PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- PHILLIES, SIXERS, FLYERS, EAGLES

* Reports are that the Phillies are close to signing reliever Tommy Hunter. Hunter is a righty who pitched for Tampa Bay last season. ESPN earlier reported the Phils were close to signing reliever Addison Reed, which turned out to be an error.

With the signing of Pat Neshek, it seems the club's first priority this off-season is to build up the bullpen. The Winter Meetings are only halfway over, and the Pihllies still need to get starting pitching to team with Aaron Nola. It will be interesting to see what they do with players like Galvis, Hernandez and Joseph, guys who ar eon the trade block.

Also in baseball, Japanese star Otani, who recently signing with the Angels, has a ligament problem with his right elbow and may need Tommy John surgery, which would keep him out of playing for at least a year.

Still not sure how Anaheim was planning on using Otani, as a power pitcher or power hitter ( he does both).Either way, the elbow will keep him out of commission for a while.

* The Sixers snapped their four-game losing streak last night, beating Minnesota on the road. Joel Embiid logged a career-high 39 minutes. Beating the Timberwolves in overtime was a feat and hopefully the 76'ers build on this win, as they play the Thunder in Philly on Friday night.

* The Flyers won their fourth game in a row, beating the Maple Leafs 4-2. What a streaky team- losing 10 then winning four. They have four more games at home during this homestand. They are getting great goaltending form Brian Elliot. As we have said, the Orange and Black aren't going far without a No. 1 goalie, or a goalie who is playing like a No. 1 guy.

It stills tings, the Wentz injury, as he prepares for surgery to fix his torn ACL. But now reality is sinking in. Before, it was like Wentz was Superman. Hard to believe he got hurt, let alone is out for the year. After going to 11-2, having home field advantage, winning a tough game against the explosive Rams, and having a clear path to the Super Bowl, it sucks that things are cloudy now.

Wentz is young, fit and determined. He will be back, stronger than ever, hungrier than ever. For now, the team must rely on QB Nick Foles, and keep him healthy.

Getting home field advantage and winning two home playoff games isn't impossible. Winning the Super Bowl, playing on a neutral field, against  a Tom Brady or Ben Rothensberger, will be a challenge. Getting to the big game on February 4th, and having a shot at a championship, is all we can ask.

CB Sidney Jones, who was drafted in the second round last spring, and who hasn't played, rehabbing from a torn Achilles injury, will practice with the team today. If he is healthy, the Eagles should work him into the rotation. The organization needs to look long-term, but why not play Jones, if he is ready to play?
