Today is 37 years since Beatle John Lennon was killed outside his apartment in New York City. he was only 40 years old
Hard to believe it's been 37 years.I remember hearing the news several ways. Back in 1980 I had a CB Radio and I was on the airwaves that night when a friend told me that John had been shot, but not killed. At the same time I had Monday Night Football on. I turned the sound up and heard a somber Howard Cosell inform America that John had been shot.
Later I would find out the details, how the maniac that shot him had stalked John, how the song "All My Loving" was playing in the hospital as John was wheeled into the emergency room.
I remember John for his empathy for the less fortunate and for his fierce voice singing rock n' roll music. I was pretty much a lifelong Beatle fan, but the movie "A hard day's Night" really gave john and all the Beatles personalities. They were larger than life. John added many clever ad libs to the movie, which stuck.
As with the Beatles themselves, John was like a brilliant light streaking across the night sky, gone way too soon but never forgotten.
We could imagine (pardon the pun) that if John had lived, there would've been much more music. He would've been active on social media, maybe had his own talk show or even run for politics.
Instead, I want to remember John as he was- fun, wild, an activist and a great musician. I feel lucky he was around for the time he was, thankful I was alive when John Lennon was alive too.
