last night. Maybe that's why attendance is low. Fans wanna believe. But first the team needs to believe in itself.

- Jake Arrieta tries to stop the bleeding tonight. Aaron Nola faces Clayton Kershaw in a classic pitchers duel on Thursday afternoon. Zach Efflin hurls the Wednesday night game Having an Arrieta and Nola in the rotation stops long losing streaks.

- The Vegas Golden Knights won Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals last night over Washington, 6-4. Expansion Vegas is only 3 games away from one of the greatest sports stories in history- a team in it's first year of existence winning a championship. Theya re a lesson to the flyers and all teams attempting a rebuilding project. it doesn't and shouldn't take forever if you know what the hell you are doing.

- Meanwhile, Golden State makes it  to the NBA finals. again, playing Cleveland in the finals for the 4th straight year. Interesting that the playoffs were home team-dominated   thru-out until Game 7 of both conferences. When the chips were down in the deciding game, the better team won, home court  or not.  LeBron may just will the Cavs to another title. What, if anything, will this championship run mean to LeBron possibly joining the Sixers after the season?

MEMORIAL DAY MEMORIES

Today is Memorial Day, the unofficial start of the summer season. Here are some of my Memorial Day memories..

-  Memorial Day has always been my favorite summer holiday ( even though it's in spring). July 4th is patriotic but too damn hot. Labor Day is the start of football season but also sad with summer behind us and winter ahead. Memorial Day is perfect. No too hot yet far from the winter. The first holiday off since New Year's Day, a long time coming on the calendar. Kids are getting out of school. Weddings and graduations abound. It's the season of hopes and dreams, even in baseball, which is well underway now. It's a holiday to look forward with hope and promise, but also one to look back and reflect.

- Thinking of war vets and especially of those who died to make us free. I always try to listen to that great Billy Ray Cyrus song, "Some Gave All.' It's the perfect Memorial Day song. The parades, the tributes and the military honors are all well-deserved on this day. Sure, we think of cookouts and the jersey Shore during this much-anticipated weekend. As long as we never forget what Memorial Day is all about. Watching "Saving Private Ryan" is also a good tradition to fall into every Memorial Day.

- My dad fought bravely in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. He was hurt on Christmas Eve, 1944. My mom got a telegram that evening, saying he was hurt, but with no details, what his injuries were, where he was or even if he were still alive. That had to be a terrible Christmas, full of anxiety and fear, for my parents and my 1-year-old brother.

My dad, like most soldiers, never used to like to talk about the war. When he died in 1977 he was buried without the Purple Heart he had  earned from the battle of the bulge. Instead we found it later, tucked away in a box in a drawer. Mom suggested I wear it  as a remembrance of dad. I still wear it proudly to this day. No, I didn't earn it but I'm honoring my father and all vets by keeping it alive and sharing memories with others.

- For a long time my dad's grave site didn't have a flag. So one year before Memorial Day I fought for the flag that my dad had fought for at one time. I made a few phone calls, ended up talking to someone a the VA, and now there is an American flag proudly displayed at his grave site.

- Memorial Day in the mid 80s ( can't exactly recall the year) stands out as the day I officially found out i had kidney stones. I'll never forget it as it was early afternoon, we were getting ready to bar-be-q when i felt the sharpest pain I ever knew in my side and back area. Plus I was deathly sick. I didn't know what was happening to me. They rushed me to the hospital and guess what? I had a kidney stone trying desperately to vacate my body.  When I finally passed the lil' bugger a few days later, I couldn't believe how a speck of gravel could cause so much pain and grief.

- Bar-be-q food is the best. Hot dogs are my favorite, followed by chicken and burgers. The sides- cold salads, pasta salad, macaroni and potato salads, are the best. Even dessert- ice cream or watermelon- are refreshing treats. Stuff always tastes better on a grill, especially a charcoal grill. Cookouts are unique because they are the one meal you share with family, friends or even strangers. It's so casual, eating outdoors in a backyard, wearing practically nothing. No reservations needed- just pull up a picnic table.

PHILLIES SPORTS CORNER- PHILLES

- First place Philadelphia Phillies! This is the latest that the Phils have been in first since 2011. They are now 29-20.They finally leap-frogged the Braves, who lost again in Boston. Big game today- weather permitting- vs. the Blue Jays before the club heads to the West Coast to start a four-game series with the Dodgers in LA.

- Aaron Nola took a no-hitter into the 7th inning on Saturday afternoon. He finished with 10 strikeouts, only surrendering one run and one hit. He is truly turning into an ace. I'm now surprised when he has a bad game.  Shame he didn't get the win. Someday he will pitch a no-hitter. He has that kind of stuff.

- Siranthony Dominguez again pitched brilliantly, getting four key outs and the win. Luis Garcia was the next reliever to get a shot to closer, and despite a shaky 9th inning, he did exactly that. He gives Gabe Kapler yet another option in the bullpen.Interesting that Hector Neris was available for the save but Kapler went with Garcia and stuck with him til the end.

- Nick Williams slugged a pinch-hit homer in the 8th inning to win the game. He now is batting .500 as a pinch-hitter  with a league-leading three home runs off the bench. Williams is young and deserves to play everyday but his role as the best pinch-hitter in baseball is a valuable one, and, at least for this season, his role may be primarily off the bench.

- So sweet waking up this morning and seeing the word "Philadelphia" on top of the National League East standings. After failing to capture the lead so many times this spring, it had to finally happen that the Phils took control of the division. Getting out in the lead and making the braves, Mets and Nationals catch them would be different. The Nats are only 1 1/2 games off the pace. Washington is the team to watch. The Phillies have plenty of games left with the Nats, including back-to-back home -and-home weekend series at the end of June.

- Nick Pivetta pitches the finale of the Toronto series and the home stand. . Let's see how the team reacts to being in 1st place All this and Rhys Hoskins and Scott Kingery, two young keys in the line-up, have been disappointments so far.

- Why not the Phillies? Anything is possible after the Eagles' big Super Bowl championship. The Sixers gave us excitement and hope over the winter. Meaningful, fun baseball, a summer of hope ahead, things we have lacked for a good seven seasons. Why can't the Phils make the playoffs, gain valuable experience, and convinced future free agents ( Bryce Harper? Manny Machado?) that Philly is the place to be.

Back home again, in Indiana,

And it seems that I can see.

How I long for my Indiana home.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES

- Disappointing loss by the Phillies last night to Toronto. Nice comeback that fell short in the 9th inning. Rhys Hoskins, taking a called third strike with the bases loaded and one out, is unacceptable. Need to put the ball in play and at least hit a fly ball to tie the game.  Odubel Herrera chased a first pitch bad pitch, grounding out to end the 6-5 loss. The team is 0-16 when trailing after 8 innings. No comeback or walk-off wins. A trend that must change soon.

- Another wasted opportunity to climb into 1st place since the Braves lost in Boston.Look out for Washington, who continues to creep up on the back, only 2 games off the lead. With a 10-game road trip looming to Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago, the next two games against the Blue Jays are big. Aaron Nola and Nick Pivetta, two hot pitchers, go the rest of the weekend.

- Hoskins continues to struggle and needs to bat 5th or lower in the order. He is killing the club in the 2-hole. The team continues to leave too many runner son base, striking out too many times. Herrera is the only .300 hitter on the team. And the defense continues to be sloppy at times. It's a wonder the Phils are still only 1/2 game out of first in NL East.

- Another small crowd for a Friday night at the Bank. 21,000 was announced. Soon the kids will be  out of school. hopefully the weather stays nice and fans will start to believe in this team. Last night would've been a good start towards that goal but a comeback wasn't in the cards.

- Zach Eflin had an off-night against Toronto, but he has been pitching well since he was called up from Lehigh Valley. There are still rumors of Cole Hamels coming back to the Phils, which would give the rotation a needed lefty and another veteran presence. I don't think it's a coincidence that the young pitchers on the staff are better  since a true pro and Cy Young Award winner Jake Arrieta was signed.

- Win or lose, it's fun to have meaningful baseball games again heading into Memorial Day. If the Phillies are in contention on July 4th, it will be time to start getting serious.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, PLAYOFFS, NFL NEWS

- The Phillies were off last night as they prepare for a weekend series against Toronto. With Atlanta in Boston for three games, and the Phils only a 1/2 game behind the Braves, it's a great chance for Philly to leap-frog over Atlanta for first place in NL East.  Zach Eflin, who has been pitching well recently, goes tonight, with Pivetta and Nola following.

- Interesting to note that both Golden State and Cleveland are on the brink of elimination. Let's see what they are made of now.  Could be a changing of the guard in the NBA? Sixers next season?

- Terrible job by the awful duo of Farzetta-Fadool interviewing the jackass Cris Collinsworth recently. NBC announcer on NBC network.  led to softball questions. I wanted more of a grilling. Can't watch the Super Bowl again without turning down the sound. But what do you expect from the weak Farzetta-Fadool? No wonder Philly Sports Talk show has gone downhill fast.

- I'm rooting for the expansion Vegas Golden Knights to beat Washington in the Stanley Cup finals, starting with Game 1 on Saturday. What a story so far! If the Knights actually win the Cup in their first year of existence, it will be a true Cinderella story.

- Even though I'm not  a big racing fan, it's still a thrill and tradition  every Memorial Day weekend  to watch the Indy 500. "Gentleman start your engines" brings back memories of summer weekends of the past.

Joan M. Vitale ( retired assistant trainer).

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, NFL, PLAYOFFS, BASEBALL

-The Phillies won a big game last night, perhaps their biggest victory so far this season, moving to within 1/2 game of the first place Braves.  It was huge in several ways: not only to creep closer to Atlanta in NL East, but also important because the Phils won't play the bravos again until late September.  It was important psychologically to beat the team that had won three straight series earlier this season. Now the Phillies know they can play with Atlanta.

- Atlanta was shut-out in their two losses in Philadelphia. Jake Arrieta again pitched well , with Siranthony Dominguez and Hector Neris finishing up the 4-0 win. Even though Neris got the save in the 9th, it was Dominguez who got the key outs in the 7th and 8th innings. It's obvious the kid is now the secret weapon in the bullpen, the hammer, the one to get the big outs at the most crucial times.

- The Braves travel to Boston this weekend to take on the powerful Red Sox, while the Phillies stay home to face the Blue Jays. Advantage Phillies. First place this weekend?

-A little over 27,000 at the ballpark last night. Better crowd. Weather is just getting nice. Kids are still in school. Fans are starting to believe in the team. So, 27,000 fans in the stands is a great start.

- The Dude, Lenny Dykstra, was arrested on gun charges and drugs. Again. Dykstra was always a little messed up and is still messed up. He has not been invited to come back for the Phillies'  25th anniversary of the great 1994 Phillies team. Nice celebration but Dutch Daulton died, and now Dykstra is in trouble, so two key figures of Macho Row won't be there.

- The Washington Capitols finally broke the ice and made it to the Stanley Cup finals, winning at Tampa Bay on Wednesday night. They will take on the underdog, expansion Vegas Golden Knights for the Cup. The Caps may be emotionally spent after a tough series against the Lightning, whereas Vegas has been resting since dispatching Winnipeg a few days ago. The Cinderella story continues as the Golden Knights will win the Cup in six games.

- Meanwhile, in the NBA, the Celtics won again at home, where they are undefeated in the playoffs, Cleveland win probably win Game 6 at home, which will set up a winner-take-all Game 7 back in Boston. As much as I hate to say it the Celts look like a team of destiny. Will LeBron single-handedly  push the Cavaliers to the finals?

- Golden State lost game 4 at home, as the Rockets tied their series at 2-2. Houston has home court advantage again, with 2 of the last 3 games in Houston. Still, I see the Warriors winning somehow and moving on.

- I really don't care about the NFL and the national Anthem thing. All the owners did with their recent vote to force players to stand for the anthem was bring the topic to light yet again. It had faded away somewhat as the football season played out. now, fans will be wondering if players/team will purposely violate the league rules. Will players stay in their locker room for the anthem and protest?

I watch football to forget about social issues for three hours. I wish everyone would get back to the game, and try to make the game better.

- Baseball: The Yankees and the Red Sox will be in a war all summer. Wouldn't surprise me if the Yanks, Bosox and Astros all win 100 games this season.  The Cubs have fallen 4 games in back of the surprising brewers in NL Central, with Pittsburgh and St. Louis also falling back. Will it be Milwaukee's year or will they fade like they did in 2017? Colorado has taken over the top spot in NL West form Arizona, but look out for the giants and Dodgers, who are hovering below the surface, only a few games back. I see the West as being tight all season, with any of the four teams capable of winning the division. With all of their injuries, give the Dodgers credit for creeping back near the top, but will those same injuries keep them form first place in the end.

PHILLY SPORTS CPRNER- PHILLIES, EAGLES

- Disappointing loss to Braves last night, dropping the Phillies back to 1 1/2 games behind Atlanta. Musty win tonight against the braves, Difference in two full games. A Phils' loss leaves them 2 1/2 games in second place; a win leaves the team only 1/2 game behind and has the Phillies  finally beating  Atlanta in a series. They don't play again until late September. In fact, the teams play the final three games of the season at Citizens Bank Park.

- Quick assessment: Santana- defense sucks. He made his 4th error in four games. A supposed Gold Glove first baseman, Santana has been a disappointment so far. Yes he has hit some homers and is near the lead in team RBIs  but he also has a paltry .195 batting average. Plus his signing forced Rhys Hoskins into left field.

Kingery- huge disappointment. Scott hit a ringing double off the left field wall last night but overall has struggled. Maybe his role as utility guy has hurt him at the plate, but he has been the regular shortstop since J.P. Crawford was injured and Kingery still struggles.  I was excited when the organization signed him to a 9-year contract and brought him north with the club. Now, looking back 20/20, maybe Kingery did need a little more time at Lehigh Valley. Now, it would be embarrassing to send him down to the minors. You almost have to play him and hope he adjusts.

Franco- lounging a the ball again. Sure, he got two hits last night, and it's great he is trying to hit the ball  the opposite way, but it looks like he is trying to pull the ball and is flailing at pitches low and outside. Franco has overall played well this season. He is a streaky player and let's hope he is not getting into bad habits again.

Albies- young second baseman for Atlanta has power ( he is tied with the National League lead in homers at 14 with Bryce Harper).and lightning speed. He will be a thorn in the Phillies' side for years to come.

McCarthy- an average pitcher who happens to be 4-0 this year against the Phils. Luckily they won't see McCarthy until late September.

Hoskins- Needs to take a day off as he continues to struggle at the plate. Is it a sophomore slump? He is 3rd in the NL in strike-outs. That stat says a lot about his woes. Hoskins always seems to be behind in the count. He rarely swings at the first pitch, even a fastball in his wheelhouse. Yet he is also swinging at low and away pitches out of the strike zone. He has been a disappointment. He needs to adjust and hasn't so far. Kapler should take him out of the key No. 2 spot in the batting order, at least until he gets hot.

- Basically, the Phillies beat themselves with their shoddy defense, the pitchers issuing too many walks and the hitters striking out in key situations.

- Tommy Greene on Phillies Post-game Live is no Ricky Bottalico. Greene has no strong opinions and comes across wishy-washy. I'll take Ricky Bo and his honesty any day.

- Tonight is undoubtedly the biggest game of the season. Win and you are still on Atlanta's ass. Lose and the Braves have some breathing room. With Jake Arrieta pitching tonight, at home, I'll take my chances with the Phils.

- The Eagles opened OTAs yesterday and made major news all day:

* The team released linebacker Mychal Kendricks. They save over $ 7 million on the salary cap. His release leaves the club a little thin at linebacker, as new LB Paul Worrilow hurt his knee during work-outs

* A report came out that Cleveland offered the overall No. 35 pick in the NFL draft for QB Nick Foles. Foles turned down the deal. I don't blame him. Who wants to play for the Browns? I wonder who the Birds would've picked in that spot? No, if they do want to trade Foles down the road they can get a better deal.

* Brian Dawkins left the organization. He will remain a consultant but wants to move to Florida and do other things in life. Good for him. I can see Dawk being a General Manager someday.

* Carson Wentz looked great in workouts. Still a long way til Labor Day but is it possible that Wentz may play in the season opener against the Falcons? Seems like Wentz has a chip on his shoulder and wants to prove a point. Hopefully he listens to the doctors and remembers the big picture.

IN THE NEWS- NATION'S LARGEST EMPLOYER MISSES DISABILITY HIRING GOAL

Disability Scoop offers the following..

The U.S. government is falling short on a plan to dramatically increase hiring of people with intellectual disability and other conditions, according to a new report.

Just 1 percent of the federal workforce had so-called "targeted disabilities' in 2015. That's down fro, 1.05 percent on 2003 and "far below" a government goal of 2 percent.

The figures come from an annual report out this month from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on diversity in the federal workforce.

Targeted disabilities include intellectual disability, psychiatric disability and other conditions that have historically been associated with high rates of unemployment and underemployment.

Of those with targeted disabilities who were working for the federal government, the EEOC found they were likely to be employed at low pay grades.

Overall the report notes that more than 200,000 federal workers- or about 8.5 percent- had a disability in 2015.

Under an EEOC rule, 12 percent of those working at each government agency should be people with disabilities and 2 percent should have targeted conditions.

"Work remains before the federal government may be considered a model employer," the report states.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES

_ It was the biggest game at Citizens Bank Park in at least 7 years. The Phillies beat Atlanta, 3-0, and moved to within 1/2 game of 1st place in National league East. The Phils go to 27-18 with the win and improve to 17-6 at home this season. Here are the highlights:

- Nick Pivetta again pitched brilliantly- seven innings of shut-out ball. Ruban Amaro Jr's deal of getting Pivetta from the nationals for Jonathan Papelbon is proving to be a great move. Amaro jr. should also be given credit to obtaining Williams and Alfaro from Texas for Cole Hamels, who may be coming back anyway after the July 31st trade deadline. Like Vince Valasquez ( who pitches tonight against the Baby Braves). Pivetta has learned how to pitch, not just throw because he's got a big arm.

- Williams and Altherr had the key hits against Atlanta, and Herrera started a new on-base streak with two hits. Hoskins continues to struggle at the plate but made a beautiful, rolling, tumbling catch in left field.

- Even though Hector Neris got the save with a rare 1-2-3 9th inning, Siranthony Dominguez got the key out in the 8th inning, working thru the heart of Atlanta's batting order. That shows you the confidence that the Phillies coaches have in the kid. Dominguez gave up his first hit in the big leagues but he still hasn't surrendered his first run.

- Will struggling Scott Kingery go back to his utility role when J.P. Crawford returns soon?

- Both Washington and the Mets won as well, staying close in NL East. When the Braves leave Philly they head up to Fenway Park in Boston to face the Red Sox, while the Phils stay home to play the blue Jays. Advantage Phillies.

- The defense improved last night for the team, which played sloppy defense in St. Louis over the weekend. First baseman Santana and shortstop Kingery have particularly been ugly on defense lately, giving opponents extra outs and putting more pressure on the starting pitching.

- It was a gorgeous spring night, the first warm evening in a long time. The first place team in your division is in town. The crowd was announced at 21,000, a bummer since the club is in surprising contention. Why such a sparse crowd? Weekday night? Kids still in school? Super Bowl hangover.?Fans don't want to buy into Fool's Gold again and need to see more before investing their time and money? Games too long and boring for millinials?   Need big name like Machado to really get excited?

IN THE NEWS- FEDS EYE NEW RULES ON FLYING WITH SERVICE ANIMALS

From Disability Scoop..

Citing " significant concerns" from people with disabilities and others, federal airline regulators are weighing big changes to rules for service animals in flight.

The U.S. Department of Transportation said this month that it wants feedback from the public on possible alterations to service animal regulations under the Air Carrier Access Act.

Specifically, transportation officials want to know if emotional support animals, psychiatric service animals and other types of service animals should be treated differently from each other and if there should be limits on the species,  size or number of service animals that can fly with a person. In addition, the Transportation Department notice asks if owners should be required to confirm that their service animal is trained and questions if leashes or harnesses should be mandated.

The request for public comment comes after several major air carriers moved in recent months to issue new policies on service and emotional support animals following a significant uptick in passengers bringing such animals aboard. Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and American Airlines have all announced policies since the start of the year that they are designed to curtail problems with biting, urination and other misbehavior..

"The department recognizes the integral role that service animals play in the lives of many individuals with disabilities and wants to ensure seamless access to air transportation for individuals with disabilities while also helping to deter the fraudulent use of animals not qualified as service animals," the Transportation Department said in announcing its effort to seek public feedback

Previously, a Transportation Department advisory committee tasked with addressing accessibility was unable to react a consensus on how to tackle the issues surrounding service animals on airlines

In addition to soliciting comment, transportation officials also issued an :interim statement of enforcement priorities" this month related to service animals outlining the agency's current procedures.

The Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on Traveling By Air with Service Animals is up for public comment for 45 days.

IDOL CHATTER- FINALS

- As predicted, Maddie Poppe won American Idol last night. She had the perfect formula: a silky-smooth voice, excellent song choices, a simple , charming style, and she's cute too. Maddie should have a nice career as a folksy-type  singer/songwriter, but I do think someone else who didn't win will have a better career.

Will it Cade as a rocker? Michael J. on Broadway? Gabby and Caleb on Country Music radio?  Will Ada Vox audition again for Idol next season, as he/she has done 12 times before?

All in all, it was a solid group of singers but lacked one special singer who stood out  head and shoulders above everyone.

- I liked the immediate vote this season. The year went too fast, so hopefully they stretch out the year like before. - The judges got better as the year went on. Katy was unpredictable and fun. not guarding her emotions. Lionel was the mature, teacher-type, never saying anything bad about anyone at any time. Luke was just there most of the time.

-  Nice seeing former contestants last night during the lavish finale. Jimmy Kimmel was funny. The duets were better than Sunday night. Entertaining stuff. And they drug out the results, as expected, right til 10:57 EST.

- The surprise was Caleb's late announcement that he and Maddie are an item. They work fast, as they only met during Hollywood week, which was only a few weeks ago. We knew that Cade and Gabby were a couple, but Caleb and Maddie? Idol gave both trips to Hawaii. Perfect getaway. America's sweethearts, like the Royals?

- The season was fun. Auditions were fun but Hollywood week was too long.  Idol is fun to watch but even more fun during the week to discuss with others. I started washing it again this year after not watching for several years. Glad I did.

- Finally, will Philadelphia get an audition this summer, with so many local talent going so far? Already looking forward to next year!

IDOL CHATTER FINALS

- Maybe it was nerves, pressure, stress or the bad originals songs, but Idol was lacking last night. Tonight the winner is crowned in this shortened season ( feels like Hollywood week just ended).  I felt as Katy Perry did- this is the top 3? Disappointing. Even Cade or Ada Vox would've brought much more passion and life to the Finals.

- It wasn't her best night but, in my opinion, Maddie cemented her crown as the new American Idol. She had a solid, if not spectacular night. More so then Maddie having a brilliant night, she just did enough not to blow it, as the other two had off-nights.

I was hoping Maddie would pick either "God Only knows", "Brand New Key' or "Homeward Bound" as her favorite season song, but she went with an original, and she did well, especially up again the awful other original single

Maddie has a silky-smooth voice, is matured beyond her years, appears calm and composed ( although she admits to poor self-confidence) and is sweet and cute. Who needs more?

The only thing that worries me about Maddie is her somewhat "who-cares" attitude, falsely proclaiming  that fame didn't matter to her. Sure it does! Why are you on American Idol if wealth and fame were not desired?

- Caleb looked stiff and awkward on stage again. Someone get the Country Guy a choreographer or a drink to loosen up! Plus his original song was terrible. The song itself and the performance. Caleb strained and struggled to sing it. ( actually i wouldn't buy any of the singles, and thought it was unfair to strap the young contestants with tunes they clearly hate, all because some record executive or company wants to make tons of money from these "singles"). .

- Gabby has a good voice and can belt out a song, but she seems too full of herself now, too programmed, and tries to always sound and look like Carrie Underwood. The best surprise of the night occurred after she sang Journey's "Don't Stop Believing'", when lead singer Steve Perry was introduced in the crowd. That's big because Perry is  somewhat known as a recluse.Perry thought her rendition of his song was the best he had ever heard. I beg to differ. Too glitz and production-like.

- The judges, especially Katy, were more honest last night. Perry sounded like Simon Cowell-ish. Lionel has not said a bad word about anyone all season. Instead, he supports, encourages and prefers to teach. Hopefully this honesty carries over into next season, as to sugarcoat constructive criticism makes more sense.

- The hometown segments were OK, reminding me these singers have lives outside of Idol, loved ones who care, and it was nice to get away from all the glitz.

- The winner tonight will be and should be Maddie. Not even close. I will be shocked and disappointed if Caleb or Gabby win.

- So, as we reach the end, the judges did alright overall.  After getting their feet wet, the judges need to get more honest, and they know it. Not everyone is great. Why kid America? We have ears too, even tough we not be "professional talent evaluators. "

The season ended too soon, as it feels like Hollywood week just ended. ABC needs to stretch out the series more. Interest in the show seemed to build momentum toward the end. I liked the instant voting. Tonight the overnight vote is back, which is fine for the two-night finale I think we are going to see more and more of this Billy Bones guy, as ABC seems pretty high on him..

I didn't get bringing back 4 losers to fill a segment of forgettable original songs. There is a reason why they were voted off in the first place.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, PLAYOFFS

- Tough to win a series in Baseball Heaven, otherwise known as St. Louis. So I'm OK with a split of a four-game series as the Phillies achieved over the weekend. The Braves had an incredible walk-off, come from behind win over Miami on Sunday, which gave Atlanta a 1 1/2 game lead over the Phils in National League East. The Phillies are 26-18 going into their huge series with Atlanta.

- Cards rookie right-hander Jack Flarhety threw a brilliant game against Philly, giving up only one run on  two hits with 13 strike-outs in 7 2/3 innings. He looks like a keeper, yet another prospect from the rich Cardinal farm system.

- Obudel Herrera's on-base streak was snapped at 45. Still not sure why "safely on-base" only means hits and walks, not reaching base via error or passed ball.Hell of a run, Odulbel!

- After a gutty, gritty win on Saturday, the Phillies looked listless Sunday, not to mention over-matched vs. the t. Louis rookie. The team still strikes out too much. They don't ply small ball well, not bunting with men on base. They played sloppy defense all weekend. When past Phillie teams were good, pristine defense ruled ( Bowa, Maddox, Schmidt, Rollins, Utley).  The club must shore up their defense to contend. Errors and mental lapses in the field put extra stress on the pitching staff, keep opposing rallies alive, and stifle momentum.

- Since the team doesn't face Atlanta again until September, this home 3-game series is big. Payback time for the Braves, who are 6-3 over Philadelphia so far this season.

Key stretch of games vs. good teams coming up. Braves, Blue Jays, Dodgers Giants and Cubs all ahead. Lets see how much of the Phils' fast start was them or a relatively easy schedule.

- Amazing! The expansion Vegas Golden Knights are going to the Stanley Cup finals. The Knights were 500-1 before the NHL season began to win the championship. The Flyers need to sake note how a really good goalie can make such a big difference.

- Golden State destroyed Houston to go up 2-1 in their NBA Western Finals.  The Warriors are so good at home. I don't see the Rockets coming back. Golden State has playoff experienced, big-game players, like Steph Curry, who know when to step-up.  Meanwhile, Cleveland tries to tie their Eastern Finals series with the Celtics. I think the Cavs take Game 4 and send it back it Boston, all tied 2-2 for a crucial Game 5.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES

- Manager Gabe Kapler called Saturday's 7-6 victory over St. Louis perhaps the biggest win of the year. After losing a 3-0 lead, the Phils fell behind but kept fighting, eventually pulling out the key win in the 8th inning. Here are the highlights:

- Scott Kingery got a much-needed big hit in the crucial 8th inning, crushing a triple off the left field wall, knocking in the tying run. There was thought of Kingery being sent down to Lehigh Valley to clear his head. It may still happen when J.P. Crawford returns soon, Hopefully Kingery goes on a roll. He brings energy and speed to the offense. He may end up being super-utility guy again/ It seems we have seen little of him at second base, his real position, mainly because Cesar Hernandez is playing so well.

- Odubel Herrera continues to play like a superstar and an All-Star. He hit a big home run to put the Phillies ahead, 3-0, over the Redbirds. He is fun to watch and in is such a tremendous groove, anything can happen. He doesn't have the raw power as a Mike Schmidt or Ryan Howard, but he is getting into the same picture as someone you can't take your eyes off, someone you stop and watch, no matter what you're doing.

- Siranthony Dominguez continues to shine. He earned a six-out save over the Cards, He has hit to give up a hit or run in his brief big league career. He throws 99 m.p.h., throws strikes and seems to have nerves of steel for a young kid. He should be the closer. Speaking of which, kudos to Kapler for sticking with the kid in the 9th. He didn't do the predictable in bringing in Neris for the last out as he did on Thursday might.

- A lot of baseball fans hate St. Louis. True, their Midwest fans may think they know the game better than anyone else, living there in Baseball Heaven. The Cardinals never finish last, are always in contention, and have won the second most world championships (16) to the Yankees. But I have to be honest- the Cards will always hold a special place in my heart. When I was laid-up as a kid, word got around baseball of my plight  and during the summer of 1966, teams started sending me items in the mail. Autographed baseballs and pictures, stickers, a media guide, St. Louis went out of their way to be nice to a sick kid they didn't even know.

Growing up, my next door neighbor was a huge Cardinal fan. Wore the red hat, the bright red jacket and good-natured joked with me when St. Louis  often won, especially in 1964 when the Phillies infamously imploded and the Cards stole the National League pennant. It was fun when the Redbirds played in the East and squared-off against the Phillies on a more regular basis.

- The Phils , when they won championships, were good defensively. Maddox, Schmidt, Bowa, Rollins and Utley were all defensive stalwarts in championship years. Recently the defense has been sloppy. Fundamentally, the club has been poor even coming out of spring training. Bad defense puts extra pressure on the young pitching staff. The offense has to work harder to catch up. Most fans want to see home runs and lots of offense. Pitching has always been key to success. But solid defense seems underrated. Hopefully the Phillies shore-up their defense if they intend to be contenders this summer.

- With the team playing well, giving us fun baseball, enjoyable entertainment  and hope for now and the future, hopefully attendance at Citizens Bank Park will pick up. I don't know if it will ever approach the record nightly sell-out crowds  earlier in the century, but it would be nice to see the seats full again this summer. Warm days and nights, the kids out of school and good baseball all add up to bigger crowds at the Bank.

- Rhys Hoskins continues to struggle in his sophomore season. Imagine the offense when he gets hot! His power surge was in August last year, so there is faith that Hoskins will come alive as the weather gets nicer and warmer.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER-PHILLIES, NHL

- The Phillies had been playing so well recently, they were due for a clunker. hopefully they got it all out of the way with a 12-4 defeat in St. Louis last night. The team played a sloppy, ugly game, filled with errors, mental miscues and bad luck.  Jake Arrieta went three innings and dropped to 3-2 on the season. Arrieta had pitched very well his last two starts, with Hector Neris blowing saves each time.

With the loss, the Phils dropped to 25-17 but stayed in second place in NL East, 1/2 game behind Atlanta. They have the third best record in the National league, on pace to win 97 games. After Sunday's final game in St. Louis, the team comes home to face the Braves in a big three-game series. The Phils need to play well, as they won't play Atlanta again until September.

- Pedro Florimon was the Phillies' MVP in the defeat. Florimon hit a home run and also pitched a scoreless/hitless inning late in the game.

- Scott Kingery continues to struggle. He made a key error during the Cardinals' 4-run 3rd inning. Should he be sent down to Lehigh Valley to clear his head, especially when J.P. Crawford returns soon?

- Another crucial player is scuffling too, yet the Phillies are shining brightly. Rhys Hoskins has fewer home runs (5) than Cesar Hernandez (6). He strikes out too much. He doesn't seem to be as patient as last summer. Imagine this offense when Hoskins gets hot?

- Zach Eflin goes this afternoon against the Cards, with Aaron Nola pitching the finale on Sunday. Looks like Pivetta, Valasquez and Arrieta  start the big Atlamta series.

- Odubul Herrera  continues to play like a superstar. He has now reached base in 44 consecutive games. I used to dislike his hot dog style- flipping the bat, his antics in the field and on the base paths. But, maybe because he is playing so great, I like him. At least he has some personality. This current Phillies team is a nice collection of good guys, but they are boring in interviews and in their commercials.Never know what Herrera will say or do. Sometimes to can't keep your eyes off him. After watching the 1993 highlights during the rain delay last night, and remembering the colorful characters such as John Kruk, Darren Daulton and Lenny Dykstra, it got me to thinking how much fun they were to watch- on and off the field.  Sports is meant to be entertaining, and Herrera certainly is entertaining. He may be painful to watch sometimes but you can never take your eyes off hum.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES

- Give the Phillies credit. They are now 25-16, 9 games over .500 for the first time since 2001, and only 1/2 game behind Atlanta in National League East. Gotta give new manager Gabe Kapler credit for some of this success, but you also can't ignore the fact he has made stupid moves all season.

After a rocky first week of the season, where there were calls for his firing, Kapler has settled down somewhat. He still uses analytics but doesn't make bold, crazy, drastic, head-scratching moves like early in the year. Until Wednesday in Baltimore.

After Kapler mysteriously removed Ramos form the game with 2 out sin the 9th inning, and after Ramos easily struck-out the only two Orioles he faced, the struggling Hector Neris was put into the game to get  the final out and the save. He did, getting the save as well, kinda stealing it away from Ramos, who did all the heavy lifting. Camden Yards was pretty empty by that time, with the visiting Phillies up 4-1 over Baltimore. The majority of the fans remaining were Phillies fans. When Kapler made his dumb move the Philly fans lustily booed his ass, rightfully so.

Some have wondered, because the team is winning, if Kapler deserved to be booed. Bandwagon jumpers, like the caller Levi on WIP Sports Radio, don't think Kapler did anything wrong. If Neris would've blown the save in Baltimore Kapler would've been killed with criticism. Instead he is praised by certain clueless fans.

No, Kapler mad e a stupid move. I don't trust him. I'm afraid he will revert back to the Kapler of old in big games. Just when I was starting to trust the guy he makes a questionable move to shake my confidence in him again.

The Phillies won in the 70s despite Danny Ozark, and again in the 2000s despite Charlie Manual. This talented group of young Phillies can win games on their own. I just don't want Kapler to lose games for them.

- Look where the Phillies are now. All this success without key young guys like Hoskins and Kingery playing well. Is is because they haven't adjusted to the National League pitchers? Or does it have something to do with each playing positions in the field which are not their familiar spots in the field?

- Odubal Herrera continues to play like a bona fide all-star, on-base now 43 consecutive games. And to think he was benched the first game of the season! If he continues to play hard and hustle, he may actually erase all the negative feelings about his style in the past and become a fan favorite in the future. Speaking better English will also help endear him to fans.

PHILLIES PHODER- BALTIMORE TRIP

I was there to see the Phillies beat the Orioles yesterday afternoon, 4-1, at a rain-soaked Oriole Park at Camden Yards. It was my first time there, and here are my impressions on the game and the trip:

- Attendance was announced at 29,000 fans. No way there were that many people in that beautiful stadium. Over half were Phillies fans.  They made the trek down I-95 in the drizzly morning. It sprinkled all day, and at one time we had to seek cover as the rain became heavier.  It eventually subsided to a  drizzle again, but picked up again on the way home.

- Even though everything worked out in the end, Kapler taking Ramos out in the 9th inning, i favor of a struggling Neris, was a stupid move. He deserved all the boos he got from the fans in Baltimore. He can't be doing crazy stuff again and not expect the fans to react. I still don't trust him but the team is eight games over .500 for the first time since 2011, only a game behind Atlanta for the lead in National league East.

His reasoning was to give "Neris confidence." What about Ramos' confidence, after striking out the only two batters he faced on six pitches? What about the fan's confidence that he isn't going to screw-up again as he did the first week of the season. Sadly, he will never get away from basic analytics, rather than using common sense. It will burn him someday.

- I met Gregg Murphy, one of the Phillies' announcers and roving reporter, at Baltimore during the game. Great guy! I envy his job. Must be a blast!

- It was weird watching the Phillies bat first and seeing them wear the road gray uniforms. My first time ever seeing the club play on the road.

- Interesting differences between Oriole Park and Citizens Bank park: The Orioles have their statues of former greats in one place together in a little park outside the outfield wall. Nice. The Phillies have their statues sprinkled all over the ballpark, which makes sense that the statue of Richie Ashburn should be located in Ashburn Alley.  Another difference is the scoreboards. Philadelphia's is much larger as it the video screen. Both stadiums have their own little charms and quirks.

- Oriole Park is nice because it's downtown. Lots of trees. Intimate place. Close to the action. Has character with the  gigantic old B.O. Railroad warehouse hovering  beyond the right field wall. I still like the overall atmosphere of Citizens Bank Park ( maybe I'm a little biased).

Still, it was very cool to see the first stadium which started it all in the 90s. Without Oriole Park at Camden Yards, other parks that followed- Coors Field, Citizens Bank Park, PNC Park- may not look as they do now.

Oriole personnel, form ushers to parking people, were extremely nice and friendly. Hardly any traffic down I-95 in the morning, with a direct route to the park. Unlike what I expected the parking was great plenty of -accessible spots near the stadium. $10 to park in Lot A was affordable.

The rain was a bummer but it didn't dampen the spirit of Phillies' fans, who were everywhere. Now I won't feel so bad when I see another teams' fans invade our place.Oriole fans are kinda down these days, plus Baltimore fans aren't as "angry" as, let's say, New York or Dallas' fans.

Getting out of the stadium area after the game was a major hassle, but probably not much different than at home. The ride home always seems longer, made even more tedious by the steady rain showers.

- As for the game, Hernandez, Franco and  Williams were key offensively. Pivetta pitched brilliantly and is making his case to stay in the rotation. Jared Eichoff is due back soon off the disabled list. It's a good problem to have, too many good starters. If no steady closer is found in-house, why not explore closer options in July before the trade deadline? Britton from Baltimore ( if healthy) or Cincinnati's Inglesias are possibilities.

- It was an eye-opener, but a fan in an enemy ballpark. I'm sure it would be much different up at Citi Field in New York or a stadium where the fans can be more aggressive. But I will say this- Phillies' fans  ( to the best of my knowledge) were not obnoxious. I've heard Met and Cub fans come into the Bank and taunt and swear at players and Phillies' fans. I'm not saying our fans are angels, but yesterday was a taste of fandom on the road and it was OK. Granted it was Baltimore, where there isn't much of  a rivalry and the Baltimore fans don't seem to care.

- I hit the men's room before leaving Oriole Park. It was packed. No surprise there.  What caught my attention was the "Fly Eagles Fly" chants along with E-A-G-L-E-S! A group of Philly fans were in there, decked out in Phillies gear but talking Birds to a few Baltimore fans. Ravens fans' answers were "Well, we have two championships", whereas the Eagle fans responded "But we are the reigning Super Bowl champs!" That shut-up the Baltimore guys. It was good-natured kidding, but I'm afraid that's the feeling around the NFL- the Eagles were a fluke, got lucky and won't contend this season. So the Birds need to win it again and put that kind of talk to bed.

THIS DAY IN PHILLY SPORTS HISTORY- MAY 16

A Preakness Tradition

As soon the Preakness winner has been declared official, a painter climbs a ladder to the top of a replica of the old Clubhouse cupola. He then paints the colors of the winning owners' silks on the jockey and horse which are part of the weathervane on top.

This tradition started in 1909 after the original weathervane was struck by lightning and destroyed. It was replaced and coated with the winning colors of 1909 winner, Effendi.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- SPORTS BETTING, PHILLIES,PLAYOFFS

-Yesterday will always go down as a day to remember in sports history. Why? The Supreme Court opened the door for  legalized sports betting to occur. In New Jersey they are already geared up for this type of gambling, which can start possibly by the end of the week. Pennsylvania won't be far behind, with sports betting allowed in casinos and racetracks, among other venues.

Attendance will grow at these establishments. TV ratings will soar as regular, everyday fans will finally have an easier time betting on their favorite teams. Yesterday's ruling will revolutionize sports and the world as we know it.

Think of the possibilities. Instead of using a bookie to bet on games, you only need to visit your local casino or race track- or use your phone, laptop or PC. There may even be betting kiosks in stadiums in time. Maybe you could wager money on a game at your local Wawa while your'e getting your morning paper and coffee. The access will be incredible so the state can get your money easy and quick.

There will always be office pools at work and betting slips. But now a gambler can bet on one or as many games as he or she would like. Bookies will still be around, offering credit and special deals. Billions of dollars are bet on the Super Bowl every year now, on all kinds of bets from the Coin Toss to the length of the National Anthem. Those simple bets, as well as the odd ones, will still be there, only everything will be much easier to wager on.

For me, a trip to Valley Forge Casino- only 10 minutes away, will do the trick. Or I can set up an account on the phone or computer and wager that way. As long as fans don't bet over their head it will be fun and increase interest in sporting events.

As with anything, initially, everyone will bet on something. The novelty will die down, but like Fantasy Football, which has grown in popularity, sports betting will only increase as well. Safe to say, if I take an extra $100 to a casino, and instead of putting it into the slots, I may play a few games instead, feeling i have a better chance at winning and a little control and expertise over my money.

Wonder what Pete Rose is thinking? He was banned from baseball for betting on sports. Of course, he was a player/manager and had influence over the outcome. And, as we now know, Rose had other issues too.

I'm sure there will be enough for everyone but picking a venue in which to do business will generate lots of competition, which is also good for customers. Let's face it: most fans already have bets on games anyway, be it thru an office pool or friendly wager with family and friends. This makes it more exciting and legal, so life will go on, better than ever. The states will make money. Jobs will be created. There's much more good that can happen than bad.  Just imagine all the money that could've been made locally if sports betting was allowed during the Eagles' magical season?

I was in Las Vegas 15 years ago. I happen to be there  the opening Sunday in September of the NFL season. It was fascinating to watch the jam-packed bettors at the sports book in a casino wager their money and root on their bets.Even at 10 in the morning on a Sunday, while others may be praying in church, here were countless gamblers wagering on football hot and heavy. To think the same scenario will play out every Sunday in the fall around my backyard is exciting.

- The Phillies start a brief two-game series with the Orioles tonight at Camden Yards. Nick Pivetta pitches in Game 1 as the team tries to close the gap between themselves and Atlanta. The Braves play in Chicago vs. the Cubs. so the odds are in Philly's favor to make up some ground during the next few days.

- In playoffs, Vegas tied their series with Winnipeg at 1-1. Will we actually see an expansion team play for the Stanley Cup? In basketball, Golden State took an early 1-0 lead over Houston in the semi-finals of the NBA Western Conference,The Warriors are too good. I do think Cleveland will rebound from their Game 1 loss in Boston and make a series of it.

- Tonight the NBA draft lottery occurs, with the Sixers having over a 97% chance of keeping their pick. If it falls at No.1 or between 4 and 12, the Sixers keep it and would  have to surrender their selection next year to Boston is there a player who can help the 76ers at, let's say, No. 10?.

DAILY PHILLIES TRIVIA

How many one-hitters did Steve Carlton throw in his career?

Answer: Six ( he never pitched a no-hitter).

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, NBA, NHL

- Key win for the Phillies Sunday afternoon. Had to finally beat the Mets and a division foe. Phils stay a game behind Atlanta in NL East. Nola goes 6-1. Nick Williams was  the hero by blasting a pinch-hit 3-run homer. Ramos closes in 9th inning in favor of Neris. Shaky outing but I'll take Ramos any day. Dominguez again excels in set-up role, getting thru Mets' heart of order. What will it take to give the kid a shot at closer's role?

- Early on  Sunday's ballgame looked too familiar. Runners left on base, no clutch hitting by Phillies. They did get Jacob deGrom out of the game after only one inning. He labored in the first, throwing over 40 pitches.

- The home stand finished with a 5-1 record. The upcoming road trip is for the birds, as the Phils take on the Orioles and Cardinals. Baltimore is in last in AL East, but are playing better. Manny Machado, hopefully a future Phillie, is playing well. Pivetta and Valasquez go at Camden Yards. St. Louis is lurking near the top in NL Central, as always. A four-game series with the Cards in Baseball Heaven should be an interesting weekend. Arrieta and Nola both pitch in St. Louis, which give the Phillies a good shot of at least earning a split in the series.

- Look out! The Nationals swept their four-game series at Arizona against the Diamondbacks. They remain only 1/2 game behind the Phils. When the Phillies blew a game a week ago Sunday at Washington, it gave the Nats momentum to win 6 of 7 on the West Coast. Washington comes home but have the red-hot Yankees ( a World Series preview?)  and disappointing Dodgers at home this week. Even on the road, I like the Phillies' chances against t the cellar-dweller Orioles than the first place Yanks.

- The Celtics destroyed the Cavs in Game 1 of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals over the weekend. I really didn't care after the Sixers' disappointing exit from the playoffs. I'm waiting for the draft lottery soon and the actual draft itself in June.

- I wanted to watch some NHL playoff hockey, but couldn't find the game. Is hockey still that minor league that playoff games aren't on a major network? Anyway, Washington beat the Lightning twice in Tampa Bay and took solid control of the series. A Caps- Jets Stanley Cup final ahead?

- Great news that sports betting will now be legal. Wondering if the existing casinos in Pennsylvania will now make a sports betting area for gamblers?Nice to know that if you want to lay a bet on the Eagles, you don't have to fly all the way to Vegas or hook-up with your local bookie.

THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY- MAY 14

R. U. kidding me?

On this date in 1874, Harvard defeats McGill University of Montreal, 3-0, at Cambridge, Massachusetts, in an 11-man-per-side game that resembled soccer but permitted running with the ball when pursued. It was arguably the first rudimentary football game ever played.

IDOL CHATTER- THE SEMI-FINALS

Hard to believe the finals for American Idol are next week already. The season seems rushed. Seems like only yesterday it was Hollywood week.  Maybe next season, with the show being renewed, they will take it slower. I do like the immediate voting. The results are exciting at the end, with the drama building.

- I was right- and I was wrong. I didn't think rocker Cade would win. David Cook was the exception, but generally rockers get far but are not the ultimate Idols. Look at Adam Lambert and Daughtry. They have solid careers, as will Cade, but they didn't win the whole thing.  Cade was not good the last few weeks. It was fun to see Cade make Carrie Underwood blush.

- I thought Michael j. would win. I was wrong. i guess America got tired of the glitzy, big show number ( as they did with Ada Vox). Hard to say where Michael J. will end up. Maybe Broadway?

- Maddie should win now. She's got a silky-smooth voice. She's an old-fashioned old soul.  I love her song choices, from "Brand New Key" to last night- "I Told You So" and "God Only Knows." Plus she's cute. A little insecure, but I think that's why America likes her. No ego. Simple, no frills, coffee-house-type singer.  Refreshingly honest.

- Caleb may be her biggest competition. Lionel was right when he said you can close your eyes while listening to Caleb and recognize his voice. He's a simple guy too, funny. a bit awkward on stage, a Randy Travis-type of voice. Win or not, Caleb will have a good career in Nashville now.

- I'm surprised that Gabby made it. Her first song, she tried too hard to sound like Carrie Underwood. Better second song, doing Whitney Houston. As America seems to tire of the big, splashy number, I just don't think she will win, but Gabby should have a career in Country Music as a young Carrie.

- Speaking of Underwood, she looked fine to me. This was one of her first public appearances since her accident when she messed up her face pretty bad from a fall. Would she look different? Carrie is still beautiful, although i didn't like the song she sang last night, the title song form her upcoming album, "Cry Pretty." She screamed most of it.

- The judges came out Sunday night, proclaiming they were going to be more honest and "harder" during this judging phase. Maybe they have heard some of the backlash that they have been too nice all season. Still, either the performances were flawless last night, or the judges again wimped-out, their assessments were positive.I agree- you can't be negative if there is nothing to be negative about . Hopefully in the second season they will be more honest, ruthless and entertaining like Simon Cowell was.

- Next week the finals are a two-night event. It will be interesting if they chop it down to two contestants after Sunday, setting up the Monday show-down. There will be more drama both nights. Unlike "Dancing With The Stars," where the winning couple fox-trot off into the sunset, other than the normal summer tours, Idol's winner actually is important as, sooner or later, you're gonna hear that voice on the radio. Idol has a summer tour scheduled, with tickets already on sale to see the top 7 sing.

IN THE NEWS-TRUMP HOTEL SUED FOR ALLEGED ADA VIOLATIONS

From the Chicago Tribune

A Florida man is suing Trump International  Hotel & Tower Chicago for multiple alleged violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act, from improper grab bars in the restrooms to counters that were too tall at the hotel var.

Howard Cohan claims in the lawsuit filed late last week in Chicago federal court that he has neurological problems from spinal stenosis, and said it would be a "futile gesture" to return to the property as long as the violations exist. he last visited the hotel in August, according to the lawsuit.

Cohan, who live sin Palm Beach County, refers to himself in the lawsuit as a "tester" for discovering "discrimination against the disabled" in public accommodations. He has filed numerous lawsuits against businesses in Chicago and across the country, many of which have been settled.

Because the terms of settlement  are generally not disclosed, it is unclear if the businesses made any changes as a result of the lawsuits.

Cohan's attorney and Trump hotel executives did not immediately return requests for comment.

Cohan found the alleged violations at the Trump hotel in Chicago during three visits from 2015 to 2017, according to the lawsuit. beyond grab bars, the lawsuit claims several issues with restrooms in the lobby and at the 16th floor restaurant, including improperly positioned toilet paper dispensers, toilet seats, urinals and coat hooks.

According to the lawsuit, the mezzainine-level bar and 16th floor restaurant had counters that exceeded 36 inches in height, an ADA violation making it "impossible to service a person" with a disability. The 16th floor restaurant, formerly known as Sixteen, is closed for redesign, according to the hotel.

The ADA, a federal law that took effect in 1990, prohibits discrimination and mandates access for people with disabilities in public and private places open to the general public.

The 2010 ADA standards for accessible design spell out very specific requirements for restrooms, and are heavily cited in Cohan's lawsuit.

Cohan has filed several similar lawsuits against  Chicago hotels over the past three years, ranging from the Super 8 Motel in Naperville to The Peninsula Chicago. which features the city's most expensive rooms. Both cases were settled for undisclosed terms, according to court filings.

In March, Cohan filed a disability lawsuit against the Chicago Downtown Marriott, which is pending in Chicago federal court.

While hotels are a primary target, Cohan sued American Girl Place after visiting the retail store on North Michigan Avenue in 2015 over alleged ADA violations in its men's restroom. The case was settled in July 2016 for undisclosed terms.

"The problem is that when you settle one (case), there is a business next door," Kevin Fritz, an attorney who represented American Girl in the Cohan lawsuit, said recently. :This is a big issue right now. Given the amount of lawsuits that this person files, it seems like they tend to move from business to business.'

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER

- The Phillies were rained out last night against the Mets. The game will be made up as a single-admission doubleheader on August 16, as part of a five-game series.New Yoek fans ar ethe worst, rude and obnoxious. Imagine  those  stinkin'Mets' fans crawling down the turnpike in the heat of mid-August for five big games?

- Bug game today for the Phils on this Mother's Day. Don't want to lose yet again to the Mets and another NL East foe. Want to finish 5-1 on the home stand before heading to Baltimore and St. Louis this week.

- The Nationals have won 5 of 6 games on West Coast this week ( including 3 in a row at tough Arizona), thanks last Sunday to the Phillies and hector Neris, who blew a key game.

- Let's face it: Sixers' GM Brian Colangelo screwed up the Markelle Fultz pick and the draft last June. He poorly evaluated both Jayson Tatum and Fultz as players. Plus he gave Boston a high first round draft pick next year ( via Sacramento).I'm not a Sam Hinkie fan, but Colangelo is no genius either.

- Aftermath thoughts on Sixers' season: Game 2 loss to Boston was eventually the key to the series. Can't throw a game away and expect to make it up later. Can Fultz play? Is he physically hurt or a head-case? Will Ben Simmons improved his mid-range game? Who goes and who stays? What happens in free agency and the draft? Expectations will be high this fall. The Coach and GM need to step up.

- Ex-Phillie Charlie Morton struck out 14 Rangers Saturday night. Shame he got hurt so early in his brief Phillies stint. He never really had a chance to shine in Philadelphia.  Cole Hamels is also pitching better. Could he bound Philly-bound in July via deadline deal?

- It's hard for me to root for the Celtics in the NBA Eastern Conference Finals. The again, i don't want to see the Cavs or LeBron win either. Doesn't matter. The winner of the Warriors- Rockets series will win the NBA title in the end.

- Could it be Winnipeg vs. Washington for the Stanley Cup? I'm rooting for the expansion Vegas Golden Knights. It's hard to find the games on TV. Is hockey still a minor league sport without all the game son a major network?

- Will both the Red Sox and Yankees win 100 games? Close races in baseball everywhere. Surprise good teams: Mariners, Phillies, Pirates, Braves, A's. Surprise bad teams: Dodgers and Indians.

- Having a closer on a bad  baseball team is a luxury. Having a bad closer on a good baseball team is a killer. Phillies need a good closer to contend this summer.

- Ex-Phillie pitcher Jim (Kitty) Kaat purposes a unique fix for baseball: 7-inning games. it would benefit starting pitchers. A starter can go 5 innings, then turn it over to  a set-up guy and closer. Kaat believes the four-man rotation would return, and there wouldn't be a need for so many hurlers on a staff. 7-inning games would speed up the game, ideal for young fans and millinials. Record books would be effected but Kaat feels the records are tainted anyway, with the DH, inter league games and other changes in baseball within the last 40 years or so.  It will never happen, as the layer's union would never allow, but it's an interesting proposal.

Speaking of Kaat, he was a good pitcher and fun to watch. He won well over 200 games in his 25 years in baseball. He won the gold Glove 16 times. Kaat was known for pitching fast, many of his games completed in less than two hours. His motto was "Think long, think wrong."

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES,

- Hector Neris blew his second save in less than a week, and the Phillies lost a heart breaker to the hated Mets Friday night, 3-1. The Phils are now 22-16, still 1/2 game behind the braves, with New York and Washington creeping up on Philly and Atlanta. Against the National League East so far this early season, the Phillies are a woeful 7-14. They continue to struggle against the Mets, going 0-3 this year.

-I wrote it last Sunday, when Neris choked in Washington and the team suffered a frustrating loss to the Nationals. Neris blew it again last night, failing to protect a 1-0 lead in the 9th inning. Bad loss for the fans and players. Neris is a better 8th inning set-up guy than a closer. Why not let young Siranthony Dominguez close> Can he do any worse?

- True, the batters also failed in the clutch- again. Herrera, Hoskins and Santana all hit with the bases loaded and didn't come thru.Overall, the offense has been good but they let Mets starter Steven Matz off the hook all night.

- Shame that, for the second  consecutive start, Jake Arrieta pitched brilliantly and didn't get the victory. Wasted effort. If the bulllpen ( Neris) does its job, suddenly Arrieta is 5-1, along with Aaron Nola, and the Phillies carry momentum into first place. IfNneris does his job, the club has a 7-game winning streak. Instead, they need to beat Synderggard and drGrone ( weather permitting) to take the series. Psychologically, the Phillies need to start playing better against the Mets and Nats and not feel intimidated.

- Odubel Herrera crushed a 1st inning home run and now leads the National League in hitting with a lusty .360 average. He continues to play like an All-Star, reaching base in 40 consecutive games.

Riggs all over court

It was in 1973 that 55-year-old Bobby Riggs first challenged woman's tennis champion Margaret Court on Mother's Day ( May 13, 1973). Stating that woman tennis players are "overrated and overpaid," Riggs then went on to embarrass the world's number one woman player, 6-2, 6-1.

Billie Jean King, who earlier in the year declined Rigg's offer, agreed to play after witnessing the "Mother's Day Massacre," and in front of the largest crowd in tennis history, King dominated Riggs 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 in the famous "battle of the sexes" at the Houston Astrodome later in that year.

IN THE NEWS- ROBOT CLEARED TO ATTEND CLASS FOR STUDENT WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

This is from the Boston Herald..

A student with a disability at Hudson Public Schools will be able to participate in lessons and interact with other pupils through a robot attending class in the student's stead, U.S. Attorney Andrew E. Lelling's office announced this week.

Federal prosecutors and Hudson Public Schools struck a voluntary compliance agreement that Lelling's office said "will ensure effective communication for students with disabilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act."

The student had requested to use a robot that can see, hear and move around the classroom under the student's off-site control in order that the student participate in interactive classwork.

" In addition to facts and figures, students learn important social and collaborative skills in the classroom. As new technologies emerge that enable students with disabilities to be able to communicate effectively in classroom discussions and share more fully in those learning experiences, we must ensure that unnecessary and unlawful barriers do not inhibit their ability to fully participate in the classroom environment," Lelling said.

"We commend Hudson Public Schools for the proactive steps they have already taken to meet this goal, including allowing the student to use the auxiliary aid 'robot,' and for their cooperation throughout our investigation," he said.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, SIXERS, EAGLES

- Another win for the streaking Phillies, who swept another four-game series, this time from the San Francisco Giants. The team has swept two home four-game series already this young season, whereas they only swept a total of two four-game series between 2012-17.

The Phils are now 22-15, in second place in NL East, 1/2 game behind the Atlanta Braves. Philadelphia is two games ahead of Washington (who won last night in tough Arizona)and three games in front of the Mets. Building a lead over the Nationals is key, as they still loom as the team to beat in the division.

- Everyone is a different hero now, with Santana and Franco hot. But the player most sizzling continues to be Herrera, who leads the league in hitting. Odubel is playing like an All-Star, with only occasional lapses in the field and on the base paths. He seems to have matured- on and off the field- and is turning into a superstar.

- It seems reliever Pat Neshek, a real veteran, had a heart-to-heart two-hour talk with then struggling new manager Gabe Kapler back in early April. Since then he hasn't killed the bullpen, a she did in the first five games of the year, and hasn't made strange double-moves or all-too-apparent bad pitching changes ( like taking Aaron Nola, now 5-1) out of the first game of the season against Atlanta when Nola was leading  5-1 in the 6th inning). Whether it was Neshek's chat, so Kapler wouldn't lose the clubhouse, or the booing from the home fans, or criticism by the media, something got to Kapler to settle him down.

- The Giants came into Citizens bank Park as a hot team, coming off a weekend sweep of the braves. They limped out of Philly four games to the worst, in third place in NL West. With Cueto and Baumgartener still out, lack of solid pitching is killing the Giants.

- The Mets are struggling big-time after an 11-1 start, but the Phils can never take New York lightly. For several years now, the Mets have had the Pihllies' number, especially at CBP, where New York scores ton a of runs. This weekend, the Phillies throw Arrieta and Nola at New York, but the Mets counter with Syndergard and deGrome.

- Per my question to Extra Innings, the writers feel the following two names in next month's June MLB Draft should be kept an eye on when the Phillies pick 3rd. Nick Madrigal is an infielder out of Oregon State. He is on the smallish side ( 5'8) but can hit and has the passion and desire to make it. Alec Bohm is a power-hitting third baseman from Wichita St.

- After the weekend series with New York, the team hits the road with two games with the lowly Orioles and then four games  in St. Louis vs. the Cardinals. Looking forward to seeing OF Tommy Pham, who is battling for supremacy in NL East  with Herrera. The next home stand features a return of the Braves and the Blue Jays.

- If confidence is part of Sixers' Markelle Fultz' problems, maybe he should talk to Eagles' wide receiver Nelson Agholor, who was once deemed a head-case who dropped too many passes, to a big reason why the Birds won the Super Bowl.

-Sounds like, from Brett brown's exit interview with the media this morning, he wants a significant free agent signed this summer. Even GM Colangelo admit the 76ers "need something' to get them over the hump. We will see if that means LeBron James or not.

- I got my Eagles tickets for the fall. The opener- Atlanta ( with the raising of the championship banner) sold-out quickly. Minnesota in October- a rematch of the NFC Championship game- and Dallas on Sunday Night Football in November, should both be good games. The Vikings will be dangerous challengers with the Birds in the NFC, with new QB Kirk Cousins and their stout defense.  Dallas is Dallas, and for the first time in a while, this game at the Linc should mean something.

I'm happy to get tickets, as many fans were shut-out on-line. Seems the growing trend is, in a matter of seconds, tickets go form being available to the general public to the secondary market, like StubHub, where they are often sold for double or even triple face-value. I'm sure tickets to see the Sixers next season will be crazy to find, tickets that are affordable, that is.

PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- SIXERS, PHILLIES

- I'm proud of the Sixers. They fought hard and didn't give up. It was a hell of a year, only two years removed from 10 wins. Still it was frustrating and disappointing, knowing the Sixers were favored in the series, with Boston without two of its regulars. It could've been so much more.

- Markelle Fultz was the overall No. 1 pick of the draft yet didn't play at all in the Boston series. After seeing Jayson Tatum excel in the series, knowing they passed up on Tatum ( a decision that will likely haunt the organization for years), it was even more painful not to see Fultz. His situation needs to be made clear by the start of next season. You can;t have the No. 1 pick sit on the bench without even sniffing a minute of playing time in a huge playoff series.

- Could Kobe Bryant help to remake Ben Simmons' jumper? Kobe or no, Simmons needs to work on his outside game this summer. The Celtics' plan for Simmons was simple: clog up the middle so Ben can't drive and glide to the basket. Force him to shoot from the outside. Simmons knows, at this point in his young career, he can't shot a lick, even from 15-feet in. His foul shooting remains an issue, and at times he doesn't want contact for fear of going to the foul-line. Simmons may be Rookie of the Year but his overall game needs to improve big-time.

- Same with Joel Embiid. Great player but he takes way too many 3-point shots. As Shaq O'Neil said on the post-game show, Embiid should never settle for a long jump shot if he is being guarded by a shorter opponent. Take the ball to the basket, draw fouls and punish guys in the box, not 25-feet away from the basket.

- I bet the organization keeps Coach Brett Brown, but his blew several games in the Boston series by stupid decision-making. The players have to perform, but not calling time-out in Game Two as Boston made it's comeback run was ridiculous.

- Who goes and who stays? Do Bellinelli and Illysova leave because they don't play defense? Does Paul George or LeBron James come to Philly to get the 76ers over the hump? What happens in the draft?

- The Phillies destroyed San Francisco again last night, 11-3. Franco and Santana continue to surge. The offense clicked even with both Hoskins and Kingery having the night off. The team is now 21-15, still 1/2 game behind the first place Braves in NL East.

- With a win this afternoon ( another stupid Facebook-only deal) against the Giants, the Phils will have swept another four-game series at home. They beat Pittsburgh earlier, taking all four games. The club is 14-4 at Citizens Bank Park so far, and have a 14-2 record against  opponents not in National League East.

- Nick Pivetta pitched five scoreless innings to get the win last night. The starting pitching has been great, with Arrieta and Nola doing thier ace-like magic, and Eflin a pleasant surprise.Vince Valasquez  takes the mound today vs. SF. Valasquez has been inconsistent, like usual. His ultimate fate may be in the bullpen as a future closer, but for now, he is in the rotation. Jared Eichoff and Mark Leiter Jr. loom soon form injury. Valasquez needs to pitch well to secure his spot in the starting rotation.
