PHILLY SPORTS CORNER- FLYERS, SIXERS, EAGLES

A busy day and weekend in Philly sports awaits. ..

*The Flyers are at home this afternoon, hoping to break a 9-game losing streak. They have had all week  to think about their slide. I think they take out their frustrations today on the Boston Bruins. The Orange and Black have to win sometime, don't they?

* The Sixers play the nightcap at the Wells Fargo center against the improved Detroit Pistons. Joel Embiid should play. The 76'ers have been beating everyone not named the Warriors, Cavaliers and Celtics.

When was the last time the Sixers went into December 12-9? They are proving to be building toward a playoff berth down the road. If Embiid begins to play back-to-back games, starting in January, as expected, this team should get better and better. The team learns how to put other clubs away at the end, as they have played well against Golden State, Cleveland and Boston, but just can't seem to seal the deal at the end.

* The Eagles fly west today, gone for a few weeks on the west coast, playing tough Seattle tomorrow night and then the LA Rams next week. The Birds are 10-1, the best record in the NFL. They play a desperate Seahawk team that has lost its last two home games. They play before a national audience again. And they play to clinch the NFC East, the first goal to the playoffs.

Clinching a playoff bye and earning home field advantage thru-out the post-season are the goals now. Let the road to the Super Bowl run through Philadelphia.

It won't be easy. I expect Seattle to play tough. I expect the Rams to give the Birds a great game next Sunday. Despite it being a division game, the Giants in New York shouldn't be a problem. Then two holiday home games- on Christmas night vs Oakland and a New Year's Eve match-up with Dallas- should be wins, unless the Eagles rest some starters.

Are the Eagles a great team? So far, yes. They have a chance to be the greatest Eagle team in franchise history. Time will tell. You can't call this Eagles team "great" yet until they prove themselves when it really counts- in the playoffs.

This has been a fun year because it has been so unexpected. In 2004, the Birds were expected to win. This season, they were picked to finish last in their own division by many so-called football experts. That's why it would be so disappointing now if the Birds don't make it to the Super Bowl and win it. I think this team will be good for years to come, led by Carson Wentz. But as the Cowboys went 13-3 last year, and are now 6-6 and on life-support for a playoff bid, you have to take advantage of what's happening now.

Everything has seemed to have gone the Eagles' way in 2017. Even the schedule, injuries and suspensions have seemed to be on Philly's side. They are a team of destiny

Seize the moment. Why not go 15-1 and ride into the playoffs, dominating all?

Losing in Seattle wouldn't be crushing. The Eagles will still win the division and most likely get a bye and home field. Would losing a game before the playoffs bring the birds back to reality and make them even hungrier for a championship? Maybe. But I'll take 14-2, gain some playoff-type atmosphere before the playoffs, as long as Philadelphia is in the Super Bowl on February 4- and wins its first championship in 57 years.
