* Reports are that Giancarlo Stanton has agreed to a trade which will send him form Miami to the Yankees. The rich get richer.. A line-up with both Stanton and Aaron Judge (the two players who battled for the Home Run derby last All-Star break) is a modern-day Murderer's Row.
Last July, when rumors had the Phillies interested in Stanton, I wrote what he could do in cozy Citizen's Bank park. Angelo Cataldi told me that I was "dreaming' that the Marlins would trade Stanton to anyone, but I guess this new ownership group, led by Derek Jeter, is intent on cutting salary. They traded Dee Gordon to Seattle earlier in the week.
Don't know the details of the trade just yet, but I'm sure the Marlins will be getting back a boatload of prospects. The Yanks get a guy who hit 59 home runs last year, who is still in his prime, but who needs to get paid for another 10 years.
The American League east will be a battle in 2018 between New York and Boston. The Red Sox need power, so it will be interesting to see how they counter-react to the Stanton deal.
Meanwhile, Japanese star Ohtani is going to the Anaheim Angels to team with Mike Trout. We knew Ohtani wanted to play on the west coast. He instantly makes Anaheim a contender in the AL West. It will be interesting to see how the Angels use him, as both a pitcher and hitter. He could be baseball's first real two-way player.
The Phillies are still sitting on the sidelines as the Winter Meetings begin. They never really had a shot at Ohtani. They didn't have the international money plus he didn't want to play east.
As far as Stanton is concerned, they do have the money to make that happen. What would they have to give the Marlins in return? Would John Middleton and Phillies management be willing to pay Stanton for the next decade?
It's all a mute point now, all a dream of what his home run total may have been as a Phillie in CBP.
Stanton and the Yankees come to Philadelphia this summer, in a three-game series in late June.
* The Sixers play at Cleveland tonight. Joel Embiid will be sitting it out, since tonight is the first of back-to-back games. Without Embiid, the 76'ers don't stand much of a chance on the road against LeBron James and the Cavaliers.
Reportedly, Embiid will start playing in back-to-back games in January. Only then can the Sixers be considered a serious contender.
* The Eagles are one day away from finally facing the LA Rams. These Eagle games this season, so spread out in days and times, seem forever in-between games. I'm sure the team will be glad to come home, but need to take care of business first.
I like the Birds to go to 11-2 tomorrow, bearing Los Angeles 34-13.
