PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- EAGLES, PHILLIES

* The Eagles' Carson Wentz had surgery to repair his torn ACL in his left knee yesterday. The surgery reportedly went well, but when doesn't it?

The real issue was, why did Wentz have the surgery in Pittsburgh? The Steelers team doctor, of all people, performed the operation.

Awkward...especially when the Eagles train and practice at the Nova Care Center, and are sponsored by Philadelphia hospitals, Jefferson being one.

Apparently, Wentz' agent is also the agent for Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlesberger. Whether there is a connection  there or not, I don't know.

I guess it's no big deal. The bottom line is that Wentz can now rehab, get strong again and hopefully come back in 2018. It was just odd.

* Tight end Zach Ertz cleared concussion protocol and will play against the Giants on Sunday. Ertz was having a break-out year, Wentz' favorite target. He can be the same for QB Nick Foles, that safety valve over the middle or a big red zone target. Trey Burton did a good job filling in for Ertz. But Ertz is having a Pro Bowl-type season, so he will be welcomed back this weekend and for the upcoming playoffs.

*The Phillies left the Winter Meetings in Florida today with two relief pitchers- Pat Neshek and Tommy hunter. They still have more work to do, namely giving Aaron Nola some help in the rotation and sorting out the crowded mess in the infield. Who is going to play next spring? Joseph or Hoskins at first? Hernandez or Kingery at second? Galvis or Crawford at short? And what happens to disappointing Franco?

I don't blame the Phils for not trading for Orioles third baseman Manny Machado. As much as I would love to have Machado, why give up young pitching ( what Baltimore wants in return) when the club can try and get him in free agency after this season?

Machado would fit in nicely for Franco, or can play shortstop if need be. The ideal plan is to give Franco one final chance this summer, then signing Machado next winter.

I wouldn't give up young pitching, even though Machado is  a proven stud Especially the power arms at lower-level A ball, namely Sixto Sanchez

The Phillies lost promising 22-year-old outfielder Carlos Tocci in the Rule 5 Draft today. He was selected No. 4 by the White Sox, who then traded him to Texas. He must stay on the Rangers' 25-man roster all year or be offered back to the Phils.  Tocci hit over .300 in Reading last summer.
