* Will the Eagles regret trading offensive linemen Tobin and Barbre? They dealt away depth for marginal draft picks. Meanwhile, the O-line has struggled early. Why not try Wiesneski and Womack at center and guard. respectively? What do you have to lose? The center of the line now is small. They are getting manhandled in both run blocking and pass protection. Don't allow this promising season to be spoiled because of the line.
Plus your'e gonna get Carson Wentz killed if you don't develop a running game. Throwing the ball 40 times every game is ridiculous. Wentz is the future and the franchise. Protect him,d on't allow him to get pummeled each week.
* The Phillies beat the Dodgers again last night. This late-season surge gives fans hope and a taste of what can be. Mike Schmidt gave an interview yesterday and thinks the team can contend for the playoffs in 2018 if they improve their pitching.
Why not? The front office thought negative earlier in the season, afraid the young kids would fail if they were promoted Guess what? The kids- Hoskins, Williams, Crawford- are thriving and making Phillies baseball fun and relevant again. Why not think positive out of spring training and demand excellency instead of mediocrity.
No more "We are striving to be .500" Think positive and good things will happen.
* Let's not let GM Matt ( Clueless) Klentak off the hook. It will be interesting to see what happens on October 2- the day after the season ends. Will Manager Pete Mackanin be fired? Will team President Andy MacFailure finally rise from his crypt and speak to the fans/ Will owner John Middleton emerge from his bunker of shame to give the fans hope?
Klentak and the organization will reap the fruits of Hoskins, both on the field and off. Let's not forget that the only reason Hoskins and Williams were promoted to Philly was because of injuries, not great player evaluation.
Needless to say, these kids should've been in Philadelphia from the start, instead of failures like Michael Saunders and oft-injured Howie Kendrick. The organization will do the same thing next spring with Scott Kingery, who won't be called up until after May 1 due to service time red tape.
The Phillies always brag about spending money to make the team better. OK, then pay Kingery when the time comes if he deserves it.
Klentak won't be going anywhere. But hopefully the front office will listen to the fans more often in the future. Sometimes the fans do know what they are watching and what is best for the Phillies down the road.
* Flyers' captain Claude Giroux is taking shifts playing wing in training camp. Good idea. Be as flexible as can be. It looks like the Flyers will have quite a few young guys on the squad this season. Hopefully they give the vets a burst of energy like the Phillies' young players did this summer.
* Nice that Chase Utley again got a standing ovation before his first at-bat last night. Did anyone notice how gray he has gotten? Hopefully Utley gets another shot at a World Series this year, although the Cubs, Nationals and even the resurgent Diamondbacks will be a handful in the playoffs.
