This topic came up on the Steve Trevelise show last night on WIP Sports radio. Do you say Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays?
Things are so politically correct these days. We live in a different world. As a kid, it was only natural to spread joy around the holidays by saying "Merry Christmas".
I'm a Merry Christmas guy, unless of course, I know someone doesn't prefer that greeting because of religious reasons. Saying "Merry Christmas" simply is a way of spreading cheer and goodwill, as well as reminding everyone of the real "reason for the season."
Why do we say "Good Morning"? As a pleasant gesture to each other. Isn't it the same with Merry Christmas, Happy New Year or any other greeting?
I remember one time at work I was in an elevator around the holidays with a co-worker. I knew her for years and she always seemed like a sweet lady.
I simply wished her a Merry Christmas as we rode the elevator. To my surprise, she actually got a bit pissed off, saying "I don't celebrate Christmas". it was because of religious reasons ( Jehovah's Witnesses don't celebrate much).
I was cool with the reason but stunned by her reaction. I felt awkward, and found myself apologizing for being a nice guy and wishing her a Merry Christmas. Didn't make sense.
To each his/her own. I hear "Happy Holidays" more and more every year, and that covers all bases and all special occasions around the end of the year. I guess if your'e not sure, and want to play it safe, and don't want to offend anyone, you either say "Happy Holidays" or nothing at all.
But to me, I'll always say "Merry Christmas". Like I said before, it's the reason for the season, and I'm glad we may be turning back around and using the greeting of "Merry Christmas" more.
Even as a person with a disability, I find folks much too sensitive these days. Sometimes I wish the world was simpler again, like when I was growing up, when "Merry Christmas" meant joy and happiness and wasn't such a big deal to debate.
