IN MY LIFE- BASEBALL RECORDS

Baseball, unlike any other sports, is known for it's records. Something to debate about. Hitting streaks, no-hitters, winning and losing streaks, you name it. It's a part of what makes Baseball so great, compared to other sports.

The Phillies' Rhys Hoskins, had a chance to hit for the cycle last Saturday night in Miami. He fell a triple short ( which is often the case), but that got me to thinking about baseball records. So I did a little research.

Everyone knows about Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak; Nolan Ryan's 7 no-hitters; Pete Rose having more hits then anyone in the history of baseball, etc...I found a few rare and interesting baseball records I wanted to share:

HITTING FOR THE CYCLE-

* The last Philadelphia Phillie to hit for the cycle ( single, double, triple and home run) was David Bell in 2004. Before that, Gregg Jefferies did it in 1995, and Johnny Callison accomplished the rare feat in 1963.

* The Florida/Miami Marlins are the only franchise never to have a player hit for the cycle. I would think Giancarlos Stanton would do it someday. He has enough speed to hit a triple.

* Hard to believe but the following baseball legends never hit for the cycle even once in their career: Roberto Clemente, Mike Schmidt, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Ernie Banks, Mark McGuire, Derek Jeter.

* Mike Trout has done it once, back in 2013. Phoenixville's own Andre Thonrton did it on 4/ 22/ 78. Joe DiMaggio did it twice, in 1937 and 1948. Arizona Diamondback Aaron Hill did it twice in 11 days in 2012. Michael Cuddyer hit for the cycle with two different teams ( Minnesota in 2009 and Colorado in 2014).

IMMACULATE INNING-

An immaculate inning is when a pitcher strikes out  the side with only nine pitches.

*  The Phillies have had this rare pitching feat done twice in recent years- Someone named Juan Perez did it on 7/8/11 against the Braves in the 10th inning, while Cole Hamels did it on 5/17/14 in the 4th inning vs. Cincinnati.

* Only 79 pitchers in major league history have accomplished Immaculate Innings in their career. An amazing five hurlers have done it so far in 2017. Three pitchers in history have done it twice ( Lefty Grove, Randy Johnson and Nolan Ryan).

* Only one pitcher in major league history has thrown an Immaculate Inning three times- the great Sandy Koufax  did it in 1962, 63 and 64.

TWO HOMERS IN AN INNING-

Only two Phillies have hit two home runs in a single inning- Von Hayes in the 1st inning on 6/11/85 and Andy Seminck in the 8th inning on 6/2/49.

SIX HITS IN A GAME-

* The only Phillie ever to have six hits in a 9-inning game was Connie Ryan in 1953. The only player in major league history to ever have seven hits in  9-inning game was Rennie Stennett of the Pirates on 9/16/75/ Stennett went 7 for 7 that day against the Cubs.

HOME RUNS IN 40 OR MORE MAJOR LEAGUE PARKS-

The list of players who ht a homer in at least 40 ballparks in their career:

Sammy Sosa- 45
Ken Griffey Jr.- 44
Fred McGriff- 43
Ellis Burks- 41
Mike Piazza- 40
Gary Sheffield- 40

10 FEATS MORE RARE THAN A NO-HITTER-

1. 20 Strike-out games ( Roger Clemens did it twice).
2. Unassisted Triple Play ( Phillie Eric Bruntlett was the last to do it on 8/23/09).
3. Triple Crown
4. Hitting for the Cycle.
5. Stealing Second, Third and Home ine One Appearance
6. 4 Home-Run Game (Last accomplished by Josh Hamilton in 2012)
7. Shortstop Doesn't Touch Ball
8. Immaculate Inning
9. 40/40 Season ( 40 homers and 40 stolen bases in the same season)
.10. Batting .400 ( Tony Gwynn hit .394 in a strike-shortened season in 1994).

SHORTSTOP DOESN'T TOUCH THE BALL-

This extremely obscure feat has only happened once in major league history. On June 26, 1976 Texas Rangers' shortstop Toby Harrah became the only player ever in major league history to play a doubleheader and never touch the baseball.
