- The Eagles signed QB Carson Wentz to a four-year extension yesterday. $107 million of the $127 million extension is guaranteed.
I''m OK with locking Wentz up. He is the Eagles' future. I get it that the Birds didn't have to sign Wentz now. We don't know if he will stay healthy all season. It is rare for a quarterback in the NFL to go through an entire season without missing a game. But giving Wentz the extension now leaves no doubt he is the man. Wentz can concentrate on football and focus on taking the Eagles to another super bowl.
- Phillies Manager Gabe Kapler had an intense interview in WIP sports radio this morning with Angelo Cataldi. It was terrific radio, as Kapler and Cataldi went back and forth on various topics, including how the skipper handled the Jean Segura not hustling event, Jake Arrieta's poor performances, and taking Nick Pivetta out of the game prematurely in Los Angeles.
The bottom line is Kapler is an idiot. He is not honest with the fans, who know what a jerk he is. He was told by Phillies management to be more forthcoming with the media and the fans. I don't trust him and he will never change in his analytical way of thinking.
The team needs a manger who is a baseball man and a disciplinarian, a guy like Larry Bowa. Kapler will never win a championship. After spending so much money on free agents the Phillies and their fans deserve a real manager.
- Toronto is up two games to one over Golden State in the NBA Finals. The Warriors, despite playing at home, were without starts Kevin Durant and Clay Thompson in Game 3. I still expect Golden State to win the series in six, but it won't be easy now, and the series may extend to the deciding seventh game back in Canada.
- The Blues tied up the Stanley Cup Finals last night with a victory over the Bruins in Boston. Boston cannot win another championship. The Bruin fans are crying over a on-call by the refs which resulted in the game-winning goal by St. Louis.
- Looking at the baseball pennant races, The Phillies are 2 games up on Atlanta in NL East. The Mets are 5 back, while the Nationals are 7 out.Washington, once 10 out last week, has too much talent to get blown out of the race. I still look for a tight scramble into September.
Same with NL Central. Technically, the Cubs and Brewers are tied for the division lead. St. Louis, always hovering, is only 2 1/2 games behind, while the Pirates and Reds bring up the rear, 4 and 6 games in back, respectively.
The Dodgers are running away with NL West, having a double digit lead over their closest rival, Colorado.
- The Yankees continue to lead AL East, with Tampa bay still on their backs, a mere 1 1/2 games behind. The Red Sox can't seem to make up ground and stay 6 1/2 games behind new York.
The surprising Twins are blowing away the AL Central, with the Indians the only other club with a .500 mark in the division.
In Al West, Houston has taken control, with the Angels, Mariners, Rangers and A's all jockeying for a distant second place.
