Band of Bros. & Yogi
"Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle hardened. He will fight savagely...The free-men of the world are marching together in victory. I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty, and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full victory. Good luck, and let us all beseech the blessings of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking."
- General Dwight D. Eisehower.
"We had orders not to go on the beach. They went on their own, and they got it. We had to stay back and protect them. There were a lot of horrors."
- Yogi Berra
On June 6, 1944, General Eisnhower gave the orders and the brave men of the allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy. One of those young men involved was a Seaman 2nd class from St. Louis, Yogi Berra. Berra had put his baseball career on hold a year earlier to join the Navy. He trained as a gunner's mate and at age 19 worked on a rocket launching boat firing at German defenses on Omaha beach during the Normandy Invasion.
